With the purpose of solving the real solutions number of the nonlinear transcendental equations in the selective harmonic eliminated PWM (SHEPWM) technology, the nonlinear transcendental equations were transformed to a set of polynomial equations with a set of inequality constraints using the multiple-angle formulas, an analytic method based on semi-algebraic systems machine proving algorithm was proposed to classify the real solution number of the switching angles. The complete classifications of the real solution number and the analytic boundary point of the single phase and three phases SHEPWM inverter with switch points of N=3 and the single phase SHEPWM inverter with switch points of N=4 are obtained. The results indicate that the relationship between the modulation ratio and the real solution number can be demonstrated theoretically by this method, which has great implications for the solution procedure of switching angles and the improvement of harmonic elimination effects of the inverter.

This study aimed to gain a better understanding of the metabolic fate of dietary fatty acids in rainbow trout, with a specific focus on the effect of varying total C18 PUFA level. Fish were fed a control fish oil based diet or one of five experimental fish oil deprived diets formulated with a constant 1/1 ratio of 18:3n-3/18:2n-6 and varying total C18 PUFA levels for a period of 7 weeks. The transcriptional changes of the Δ-6 desaturase and elongase enzymes in direct comparison to in vivo fatty acid bioconversion, estimated using the whole-body fatty acid balance method, were analysed. The main findings were that i) the efficiency of Δ-6 desaturase was negatively affected by C18 PUFA availability, but the total apparent in vivo enzyme activity was directly proportional to C18 PUFA substrate availability; ii) Δ-6 desaturase had a greater affinity towards n-3PUFA than n-6PUFA; iii) excessive C18 PUFA substrate availability could limit the availability of Δ-6 desaturase to act on C24 fatty acid; iv) the elimination of dietary n-3LC-PUFA (enzyme products) up-regulated the transcription rate of Δ-6 desaturase; but v) the total apparent in vivo enzyme activity was directly and positively affected by substrate availability, and not product presence/absence nor the extent of the enzyme transcription rate.

In this paper, we present techniques for inverting sparse, symmetric and positive definite matrices on parallel and distributed computers. We propose two algorithms, one for SIMD implementation and the other for MIMD implementation. These algorithms are modified versions of Gaussian elimination and they take into account the sparseness of the matrix. Our algorithms perform better than the general parallel Gaussian elimination algorithm. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of our technique, we implemented the snake problem using our sparse matrix algorithm. Our studies reveal that the proposed sparse matrix inversion algorithm significantly reduces the time taken for obtaining the solution of the snake problem. In this paper, we present the results of our experimental work.

Background elimination models are widely used in motion tracking systems. Our aim is to develop a system that performs reliably under adverse lighting conditions. In particular, this includes indoor scenes lit partly or entirely by diffuse natural light. We present a modified "median value" model in which the detection threshold adapts to global changes in illumination. The responses of several models are compared, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new model.

This paper investigates the location and velocity estimation problem involving multiple targets using the phase difference and frequency shift of the returned Doppler modulated signal. The minimal receiver configuration that addresses the data association and missing information problem is presented for the case of linear arrays. Non-linearly modeled Doppler radar measurements are used to obtain an accurate estimate of the target dynamics progressively in a linear framework utilizing a recently developed robust state estimation approach.

The Multidrug Resistance Associated Proteins (MRPI, MRP2, MRP3, MRp4, MRp5, MRP6, MRP7, MRPS and MRP9) belong to the ATP-binding cassette superfamily (ABCC family) of transporters expressed differentially in the liver, kidney, intestine and blood-brain barrier. MRps transport a structurally diverse array of endo- and xenobiotics and their metabolites (in particular conjugates) and are subject to induction and inhibition by a variety of compounds. An increased efflux of natural product anticancer drugs and other anticancer agents by MRPs in cancer cells is associated with tumor resistance. These transporting proteins play a role in the absorption, distribution and elimination of various compounds in the body. There are increased reports on the clinical impact of genetic mutations of genes encoding MRP1-9. Therefore, MRPs have an important role in drug development, since a better understanding of their function and regulating mechanism can help minimize and avoid drug toxicity, unfavorable drug-drug interactions, and to overcome drug resistance.

This article describes the utilisation of an unsupervised machine learning technique and statistical approaches (e.g., the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test) that assist cycling experts in the crucial decision-making processes for athlete selection, training, and strategic planning in the track cycling Omnium. The Omnium is a multi-event competition that will be included in the summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2012. Presently, selectors and cycling coaches make decisions based on experience and intuition. They rarely have access to objective data. We analysed both the old five-event (first raced internationally in 2007) and new six-event (first raced internationally in 2011) Omniums and found that the addition of the elimination race component to the Omnium has, contrary to expectations, not favoured track endurance riders. We analysed the Omnium data and also determined the inter-relationships between different individual events as well as between those events and the final standings of riders. In further analysis, we found that there is no maximum ranking (poorest performance) in each individual event that riders can afford whilst still winning a medal. We also found the required times for riders to finish the timed components that are necessary for medal winning. The results of this study consider the scoring system of the Omnium and inform decision-making toward successful participation in future major Omnium competitions.

Most of the inverters have an isolation transformer which prevents or limits fault current between AC and DC circuits under most fault conditions. If the transformer is excluded from the system, it would increase the PV system efficiency and decrease the size of its installations, which will lead to a lower cost for the whole investment. Thus, elimination of the transformer has to be considered carefully because a galvanic connection appears between the PV arrays and the ground in the absence of an isolation transformer. The galvanic connection causes the stray capacitance between the PV arrays structure and the ground to produce a leakage current. In this paper, a review of full bridge topology with bipolar and unipolar scheme and half bridge topology carried out in regard leakage current.in addition, HERIC and H5 topologies are simulated and leakage current in these topologies are evaluated.

This paper presents evidence for the existence of ‘set-points’ for subjective wellbeing. Our results derive from a 10-year longitudinal study in which subjective wellbeing has been measured using a single question of general life satisfaction. The process of data analysis is driven by logic based on the theory of subjective wellbeing homeostasis. This analysis involves the iterative elimination of raw data, from 7,356 individual respondents, based on confidence limits. All results are projected onto a 0–100 point scale. We demonstrate evidence for the existence of set-points lying between 71 and 90 points, with an average set-point-range of 18–20 points for each person. The implications and limitations of these findings are discussed.

The melt crystallization of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and PVA composites has been a controversial subject due to inconclusive evidence and different opinions for its decomposition during crystallization. Using graphene as a model, the melt crystallization of PVA and PVA-graphene composites occurring during single-cycle and multiple-cycle non-isothermal annealing processes was systematically analyzed using different characterization techniques. The results obtained using single-cycle non-isothermal annealing indicated that the entire crystallization process took place through two main stages. The graphene in the PVA matrix regulates the nucleation and crystal growth manner of the PVA, yet resulting in retardation of the entire crystallization. The FTIR and Raman spectroscopic results particularly demonstrated that the annealing process not only improved the crystallinity but also led to clear decomposition in PVA and PVA-graphene composites, such as the elimination of hydroxyl groups and the production of C=C double bonds. The newly produced C=C double bonds were found to be responsible for the retardation of PVA macromolecule crystallization and the breaking of hydrogen bonds among the hydroxyl groups in the PVA chains. In addition, the morphological observation and multi-cycle non-isothermal crystallization further confirmed the existence of decomposition based on the surface damage as well as decreased crystallization enthalpy and crystallization peak temperature. Therefore, the non-isothermal crystallizations of the pure PVA and the PVA-graphene composites were in fact the combination of non-isothermal crystallization and non-isothermal degradation processes.

In this paper, we address a new problem of noisy images which present in the procedure of relevance feedback for medical image retrieval. We concentrate on the noisy images, caused by the users mislabeling some irrelevant images as relevant ones, and a noisy-smoothing relevance feedback (NS-RF) method is proposed. In NS-RF, a two-step strategy is proposed to handle the noisy images. In step 1, a noisy elimination algorithm is adopted to identify and eliminate the noisy images. In step 2, to further alleviate the influence of noisy images, a fuzzy membership function is employed to estimate the relevance probabilities of retained relevant images. After noisy handling, the fuzzy support vector machine, which can take into account different relevant images with different relevance probabilities, is adopted to re-rank the images. The experimental results on the IRMA medical image collection demonstrate that the proposed method can deal with the noisy images effectively.

Design of a rectangular spiral planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) at 915 MHz for wireless power transmission applications is proposed. The antenna and rectifying circuitry form a rectenna, which can produce dc power from a distant radio frequency energy transmitter. The generated dc power is used to operate a low-power deep brain stimulation pulse generator. The proposed antenna has the dimensions of 10 mm × 12.5 mm × 1.5 mm and resonance frequency of 915 MHz with a measured bandwidth of 15 MHz at return loss of -10 dB. A dielectric substrate of FR-4 of εr = 4.8 and δ = 0.015 with thickness of 1.5 mm is used for both antenna and rectifier circuit simulation and fabrication because of its availability and low cost. An L-section impedance matching circuit is used between the PIFA and voltage doubler rectifier. The impedance matching circuit also works as a low-pass filter for elimination of higher order harmonics. Maximum dc voltage at the rectenna output is 7.5 V in free space and this rectenna can drive a deep brain stimulation pulse generator at a distance of 30 cm from a radio frequency energy transmitter, which transmits power of 26.77 dBm.

Thin-film composite membranes, primarily based on poly(amide) (PA) semipermeable materials, are nowadays the dominant technology used in pressure driven water desalination systems. Despite offering superior water permeation and salt selectivity, their surface properties, such as their charge and roughness, cannot be extensively tuned due to the intrinsic fabrication process of the membranes by interfacial polymerization. The alteration of these properties would lead to a better control of the materials surface zeta potential, which is critical to finely tune selectivity and enhance the membrane materials stability when exposed to complex industrial waste streams. Low pressure plasma was employed to introduce amine functionalities onto the PA surface of commercially available thin-film composite (TFC) membranes. Morphological changes after plasma polymerization were analyzed by SEM and AFM, and average surface roughness decreased by 29%. Amine enrichment provided isoelectric point changes from pH 3.7 to 5.2 for 5 to 15 min of plasma polymerization time. Synchrotron FTIR mappings of the amine-modified surface indicated the addition of a discrete 60 nm film to the PA layer. Furthermore, metal affinity was confirmed by the enhanced binding of silver to the modified surface, supported by an increased antimicrobial functionality with demonstrable elimination of E. coli growth. Essential salt rejection was shown minimally compromised for faster polymerization processes. Plasma polymerization is therefore a viable route to producing functional amine enriched thin-film composite PA membrane surfaces.
