Maintaining a high level of data security with a low impact on system performance is more challenging in wireless multimedia applications. Protocols that are used for wireless local area network (WLAN) security are known to significantly degrade performance. In this paper, we propose an enhanced security system for a WLAN. Our new design aims to decrease the processing delay and increase both the speed and throughput of the system, thereby making it more efficient for multimedia applications. Our design is based on the idea of offloading computationally intensive encryption and authentication services to the end systems’ CPUs. The security operations are performed by the hosts’ central processor (which is usually a powerful processor) before delivering the data to a wireless card (which usually has a low-performance processor). By adopting this design, we show that both the delay and the jitter are significantly reduced. At the access point, we improve the performance of network processing hardware for real-time cryptographic processing by using a specialized processor implemented with field-programmable gate array technology. Furthermore, we use enhanced techniques to implement the Counter (CTR) Mode with Cipher Block Chaining Message Authentication Code Protocol (CCMP) and the CTR protocol. Our experiments show that it requires timing in the range of 20–40 μs to perform data encryption and authentication on different end-host CPUs (e.g., Intel Core i5, i7, and AMD 6-Core) as compared with 10–50 ms when performed using the wireless card. Furthermore, when compared with the standard WiFi protected access II (WPA2), results show that our proposed security system improved the speed to up to 3.7 times.

Signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) performance of a multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband system with residual timing offset is investigated. To do so, an exact mathematical derivation of the SIR of this system is derived. It becomes obvious that, unlike a cyclic prefixing based system, a zero padding based system is sensitive to residual timing offset.

RESUMO - Os sistemas de saúde deparam-se, actualmente, com novos paradigmas, ao nível da qualidade da prestação de cuidados de saúde, bem como no que se refere à necessidade de controlo dos custos com o sector da saúde, obrigando as organizações a adaptarem-se por forma a fornecerem a resposta mais adequada às crescentes necessidades dos indivíduos. O reconhecimento desta realidade tem levado os governos de muitos países a definir políticas orientadas para problemas de saúde específicos e a adoptar estratégias de intervenção que privilegiam uma abordagem integrada com o objectivo de melhorarem progressivamente o nível de saúde das populações, a qualidade dos cuidados prestados e a eficiência na utilização de recursos. Em Portugal, a aplicação dos princípios que estiveram na base dos modelos de gestão da doença, deu origem ao modelo experimental de Gestão Integrada da Doença, que incorpora a gestão clínica da doença, centrada no doente, com especial enfoque na sua autogestão e na clarificação das melhores práticas profissionais, visando a sua uniformização; a reorganização do modelo de prestação de cuidados, com a criação de Centros de Elevada Diferenciação e Centros de Tratamento, com especiais preocupações no que concerne à orientação do doente no sistema para que os cuidados lhe seja ministrados no nível mais adequado; um modelo de financiamento específico, indexado aos resultados, que reflicta a adopção das melhores práticas; um sistema de informação que permita a monitorização e avaliação constante deste processo. O desenvolvimento deste modelo organizacional tem-se revelado como uma estratégia inovadora e como uma ferramenta de elevado potencial para a melhoria da prestação de cuidados de saúde e para a promoção de uma maior efectividade e eficiência, tal como poderá, ainda, constituirse como um veículo, importante e permanente, de informação de apoio à decisão em Saúde. Este modelo visa, no fundo, promover uma acção concertada no sentido da obtenção de uma intervenção precisa, através da mobilização de recursos adequados, que permitam uma melhoria do estado de saúde, da qualidade de vida e do bem-estar global dos doentes. Esta abordagem passa pela colaboração e coordenação dos diferentes níveis de prestação de cuidados, no sentido de oferecerem cuidados integrados de saúde, com níveis de qualidade elevados em termos de prevenção, diagnóstico, tratamento, reabilitação e acompanhamento. ------------------------ --ABSTRACT – The health systems are faced with new paradigms, on one hand in the healthcare services delivered to the populations, and on the other hand, in the need to control costs in the health sector, forcing organizations to adapt and provide the most appropriate response to the individuals growing needs. The magnitude of this problem, in terms of public health, requires the adoption of a directed, targeted, planned and integrated action, based on clear and well defined strategies in order to obtain health gains, improving the quality of care and streamlining the costs. In Portugal, the application of those principles forming the basis of the disease management models, led to the Integrated Disease Management model which, apart from the clinical management of the disease, also incorporates the healthcare delivery structure reorganization, a specific financing model based on an information system that allows the process monitoring and evaluation. The development of Integrated Disease Management models is a central strategy and a tool for improving healthcare delivery, more effectively and efficiently, and can even be an important and permanent vehicle of information for health decision support. Therefore, it is important to promote a concerted action towards achieving a precise intervention, mobilizing the resources, improving the health status, quality of life and the overall patients’ wellbeing. Sulfadiazine is an antibiotic of the sulfonamide group and is used as a veterinary drug in fish farming. Monitoring it in the tanks is fundamental to control the applied doses and avoid environmental dissemination. Pursuing this goal, we included a novel potentiometric design in a flow-injection assembly. The electrode body was a stainless steel needle veterinary syringe of 0.8-mm inner diameter. A selective membrane of PVC acted as a sensory surface. Its composition, the length of the electrode, and other flow variables were optimized. The best performance was obtained for sensors of 1.5-cm length and a membrane composition of 33% PVC, 66% onitrophenyloctyl ether, 1% ion exchanger, and a small amount of a cationic additive. It exhibited Nernstian slopes of 61.0 mV decade-1 down to 1.0×10-5 mol L-1, with a limit of detection of 3.1×10-6 mol L-1 in flowing media. All necessary pH/ionic strength adjustments were performed online by merging the sample plug with a buffer carrier of 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid, pH 4.9. The sensor exhibited the advantages of a fast response time (less than 15 s), long operational lifetime (60 days), and good selectivity for chloride, nitrite, acetate, tartrate, citrate, and ascorbate. The flow setup was successfully applied to the analysis of aquaculture waters. The analytical results were validated against those obtained with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry procedures. The sampling rate was about 84 samples per hour and recoveries ranged from 95.9 to 106.9%.

Molecular imprinting is a useful technique for the preparation of functional materials with molecular recognition properties. A Biomimetic Sensor Potentiometric System was developed for assessment of doxycycline (DOX) antibiotic. The molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by using doxycycline as a template molecule, methacrylic acid (MAA) and/or acrylamide (AA) as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylat (EGDMA) as a cross-linking agent. The sensing elements were fabricated by the inclusion of DOX imprinted polymers in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix. The sensors showed a high selectivity and a sensitive response to the template in aqueous system. Electrochemical evaluation of these sensors under static (batch) mode of operation reveals near-Nernstian response. MIP/MAA membrane sensor was incorporated in flow-through cells and used as detectors for flow injection analysis (FIA) of DOX. The method has the requisite accuracy, sensitivity and precision to assay DOX in tablets and biological fluids.

In this paper, we apply multidimensional scaling (MDS) and parametric similarity indices (PSI) in the analysis of complex systems (CS). Each CS is viewed as a dynamical system, exhibiting an output time-series to be interpreted as a manifestation of its behavior. We start by adopting a sliding window to sample the original data into several consecutive time periods. Second, we define a given PSI for tracking pieces of data. We then compare the windows for different values of the parameter, and we generate the corresponding MDS maps of ‘points’. Third, we use Procrustes analysis to linearly transform the MDS charts for maximum superposition and to build a global MDS map of “shapes”. This final plot captures the time evolution of the phenomena and is sensitive to the PSI adopted. The generalized correlation, the Minkowski distance and four entropy-based indices are tested. The proposed approach is applied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average stock market index and the Europe Brent Spot Price FOB time-series.

A theory of free vibrations of discrete fractional order (FO) systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom (dof) is developed. A FO system with a finite number of dof is defined by means of three matrices: mass inertia, system rigidity and FO elements. By adopting a matrix formulation, a mathematical description of FO discrete system free vibrations is determined in the form of coupled fractional order differential equations (FODE). The corresponding solutions in analytical form, for the special case of the matrix of FO properties elements, are determined and expressed as a polynomial series along time. For the eigen characteristic numbers, the system eigen main coordinates and the independent eigen FO modes are determined. A generalized function of visoelastic creep FO dissipation of energy and generalized forces of system with no ideal visoelastic creep FO dissipation of energy for generalized coordinates are formulated. Extended Lagrange FODE of second kind, for FO system dynamics, are also introduced. Two examples of FO chain systems are analyzed and the corresponding eigen characteristic numbers determined. It is shown that the oscillatory phenomena of a FO mechanical chain have analogies to electrical FO circuits. A FO electrical resistor is introduced and its constitutive voltage–current is formulated. Also a function of thermal energy FO dissipation of a FO electrical relation is discussed.

This paper employs the Lyapunov direct method for the stability analysis of fractional order linear systems subject to input saturation. A new stability condition based on saturation function is adopted for estimating the domain of attraction via ellipsoid approach. To further improve this estimation, the auxiliary feedback is also supported by the concept of stability region. The advantages of the proposed method are twofold: (1) it is straightforward to handle the problem both in analysis and design because of using Lyapunov method, (2) the estimation leads to less conservative results. A numerical example illustrates the feasibility of the proposed method.

In this work the mission control and supervision system developed for the ROAZ Autonomous Surface Vehicle is presented. Complexity in mission requirements coupled with flexibility lead to the design of a modular hierarchical mission control system based on hybrid systems control. Monitoring and supervision control for a vehicle such as ROAZ mission is not an easy task using tools with low complexity and yet powerful enough. A set of tools were developed to perform both on board mission control and remote planning and supervision. “ROAZ- Mission Control” was developed to be used in support to bathymetric and security missions performed in river and at seas.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the identification of 19 Brazilian C. dubliniensis based on the biochemical profile exhibited when tested by the commercial identification kit ID 32C (bioMerieux). Thirteen of the isolates were rigorously identified as C. dubliniensis and the remaining isolates (six) were considered as having a doubtful profile but the software also suggested that there was 83.6% of chances for them to be C. dubliniensis. As well as pointed by the literature the identification obtained by phenotypic tests should be considered presumptive for C. dubliniensis due to variability of this new species.

An adaptive control damping the forced vibration of a car while passing along a bumpy road is investigated. It is based on a simple kinematic description of the desired behavior of the damped system. A modified PID controller containing an approximation of Caputo’s fractional derivative suppresses the high-frequency components related to the bumps and dips, while the low frequency part of passing hills/valleys are strictly traced. Neither a complete dynamic model of the car nor ’a priori’ information on the surface of the road is needed. The adaptive control realizes this kinematic design in spite of the existence of dynamically coupled, excitable internal degrees of freedom. The method is investigated via Scicos-based simulation in the case of a paradigm. It was found that both adaptivity and fractional order derivatives are essential parts of the control that can keep the vibration of the load at bay without directly controlling its motion.
