We present the results of searches for dipolar-type anisotropies in different energy ranges above 2.5 x 10(17) eV with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, reporting on both the phase and the amplitude measurements of the first harmonic modulation in the right-ascension distribution. Upper limits on the amplitudes are obtained, which provide the most stringent bounds at present, being below 2% at 99% C.L. for EeV energies. We also compare our results to those of previous experiments as well as with some theoretical expectations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It consists of a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level and a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The ""hybrid"" detection mode combines the information from the two subsystems. We describe the determination of the hybrid exposure for events observed by the fluorescence telescopes in coincidence with at least one water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array. A detailed knowledge of the time dependence of the detection operations is crucial for an accurate evaluation of the exposure. We discuss the relevance of monitoring data collected during operations, such as the status of the fluorescence detector, background light and atmospheric conditions, that are used in both simulation and reconstruction. Data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory through 31 August 2007 showed evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic rays above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz`min energy threshold, 6 x 10(19) eV. The anisotropy was measured by the fraction of arrival directions that are less than 3.1 degrees from the position of an active galactic nucleus within 75 Mpc (using the Veron-Cetty and Veron 12th catalog). An updated measurement of this fraction is reported here using the arrival directions of cosmic rays recorded above the same energy threshold through 31 December 2009. The number of arrival directions has increased from 27 to 69, allowing a more precise measurement. The correlating fraction is (38(-6)(+7))%, compared with 21% expected for isotropic cosmic rays. This is down from the early estimate of (69-(+11)(13))%. The enlarged set of arrival directions is examined also in relation to other populations of nearby extragalactic objects: galaxies in the 2 Microns All Sky Survey and active galactic nuclei detected in hard X-rays by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope. A celestial region around the position of the radiogalaxy Cen A has the largest excess of arrival directions relative to isotropic expectations. The 2-point autocorrelation function is shown for the enlarged set of arrival directions and compared to the isotropic expectation. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a hybrid detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It combines a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level together with a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The fluorescence detector comprises 24 large telescopes specialized for measuring the nitrogen fluorescence caused by charged particles of cosmic ray air showers. In this paper we describe the components of the fluorescence detector including its optical system, the design of the camera, the electronics, and the systems for relative and absolute calibration. We also discuss the operation and the monitoring of the detector. Finally, we evaluate the detector performance and precision of shower reconstructions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

The air fluorescence detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to perforin calorimetric measurements of extensive air showers created by Cosmic rays of above 10(18) eV. To correct these measurements for the effects introduced by atmospheric fluctuations, the Observatory contains a group Of monitoring instruments to record atmospheric conditions across the detector site, ail area exceeding 3000 km(2). The atmospheric data are used extensively in the reconstruction of air showers, and are particularly important for the correct determination of shower energies and the depths of shower maxima. This paper contains a summary of the molecular and aerosol conditions measured at the Pierre Auger Observatory since the start of regular operations in 2004, and includes a discussion of the impact of these measurements oil air shower reconstructions. Between 10(18) and 10(20) eV, the systematic Uncertainties due to all atmospheric effects increase from 4% to 8% in measurements of shower energy, and 4 g cm(-2) to 8 g cm(-2) in measurements of the shower maximum. The performance of La(2-x)Ce(x)Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O(4) perovskites as catalysts for the high temperature water-gas shift reaction (H T-W G S R) was investigated. The catalysts were characterized by EDS, XRD, BET surface area, TPR, and XANES. The results showed that all the perovskites exhibited the La(2)CuO(4) orthorhombic structure, so the Pechini method is suitable for the preparation of pure perovskite. However, the La(1.90)Ce(0.10)CuO(4) perovskite alone, when calcined at 350/700 degrees C, also showed a (La(0.935)Ce(0.065))(2)CuO(4) perovskite with tetragonal structure, which produced a surface area higher than the other perovskites. The perovskites that exhibited the best catalytic performance were those calcined at 350/700 degrees C and, among these, La(1.90)Ce(0.10)CuO(4) was outstanding, probably because of the high surface area associated with the presence of the (La(0.935)Ce(0.065))(2)CuO(4) perovskite with tetragonal structure and orthorhombic La(2)CuO(4) phase.

Objetivos: Testar a hipótese de que a mucosa do intestino delgado proximal de crianças com diarréia persistente apresenta alterações morfométricas e estereológicas proporcionais ao estado nutricional. Métodos: estudo transversal, incluindo 65 pacientes pediátricos internados no período de maio de 1989 a novembro de 1991, com idade entre 4 meses e 5 anos , com diarréia de mais de 14 dias de duração, que necessitaram realizar biópsia de intestino delgado como parte do protocolo de investigação. A avaliação nutricional foi realizada pelos métodos de Gomez, Waterlow e pelos escores z para peso/ idade (P/I), peso/estatura (P/E) e estatura/idade (E/I), divididos em: eutróficos = z ≥ 2 DP e desnutridos z < -2dp; eutróficos = z ≥ 2 DP, risco nutricional = z < -1DP e desnutridos = z < -2DP; e de maneira contínua em ordem decrescente, utilizando-se as tabelas do NCHS. A captura e análise das imagens por programa de computador foi efetuada com o auxílio do patologista. Nos fragmentos de mucosa do intestino delgado, foram medidas a altura dos vilos, a profundidade das criptas, a espessura da mucosa, a espessura total da mucosa e a relação vilo/cripta, com aumento de 100 vezes. Com aumento de 500 vezes, foram medidas a altura do enterócito, a altura do núcleo e do bordo em escova. O programa computadorizado utilizado foi o Scion Image. A análise estereológica, foi feita com o uso de arcos ciclóides. Resultados: Para os escores z P/I, P/E e E/I, divididos em duas categorias de estado nutricional, não houve diferença estatisticamente significante quanto às medidas da altura dos vilos, profundidade das criptas, espessura da mucosa, espessura total da mucosa e relação vilo/cripta. A altura do enterócito foi a característica que apresentou maior diferença entre os grupos eutrófico e desnutrido, para os índices P/I e P/E, em 500 aumentos, sem atingir significância estatística. Quando os escores z foram divididos em 3 categorias de estado nutricional, a análise morfométrica digitalizada mostrou diferença estatisticamente significante para a relação vilo/cripta entre eutróficos e desnutridos leves e entre eutróficos e desnutridos moderados e graves (p=0,048). A relação vilo/cripta foi maior nos eutróficos. A avaliação nutricional pelos critérios de Waterlow e a análise estereológica não mostraram associação com o estado nutricional. Pelo método de Gomez, houve diferença estatisticamente significante para a altura do enterócito entre eutróficos e desnutridos de Grau III: quanto maior o grau de desnutrição, menor a altura do enterócito (r= -.3330; p = 0,005). As variáveis altura do enterócito, altura do núcleo do enterócito e do bordo em escova apresentaram uma clara associação com os índices P/I (r=0,25;p=0,038), P/E (r=0,029;p=0,019) e com o critério de avaliação nutricional de Gomez (r=-0,33;p=0,007), quando foram avaliadas pelo coeficiente de correlação de Pearson. A altura do núcleo mostrou associação com o índice P/I (r=0,24;p=0,054). A altura do bordo em escova mostrou associação com o índice P/I (r=0,26;p=0,032) e a avaliação nutricional de Gomez (r=-0,28;p=0,020). Conclusões: As associações encontradas entre o estado nutricional - avaliado de acordo com Gomez e os índices P/I e P/E - e as variáveis da mucosa do intestino delgado mostraram relação com o peso dos pacientes. Embora estas associações tenham sido de magnitude fraca a moderada, há uma tendência à diminuição do tamanho do enterócito, seu núcleo e seu bordo em escova à medida que aumenta o grau de desnutrição.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a toxicidade do herbicida S-metolachlor em plantas de milho oriundas de sementes com diferentes características morfológicas. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, localizada no município de Capão do Leão, RS. Os tratamentos foram compostos pelas combinações de três grupos de tamanhos de sementes, classificadas em peneiras de crivo oblongo [sementes retidas nas peneiras de largura 14/64 (peneira 14), 18/64 (peneira 18) e 21/64 (peneira 21)], de dois formatos de sementes (chata e redonda) e de cinco doses do herbicida S-metolachlor (0,00; 0,48; 0,96; 1,44; e 1,92 kg ha-1), totalizando-se 30 tratamentos. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial (3 x 2 x 5), com quatro repetições. Após a separação e classificação das sementes, procedeu-se à semeadura em vasos preenchidos com solo homogeneizado. em cada vaso foram semeadas oito sementes de milho, na profundidade de 3,0 cm, realizando-se, 24 horas depois, a aplicação do S-metolachlor em pré-emergência. Foram realizadas as seguintes avaliações: velocidade de emergência das plântulas; número total de plântulas emergidas; toxicidade visual e altura de plantas aos 7, 14 e 21 dias após a emergência (DAE); e biomassa seca das raízes e da parte aérea aos 21 DAE. O formato das sementes se mostrou fator importante na tolerância das plantas aos efeitos tóxicos do herbicida S-metolachlor, aplicado em pré-emergência, quando as sementes de milho são de menor tamanho, sendo observada maior toxicidade quando as plantas eram provenientes de sementes redondas. O aumento das doses aplicadas do S-metolachlor ocasionou reduções na aquisição de biomassa seca tanto da parte aérea como das raízes de plantas de milho, porém maior decréscimo se observou quanto ao acúmulo de biomassa seca das raízes.

Determinaram-se a ocorrência de potencial tardio em cães com cardiomiopatia induzida pela doxorrubicina e sua relação com o desenvolvimento de arritmias ventriculares ou morte súbita. Sete cães adultos, sem raça definida, de ambos os sexos foram utilizados. A cardiomiopatia foi induzida por infusão venosa lenta de doxorrubicina (30mg/m²) em intervalos de 21 dias, até uma dose total cumulativa de 240mg/m². Os animais foram monitorados ecocardiograficamente. Após a confirmação da cardiomiopatia, foi feito o registro da eletrocardiografia de alta resolução. Potenciais tardios foram observados em dois animais que morreram subitamente poucos dias após.

In vitro-matured (IVM) bovine oocytes were activated with single and combined treatments of strontium (S), ionomycin (1) and 6-DMAP (D). Using oocytes IVM for 26 h, we observed that activation altered cell cycle kinetics (faster progression, MIII arrest, or direct transition from MII to pronuclear stage) when compared to in vitro fertilization. The effect of oocyte age on early parthenogenesis was assessed in oocytes IVM for 22, 26 and 30 h. Better results in pronuclear development were obtained in treatments ISD (81.7%) at 22 h; D (66.7%), IS (63.3%), ID (73.3%) and ISD (76.7%) at 26 h; and D (86.7%), IS (85.0%) and ID (78.3%) at 30 h. Higher cleavage occurred on ISD (80.0%) at 22 h; ID (83.3%) and ISD (91.7%) at 26 h; and 1 (86.7%), IS (90.0%), ID (85.0%) and ISD (95.0%) at 30 h. More blastocysts were achieved in ID (25.0%) and ISD (18.3%) at 22h; and in ID at 26h (45.0%) and 30h (50.0%). We also observed that IS allowed higher haploid (77.4%) embryonic development, whilst ID was better for diploid (89.1%) development. It was concluded that association of S and D without I was not effective for blastocyst development; treatments using S were less influenced by oocyte age, but when S was associated with D there was a detrimental effect on aged oocytes; treatment ISD promoted higher activation and cleavage rates in young oocytes and ID protocol was the best for producing blastocysts.

Rhodium phthalocyanine (RhPc) was synthesized and ultra thin Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of RhPc were successfully fabricated. The LB film characterization was carried out using both UV-vis absorption spectra and Raman scattering. The Raman spectroscopy was carried out using 633 and 780 nm laser lines. LB films were deposited onto Ag nanoparticles to achieve the surface-enhanced pre-resonance Raman scattering (pre-SERRS) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for both laser lines, respectively, which allowed the characterization of the RhPc ultra thin films. The nuclear poly(A)-binding protein 1 (PABPN1) is a ubiquitously expressed protein that plays a critical role in polyadenylation. Short expansions of the polyalanine tract in the N-terminus of PABPN1 lead to oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD), which is an adult onset disease characterized by eyelid drooping, difficulty in swallowing and weakness in the proximal limb muscles. Although significant data from in vitro biochemical assays define the function of PABPN1 in control of poly(A) tail length, little is known about the role of PABPN1 in mammalian cells. To assess the function of PABPN1 in mammalian cells and specifically in cells affected in OPMD, we examined the effects of PABPN1 depletion using siRNA in primary mouse myoblasts from extraocular, pharyngeal and limb muscles. PABPN1 knockdown significantly decreased cell proliferation and myoblast differentiation during myogenesis in vitro. At the molecular level, PABPN1 depletion in myoblasts led to a shortening of mRNA poly(A) tails, demonstrating the cellular function of PABPN1 in polyadenylation control in a mammalian cell. In addition, PABPN1 depletion caused nuclear accumulation of poly(A) RNA, revealing that PABPN1 is required for proper poly(A) RNA export from the nucleus. Together, these experiments demonstrate that PABPN1 plays an essential role in myoblast proliferation and differentiation, suggesting that it is required for muscle regeneration and maintenance in vivo.
