To gain insight in the relationship between innate immune system and metabolic disease, we aimed to investigate the effects of lactoferrin in obesity-related metabolic disturbances. Circulating lactoferrin concentration was significantly decreased in subjects with altered glucose tolerance (AGT) and associated negatively with obesity-related metabolic disturbances. The SNPs-induced aminoacidic changes in lactoferrin N-terminus region were associated with a low atherogenic lipid profile. Lactoferrin production in neutrophils decreased significatively in aging, chronic low-grade inflammation and type 2 diabetes. In vitro, lactoferrin increased insulin signaling pathway, even under insulin resistance conditions and displayed dual effects on adipogenesis (antiadipogenic in 3T3-L1 and adipogenic in human adipocytes). In conclusion, lactoferrin might play a potential protective role against insulin resistance and obesity related metabolic disturbances.

This paper identifies risk factors associated with hearing loss in newborns, including family history, craniofacial abnormalities, and ototoxic medications.

This paper discusses the use of tympanometric gradient, middle ear resonance and static admittance as diagnostic tools for testing the hearing of children and infants.

This paper discusses hearing tests of infants in a NICU.

The purpose of this study was to assess the use of 1 kHz tympanometry in young infants. A larger sample will be needed to develop definitive norms and determine the sensitivity and specificity of 1 kHz tympanometry for middle ear pathology in young infants.

This paper is a study of the effectiveness between video and toy reinforcer types to motivate infants/toddlers for hearing tests. No significant differences were found between age groups or gender. Toy reinforcers were found to produce on average two more threshold estimates compared to video reinforcers. Variety, color and animation of animals may have contributed to this difference.

This paper investigates parental response to the results of screening programs mandated by Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UHHS), a Missouri law requiring hearing screenings of all newborns that went into effect January 1, 2002.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a hearing screening program, particularly focusing on hit and false positive rates in the NICU and WBN at a top-rated birthing hospital in Saint Louis, MO. Additionally, the study examined how these rates may be influenced by risk factors for hearing loss.

Interpretation of 1000 Hz tympanometry is not standardized. Several compensated and uncompensated measures were analyzed and compared to otologic findings. Results of auditory brainstem testing and otoacoustic emissions were considered to better obtain middle ear status. Findings were inconclusive due to small sample size.

This paper discusses a study to test two methods of hearing screening for infants--visual reinforcement audiometry and auditory brainstem responses.
Auditory brainstem response with alternative transducers: implications for newborn hearing screening
