The Annual Condition of Education Report, 2014

The 2031 edition of the Annual Condition of Education Report provides a rich tapestry of information about Iowa's Education system. The data presented in the report examines longitudinal trends about our students, our teacher and our schools from many perspectives. Information such as demographic characteristics, assessment results, college readiness, college readiness measures, courses taken, and financial health are just a few examples, Below are highlights from the 24th edition of the report.

Microsatellites for genetic studies and breeding programs in common bean

Twenty microsatelitte loci were identified and characterized in common bean. Microsatellites were tested in 14 genotypes. The allele number ranged from 1 to 3, and the polymorphism information content (PIC) was between 0.14 and 0.65. These polymorphic markers are available to be used for breeding programs.

GWAS of 126,559 individuals identifies genetic variants associated with educational attainment.

A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment was conducted in a discovery sample of 101,069 individuals and a replication sample of 25,490. Three independent single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are genome-wide significant (rs9320913, rs11584700, rs4851266), and all three replicate. Estimated effects sizes are small (coefficient of determination R(2) ≈ 0.02%), approximately 1 month of schooling per allele. A linear polygenic score from all measured SNPs accounts for ≈2% of the variance in both educational attainment and cognitive function. Genes in the region of the loci have previously been associated with health, cognitive, and central nervous system phenotypes, and bioinformatics analyses suggest the involvement of the anterior caudate nucleus. These findings provide promising candidate SNPs for follow-up work, and our effect size estimates can anchor power analyses in social-science genetics.

2015-16 Student Loan Repayment and Forgiveness Programs

Many loan repayment and incentive programs are available to encourage college students and graduates to enter into and continue to work in designated high-need careers. More and more Iowans are reaping the rewards of these federal, state and private programs that help reduce student loan debt while allowing them to pursue their career goals. Some programs make payments directly to the recipient’s student loan servicer to reduce the balance owed (loan repayment), while others may provide the option of an income stipend or bonus for eligible recipients who meet specified employment and other criteria. This guide provides information on many of the federal and state loan repayment and incentive programs currently available.
