Minimising transport disadvantage to support knowledge city formation : applying the capability approach to select indicators

Purpose–The aims of this paper are to demonstrate the application of Sen’s theory of well-being, the capability approach; to conceptualise the state of transportation disadvantage; and to underpin a theoretical sounds indicator selection process. Design/methodology/approach–This paper reviews and examines various measurement approaches of transportation disadvantage in order to select indicators and develop an innovative framework of urban transportation disadvantage. Originality/value–The paper provides further understanding of the state of transportation disadvantage from the capability approach perspective. In addition, building from this understanding, a validated and systematic framework is developed to select relevant indicators. Practical implications –The multi-indicator approach has a high tendency to double count for transportation disadvantage, increase the number of TDA population and only accounts each indicator for its individual effects. Instead, indicators that are identified based on a transportation disadvantage scenario will yield more accurate results. Innovation in clinical learning for the acute hospital environment : nursing grand rounds

The literature reports that workload factors affect nurses' ability to fully engage in continuing professional development. Hence the work environment in acute care calls for innovative approaches to achieve continuous development of nursing practice and work satisfaction. This study employs a one group pre-test post-test design to test the effectiveness of nursing grand rounds on nursing worklife satisfaction and work environment in an acute surgical ward. The effect of nursing grand rounds was measured using the Nursing Worklife Satisfaction Scale and the Practice Environment Scale. There was no change between pre- and post-test on these measures but trends were evident in some component scores. Statistical results were inconclusive but observational data indicated that nursing grand rounds was found to be feasible, well attended with tested processes for implementation in an acute care environment.

iPed : pedagogy for digital text production

Reading and writing are being transformed by global changes in communication practices using new media technologies. This paper introduces iPed, a research-based pedagogy that enables teachers to navigate innovative digital text production in the literacy classroom. The pedagogy was generated in the context of a longitudinal digital literacy intervention in a school that services low-socioeconomic and ethnically diverse students. iPed synthesizes four key pedagogies that were salient in the analysis of over 180 hours of lesson observations – Link, Challenge, Co-Create, and Share. The strengths of the pedagogy include connecting to students’ home cultures, critical media literacy, collaborative and creative digital text production, and gaining cosmopolitan recognition within global communities.
