Comparing simulation output accuracy of discrete event and agent based models: a quantitative approach

In our research we investigate the output accuracy of discrete event simulation models and agent based simulation models when studying human centric complex systems. In this paper we focus on human reactive behaviour as it is possible in both modelling approaches to implement human reactive behaviour in the model by using standard methods. As a case study we have chosen the retail sector, and here in particular the operations of the fitting room in the women wear department of a large UK department store. In our case study we looked at ways of determining the efficiency of implementing new management policies for the fitting room operation through modelling the reactive behaviour of staff and customers of the department. First, we have carried out a validation experiment in which we compared the results from our models to the performance of the real system. This experiment also allowed us to establish differences in output accuracy between the two modelling methods. In a second step a multi-scenario experiment was carried out to study the behaviour of the models when they are used for the purpose of operational improvement. Overall we have found that for our case study example both, discrete event simulation and agent based simulation have the same potential to support the investigation into the efficiency of implementing new management policies.

It was found that devices with an AlGaN barrier underwent an increase in the on-resistance, and a drain current and transconductance reduction without measurable threshold voltage change, suggesting the location of the traps in the gate-drain access region. In contrast, devices with an InAlN barrier showed a transconductance and a decrease in drain associated with a significant positive shift of threshold voltage, indicating that the traps were likely located under the gate region; as well as an on-resistance degradation probably associated with the presence of surface traps in the gate-drain access region. Furthermore, measurements of drain current transients at different ambient temperatures revealed that the activation energy of electron traps was 0.43 eV and 0.38 eV for AlGaN and InAlN barrier devices, respectively. Experimental and simulation results demonstrated the influence of device geometry on the observed trapping effects, since devices with larger gate lengths and gate-to-drain distance values exhibited less noticeable charge trapping effects.

Análisis bibliométrico del desarrollo científico de las ciencias sociales en México: 1997-2006.

En el presente trabajo se presentan los resultados de una investigación realizada sobre el Área de las Ciencias Sociales en México del período 1997-2006, para conocer algunas características relevantes como su evolución histórica y productividad científica (I+D) a través del volumen de documentos generados, el idioma de publicación, el índice de productividad cronológica, temática y por Entidad Federativa, los patrones de autoría y coautoría nacionales e internacionales, citación y co-citación entre publicaciones, instituciones y sub-disciplinas científicas (frentes de investigación), entre otros, utilizando para tal fin las técnica de investigación documental: análisis bibliométrico. La producción científica en Ciencias Sociales en el período estudiado representó el 8% del total de la producción mexicana, en Humanidades se logró el 1.50% y en Ciencias Aplicadas se alcanzó el 90.5%, de acuerdo a estimaciones realizadas a través de las bases de datos Citation Index del ISI. ABSTRACT During the period 1997-2006, to learn more about some important features concerning this country's historical development and scientific productivity (R & D) through the volume of documents generated, language of publication, the productivity index chronologically, thematically and by state, the patterns of authorship and national and international co-authorship, citation and co-citation between publications, institutions and sub-disciplines in science (research fronts), among other such indicators-- using the technique of documentary research: bibliometric analysis. For scientific production within the studied period, the field of Social Sciences represented 8% of the total of the Mexican production ; the field of Humanities represented 1,50% ; and the field of Applied Sciences represented 90,5% . These were results derived according to estimations made through the Citation Index data bases of the ISI.

The intellectual structure of research in hospitality management: A literature review using bibliometric methods of the journal International Journal of Hospitality Management

The purpose of this study is to analyze the existing literature on hospitality management from all the research papers published in The International Journal of Hospitality Management (IJHM) between 2008 and 2014. The authors apply bibliometric methods – in particular, author citation and co-citation analyses (ACA) – to identify the main research lines within this scientific field; in other words, its ‘intellectual structure’. Social network analysis (SNA) is also used to perform a visualization of this structure. The results of the analysis allow us to define the different research lines or fronts which shape the intellectual structure of research on hospitality management.

Publishing and impact criteria, and their bearing on Translation Studies: In search of comparability

This paper questions the current concept of quality as used in research assessment rankings and peer review, with special reference to the link often established between impact and the way this impact is measured in the form of citation counting. Taking translation studies as a case study, we will offer a two-level approach to reveal both the macro- and micro-level biases that exist in this regard. We will first review three key aspects related to the idea of the quality of publications, namely peer review, journal indexing, and journal impact factor. We will then pinpoint some of the main macro-level problems regarding current practices and criteria as applied to translation studies, such as Thomson Reuters World of Science's journal coverage, citation patterns, and publication format. Next we will provide a micro-textual and practical perspective, focusing on citation counts and suggesting a series of corrective measures to increase comparability.
