This paper outlines a multiprofessional education workshop piloted and subsequently conducted with a cohort of 81 graduate entry students of occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology and audiology. The rationale for, and format of, the workshop is outlined, followed by comparisons between students' knowledge about teamwork prior to and after the four-hour workshop. The workshop was based on a real case scenario of a child with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Students completed pre- and post-workshop questionnaires about their knowledge of DCD, teamwork and the roles of various professionals and parents; and a post-workshop questionnaire about their views regarding the utility of the workshop, its strengths, and learning outcomes. The evaluation indicated that the workshop was overwhelmingly successful from the students' perspective in: (1) enhancing their understanding about DCD and its multifaceted impact on school age children; (2) developing a deeper appreciation of the importance of teamwork itself; (3) refining their understanding of their own profession's role and (4) developing an appreciation of the role of other professions and parents in working with children with complex needs, and their families. Limitations of this study and directions for future research are discussed.

The search for orally effective drugs for the treatment of iron overload disorders is an important goal in improving the health of patients suffering diseases such as beta-thalassemia major. Herein, we report the syntheses and characterization of some new members of a series of N-aroyl-N'-picolinoyl hydrazine chelators (the H2IPH analogs). Both 1:1 and 1:2 Fe-III:L complexes were isolated and the crystal structures of Fe(HPPH)Cl-2, Fe(4BBPH)Cl-2, Fe(HAPH)(APH) and Fe(H3BBPH)(3BBPH) were determined (H2PPH=N,N'-bis-picolinoyl hydrazine; H(2)APH=N-4-aminobenzoyl-N'-picolinoyl hydrazine, H(2)3BBPH=N-3-bromobenzoyl-N'-picolinoylhydrazine and H(2)4BBPH=N-(4-bromobenzoyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)hydrazine). In each case, a tridentate N,N,O coordination mode of each chelator with Fe was observed. The Fe-III complexes of these ligands have been synthesized and their structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization are reported. Five of these new chelators, namely H2BPH (N-(benzoyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)hydrazine), H2TPH (N-(2-thienyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)-hydrazine), H2PPH, H(2)3BBPH and H(2)4BBPH, showed high efficacy at mobilizing Fe-59 from cells and inhibiting Fe-59 uptake from the serum Fe transport protein, transferrin (Tf). Indeed, their activity was much greater than that found for the chelator in current clinical use, desferrioxamine (DFO), and similar to that observed for the orally active chelator, pyridoxal isonicotinoyl hydrazone (H2PIH). The ability of the chelators to inhibit Fe-59 uptake could not be accounted for by direct chelation of Fe-59-Tf. The most effective chelators also showed low antiproliferative activity which was similar to or less than that observed with DFO, which is important in terms of their potential use as agents to treat Fe-overload disease.

A novel member of the human relaxin subclass of the insulin superfamily was recently discovered during a genomics database search and named relaxin-3. Like human relaxin-1 and relaxin-2, relaxin-3 is predicted to consist of a two-chain structure and three disulfide bonds in a disposition identical to that of insulin. To undertake detailed biophysical and biological characterization of the peptide, its chemical synthesis was undertaken. In contrast to human relaxin-1 and relaxin-2, however, relaxin-3 could not be successfully prepared by simple combination of the individual chains, thus necessitating recourse to the use of a regioselective disulfide bond formation strategy. Solid phase synthesis of the separate, selectively S-protected A and B chains followed by their purification and the subsequent stepwise formation of each of the three disulfides led to the successful acquisition of human relaxin-3. Comprehensive chemical characterization confirmed both the correct chain orientation and the integrity of the synthetic product. Relaxin-3 was found to bind to and activate native relaxin receptors in vitro and stimulate water drinking through central relaxin receptors in vivo. Recent studies have demonstrated that relaxin-3 will bind to and activate human LGR7, but not LGR8, in vitro. Secondary structural analysis showed it to adopt a less ordered confirmation than either relaxin-1 or relaxin-2, reflecting the presence in the former of a greater percentage of nonhelical forming amino acids. NMR spectroscopy and simulated annealing calculations were used to determine the three-dimensional structure of relaxin-3 and to identify key structural differences between the human relaxins.

Ocean acidification represents a key threat to coral reefs by reducing the calcification rate of framework builders. In addition, acidification is likely to affect the relationship between corals and their symbiotic dinoflagellates and the productivity of this association. However, little is known about how acidification impacts on the physiology of reef builders and how acidification interacts with warming. Here, we report on an 8-week study that compared bleaching, productivity, and calcification responses of crustose coralline algae (CCA) and branching (Acropora) and massive (Porites) coral species in response to acidification and warming. Using a 30-tank experimental system, we manipulated CO2 levels to simulate doubling and three- to fourfold increases [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projection categories IV and VI] relative to present-day levels under cool and warm scenarios. Results indicated that high CO2 is a bleaching agent for corals and CCA under high irradiance, acting synergistically with warming to lower thermal bleaching thresholds. We propose that CO2 induces bleaching via its impact on photoprotective mechanisms of the photosystems. Overall, acidification impacted more strongly on bleaching and productivity than on calcification. Interestingly, the intermediate, warm CO2 scenario led to a 30% increase in productivity in Acropora, whereas high CO2 lead to zero productivity in both corals. CCA were most sensitive to acidification, with high CO2 leading to negative productivity and high rates of net dissolution. Our findings suggest that sensitive reef-building species such as CCA may be pushed beyond their thresholds for growth and survival within the next few decades whereas corals will show delayed and mixed responses.

The sediment temperature distribution at mud volcanoes provides insights into their activity and into the occurrence of gas hydrates. If ambient pressure and temperature conditions are close to the limits of the gas hydrate stability field, the sediment temperature distribution not only limits the occurrence of gas hydrates, but is itself influenced by heat production and consumption related to the formation and dissociation of gas hydrates. Located in the Sorokin Trough in the northern Black Sea, the Dvurechenskii mud volcano (DMV) was in the focus of detailed investigations during the M72/2 and M73/3a cruises of the German R/V Meteor and the ROV Quest 4000 m in February and March 2007. A large number of in-situ sediment temperature measurements were conducted from the ROV and with a sensor-equipped gravity corer. Gas hydrates were sampled in pressurized cores using a dynamic autoclave piston corer (DAPC). The thermal structure of the DMV suggests a regime of fluid flow at rates decreasing from the summit towards the edges of the mud volcano, accompanied by intermittent mud expulsion at the summit. Modeled gas hydrate dissociation temperatures reveal that the gas hydrates at the DMV are very close to the stability limits. Changes in heat flow due to variable seepage rates probably do not result in changes in sediment temperature but are compensated by gas hydrate dissociation and formation.

The persistence of most coastal marine species depends on larvae finding suitable adult habitat at the end of an offshore dispersive stage that can last weeks or months. We tested the effects that ocean acidification from elevated levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) could have on the ability of larvae to detect olfactory cues from adult habitats. Larval clownfish reared in control seawater (pH 8.15) discriminated between a range of cues that could help them locate reef habitat and suitable settlement sites. This discriminatory ability was disrupted when larvae were reared in conditions simulating CO2-induced ocean acidification. Larvae became strongly attracted to olfactory stimuli they normally avoided when reared at levels of ocean pH that could occur ca. 2100 (pH 7.8) and they no longer responded to any olfactory cues when reared at pH levels (pH 7.6) that might be attained later next century on a business-as-usual carbon-dioxide emissions trajectory. If acidification continues unabated, the impairment of sensory ability will reduce population sustainability of many marine species, with potentially profound consequences for marine diversity.

Biogenic calcification is influenced by the concentration of available carbonate ions. The recent confirmation of this for hermatypic corals has raised concern over the future of coral reefs because [CO3] is a decreasing function of increasing pCO2 in the atmosphere. As one of the overriding features of coral reefs is their diversity, understanding the degree of variability between species in their ability to cope with a change in [CO3] is a priority. We cultured four phylogenetically and physiologically different species of hermatypic coral (Acropora verweyi, Galaxea fascicularis, Pavona cactus and Turbinaria reniformis) under 'normal' (280 µmol/kg) and 'low' (140 µmol/kg) carbonate-ion concentrations. The effect on skeletogenesis was investigated quantitatively (by calcification rate) and qualitatively (by microstructural appearance of growing crystalline fibres using scanning electron microscopy (SEM)). The 'low carbonate' treatment resulted in a significant suppression of calcification rate and a tendency for weaker crystallization at the distal tips of fibres. However, while the calcification rate was affected uniformly across species (13-18% reduction), the magnitude of the microstructural response was highly species specific: crystallization was most markedly affected in A. verweyi and least in T. reniformis. These results are discussed in relation to past records and future predictions of carbonate variability in the oceans.

Carbon dioxide and oxygen fluxes were measured in 0.2 m2 enclosures placed at the water sediment interface in the SW lagoon of New Caledonia. Experiments, performed at several stations in a wide range of environments, were carried out both in darkness to estimate respiration and at ambient light, to assess the effects of primary production. The community respiratory quotient (CRQ = CO2 production rate/02 consumption rate) and the community photosynthetic quotient (CPQ= gross O2 production rate/gross CO2 consumption rate) were calculated by functional regressions. The CRQ value, calculated from 61 incubations, was 1.14 (S.E. 0.05) and the CPQ value, obtained from 18 incubations, was 1.03 (S.E. 0.08). The linearity of the relationship between the O2 and the CO2 fluxes suggests that these values are representative for the whole lagoon
