Part I. Hydraulics of tidal inlets: simple analytic models for the engineer

Inlets are common coastal features around the world. Essentially an inlet connects a lagoon, a bay or an estuary to the ocean (or sea), and the flow through the inlet channel is primarily induced by the tidal rise and fall of water level in the ocean. When speaking of the hydraulics of an inlet, one is interested mainly in determining the flow through the inlet and the tidal variation in the bay, given the following: (1) Inlet geometry (2) Bay geometry (3) Bottom sediment characteristics in the inlet (4) Fresh water inflow into the bay (and out through the inlet) (5) Ocean tide characteristics A combination of all these factors can produce a rather complex situation. Rapid determination of total CLA concentration in beef fat

[EN]Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has many potential healthful properties, and beef is naturally enriched with CLA. Simple and rapid methods to measure total CLA were investigated to enable sorting of beef carcasses with potential enhanced economic value. Direct alcohol extraction combined with measuring absorbance was simple, accurate and perhaps the most viable method for rapid carcass sorting compared to methods using saponification or methylation followed by extraction.

Starting Nozzle Flow Simulation Using K-G Two-Equation Turbulence Model

The starting process of two-dimensional nozzle flows has been simulated with Euler, laminar and k - g two-equation turbulence Navier-Stokes equations. The flow solver is based on a combination of LUSGS subiteration implicit method and five spatial discretized schemes, which are Roe, HLLE, MHLLE upwind schemes and AUSM+, AUSMPW schemes. In the paper, special attention is for the flow differences of the nozzle starting process obtained from different governing equations and different schemes. Two nozzle flows, previously investigated experimentally and numerically by other researchers, are chosen as our examples. The calculated results indicate the carbuncle phenomenon and unphysical oscillations appear more or less near a wall or behind strong shock wave except using HLLE scheme, and these unphysical phenomena become more seriously with the increase of Mach number. Comparing the turbulence calculation, inviscid solution cannot simulate the wall flow separation and the laminar solution shows some different flow characteristics in the regions of flow separation and near wall.
