Aiming to reduce and reuse waste oil from oily sludge generated in large volumes by the oil industry, types of nanostructured materials Al-MCM-41 and Al-SBA-15, with ratios of Si / Al = 50, were synthesized , and calcined solids used as catalysts in the degradation of oily sludge thermocatalytic oil from oilfield Canto do Amaro, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Samples of nanostructured materials were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TG / DTG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), absorption spectroscopy in the infrared Fourier transform (FT-IR) and adsorption nitrogen (BET). The characterization showed that the synthesized materials resulted in a catalyst nanostructure, and ordered pore diameter and surface area according to existing literature. The oily sludge sample was characterized by determining the API gravity and sulfur content and SARA analysis (saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes). The results showed a material equivalent to the average oil with API gravity of 26.1, a low sulfur content and considerable amount of resins and asphaltenes, presented above in the literature. The thermal and catalytic degradation of the oily sludge oil was performed from room temperature to 870 ° C in the ratios of heating of 5, 10 and 20 ° C min-1. The curves generated by TG / DTG showed a more accelerated degradation of oily sludge when it introduced the nanostructured materials. These results were confirmed by activation energy calculated by the method of Flynn-Wall, in the presence of catalysts reduced energy, in particular in the range of cracking, showing the process efficiency, mainly for extraction of lightweight materials of composition of oily sludge, such as diesel and gasoline

Aluminum alloyed with small atomic fractions of Sc, Zr, and Hf has been shown to exhibit high temperature microstructural stability that may improve high temperature mechanical behavior. These quaternary alloys were designed using thermodynamic modeling to increase the volume fraction of precipitated tri-aluminide phases to improve thermal stability. When aged during a multi-step, isochronal heat treatment, two compositions showed a secondary room-temperature hardness peak up to 700 MPa at 450°C. Elevated temperature hardness profiles also indicated an increase in hardness from 200-300°C, attributed to the precipitation of Al3Sc, however, no secondary hardness response was observed from the Al3Zr or Al3Hf phases in this alloy.

Catering to society’s demand for high performance computing, billions of transistors are now integrated on IC chips to deliver unprecedented performances. With increasing transistor density, the power consumption/density is growing exponentially. The increasing power consumption directly translates to the high chip temperature, which not only raises the packaging/cooling costs, but also degrades the performance/reliability and life span of the computing systems. Moreover, high chip temperature also greatly increases the leakage power consumption, which is becoming more and more significant with the continuous scaling of the transistor size. As the semiconductor industry continues to evolve, power and thermal challenges have become the most critical challenges in the design of new generations of computing systems. In this dissertation, we addressed the power/thermal issues from the system-level perspective. Specifically, we sought to employ real-time scheduling methods to optimize the power/thermal efficiency of the real-time computing systems, with leakage/ temperature dependency taken into consideration. In our research, we first explored the fundamental principles on how to employ dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) techniques to reduce the peak operating temperature when running a real-time application on a single core platform. We further proposed a novel real-time scheduling method, “M-Oscillations” to reduce the peak temperature when scheduling a hard real-time periodic task set. We also developed three checking methods to guarantee the feasibility of a periodic real-time schedule under peak temperature constraint. We further extended our research from single core platform to multi-core platform. We investigated the energy estimation problem on the multi-core platforms and developed a light weight and accurate method to calculate the energy consumption for a given voltage schedule on a multi-core platform. Finally, we concluded the dissertation with elaborated discussions of future extensions of our research.

We present spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 870 μm dust continuum maps of six massive, compact, dusty star-forming galaxies at z ~ 2.5. These galaxies are selected for their small rest-frame optical sizes (r_e,F160W ~ 1.6 kpc) and high stellar mass densities that suggest that they are direct progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies at z ~ 2. The deep observations yield high far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of L_IR = 10^12.3-12.8 L_⨀ and star formation rates (SFRs) of SFR = 200–700 M_⊙ yr^−1, consistent with those of typical star-forming "main sequence" galaxies. The high spatial resolution (FWHM ~ 0 12–0 18) ALMA and Hubble Space Telescope photometry are combined to construct deconvolved, mean radial profiles of their stellar mass and (UV+IR) SFR. We find that the dusty, nuclear IR–SFR overwhelmingly dominates the bolometric SFR up to r ~ 5 kpc, by a factor of over 100× from the unobscured UV–SFR. Furthermore, the effective radius of the mean SFR profile (r_e,SFR ~ 1 kpc) is ~30% smaller than that of the stellar mass profile. The implied structural evolution, if such nuclear starburst last for the estimated gas depletion time of Δt = ±100 Myr, is a 4×increase of the stellar mass density within the central 1 kpc and a 1.6× decrease of the half-mass–radius. This structural evolution fully supports dissipation-driven, formation scenarios in which strong nuclear starbursts transform larger, star-forming progenitors into compact quiescent galaxies.

ABSTRACT: Global support for Conservation Agriculture (CA) as a pathway to Sustainable Intensification is strong. CA revolves around three principles: no-till (or minimal soil disturbance), soil cover, and crop rotation. The benefits arising from the ease of crop management, energy/cost/time savings, and soil and water conservation led to widespread adoption of CA, particularly on large farms in the Americas and Australia, where farmers harness the tools of modern science: highly-sophisticated machines, potent agrochemicals, and biotechnology. Over the past 10 years CA has been promoted among smallholder farmers in the (sub-) tropics, often with disappointing results. Growing evidence challenges the claims that CA increases crop yields and builds-up soil carbon although increased stability of crop yields in dry climates is evident. Our analyses suggest pragmatic adoption on larger mechanized farms, and limited uptake of CA by smallholder farmers in developing countries. We propose a rigorous, context-sensitive approach based on Systems Agronomy to analyze and explore sustainable intensification options, including the potential of CA. There is an urgent need to move beyond dogma and prescriptive approaches to provide soil and crop management options for farmers to enable the Sustainable Intensification of agriculture.

Pears have been grown in the south region of Brazil, where the climatic conditions are favourable. The aim of this work was to determine the harvest maturity index as well as maximum storage period of 'Packham's Triumph? and 'Rocha' pears to maintain quality attributes. The ?Packham?s Triumph? fruit were harvested from a commercial orchard at 7 days intervals and flesh firmness was used as a maturity index (MI1=76, MI2=67 and MI3=58 N). ?Rocha? pears were harvested twice and they were considered as MI1 and MI3 because of the firmness values. The fruit were stored at 1±1C and 90-95% RH for 15, 30, 45 and 60 days and evaluated at the end of each storage period and after five days at room temperature (24±1C), simulating a helflife period. Flesh firmness, water loss, peduncle dehydration, epidermis colour, soluble solids, titratable acidity were measured. ?Packham?s? pears harvested at MI1 and MI2 showed firmness loss after 30 days of cold storage, whereas fruit harvested at MI3 retained the initial values, resulting in firmer fruit after 60 days (P<0.001). Fruit harvested in MI3 had less firmness loss after 5 days at room temperature following 45 and 60 days of cold storage. ?Rocha? pears harvested in MI1 and MI3 showed firmness reduction during cold storage, which was intensified at room temperature. Maximum values of water loss approached 6%. Fruit peduncles of both cultivars dehydrated after 60 days of cold storage, but their colour remained green, independent of harvest maturity index. ?Packham?s Triumph? and ?Rocha? pears harvested at MI3 showed better quality attributes after 60 days of cold storage plus 5 days of shelf-life than fruit harvested at other maturity stages.

The present thesis focuses on the permebility analisys of Aquivion® 980 Perfluoro sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer with particular reference to the influence of the equivalent weight (gram of polymer per molSO3H) on the permeation properties. Aquivion grade tested, indeed, were characterized by a lower equivalent weight ( 870 g/molSO3H against 980 of the present material) with respect to data present in the open literature. Permeability of different gases (CO2, N2, and CH4) was tested at different temperatures and different humidity, a parameter which greatly influences the gas transport in such hydrophilic material- Aquivion® swells consistently in humid conditions increasing its gas permeability of more than one order of magnitude with respect to values prevailing in dry conditions. Present data confirm such behavior being the permeability of all gases and vapors tested substantially increased in presence of water. Interestingly the increase in permeability results be similar for all the gases inspected, hence such enhanced permeation capability is not associated to a selectivity loss that happens in polymeric membranes. Although, the results, of CO2, are lower compared to those obtained with the different grades, with lower equivalent weight, of Aquivion, thus suggesting that an increase of this parameter is detrimental for both permeability and selectivity of the membranes with respect to CO2. This is likely related to the fact that a lower content of SO3H groups makes it difficult to have an interconnected water domain inside the membranes. A modeling approach was considered to describe the experimental data and to give a better insight into the observed behavior, unfortunately, it resulted not sensitive enough to catch the differences between the gas permeability in PSFAs with high and low equivalent weight. The latter were indeed usually contained within 10-20% which results to be the in the same range of model precision when used in a predictive way.
Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Phosporite Deposits from Tropic Seamount (NE Tropical Atlantic Ocean)
Resumo:
Marine phosphorite deposits can form in a variety of environments, and despite of similar P contents, their mineralogy can change substantially. Seamount phosphorites are increasingly recognized for their P resources and are known to concentrate rare earth elements (REEs) and yttrium (Y) during early diagenetic formation, much more than continental-margin phosphorite deposits. Their importance is increasing in terms of economic potential but have always been studied for paleoenvironmental reconstruction purposes. The Canary Island Seamount Province (CISP) has been extensively studied for its Fe-Mn crusts and nodules deposits, but to date there has not been any systematic study on the phosphorite substrate rocks. This study aims at characterizing the mineralogy and geochemistry of the Tropic seamount phosphorites and offer insights into their mechanisms of formation. The Tropic seamount is a guyot that presents a variety of depositional environments. Two types of phosphorite slabs were identified: (1) a massive facies with oxic enrichments of Mn, Cr, Co, Ni and Cu located on the summit edges and flanks, and (2) a complex facies with suboxic-to-anoxic enrichments of U and V observed on the phosphorites located on the summit of the guyot. Both phosphorite types experienced advanced phosphatization (P2O5 between 24 and 31 wt.%, 3-4 wt.% of F). Differences in uptake of rare earth elements + yttrium (REY) and variations in mineralogy (e.g., presence of foraminifera vs. rounded glauconite grains, carbonate fragments or bioclasts) between the two types, allow phosphorites that formed in upwelling, nutrient-rich and oxic-suboxic environments to be distinguished from those which formed in suboxic-anoxic organic-poor environments. A potential combined ore deposit (Fe-Mn crusts + phosphorites) with high REY contents, like the seamount phosphorites analyzed in this study (ΣREY=870 μg/g on average), could help supply the resources needed for green-tech and high-tech applications.
