In this study, the correlation between the impregnation of proton exchange membrane fuel cell catalysts with perfluorosulfonate-ionomer (PFSI) and its electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties is investigated for different Pt loadings and carbon supports using a rotating-disk electrode (RDE) setup. We concentrate on its influence on the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. For this purpose, platinum (Pt) nanoparticles are prepared via a colloidal based preparation route and supported on three different carbon supports. Based on RDE experiments, we show that the ionomer has an influence both on the Pt utilization and the apparent kinetic current density of ORR. The experimental data reveal a strong interaction in the microstructure between the electrochemical properties and the surface properties of the carbon supports, metal loading and ionomer content. This study demonstrates that the colloidal synthesis approach offers interesting potential for systematic studies for the optimization of fuel cell catalysts.

Sewage sludge gasification assays were performed in an atmospheric fluidised bed reactor using air and air–steam mixtures as the gasifying agents. Dolomite, olivine and alumina are three well known tar removal catalysts used in biomass gasification processing. However, little information is available regarding their performance in sewage sludge gasification. The aim of the current study was to learn about the influence of these three catalysts in the product distribution and tar production during sewage sludge gasification. To this end, a set of assays was performed in which the temperature (750–850 °C), the in-bed catalyst content (0, 10 and 15 wt.%) and the steam–biomass ratio (SB) in the range of 0–1 were varied with a constant equivalence ratio (ER) of 0.3. The results were compared to the results from gasification without a catalyst. We show that dolomite has the highest activity in tar elimination, followed by alumina and olivine. In addition to improving tar removal, the presence of water vapour and the catalysts increased the content of H2 in the gases by nearly 60%.

The use of Ga-Au alloys as metal catalysts for the growth of SiGe nanowires has been investigated. The grown nanowires are cylindrical and straight, with a defect-free crystalline structure, sharp nanowire-droplet interfaces and an almost constant Ge atomic fraction throughout all their length. These features represent significant improvements over the results obtained using pure Au

Reactive immunization has emerged as a new tool for the study of biological catalysis. A powerful application resulted in catalytic antibodies that use an enamine mechanism akin to that used by the class I aldolases. With regard to the evolution of enzyme mechanisms, we investigated the utility of an enamine pathway for the allylic rearrangement exemplified by Δ5-3-ketosteroid isomerase (KSI; EC 5.3.3.1). Our aldolase antibodies were found to catalyze the isomerization of both steroid model compounds and steroids. The kinetic and chemical studies showed that the antibodies afforded rate accelerations up to a factor of 104 by means of an enamine mechanism in which imine formation was the rate-determining step. In light of our observations and the enzyme studies by other workers, we suggest that an enamine pathway could have been an early, viable KSI mechanism. Although this pathway is amenable to optimization for increased catalytic power, it appears that certain factors precluded its evolution in known KSI enzymes.

A family of RNA m5C methyl transferases (MTases) containing over 55 members in eight subfamilies has been identified recently by an iterative search of the genomic sequence databases by using the known 16S rRNA m5C 967 MTase, Fmu, as an initial probe. The RNA m5C MTase family contained sequence motifs that were highly homologous to motifs in the DNA m5C MTases, including the ProCys sequence that contains the essential Cys catalyst of the functionally similar DNA-modifying enzymes; it was reasonable to assign the Cys nucleophile to be that in the conserved ProCys. The family also contained an additional conserved Cys residue that aligns with the nucleophilic catalyst in m5U54 tRNA MTase. Surprisingly, the mutant of the putative Cys catalyst in the ProCys sequence was active and formed a covalent complex with 5-fluorocytosine-containing RNA, whereas the mutant at the other conserved Cys was inactive and unable to form the complex. Thus, notwithstanding the highly homologous sequences and similar functions, the RNA m5C MTase uses a different Cys as a catalytic nucleophile than the DNA m5C MTases. The catalytic Cys seems to be determined, not by the target base that is modified, but by whether the substrate is DNA or RNA. The function of the conserved ProCys sequence in the RNA m5C MTases remains unknown.

We report development of a polymer gel with a catalytic activity that can be switched on and off when the solvent composition is changed. The gel consists of two species of monomers. The major component, N-isopropylacrylamide, makes the gel swell and shrink in response to a change in composition of ethanol/water mixtures. The minor component, vinylimidazole, which is capable of catalysis, is copolymerized into the gel network. The reaction rate for catalytic hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl caprylate was small when the gel was swollen. In contrast, when the gel was shrunken, the reaction rate increased 5 times. The activity changes discontinuously as a function of solvent composition, thus the catalysis can be switched on and off by an infinitesimal change in solvent composition. The kinetics of catalysis by the gel in the shrunken state is well described by the Michaelis–Menten formula, indicating that the absorption of the substrate by the hydrophobic environment created by the N-isopropylacrylamide polymer in the shrunken gel is responsible for enhancement of catalytic activity. In the swollen state, the rate vs. active site concentration is linear, indicating that the substrate absorption is not a primary factor determining the kinetics. Catalytic activity of the gel is studied for substrates with various alkyl chain lengths; of those studied the switching effect is most pronounced for p-nitrophenyl caprylate.

This PhD work deals with problems of synthetic organic chemistry with particular attention to the development of environmentally friendly processes. In particular, new synthetic strategies have been studied based on the use of low cost heterogeneous catalysts, non-toxic reagents and mild operating conditions that do not involve, when possible, the use of solvents. The catalysts examined are both basic and acids, commercial or prepared by hetereogenization of homogeneous catalysts synthesized by tethering or impregnation. In particular it will be discussed the catalytic activity of oxides (Al2O3 and TiO2), supported sulphonic acids and hydrotalcites for the reactions of selective monoesterificazion of dicarboxylic acids, dehydrogenation of butane in gas phase, esterification of levulinic acid, Friedel-Craft acylations, C-C and C-P coupling. The use of these materials has allowed the development of simple processes with low environmental impact. The operating conditions are in fact mild and reaction times short. The selectivity for the desired products is in all reported cases very high and the catalysts can be recycled maintaining their optimum performances.

The synthesis of a GSK 2nd generation inhibitor of the hepatitis C virus, by enantioselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between a leucine derived iminoester and tert-butyl acrylate, was studied. The comparison between silver(I) and gold(I) catalysts in this reaction was established by working with chiral phosphoramidites or with chiral BINAP. The best reaction conditions were used for the total synthesis of the hepatitis C virus inhibitor by a four step procedure affording this product in 99% ee and in 63% overall yield. The origin of the enantioselectivity of the chiral gold(I) catalyst was justified according to DFT calculations, the stabilizing coulombic interaction between the nitrogen atom of the thiazole moiety and one of the gold atoms being crucial.

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between azomethine ylides and alkenes is efficiently catalysed by [{(Sa)-Binap-Au(tfa)}2] (Binap=2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1′-binaphthyl; tfa=trifluoroacetyl). Maleimides, 1,2-bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethylene, chalcone and nitrostyrene were suitable dipolarophiles even when using sterically hindered 1,3-dipole precursors. The results obtained in these transformations improve the analogous ones obtained in the same reactions catalysed by [Binap–Ag(tfa)]. In addition, computational studies have also been carried out to demonstrate both the high enantioselectivity exhibited by the chiral gold(I) complex, and the non-linear effect observed in this transformation.

Binap-AgSbF6 catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions between azomethine ylides and electrophilic alkenes are described and compared with analogous transformations mediated by other Binap-silver(I) salt complexes. Maleimides and 1,2-bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethylene are suitable dipolarophiles for obtaining very good enantioselectivities, even better values are generated by a multicomponent version. There are some very interesting applications of the disulfonylated cycloadducts in the total synthesis of cis-2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidines, precursors of natural products, or valuable intermediates in the synthesis of antiviral compounds.

Chiral complexes formed by phosphoramidites such as (Sa,R,R)-9 and Cu(OTf)2 are excellent catalysts for the general 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between azomethine ylides and nitroalkenes affording the corresponding tetrasubstituted proline esters mainly as exo-cycloadducts in high er at room temperature. The exo-cycloadducts can be obtained in enantiomerically pure form just after simple recrystallization. DFT calculations support the stereochemical results.

A Rh phosphine complex, derived from the Wilkinson’s catalyst, has been immobilized by ion-exchange on the ammonium form of a Al-MCM-41 sample. Ammonium ions have been exchanged by cholamine ions, which act as an amine ligand, and then the Wilkinson’s catalyst has been immobilized by substitution of a phosphine ligand by the anchored amine. This is a novel immobilization procedure, as a ligand, instead of the whole complex, is tethered to the support by ion exchange. The obtained hybrid catalyst has been characterized by Elemental Analysis, DRIFTS and XPS. The quantitative exchange of ammonium by cholamine and coordination of Rh to amines has been observed. Most of the anchored Rh is considered to be coordinated to the ligand tethered to the support and a small proportion seems to be interacting with the protonated ligand or with the support surface. The catalyst has been tested in the hydrogenation of cyclohexene and in the hydroformylation of 1-octene. In the first case the catalyst is active and reusable, while a strong Rh leaching takes place in the second one.

In this article, the past and the state-of-the-art in Three-Way Catalyst (TWC) technology are reviewed. The main chemical reactions occurring in a gasoline engine are discussed and also the main reactions taking place in a TWC placed in the tailpipe, namely CO and hydrocarbons oxidation and nitrogen oxides reduction to molecular nitrogen. The main components of a TWC (substrates, noble metals and cerium oxides) and their role in the different chemical reactions occurring in a TWC are described. Finally, the problem of diesel vehicles gas aftertratment is described, and the current state-of-the art in catalytic converters for these vehicles are commented.

CuO/ceria-zirconia catalysts have been prepared, deeply characterised (N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms at −196 °C, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, TEM and H2-TPR) and tested for NO oxidation to NO2 in TPR conditions, and for soot combustion at mild temperature (400 °C) in a NOx/O2 stream. The behaviour has been compared to that of a reference Pt/alumina commercial catalyst. The ceria-zirconia support was prepared by the co-precipitation method, and different amounts of copper (0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6 wt%) were loaded by incipient wetness impregnation. The results revealed that copper is well-dispersed onto the ceria-zirconia support for the catalysts with low copper loading and CuO particles were only identified by XRD in samples with 4 and 6% of copper. A very low loading of copper increases significantly the activity for the NO oxidation to NO2 with regard to the ceria-zirconia support and an optimum was found for a 4% CuO/ceria-zirconia composition, showing a very high activity (54% at 348 °C). The soot combustion rate at 400 °C obtained with the 2% CuO/ceria-zirconia catalyst is slightly lower to that of 1% Pt/alumina in terms of mass of catalyst but higher in terms of price of catalyst.
