DSDP cores from areas of low (Site 505) and high heat flow (Site 504 B) near the Costa Rica Rift, together with seismic profiles from the Panama Basin, have been studied to determine the relationship between: (1) carbonate content and physical and acoustic properties; and (2) carbonate content, carbonate diagenesis and acoustic stratigraphy. Except for ash and chert layers, bulk density correlates strongly and linearly with carbonate content. Velocity is uniform downcore and only small variations at a small scale are measured. Thus an abrupt change in carbonate content will cause abrupt changes in acoustic impedance and should cause reflectors that can be detected acoustically. A comparison of seismic profiler reflection records with physical properties, carbonate content and reflection coefficients indicates that the main reflectors can be identified with ash layers, diagenetic boundaries, and carbonate content variations. Diagenesis of carbonate sediments is present at Site 504B in a 260 m-thick ooze-chalk-limestone/chert sequence. These diagenetic sequences occur in areas of higher heat flow (200 mW/m**2). Seismic profiler records can be used to map the extent and depth of these diagenetic boundaries.

The influence of biogenic opal sediment input (mainly diatom skeletons) on the fluorine budget of marine sediments will be shown for 24 sampling stations of the antarctic regions of Bransfield Strait, Powell Basin, South Orkney Plateau and northwestern Weddell Sea. 4 bulk samples, one from each sedimentation area, contain 9 to 28 wt.-% of biogenic opal , the clay fraction of the 24 samples investigated have 2 to 82 wt.-%. The fluorine concentration in the amorphous biogenic component is 15 ppm. 300 to 800 ppm of fluorine were measured in the clay fractions, 330 to 920 ppm in their lithogenic components. Biogenic opal causes a decrease in fluorine concentration of the sediment by a considerable amount: 6 to 56 % relative to the clay fraction, due to the proportions involved. Biogenic opal is therefore taken into account as a 'diluting' factor for the fluorine budget in marine sediments.

Holocene laminated sediments in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, are interrupted by frequent, non-laminated, massive layers. These layers may be debris flows released by earthquakes or bioturbated sediments deposited during periods of relatively high bottom water oxygen concentration and/or low surface productivity, or both. We determined the organic carbon content and the concentration of a suite of redox-sensitive metals in bulk sediments at approximately 1-cm resolution across a laminated-massive-laminated interval (ODP Leg 169S Sample 1033B-4H-4,54-74), to determine the redox conditions under which the massive layer was deposited. Our results indicate that this massive interval was deposited under anoxic bottom waters. Manganese/Al ratios are consistently low throughout the massive section, while Mo/Al, Cd/Al, Re/Al, and U/Al ratios are enriched relative to their metal/Al ratios in detrital material (represented by Cowichan River suspended sediments). The concentration of organic carbon in the lower portion of the massive layer is higher than in the upper portion, which has a concentration similar to that in the overlying and underlying laminated sediments. Well-defined peaks in Mo/Al, Cd/Al, and Re/Al and a broad peak in U/Al occur in the lower portion of the massive layer. The positions of the Cd/Al, Re/Al, and Mo/Al peaks, as well as the increase in organic carbon content with depth in the massive layer, are best explained by a process of diagenetic redistribution of metals that occurred after the massive layer was emplaced.
