A populational sample of Isocheles sawayai Forest & Saint Laurent, 1967 was analysed in order to detect the validity of the shell aperture size as a parameter in the gastropod shell selection. The gastropods genus occupied by this hermit crab were: Thais, Buccinanops, Olivancillaria, Polinices and Cymatium. The power function (y = a.x(b)) was the best equation to represent biologically the regression analyses carried out among the measured parameters.

1. The mycelial Pi-repressible acid phosphatase presented p-nitrophenylphosphatase activity with negative cooperativity and Michaelian behavior when synthesized by the wild-type and pho-2A mutant strains of Neurospora crassa, respectively.2. The major acid phosphatase present in cell extracts of the pho-2A mutant of N. crassa grown in low Pi medium is more thermolabile (t1/2 = 4 min at 54-degrees-C, pH 5.4) than that of the wild strain (stable for at least 80 min at 54-degrees-C, pH 5.4).3. The pho-2A mutant of N. crassa secreted a more thermolabile acid phosphatase (t1/2 = 30 min at 50-degrees-C, pH 5.4) than the wild strain (t1/2 of at least 80 min at 50-degrees-C, pH 5.4).4. The pho-2A mutant of N. crassa synthesized a more thermolabile acid phosphatase (t1/2 = 37 min at 54-degrees-C, pH 5.4) than the wild strain in high Pi medium (t1/2 = 14 min al 54-degrees-C, pH 5.4).5. The pleiotropic nature of the pho-2 locus and its possible involvement in the mechanism of phosphatase secretion by N. crassa are proposed.

The objective of the present research was to study the effects of auxins and cumarin, in rooting of stem cuttings of Platanus acerifolia. The application of auxins and cumarin in the base of cuttings' was by means of talc application. The following treatments were applied: T1 (control); T2 (NAA 0,5% in talc); T3 (IBA 0,5% in talc) and T4 (cumarin 0,75% in talc). Three experiments were done with collected branches in different periods with the purpose, of determining the best period to take the cuttings. Sixty days after planting the following observations were made: root cuttings; length of root formation (cm.); total fresh weight (g.); average fresh weight (g.); total dry weight (g.); average dry weight (g.). It was concluded that the best period of taking the branches to make the cuttings was the spring time. It was also observed that the cuttings treated with NAA or IBA in talc enhanced the rooting.

Adriamycin, a commonly used antineoplastic antibiotic, induces glomerular lesions in rats, resulting in persistent proteinuria and glomerulosclerosis. We studied the effects of dietary protein and of an angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibitor on the progression of this nephropathy and the evolution of the histological lesions, as well as mesangial macromolecule flow. Adriamycin nephropathy was induced by injecting a single iv dose of adriamycin (3 mg/kg body weight) into the tail vein of male Wistar rats (weight, 180-200 g). In Experiment I animals with adriamycin-induced nephropathy were fed diets containing 6% (Low-Protein Diet Group = LPDG), 20% (Normal-Protein Diet Group = NPDG) and 40% (High-protein Diet Group = HPDG) protein and were observed for 30 weeks. In Experiment II the rats with adriamycin nephropathy were divided into 2 groups: ADR, that received adriamycin alone, and ADR-ENA, that received adriamycin plus enalapril, an angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibitor. The animals were sacrificed after a 24-week observation period. Six hours before sacrifice the animals were injected with I-131-ferritin and the amount of I-131-ferritin in the glomeruli was measured. In Experiment III, renal histology was performed 4, 8 and 16 weeks after adriamycin injection. At the end of Experiment I the tubulointerstitial lesion index was 2 for LPDG, 8 for NPDG, and 7.5 for HPDG (P<0.05); the frequency of glomerulosclerosis was 19 +/- 6.1% in LPDG, 42.6 +/- 6% in NPDG, and 54 +/- 9% in HPDG (P<0.05); and proteinuria was 61.1 +/- 25 mg/24 h in LPDG, 218.7 +/- 27.5 mg/24 h in NPDG, and 324.5 +/- 64.8 mg/24 h in HPDG (P<0.05). In Experiment II, at sacrifice, 24-h proteinuria was 189 +/- 16.1 mg in ADR, and 216 +/- 26.1 mg in ADR-ENA (P>0.05); the tubulointerstitial lesion index was 5 for ADR, and 5 for ADR-ENA (P>0.05); the frequency of glomerulosclerosis was 40 +/- 5.2% in ADR and 44 +/- 6% in ADR-ENA (P>0.05); the amount of I-131-ferritin in the mesangium was 214.26 +/- 22.71 cpm/mg protein in ADR and 253.77 +/- 69.72 cpm/mg protein in ADR-ENA (P>0.05). In Experiment III, sequential histological analysis revealed an acute tubulointerstitial cellular infiltrate at week 4, which was decreased at week 8. Tubular casts and dilatation were first seen at week 8 and increased at week 16 when few glomerular lesions were found. The results suggest that the tubulointerstitial lesions may play a role in the development of glomerulosclerosis in adriamycin-induced nephropathy.

The alimentary and glycemic responses to cytoglycopenia were studied in thirty-one Nile tilapia alevins of indeterminate sex and age, measuring on average 10.67 +/- 0.82 cm. The cytoglycopenia was provoked by ip injection of 60 mg/kg 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG, N = 16). The control group (N = 15) was submitted to ip injection of 0.2 ml saline. Blood samples for glucose determination were obtained before and three hours after drug administration by cardiac puncture. Food was then offered ad libitum. One hour later the animals were sacrificed and their stomachs removed. The difference in wet weight between full and empty stomach was utilized to quantify the food intake. Median food intake was 0.3877 g for the fish treated with 2-DG and 0.107 g for the animals injected with saline. This difference was statistically significant by the Mann-Whitney test (P<0.05). The median values of blood glucose levels before drug injection were 46.19 mg/100 ml in the 2-DG-treated fish and 44.54 mg/100 ml in the control group. Three hours after drug administration, the values were 48.64 mg/100 ml in the experimental group and 56.90 mg/100 ml in the control group. The difference between the values of blood glucose before and after the drug was not significant for either group. We conclude that glucoprivation provokes food intake in fish and that the same glucoprivation was not sufficient to provoke hyperglycemia.

The changes of arterial pressure promoted by bolus injection of 50 mg phenylephrine (PHE) were studied in 20 atropinized patients (5 normal subjects, 13 patients with mitral valve disease, 1 patient with essential arterial hypertension and 1 patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) submitted to routine catheterism. Patients with aortic valve disease, left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and intracardiac shunt were excluded from the study. All patients were in sinus rhythm, without heart failure. Arterial pressure started to increase at 14.8 +/- 5.4 s (range, 5.6 to 27 s; mean +/- SD) after PHE. There was an increase of 37.8 +/- 16.7 mmHg (range, 12.5 to 70 mmHg) in systolic pressure and of 26.6 +/- 11.1 mmHg (range, 7.5 to 42.5 mmHg) in diastolic pressure. Peak hypertension was attained at 36.6 +/- 16.4 s (range, 10.8 to 64.9 s) and hypertension continued for 176 +/- 92 s (range, 11 to 365 s). Heart rate was 114 +/- 21 bpm before PHE and 111 +/- 21 bpm (P<0.05) after PHE. There were no adverse events associated with intravenous PHE injection in any patient, in accordance with the general view that bolus injection of PHE is a safe and practical maneuver to promote arterial hypertension.

Through the point-centered quarter method, a phytosociological study was carried out in an area of semideciduous mesophytic forest with 190 ha, in the municipality of Jahu,SP. Due to the fact of the forest be crossed by three small rivers, for the sampling process, the Total Area was divided in two sampling areas: the Area I (under the influence of the rivers) and the Area II (without this influence). Some differences between the two regions were observed.

One hundred and twenty-six strains of Campylobacter jejuni isolated from swine with diarrhea were examined for the production of enteroxin, by culture filtrate inoculation into ileal loops in several animal species.Four (3,1 %) of the strains tested produced fluid in ligated ileal loop of albino rabbit, 19 (15 %) in rat and 14(11, 1 %) in swine. By the test of intragastric inoculation in suckling mouse, none of the strains revealed capacity to produce enterotoxin, although two strains were considered suspicious. Twelve (54,5 %) of the strains that induced ileal fluid in rat and swine produced cytotoxic effect in monkey kidney cells (Vero), affecting up to 60 % of the monolayer. However, no alteration was observed in hamster kidney cells (BHK).

Glucocorticoid hormones modulate the actions of peptide growth factors and constitute important therapeutic tools as anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agents. The C6 rat glioma cell line responds to glucocorticoids with changes in morphology and growth block. The hyper-responsive ST1 cell variant displays a dramatic phenotypic reversion under the influence of these hormones. Thus, the transformed and tumorigenic cells reversibly change to a normal and non-tumorigenic phenotype. In addition, the cells also produce a C-type retrovirus. We used poly A(+) mRNA from ST1 cells that had been treated with hydrocortisone to generate a cDNA library that was then screened, by differential hybridization, for glucocorticoid-responsive cellular sequences. The retroviral genomic RNA was used to generate a viral-specific probe. Cross hybridization led to the isolation of at least 4 cDNA clones of which 3 are cellular sequences and one corresponds to a retroviral gene. These clones were characterized by DNA sequencing and Northern blot hybridization analysis.

A number of amphibians and reptiles have cyclic behavior, becoming inactive with the coming of the dry season. In South America this pattern of activity is common, particularly in savannah-like vegetation. During the dry season amphibians burrow into the mud or soil, and either form a cocoon or increase the osmotic concentration of body fluids to reduce evaporative water loss. Some phyllomedusid tree frogs coat their body surface with skin secretion and excrete uric acid to minimize water loss. Reptiles also retreat into shelter deep enough to avoid temperature fluctuation during estivation or reduce metabolic response to temperature. Reduction of temperature sensitivity of the metabolism seems to be a strategy common to estivating amphibians and reptiles. Despite seasonal change of the environment, some species of reptiles are active all year round.

Quantitative Ureaplasma urealyticum culture was performed on clean first-void and midstream urine to evaluate the presence of these mollicutes in the urinary tract. The results, expressed as color changing units (CCU), showed that 14 (63%) of the 22 Ureaplasma urealyticum positive patients yielded counts equal to or higher that 10(7) CCU/mL for both the initial and the middle urine specimens. No abnormal chemical or microscopic findings (protein content, leukocyte numbers) were observed. The occurrence of U. urealyticum in midstream urine samples, even when numbers are considered, may be no more than a guide to the presence of ureaplasmas in the urinary tract.
