Our aim in this article is to accomplish an afterthought concerning contemporary fiction. Taken as initial the afterthought of the role of the novel as fiction and its linking with the afterthought of mimesis in modernity, we aim to consider the presence of agony not only as a theme but also as a structural element of narratives. Eventually, we will make brief tallies of theses aspects in the work of José Saramago.

The short story “Os desastres de Sofia” (1964), of Clarice Lispector, can be read as fictional metaphor for the way as the writer elaborated and presented the concept of “Vanguard”. Philosophical reflections of Walter Benjamin (1933) contains the arguments that Clarice, in this narrative, invigorates, by the use of modern keys, vanguardist, according to her conception, which Benjamin sanctioned by the melancholic look of the past. Clarice is notable as a writer of prose affiliated with the brazilian modern poetry.

The concept of gender is relational and refers to the the overcoming of the biological determinism, it has historical and cultural roots going beyond the anatomical differences between men and women. This documental research investigated patterns of sexuality and gender in sexual education books for children and teenagers. Ten books were analyzed, selected in bookstores websites. The content of the books and their illustrations show: 1) stereotypical and naturalized view of femininity and masculinity, 2) patterns of traditional and patriarchal families, 3) romanticized concept of marriage and reproduction, 4) stereotypes of beauty and "normal" body. It is concluded that sexual education books for children and teenagers reproduce normative standards that can stimulate a sexist education and should not be used in works of sexual education without critical reflection.

From the reading of contemporary Portuguese fiction, after the Carnation’s Revoluction, in 1974, we can observe an opening in the literary and academic ambiences to the treatment of themes, silenced before for the New State despotism. Considering the postmoderns proposals of reviewing the canon, we mark the necessity of a homoerotism inclusion as one of the most fundamental theme for the comprehension of the actual literary production in Portugal.

The aim of this essay is to offer a new angle on the novel A sombra dos dias [The shadow of the days] by Guilherme de Melo, published in 1981, stressing the homoerotic look on Mozambique's Colonial War and the Lourenço Marques society of the time, recreated her in another direction, revealing the scenarios and the behavior of that society. We propose a rereading of a not too distant past, which still has political and cultural effects on Portuguese society.

Literature has always had a tense relationship with school. On the one hand, its educational function which is a feature of its own has motivated its insertion into curricula; on the other hand, its pedagogical use seems to defile its esthetical value. Such a paradox may be clearly observed in juvenile literature whose specificity has not always been acknowledged. To discuss the alleged specificity of that literary subgenre and its use in school, this essay compares the books A órbita dos caracóis (2003), by Reinaldo Moraes, and Se eu fechar os olhos agora (2009), by Edney Silverstre, which have in common their possible destination to the juvenile public, even though neither of them has been conceived of with that purpose in mind.

This text’s objective is to present an analysis of Aída, adapted by Han Mi-Ho (2012) and illustrated by Lucia Sforza, from the classic eponymous opera by Giuseppe Verdi. This book is part of the collection Classical music on the scene, published by FTD, which aims to introduce stories of important librettos regarded as classics in the music field to young audiences. More specifically, we intend to verify in this text, with Bakhtinian principles, how the dialogue between Verdi’s work and HanMi-Ho’s is actualized. To achieve these objectives, we will present a reflection of what provides the pleasure in reading. In this text we built the hypothesis that Han-Mi-Ho’s strategy to rescue a classic opera and adapt it in the form of an illustrated narrative for the young reader provides the contact with an attractive and playful text that leads to critical reflection and expands his knowledge through the rescue of the cultural memory. The appropriation of a classic cultural production adapted to the narrative language and targeted to a young audience can act as an appraisal factor in the identity of the reader. Through it, he is able to raise his self-esteem, because he perceives that he is considered as a production receiver, while at the same time he is recognized as the heir of a traditional cultural heritage.

Introduction: the assessment of the activity of rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis is made by means of different tools, respectively DAS-28 and JADAS.Objective: To compare DAS-28 and JADAS with scores of 71, 27 and 10 joint counts in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.Method: A secondary analysis of a phase III placebo-controlled trial, testing safety and efficacy of abatacept was conducted in 8 patients with 178 assessment visits. Joint count scores for active and limited joints, physician's and parents'global assessment by 0-10 cm Visual Analog Scale, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate normalized to 0-10 scale, in all visits. The comparison among the activity indices in different observations was made through Anova or adjusted gamma model. The paired observations between DAS-28 and JADAS 71, 27 and 10, respectively, were analyzed by linear regression. Results: There were significant differences among individual measures, except for ESR, in the first four months of biological treatment, when five of the eight patients reached ACR-Pedi 30, with improvement. The indices of DAS-28, JADAS 71, 27 and 10 also showed significant difference during follow-up. Linear regression adjusted model between DAS-28 and JADAS resulted in mathematical formulas for conversion: [DAS-28 = 0.0709 (JADAS 71) + 1.267] (R-2 = 0.49); [DAS-28 = 0.084 (JADAS 27) + 1.7404] (R-2 = 0.47) and [DAS-28 = 0.1129 (JADAS-10) + 1.5748] (R-2 = 0.50).Conclusion: The conversion of scores of DAS-28 and JADAS 71, 27 and 10 for this mathematical model would allow equivalent application of both in adolescents with arthritis. Space is certainly one of the most important basic narrative categories to be considered when studying different fictional media formats; it encompasses a range of rich attributes. While we perceive the preference cinema gives to this narrative category by the fact that the Seventh Art is known as the “art of space”, the occurrence of digital media makes us realize that space has to be explored virtually, providing the interacting person with the feeling that he, too, has room in the fictional world.
