capillary electrophoresis (CE) is characterized. A 300 mum diameter Pt working electrode was used to directly couple with a 75 mum inner diameter separation capillary without an electric field decoupler. The hydrodynamic cyclic voltammogram (CV) of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) showed that electrophoretic current did not affect the ECL reaction. The presence of high-voltage (HV) field only resulted in the shift of the ECL detection potential. The distance of capillary to electrode was an important parameter for optimizing detection performance as it determined the characteristics of mass transport toward the electrode and the actual concentration of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) in the detection region. The optimum distance of capillary to electrode was decided by the inner diameter of the capillary, too. For a 75 mum capillary, the working electrode should be placed away from the capillary outlet at a distance within the range of 20-260 mum. The effects of pH value of ECL solution and molecular structure of analytes on peak height and theoretical plate numbers were discussed. Using the 75 mum capillary, under the optimum conditions, the method provided a linear range for tripropylamine (TPA) between 1 x 10(-10) and 1 X 10(-5) mol/L with correlation coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio S/N = 3) was 5.0 x 10(-11) mol/L. The relative standard deviation in peak height for eight consecutive injections was 5.6%. By this new technique lidocaine spiked in a urine sample was determined. The method exhibited the linear range for lidocaine from 5.0 x 10(-8) to 1.0 X 10(-5) mol/L with correlation efficient of 0.998. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) was 2.0 x 10(-1) mol/L.

We report capillary electrophoresis coupling to a solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detector for the first time. The solid-state ECL detector was fabricated by immobilizing the ECL reagent tris(2,2'-bipyridyf)ruthenium (TBR) in poly-(p-styrenesulfonate)-silica-poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting 4-vinylpyridine copolymer films. The excellent stability of the solid-state ECL detector in the phosphate solution satisfied application in CE. The CE with solid-state ECL detector system was characterized using tripropylamine (TPA) and proline. The influences of detection potential, the concentration of TBR in the film, and pH value of ECL buffer were investigated. The linear range for TPA and proline was 0.005-10 muM and 5-10 mM with correlation coefficients of 0.997 and 0.998, respectively. The detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio S/N = 3) was estimated to be 0.002 and 2.0 muM for TPA and proline, respectively. The relative standard deviations for 1.0 pm TPA and 1.0 mm proline were 8.7% and 7.5% with theoretical plate numbers of 70 000 and 16 000, respectively. Compared with the CE-ECL of TBR in aqueous solution, the CE coupling with solid-state ECL detector system gave the same sensitivity of analysis.

The rare earth (Eu3+, Dy3+)-polyoxometalate thin films were fabricated on quartz plate by the sol-gel method. The thin films were demonstrated by the luminescence spectra. The thin films exhibit the characteristic emission bands of the rare-earth ions. It is noticed that the yellow to blue intensity ratio (Y:B) of Dy3+ and the red to orange ratio (R:O) of Eu3+ in the films are different from that of the corresponding solids. Furthermore, the thin films present shorter fluorescence lifetime than the pure complexes. The reasons that were responsible for these results were also discussed.

A new type of tyrosinase biosensor was developed for the detection of phenolic compounds, based on the immobilization of tyrosinase in a sol-gel-derived composite matrix that is composed of titanium oxide sol and a grafting copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine. Tyrosinase entrapped in the composite matrix can retain its activity to a large extent owing to the good biocompatibility of the matrix. The parameters of the fabrication process and the variables of the experimental conditions for the enzyme electrode were optimized. The resulting sensor exhibited a fast response (20 s), high sensitivity (145.5 muA mmol(-1) 1) and good storage stability. A detection limit of 0.5 muM catechol was obtained at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.

The interactions of Safranin T (ST) with several nucleic acids have been investigated by electrochemical, UV-visible and CD spectroscopic techniques. The form of the nucleic acid-ST complexes is sensitive to the ratio of the two species. Two electrochemically inactive complexes such as, nucleic acid-ST and nucleic acid-2ST, were formed while ST interacts with nucleic acids. Two processes were obtained from spectral experiments: (1) at the high value of R (R is defined as the ratio of the total concentration of ST to that of nucleic acid), ST is groove-binding with stacking, (2) st the low value of R, ST is groove-binding without stacking. Intrinsic binding constants were obtained by spectral methods. The experiments also show that electrostatic binding plays an important role in the interaction of ST with nucleic acids.

Single chain single crystals (SCSC) of gutta percha (GP) were prepared by a dilute-solution spraying method. Electron diffraction (ED) patterns revealed that the single chain single crystal was of a new crystalline modification, the delta form. The images of SCSC of GP obtained with a high resolution electron microscope (HREM) showed a two dimensional periodic structure. Most of the images consisted of lattice fringes derived from the (001) zone. This is the first time that the single chain single crystal images of GP have been observed at a molecular level. Micrographs were image processed using optical filtering methods to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, and were compared with computer-generated simulations of the images. From the viewpoint of the defects seen in high resolution images, the crystal formation and melting processes are discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Prepolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (Pre-PEG) were synthesized by reacting azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and their structures were characterized by IR and UV. The molecular weight of pre-PEG was related to the feed ratio and reaction time. These prepolymers can be used to prepare block copolymers - poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(butyl acrylate) (PEO-b-PBA) by radical polymerization in the presence of butyl acrylate (BA). Solution polymerization was a suitable technique for this step. The yield and the molecular weight of the product were related to the ratio of the prepolymer to BA, the reaction time, and temperature. GPC showed that the molecular weight increased with a higher ratio of BA to pre-PEO. The intrinsic viscosity of the copolymers was only slightly dependent on reaction time, but decreased at higher reaction temperatures, as did the amount of PEA homopolymer. A novel device of multiple cylinder microelectrodes coupled with a parallel planar electrode was proposed. The feedback diffusion current at this device was studied using bilinear transformation of coordinates in the diffusion space, where lines of mass flux and equiconcentration are represented by orthogonal circular functions. The derived expression for the steady-state current shows that as the gap between cylindrical microelectrodes and planar electrode diminishes, greatly enhanced currents can be obtained with high signal-to-noise ratio. Other important geometrical parameters such as distance between adjacent microcylinders, cylinder radius, and number of microcylinders were also discussed in detail.
