The solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method has been used for the synthesis of colloids of metal nanoparticles. It is a top-down approach involving condensation of metal atoms in low temperature solvent matrices in a SMAD reactor maintained at 77 K. Warming of the matrix results in a slurry of metal atoms that interact with one another to form particles that grow in size. The organic solvent solvates the particles and acts as a weak capping agent to halt/slow down the growth process to a certain extent. This as-prepared colloid consists of metal nanoparticles that are quite polydisperse. In a process termed as digestive ripening, addition of a capping agent to the as-prepared colloid which is polydisperse renders it highly monodisperse either under ambient or thermal conditions. In this, as yet not well-understood process, smaller particles grow and the larger ones diminish in size until the system attains uniformity in size and a dynamic equilibrium is established. Using the SMAD method in combination with digestive ripening process, highly monodisperse metal, core-shell, alloy, and composite nanoparticles have been synthesized. This article is a review of our contributions together with some literature reports on this methodology to realize various nanostructured materials.

An operator-splitting finite element method for solving high-dimensional parabolic equations is presented. The stability and the error estimates are derived for the proposed numerical scheme. Furthermore, two variants of fully-practical operator-splitting finite element algorithms based on the quadrature points and the nodal points, respectively, are presented. Both the quadrature and the nodal point based operator-splitting algorithms are validated using a three-dimensional (3D) test problem. The numerical results obtained with the full 3D computations and the operator-split 2D + 1D computations are found to be in a good agreement with the analytical solution. Further, the optimal order of convergence is obtained in both variants of the operator-splitting algorithms. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The solution of the forward equation that models the transport of light through a highly scattering tissue material in diffuse optical tomography (DOT) using the finite element method gives flux density (Phi) at the nodal points of the mesh. The experimentally measured flux (U-measured) on the boundary over a finite surface area in a DOT system has to be corrected to account for the system transfer functions (R) of various building blocks of the measurement system. We present two methods to compensate for the perturbations caused by R and estimate true flux density (Phi) from U-measured(cal). In the first approach, the measurement data with a homogeneous phantom (U-measured(homo)) is used to calibrate the measurement system. The second scheme estimates the homogeneous phantom measurement using only the measurement from a heterogeneous phantom, thereby eliminating the necessity of a homogeneous phantom. This is done by statistically averaging the data (U-measured(hetero)) and redistributing it to the corresponding detector positions. The experiments carried out on tissue mimicking phantom with single and multiple inhomogeneities, human hand, and a pork tissue phantom demonstrate the robustness of the approach. Acoustic modeling using mixtures of multivariate Gaussians is the prevalent approach for many speech processing problems. Computing likelihoods against a large set of Gaussians is required as a part of many speech processing systems and it is the computationally dominant phase for LVCSR systems. We express the likelihood computation as a multiplication of matrices representing augmented feature vectors and Gaussian parameters. The computational gain of this approach over traditional methods is by exploiting the structure of these matrices and efficient implementation of their multiplication. In particular, we explore direct low-rank approximation of the Gaussian parameter matrix and indirect derivation of low-rank factors of the Gaussian parameter matrix by optimum approximation of the likelihood matrix. We show that both the methods lead to similar speedups but the latter leads to far lesser impact on the recognition accuracy. Experiments on a 1138 word vocabulary RM1 task using Sphinx 3.7 system show that, for a typical case the matrix multiplication approach leads to overall speedup of 46%. Both the low-rank approximation methods increase the speedup to around 60%, with the former method increasing the word error rate (WER) from 3.2% to 6.6%, while the latter increases the WER from 3.2% to 3.5%.

Decoding of linear space-time block codes (STBCs) with sphere-decoding (SD) is well known. A fast-version of the SD known as fast sphere decoding (FSD) has been recently studied by Biglieri, Hong and Viterbo. Viewing a linear STBC as a vector space spanned by its defining weight matrices over the real number field, we define a quadratic form (QF), called the Hurwitz-Radon QF (HRQF), on this vector space and give a QF interpretation of the FSD complexity of a linear STBC. It is shown that the FSD complexity is only a function of the weight matrices defining the code and their ordering, and not of the channel realization (even though the equivalent channel when SD is used depends on the channel realization) or the number of receive antennas. It is also shown that the FSD complexity is completely captured into a single matrix obtained from the HRQF. Moreover, for a given set of weight matrices, an algorithm to obtain a best ordering of them leading to the least FSD complexity is presented. The well known classes of low FSD complexity codes (multi-group decodable codes, fast decodable codes and fast group decodable codes) are presented in the framework of HRQF.

Riboflavin tetraacetate-catalyzed aerobic photooxidation of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanol was investigated as a model reaction under blue visible light in different soft gel materials, aiming to establish their potential as reaction vessels for photochemical transformations. Three strategies involving different degrees of organization of the catalyst within the gel network were explored, and the results compared to those obtained in homogeneous and micellar solutions. In general, physical entrapment of both the catalyst and the substrate under optimized concentrations into several hydrogel matrices (including low-molecular-weight and biopolymer-based gels) allowed the photooxidation with conversions between 55 and 100% within 120 min (TOF similar to 0.045-0.08 min(-1); k(obs) similar to 0.011-0.028 min(-1)), albeit with first-order rates ca. 1-3-fold lower than in solution under comparable non-stirred conditions. Remarkably, the organogel made of a cyclohexane-based bisamide gelator in CH3CN not only prevented the photodegradation of the catalyst but also afforded full conversion in less than 60 min (TOF similar to 0.167 min(-1); k(obs) similar to 0.073 min(-1)) without the need of additional proton transfer mediators (e. g., thiourea) as it occurs in CH3CN solutions. In general, the gelators could be recycled without detriment to their gelation ability and reaction rates. Moreover, kinetics could be fine-tuned according to the characteristics of the gel media. For instance, entangled fibrillar networks with relatively high mechanical strength were usually associated with lower reaction rates, whereas wrinkled laminated morphologies seemed to favor the reaction. In addition, the kinetics results showed in most cases a good correlation with the aeration efficiency of the gel media.

Three new compounds of bismuth, C4N2H10]center dotBi(C7H4NO4)(C7H3NO4)]center dot H2O, I, Bi(C5H3N2O4) (C5H2N2O4)], II, and Bi(mu(2)-OH)(C7H3NO4)], III, have been prepared by the reaction between bismuth nitrate and heterocyclic aromatic dicarboxylic acids, 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid, and 3,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, respectively, under hydrothermal conditions. The structures of all the compounds have linkages between Bi2O2 and the corresponding dicarboxylate forming a simple molecular unit in I, a bilayer arrangement in II, and a three-dimensional extended structure in III. The topological arrangement of the nodal building units in the structures indicates that a brucite-related layer (II) and fluorite-related arrangement (III) can be realized in these structures. By utilizing the secondary interactions, one can correlate the structure of III to a Kagome-related one. The observation of such classical inorganic related structures in the bismuth carboxylates is noteworthy. Lewis acid catalytic studies on the formation of ketal suggest the possible participatory role of the lone pair of electrons. All the compounds are characterized employing elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, and thermal studies.

The configuration of hemoglobin in solution and confined inside silica nanotubes has been studied using synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering and electrochemical activity. Confinement inside submicron tubes of silica aid in preventing protein aggregation, which is vividly observed for unconfined protein in solution. The radius of gyration (R-g) and size polydispersity (p) of confined hemoglobin was found to be lower than that in solution. This was also recently demonstrated in case of confined hemoglobin inside layered polymer capsules. The confined hemoglobin displayed a higher thermal stability with Rg and p showing negligible changes in the temperature range 25-75 degrees C. The differences in configuration between the confined and unconfined protein were reflected in their electrochemical activity. Reversible electrochemical response (from cyclic voltammograms) obtained in case of the confined hemoglobin, in contrary to the observance of only a cathodic response for the unconfined protein, gave direct indication of the differences between the residences of the electroactive heme center in a different orientation compared to that in solution state. The confined Hb showed loss of reversibility only at higher temperatures. The electron transfer coefficient (alpha) and electron transfer rate constant (k(s)) were also different, providing additional evidence regarding structural differences between the unconfined and confined states of hemoglobin. Thus, absence of any adverse effects due to confinement of proteins inside the inorganic matrices such as silica nanotubes opens up new prospects for utilizing inorganic matrices as protein ``encapsulators'', as well as sensors at varying temperatures.

We consider the Randall-Sundrum (RS) setup to be a theory of flavor, as an alternative to Froggatt-Nielsen models instead of as a solution to the hierarchy problem. The RS framework is modified by taking the low-energy brane to be at the grand unified theory (GUT) scale. This also alleviates constraints from flavor physics. Fermion masses and mixing angles are fit at the GUT scale. The ranges of the bulk mass parameters are determined using a chi(2) fit taking into consideration the variation in O(1) parameters. In the hadronic sector, the heavy top quark requires large bulk mass parameters localizing the right-handed top quark close to the IR brane. Two cases of neutrino masses are considered: (a) Planck scale lepton number violation and (b) Dirac neutrino masses. Contrary to the case of weak scale RS models, both these cases give reasonable fits to the data, with the Planck scale lepton number violation fitting slightly better compared to the Dirac case. In the supersymmetric version, the fits are not significantly different except for the variation in tan beta. If the Higgs superfields and the supersymmetry breaking spurion are localized on the same brane, then the structure of the sfermion masses are determined by the profiles of the zero modes of the hypermultiplets in the bulk. Trilinear terms have the same structure as the Yukawa matrices. The resultant squark spectrum is around similar to 2-3 TeV required by the light Higgs mass to be around 125 GeV and to satisfy the flavor violating constraints.

This paper presents the modelling and analysis of voltage stability at AC commutation bus in LCC (Line commutated converters) based multi-infeed HVDC system. The paper also presents the analysis of effects of various operating control modes in HVDC as well as location of disturbance on the voltage stability of the system under study. A new method of modelling the LCC converters as time varying admittance at the AC commutation bus is also presented in this paper. In this paper, the modelling of STATCOM for provision of dynamic voltage support at one of the AC buses of the HVDC system is presented. The reactive power injected by STATCOM is controlled by regulating the voltage of the AC bus to which STATCOM is connected. The case study also discusses the effects of various possible combinations of location of STATCOM and disturbance considered, on the voltage stability of the multi-infeed HVDC system.

In a quantum system, there may be many density matrices associated with a state on an algebra of observables. For each density matrix, one can compute its entropy. These are, in general, different. Therefore, one reaches the remarkable possibility that there may be many entropies for a given state R. Sorkin (private communication)]. This ambiguity in entropy can often be traced to a gauge symmetry emergent from the nontrivial topological character of the configuration space of the underlying system. It can also happen in finite-dimensional matrix models. In the present work, we discuss this entropy ambiguity and its consequences for an ethylene molecule. This is a very simple and well-known system, where these notions can be put to tests. Of particular interest in this discussion is the fact that the change of the density matrix with the corresponding entropy increase drives the system towards the maximally disordered state with maximum entropy, where Boltzman's formula applies. Besides its intrinsic conceptual interest, the simplicity of this model can serve as an introduction to a similar discussion of systems such as colored monopoles and the breaking of color symmetry.
