Ectotherm antipredator behaviour might be strongly affected both by body temperature and size: when environmental temperatures do not favour maximal locomotor performance, large individuals may confront predators, whereas small animals may flee, simply because they have no other option. However, integration of body size and temperature effects is rarely approached in the study of antipredator behaviour in vertebrate ectotherms. In the present study we investigated whether temperature affects antipredator responses of tegu lizards, Tupinambis merianae, with distinct body sizes, testing the hypothesis that small tegus (juveniles) run away from predators regardless of the environmental temperature, because defensive aggression may not be an effective predator deterrent, whereas adults, which are larger, use aggressive defence at low temperatures, when running performance might be suboptimal. We recorded responses of juvenile (small) and adult (large) tegu lizards to a simulated predatory attack at five environmental temperatures in the laboratory. Most differences between the two size classes were observed at low temperatures: large tegus were more aggressive overall than were small tegus at all temperatures tested, but at lower temperatures, the small lizards often used escape responses whereas the large ones either adopted a defensive posture or remained inactive. These results provide strong evidence that body size and temperature affect the antipredator responses of vertebrate ectotherms. We discuss the complex and intricate network of evolutionary and ecological parameters that are likely to be involved in the evolution of such interactions. Water sorption isotherms for vacuum-dried persimmon pulp (PP) powder were determined in the temperature range of 20-50C, and the effects of maltodextrin (MD) or gum arabic (GA) addition on the water sorption behavior of the dried powders were analyzed. Several models were evaluated to fit the experimental data and the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer model was selected as the most adequate to describe the observed behavior. Addition of encapsulants affected the isotherms: at the same water activity, PP powder with added GA (PP + GA) or MD (PP + MD) presented lower equilibrium water content than pure PP and were less affected by temperature variations. Samples of PP + MD presented lower equilibrium moisture content than those of PP + GA. The isosteric heats of sorption of pulp powders with encapsulants were higher (less negative) than those of PP, suggesting that there are more active polar sites in PP than in pulp powder containing encapsulants.PRACTICAL APPLICATIONSThe choice of persimmon to carry out this work was due to the large persimmon production available in Brazil; moreover, persimmon pulp is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and iron, as well as in phenolic compounds. Drying of fruit pulps with high sugar content presents technical difficulties because the hygroscopicity and thermoplasticity of the resulting powders when exposed to high temperature and relative humidity. For this reason, addition of high-molar-mass biopolymers, such as maltodextrin or gum arabic, is a strategy to aid drying and to improve storage stability. Knowledge of water sorption isotherms and net isosteric heats of sorption is important to various food processing operations, including drying, storage and packaging. They are useful in calculating time and energy consumptions during drying, modeling moisture changes during storage and predicting shelf life of food products.

O crambe é uma cultura promissora para produção de biodiesel, principalmente pelo alto conteúdo de óleo de suas sementes. No entanto, não há metodologias estabelecidas para avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes desta espécie e lotes não podem ser comparados, especialmente por testes de vigor, como o de envelhecimento acelerado. O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito da alta temperatura e do período de exposição durante o teste de envelhecimento acelerado na qualidade fisiológica e atividade enzimática de sementes de crambe. Dois lotes de sementes de crambe, cultivar Brilhante, foram analisados por meio dos testes de teor de água, massa de 1.000 sementes, germinação, primeira contagem, condutividade elétrica, atividade enzimática (peroxidase e superóxido dismutase) e comprimento de plântulas. As avaliações foram conduzidas antes e após o envelhecimento acelerado, que foram testadas diferentes temperaturas (38, 40 e 42ºC) e períodos de exposição (24, 48 e 72h). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey (p < 0.05). O teste de Dunnet (p < 0.05) foi utilizado para comparar os valores da testemunha (antes do envelhecimento acelerado) com cada valor médio individualmente. O teste de correlação linear simples também foi aplicado. Conclui-se que a interação temperatura x período de exposição afeta a qualidade fisiológica das sementes e a atividade enzimática e que as melhores condições durante o teste de envelhecimento acelerado são dependentes do genótipo.

The electrical properties of the grain boundary region of electroceramic sensor temperature based on inverse spinel Zn7Sb2O12 were investigated at high temperature. The zinc antimoniate was synthesized by a chemical route based on the modified Pechini method. The electric properties of Zn7Sb2O12 were investigated by impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 5 Hz to 13 MHz and from 250 up to 600 degreesC. The grain boundary conductivity follows the Arrhenius law, with two linear branches of different slopes. These branches exhibit activation energies with very similar values; the low-temperature (less than or equal to350 degreesC) and high-temperature (greater than or equal to400 degreesC) regions are equal to 1.15 and 1.16 eV, respectively. Dissimilar behavior is observed on the relaxation time (tau) curve as a function of temperature, where a single slope is identified. The negative temperature coefficient parameters and nature of the polarization phenomenon of the grain boundary are discussed. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

In southeastern Brazil the leptodactylid frogs Leptodactylus fuscus and Physalaemus fuscomaculatus enter dormancy during the dry season. Oxygen uptake was measured in awake and dormant groups of both species in a temperature range at which these frogs are usually exposed throughout the year. Oxygen uptake was lower for dormant groups at high temperature, and a lack of response to temperature was reported between 20 - 25 C in the dormant group of both species. This temperature-intensitive range can be considered an adaptive feature to save fat reserves during dormancy.

A new series of high temperature copper based shape memory alloys has recently been patented. These alloys contain 8-20 wt% Al, 1-20 wt% Ag, 0-2 wt% of a minor element (preferably Co), balance copper. The martensitic start transformation temperatures of these alloys are above 200 degrees C and, in some cases, they have good high temperature stability and may be useful in commercial applications where higher operating temperatures than those obtained from Cu-Zn-Al and Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloys are required.

Colour preference of individual juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss was tested at 1 and 12 degrees C, and also at 12 degrees C after a 42 day growth experiment under white, blue, green, yellow or red ambient colour. All experiments were carried out under controlled laboratory conditions and the preference was assessed by the location of the fish in a preference tank with four chambers. Rainbow trout showed a preference for blue and green at 1 degrees C and for green at 12 degrees C. After the growth experiment the fish reared in blue tanks preferred blue and green but green was the most preferred colour for the fish reared in green, yellow and red tanks. Yellow and especially red chambers were avoided, irrespective of the ambient colour during the growth trial. The final mass of fish reared in the red aquaria was significantly smaller than that of the fish in green tanks. In addition, when the data of the preference tests were correlated with the data of the growth experiment using mean values of the four tested colours, a very good linear relationship was observed between the preference (i.e. visit frequency in coloured compartments) and growth rate as well as food intake. When considering the results both from the preference and growth trials it is suggested that green is the best environmental colour for rearing juvenile rainbow trout while rearing in a red environment cannot be recommended. In temporary ponds tadpoles of the frogs Leptodactylus fuscus and Hyla fuscovaria may be exposed to temperatures up to 40-44°C. Experimental exposure to high temperature revealed survivals after 30 min at 42°C for H. fuscovaria and at 44°C for L. fuscus. -from Authors
