In this paper, preliminary experimental results are presented on pressure drop characteristics of single and two-phase flows through two T-type rectangular microchannel mixers with hydraulic diameters of 528 and 333 mum, respectively. It is shown that both N-2 and water single-phase laminar flows in microchannels, with consideration of experimental uncertainties, are consistent with classic theory, if additional effects, such as entrance effects that will interfere with the interpretation of experimental results, are eliminated by carefully designing the experiments. The obtained pressure drop data of N-2-water two-phase flow in micromixers are analyzed and compared with existing flow pattern-independent models. It is found that the Lockhart-Martinelli method generally underpredicts the frictional pressure drop. Thereafter, a modified correlation of C value in the Chisholm's equation based on linear regression of experimental data is proposed to provide a better prediction of the two-phase frictional pressure drop. Also among the homogeneous flow models investigated, the viscosity correlation of McAdams indicates the best performance in correlating the frictional pressure drop data (mean deviations within +/-20% for two micromixers both). Finally it is suggested that systematic studies are still required to accurately predict two-phase frictional performance in microchannels. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A simple method was developed for injecting a sample on a cross-form microfluidic chip by means of hydrostatic pressure combined with electrokinetic forces. The hydrostatic pressure was generated simply by adjusting the liquid level in different reservoirs without any additional driven equipment such as a pump. Two dispensing strategies using a floating injection and a gated injection, coupled with hydrostatic pressure loading, were tested. The fluorescence observation verified the feasibility of hydrostatic pressure loading in the separation of a mixture of fluorescein sodium salt and fluorescein isothiocyanate. This method was proved to be effective in leading cells to a separation channel for single cell analysis.

The applicability of on-line coupling of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography to atmospheric pressure ionization tandem mass spectrometry for the separation and characterization of hop acids mixture from the crude extract of Humulus lupulus was investigated. The solvent system consisting of acetonitrile-aqueous formic acid was used to give proper separation of the six main hop bitter acids within 30 min. Further structural information about the components was acquired by collision-induced dissociation (CID). On the basis of analyses of the fragmentation patterns of the major alpha- and beta-bitter acids respectively, identification of the minor ones was performed using selected reaction monitoring (SRM) with a group of qualitatively relevant selected precursor-product ion transitions for each bitter acid in a single high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) run. Using this technique, six minor hop acids, including "adprelupulone" observed for the first time in natural resources, were detected along with the six major acids. This hyphenated techniques provides potency for rapid qualitative determination of analogs and homologs in mixtures. (C) 2004 American Society for Mass Spectrometry.

An on-line sample introduction technique in capillary gas chromatograph (CGC) for the analysis of high-pressure gas-liquid mixtures has been designed and evaluated. A sample loop of 0.05 muL and a washing solvent loop of 0.5 muL are mounted on a 10-port switching valve, which serves as the injection valve. A capillary resistor was connected to the vent of sample loop in order to maintain the pressure of the sample. Both the sample and the washing solvent are transferred into the split-injection port through a narrow bore fused silica capillary inserted into the injection liner through a septum. The volume of the liner is used both as the pressure-release damper and evaporation chamber of the sample. On-line analysis of both reactants and resultants in ethylene olimer reaction mixture at 5 MPa was carried out, which demonstrated the applicability of the technique. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The hydrodehalogenation of aromatic halides, catalyzed by Pd/C in aqueous solutions, yields arenes in short reaction times at room temperature under normal pressure. The nature of the solvents has an important influence on the reaction rates and the activity of the catalyst. The catalyst shows the highest activity in water. In the hydrodechlorination of 4-chlorohypnone, it was in water that C-Cl bond was easier to be hydrogenated, and in isopropanol that C=O was easier to be hydrogenated. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Pure (W0.4Al0.6)C powder of about 1 mu m in diameter was sintered by the high pressure sintering (HPS) process without the addition of any binder phase. The microstructure, Vickers micro hardness and density versus the sintering time and temperature are well described. The most suitable sintering condition under pressure of 4.5 GPa is 1873 K for 8 min. Under this sintering condition, the hardness can reach 2295 kg mm(-2) and the relative density can reach 98.6%.

Lanthanum magnesium hexaaluminate is a very important ceramic material for high temperature applications. In this paper lanthanum magnesium hexaaluminate has been synthesized directly by solid-state reaction. The forming mechanism was investigated by XRD. The SEM photographs show that the prepared powders are made of hexagonal plates. These powders can be well sintered at the high temperature (1600 degrees C) under the high pressure (4.5 GPa), and the relative density reaches 94.8%.

Fast densification of 8YSZ ceramics under a high pressure of 4.5 GPa was carried out at different temperatures (800, 1000, 1450 degrees C), by which a high relative density above 92% could be obtained. FT-Raman spectra indicate that the 8YSZ underwent a phase transition from partially tetragonal to partially cubic phase as temperatures increase from 1000 to 1450 degrees C when sintering under high pressure. The electrical properties of the samples under different high-pressure sintering conditions were measured by complex impedance method. The total conductivity of 0.92 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 800 degrees C has been obtained for 8YSZ under high pressure at 1450 degrees C, which is about 200 degrees C lower than that of the samples prepared by conventional pressureless sintering.

The Heck reaction of iodobenzene and methyl acrylate was investigated with CO2-philic Pd complex catalysts having fluorous ponytails and the organic base triethylamine (Et3N) in the presence of CO2 under solventless conditions at 80 degrees C. The catalysts are not soluble in the organic phase in the absence Of CO2 and the reaction occurs in a solid-liquid biphasic system. When the organic liquid mixture is pressurized by CO2, CO2 is dissolved into the organic phase and this promotes the dissolution of the I'd complex catalysts. As a result, the Heck reaction occurs homogeneously in the organic phase, which enhances the rate of reaction. This positive effect Of CO2 pressurization competes with the negative effect that the reacting species are diluted by an increasing amount of CO2 molecules dissolved. Thus, the maximum conversion appears at a CO2 pressure of around 4 MPa under the present reaction conditions. The catalysts are separated in the solid granules by depressurization and are recyclable without loss of activity after washing with n-hexane and/or water.

Ultrahigh pressure technique was employed to extract ginsenosides from roots of ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer). The optimal conditions for ultrahigh pressure extraction (UPE) of total ginsenosides were quantified by UV-vis spectrophotometry with the ginsenoside Re as standard, the signal ginsenosides were quantified by HPLC and ELSD with ginsenosides Re, Rg(1), Rb-1, Rc and Rb-2 as standards. Orthogonal design was applied to evaluate the effects of four independent factors (extraction pressure, extraction temperature, extraction time and ethanol concentration) on the yield and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of ginsenoside, which are based on microwave extraction (ME), ultrasound extraction (UE), soxhlet extraction (SE) and heat reflux extraction (HRE) method. The results showed that UPE method can produce ginsenoside with the highest yield and the best radical scavenging activity compared to other used ones. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of the plant cells after ultrahigh pressure treatment was obtained to provide visual evidence of the disruption effect.
