Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films have been deposited from silane using a novel photo-enhanced decomposition technique. The system comprises a hydrogen discharge lamp contained within the reaction vessel; this unified approach allows high energy photon excitation of the silane molecules without absorption by window materials or the need for mercury sensitisation. The film growth rates (exceeding 4 Angstrom/s) and material properties obtained are comparable to those of films produced by plasma-enhanced CVD techniques. The reduction of energetic charged particles in the film growth region should enable the fabrication of cleaner semiconductor/insulator interfaces in thin-film transistors.

A synaptic plane rendered by an array of smart pixels was described regarding its application as a complementary component for neural network implementation. The smart spatial light modulator featured auto-modification abilities. Thus, an optical system incorporating this device can show self-reliant optical learning. Furthermore, the optical system design, in the area of its optical interconnection scheme, is highly flexible since the independent weight-plane pixels eliminated the difficulty between weight update calculation and weight representation.

We have fabricated an ultra-compact 4×4 optical matrix on InP/InGaAsP material. 1×4 MMI couplers and TIR mirrors are employed to produce a compact 1×2 mm2 device. A CH4/H2/O2 RIE dry etch process has been used to realize two-level dry etching: deep-etch for both the MMI couplers and the mirrors and shallow-etch for the rest of the routing waveguides. It was found that a metal/dielectric bilayer mask is essential for multi-dry-etch processes and high profile verticality. We have found a Ti intermediate mask for the deep-etch process which is removable by SF6 dry-etch before the following shallow process. Dry-etch removal of the intermediate mask is necessary to protect the deep-etched mirror sidewall.

A ball-on-flat reciprocating micro-tribometer has been used to measure the friction coefficient between aluminium alloy strip and a steel ball. A relatively small ball and correspondingly low contact load is used to give a contact width of the order of 100μm, closer to asperity contact widths than generally found for this type of test. The effects of load, initial strip surface roughness, lubricants and boundary additives are investigated. It is found that the friction coefficient is significantly reduced by the addition of a lubricant. Observations of the wear tracks and ball surface show that the material transfer from aluminium to the ball is reduced in the presence of the lubricant. The initial friction coefficient is further reduced by the addition of a boundary additive, but the friction coefficient after 8 cycles is unchanged. An experiment was undertaken in which silver bellies (Leiognathus splendens) of different quality were used to produce silages using different concentrations of hydrochloric acid and formic acid. The quality and storage life of the various preparations are reported. Silages which keep for at least 30 days can be produced from silver belly held for 3 or 12 hours at 28°C by: 1) reducing the pH by addition of hydrochloric acid; 2) adding 0.5% formic acid and reducing the pH to 3.5 with hydrochloric acid; or 3) adding 2.5% formic acid.
Smart chemical sensor application of ZnO nanowires grown on CMOS compatible SOI microheater platform
Resumo:
Smart chemical sensor based on CMOS(complementary metal-oxide- semiconductor) compatible SOI(silicon on insulator) microheater platform was realized by facilitating ZnO nanowires growth on the small membrane at the relatively low temperature. Our SOI microheater platform can be operated at the very low power consumption with novel metal oxide sensing materials, like ZnO or SnO2 nanostructured materials which demand relatively high sensing temperature. In addition, our sol-gel growth method of ZnO nanowires on the SOI membrane was found to be very effective compared with ink-jetting or CVD growth techniques. These combined techniques give us the possibility of smart chemical sensor technology easily merged into the conventional semiconductor IC application. The physical properties of ZnO nanowire network grown by the solution-based method and its chemical sensing property also were reported in this paper.

Comprehensive understanding of the long-term performance of cement-bentonite slurry trench cut-off walls is essential as these mixes may degrade when exposed to aggressive environments or when subjected to prolonged drying. A series of wetting-drying and immersion experiments was carried out to evaluate the durability characteristics of laboratory mixed samples and block field samples from 40 days to 11 years of age. For the wetting-drying tests, the samples buried in medium graded sand were subjected to periodical flooding and drying cycles. They were then used for permeability testing and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. For the immersion tests, the samples confined in perforated molds were submerged in magnesium sulfate solution for 16 weeks and their microstructures were then analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. This paper identifies the effects of contaminant exposure on durability of cement-bentonite and the effects of aging by comparing 11 years old samples to younger samples. Test results showed that young or previously contaminated cement-bentonite mixes are more susceptible to sulfate attack than old or less contaminated mixes. Copyright ASCE 2008.

FEniCS is a collection of software tools for the automated solution of differential equations by finite element methods. In this note, we describe how FEniCS can be used to solve a simple nonlinear model problem with varying levels of automation. At one extreme, FEniCS provides tools for the fully automated and adaptive solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. At the other extreme, FEniCS provides a range of tools that allow the computational scientist to experiment with novel solution algorithms. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

The wastage of prawns due to spoilage in processing factories accounted to about 0-12% in 1974, 0-35% in 1975, 0-3% in 1976 and 0-4% in 1977. Spoilage increases with the time lag between catching and processing and also due to defective icing. The paper discusses the counts of whole prawns required for obtaining meat of specified size grades.

The shrimp processing plants located at any particular place receive their raw material supplies from local and outside centres. The raw material received, the form in which it was received, the relative contribution by local and outside centres and the seasonal variation in the supplies were studied with respect to the shrimp processing plants located at three places - Cochin, Veraval and Kakinada.
