Nowadays, we return to live a period of lunar exploration. China, Japan and India heavily invest in missions to the moon, and then try to implement manned bases on this satellite. These bases must be installed in polar regions due to the apparent existence of water. Therefore, the study of the feasibility of satellite constellations for navigation, control and communication recovers importance. The Moon's gravitational potential and resonant movements due to the proximity to Earth as the Kozai-Lidov resonance, must be considered in addition to other perturbations of lesser magnitude. The usual satellite constellations provide, as a basic feature, continuous and global coverage of the Earth. With this goal, they are designed for the smallest number of objects possible to perform a specific task and this amount is directly related to the altitude of the orbits and visual abilities of the members of the constellation. However the problem is different when the area to be covered is reduced to a given zone. The required number of space objects can be reduced. Furthermore, depending on the mission requirements it may be not necessary to provide continuous coverage. Taking into account the possibility of setting up a constellation that covers a specific region of the Moon on a non-continuous base, in this study we seek a criterion of optimization related to the time between visits. The propagation of the orbits of objects in the constellation in conjunction with the coverage constraints, provide information on the periods of time in which points of the surface are covered by a satellite, and time intervals in which they are not. So we minimize the time between visits considering several sets of possible constellations and using genetic algorithms.

The ABE (acetone, butanol, ethanol) fermentation is characterized by its low productivity. In this paper, this issue is overcome with an innovative industrial process that employs the flash fermentation technology. The process consists of three interconnected units, as follows: fermentor, cell retention system (tangential microfiltration) and vacuum flash vessel (responsible for the continuous recovery of butanol from the broth). The dynamic behaviour of the process is described by a nonlinear mathematical model with kinetic parameters determined experimentally. From simulations of the mathematical model the dynamic characteristics of the process were investigated. Analyzes of the open-loop dynamic behavior of the process, after step perturbations in the manipulated variables, determined the best control structures for the process. We present a non-linear symplectic map that describes the alterations of the magnetic field lines inside the tokamak plasma due to the presence of a robust torus (RT) at the plasma edge. This RT prevents the magnetic field lines from reaching the tokamak wall and reduces, in its vicinity, the islands and invariant curve destruction due to resonant perturbations. The map describes the equilibrium magnetic field lines perturbed by resonances created by ergodic magnetic limiters (EMLs). We present the results obtained for twist and non-twist mappings derived for monotonic and non-monotonic plasma current density radial profiles, respectively. Our results indicate that the RT implementation would decrease the field line transport at the tokamak plasma edge. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present work we use an asymptotic approach to obtain the long wave equations. The shallow water equation is put as a function of an external parameter that is a measure of both the spatial scales anisotropy and the fast to slow time ratio. The values given to the external parameters are consistent with those computed using typical values of the perturbations in tropical dynamics. Asymptotically, the model converge toward the long wave model. Thus, it is possible to go toward the long wave approximation through intermediate realizable states. With this approach, the resonant nonlinear wave interactions are studied. To simplify, the reduced dynamics of a single resonant triad is used for some selected equatorial trios. It was verified by both theoretical and numerical results that the nonlinear energy exchange period increases smoothly as we move toward the long wave approach. The magnitude of the energy exchanges is also modified, but in this case depends on the particular triad used and also on the initial energy partition among the triad components. Some implications of the results for the tropical dynamics are disccussed. In particular, we discuss the implications of the results for El Nĩo and the Madden-Julian in connection with other scales of time and spatial variability. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The upcoming solar maximum, which is expected to reach its peak around May 2013, occurs at a time when our reliance on high-precision GNSS has reached unprecedented proportions. The perturbations of the ionosphere caused by increased solar activity pose a major threat to these applications. This is particularly true in equatorial regions where high exposure to solar-induced disturbances is coupled with explosive growth of precise GNSS applications. Along with the various types of solar-induced ionospheric disturbances, strong scintillations are amongst the most challenging, causing phase measurement errors up to full losses of lock for several satellites. Brazil, which heavily relies on high-precision GNSS, is one of the most affected regions due notably to the proximity to the southern crest of the ionospheric equatorial anomaly and to the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly. In the framework of the CIGALA project, we developed the PolaRxS™, a GNSS receiver dedicated to the monitoring of ionospheric scintillation indices not only in the GPS L1 band but for all operational and upcoming constellations and frequency bands. A network of these receivers was deployed across the whole Brazilian territory in order to first investigate and secondly to mitigate the impact of scintillation on the different signals, ensuring high precision GNSS availability and integrity in the area. This paper reports on the validation of the PolaRxS™ receiver as an ionospheric scintillation monitor and the first results of the analysis of the data collected with the CIGALA network.

It was verified that the asteroid Magnya has some physical and chemical characteristics similar to the bodies from Vesta family. However, astronomical observations revealed that Magnya is distant from these bodies. In the present work, we assumed that Magnya originated from Vesta and we try to justify its current distant orbital location taking into account the effects of close encounters between Magnya and Vesta. The methodology adopted involved an analytical approach considering the technique of the gravity assisted maneuver, also known as swing-by. We found that the energy variation achieved through a single swing-by between Vesta and Magnya are very small when compared to the variation that would be required to change the orbit of Magnya. The effects of multiple close encounters were also considered and discussed. We concluded that the possibility of multiple encounters is limited, and therefore, that Magnya should suffer other perturbations (such as resonances, collisions or close encounters with other bodies, for instance) that would provide the supposed change in its orbit.

We study the effect of shear and rotation on results previously obtained dealing with the application of the spherical collapse model (SCM) to generalized Chaplygin gas (gCg)-dominated universes. The system is composed of baryons and gCg and the collapse is studied for different values of the parameter α of the gCg. We show that the joint effect of shear and rotation is that of slowing down the collapse with respect to the simple SCM. This result is of utmost importance for the so-called unified dark matter models, since the described slowdown in the growth of density perturbations can solve one of the main problems of the quoted models, namely the instability described in previous papers [e.g., H. B. Sandvik, Phys. Rev. D 69, 123524 (2004)] at the linear perturbation level. © 2013 American Physical Society.

This paper is concerned with closed orbits of non-smooth vector fields on the plane. For a class of non-smooth vector fields we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of closed poly-trajectorie. By means of a regularization process we prove that hyperbolic closed poly-trajectories are limit sets of a sequence of limit cycles of smooth vector fields. In our approach the Poincaré Index for non-smooth vector fields is introduced. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

We consider parameter dependent semilinear evolution problems for which, at the limit value of the parameter, the problem is finite dimensional. We introduce an abstract functional analytic framework that applies to many problems in the existing literature for which the study of asymptotic dynamics can be reduced to finite dimensions via the invariant manifolds technique. Some practical models are considered to show wide applicability of the theory. © 2013 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
