Temperature Dependence of the Intergranular Critical Current Density in Uniaxially Pressed Bi(1.65)Pb(0.35)Sr(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(10+delta) Samples

We have studied the normal and superconducting transport properties of Bi(1.65)Pb(0.35)Sr(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(10+delta) (Bi-2223) ceramic samples. Four samples, from the same batch, were prepared by the solid-state reaction method and pressed uniaxially at different compacting pressures, ranging from 90 to 250 MPa before the last heat treatment. From the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, combined with current conduction models for cuprates, we were able to separate contributions arising from both the grain misalignment and microstructural defects. The behavior of the critical current density as a function of temperature at zero applied magnetic field, J (c) (T), was fitted to the relationship J (c) (T)ae(1-T/T (c) ) (n) , with na parts per thousand 2 in all samples. We have also investigated the behavior of the product J (c) rho (sr) , where rho (sr) is the specific resistance of the grain-boundary. The results were interpreted by considering the relation between these parameters and the grain-boundary angle, theta, with increasing the uniaxial compacting pressure. We have found that the above type of mechanical deformation improves the alignment of the grains. Consequently the samples exhibit an enhance in the intergranular properties, resulting in a decrease of the specific resistance of the grain-boundary and an increase in the critical current density.

Risk factors for recurrent Mycobacterium ulcerans disease after exclusive surgical treatment in an Australian cohort

Objective: To describe risk factors for recurrence after exclusive surgical treatment of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection. Design, setting and participants: Prospective observational cohort study of all M. ulcerans cases managed with surgery alone at Barwon Health, a tertiary referral hospital, from 1 January 1998 to 31 December 2011. A random-effects Poisson regression model was used to assess rates and associations of treatment failure. Main outcome measures: Rates of treatment failure and rate ratios (RRs) for factors associated with treatment failure. Results: Of 192 patients with M. ulcerans infection, 50 (26%) had exclusive surgical treatment. Median age was 65.0 years (interquartile range [IQR], 45.5-77.7 years), and median duration of symptoms was 46 days (IQR, 26-90 days). There were 20 recurrences in 16 patients. For first lesions, the recurrence incidence rate was 41.8 (95% CI, 25.6-68.2) per 100 person-years, and median time to recurrence was 50 days (IQR, 30-171 days). Recurrence occurred &le; 3 cm from the original lesion in 13 cases, and >3 cm in nine. On univariable analysis, age ≥60 years (RR 13.84; 95% CI, 2.21-86.68; P< 0.01), distal lesions (RR, 20.43; 95% CI, 1.97-212.22; P<0.01), positive histological margins (RR, 21.02; 95% CI, 5.51-80.26; P< 0.001), immunosuppression (RR, 17.97; 95% CI, 4.17-77.47; P <0.01) and duration of symptoms >75 days (RR, 10.13; 95% CI, 1.76-58.23; P =0.02) were associated with treatment failure. On multivariable analysis, positive margins (RR, 7.72; 95% CI, 2.71-22.01; P<0.001) and immunosuppression (RR, 6.45; 95% CI, 2.42-17.20; P =0.01) remained associated with treatment failure. Conclusions: Recurrence rates after exclusive surgical treatment of M. ulcerans disease in an Australian cohort are high, with increased rates associated with immunosuppression or positive histological margins.

O processo de humanização: as bases constitutivas da subjetividade

Iniciando-se por uma descrição longitudinal, seguida de interpretação "a posteriori", obteve-se categorias relativas a cada dimensão do psiquismo. Estas, em seu caráter de transversalidade, foram tomadas como esteios para as explicações acerca da passagem do sujeito da condição biológica à condição de sujeito falante. O norteamento dessa análise teve como ponto de partida a postulação acerca dessas dimensões, dos aspectos relativos as mesmas, e dos efetores referentes por essa passagem, cujo início tem a esses aspectos que respondem lugar quando a mãe se dispõe a apontar para o sujeito o limite entre o núcleo filogenético e as transformações sócio-histórica. A partir dessa delimitação, ocorre a assimilação de características, tipicamente humanas para, enfim, serem fixados pela lei paterna, os limites do “tornar-se humano”. Nesse ínterim, são observadas ocorrências relativas as dimensões mencionadas. Tratando-se de permanência de conteúdos mantidos fora do campo da simbolização, e excluídos da matriz imaginária, tem-se então a caracterização do real ~elo seu mecanismo específico: a foraclusão. Ainda se situa a pulsão no seu caráter impensável e inominável. Já as ações resultantes do recalcamento originário concorrem para a formação de marcas não-simbolizáveis que, como faceta do imaginário, se vinculam às informações do núcleo filogenético referentes aos protofantasmas, aqui considerado corno outra faceta desta dimensão. No que concerne ao simbólico, registra-se a significação como fundante da condição humana, resultante do recalcamento propriamente dito. Sendo assim, a humanização enquanto explicada pelo conceito de recalcamento, conforme evidencia a metapsicologia freudiana, não açambarça todas as nuances relativas ao humano; visto englobar apenas aquilo que é imaginado corno fantasma ou aquilo que e apresentado simbolicamente. Por isso, a utilização do conceito de foraclusão, da perspectiva lacaniana, justifica-se pelo fato de oferecer uma visão mais completa dessa dinâmica. Desse modo, se pode incluir no escopo do "tornar-se humano", aqueles elementos não passíveis de simbolização, bem como aqueles da realidade pulsional que não se apresentam no texto do fantasma; mas que, ao se constituírem como um "pano-de-fundo", possibilitam que a conteúdos simbólicos e imaginários viabilizem a socialização. De resto, a socialização é um processo que, originado do simbólico, se assenta no imaginário tomado como base. Para isto, o real, em seu efeito marginal, possibilita o retorno ao simbólico. A partir daí, se verifica a utilização dos elementos culturais, que são descobertos em função daquilo que a atividade fantasmática suscita.

Efeitos da administração subaracnóidea de grandes volumes de lidocaína a 2% e ropivacaína a 1% sobre a medula espinhal e as meninges: estudo experimental em cães

JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: A injeção de grandes volumes de anestésico local no espaço subaracnóideo, após punção dural acidental, é complicação da anestesia peridural. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar as possíveis alterações clínicas e histológicas desencadeadas por grandes volumes de lidocaína a 2% e ropivacaína a 1%, simulando injeção subaracnóidea acidental, em cães. MÉTODO: Vinte e um cães foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em 3 grupos, que receberam por via subaracnóidea: G1 - cloreto de sódio a 0,9%; G2 - lidocaína a 2% e G3 - ropivacaína a 1%. A punção subaracnóidea foi realizada no espaço intervertebral L6-L7. O volume de anestésico local administrado foi de 1 ml para cada 10 cm de distância entre a protuberância occipital e o espaço lombossacral (5 - 6,6 ml). Após 72 horas de observação clínica os animais foram sacrificados e foi removida a porção lombossacral da medula para exame histológico, por microscopia óptica. RESULTADOS: Nenhum animal do G1 apresentou alterações clínicas ou histológicas da medula espinhal. Foram observados dois casos de necrose do tecido nervoso em G2, porém mudanças clínicas, em somente um desses cães e em outros dois animais que não apresentaram alterações histológicas. Foi encontrada necrose focal do tecido nervoso medular em um animal de G3. Todos os animais de G3 permaneceram clinicamente normais. CONCLUSÕES: Conclui-se que grandes volumes de lidocaína a 2% determinaram alterações clínicas e histológicas mais intensas que os de ropivacaína a 1%.

Search for neutral, long-lived particles decaying into two muons in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

We present a search for a neutral particle, pair produced in pp collisions at root s=1.96 TeV, which decays into two muons and lives long enough to travel at least 5 cm before decaying. The analysis uses approximate to 380 pb(-1) of data recorded with the D0 detector. The background is estimated to be about one event. No candidates are observed, and limits are set on the pair-production cross section times branching fraction into dimuons + X for such particles. For a mass of 10 GeV and lifetime of 4x10(-11) s, we exclude values greater than 0.14 pb (95% C.L.). These results are used to limit the interpretation of NuTeV's excess of dimuon events.

This thesis work aims to bring a better viewing on an atypical case of financial analysis. The lstituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR), commonly known as the Vatican Bank, has peculiarities according to its goals as a bank. Belonging to a Catholic religious congregation, IOR has been used to manage the resources of the church, and ensure that these resources are used for the operation of it and, also for religious works. However the financial transactions made by the bank remained secret throughout its existence until mid 2012. This feature of not providing relevant information at the local and international community brought harm. Several cases of corruption and money laundering came up, bringing scandals that cause bad looks for the religious entity. In order to interact with the international community and understanding the importance of it, the Roman Apostolic Catholic Church decides to joing the international accounting procedures (IFRS) and went on to provide yearly financial statement reports and other information from its bank from 2012 . Thus, this thesis work takes on the role of analyzing the financial statements of the IOR and present its economic and financial health from the Capital Structure ratios, liquidity and profitability in the period 2012-2014. Overall, there has been a significant reduction in indebtedness 548% in 2012 to 362% in 2014. However, such an index showing is still high. In addition, the debt profile remained bad (87.47% short-term in 2014). The Liquidity ratios, both indices fell during the analysed period. Noteworthy is that even with retractions, the indices are equal or greater than 1, which indicates financial footing able to pay off debts. Regarding profitability, in 2013 it represented atypical moment, considering the economic performance of the IOR in the investigated period.
