Spectroscopic catalogues, such as GEISA and HITRAN, do not yet include information on the water vapour continuum that pervades visible, infrared and microwave spectral regions. This is partly because, in some spectral regions, there are rather few laboratory measurements in conditions close to those in the Earth’s atmosphere; hence understanding of the characteristics of the continuum absorption is still emerging. This is particularly so in the near-infrared and visible, where there has been renewed interest and activity in recent years. In this paper we present a critical review focusing on recent laboratory measurements in two near-infrared window regions (centred on 4700 and 6300 cm−1) and include reference to the window centred on 2600 cm−1 where more measurements have been reported. The rather few available measurements, have used Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS), cavity ring down spectroscopy, optical-feedback – cavity enhanced laser spectroscopy and, in very narrow regions, calorimetric interferometry. These systems have different advantages and disadvantages. Fourier Transform Spectroscopy can measure the continuum across both these and neighbouring windows; by contrast, the cavity laser techniques are limited to fewer wavenumbers, but have a much higher inherent sensitivity. The available results present a diverse view of the characteristics of continuum absorption, with differences in continuum strength exceeding a factor of 10 in the cores of these windows. In individual windows, the temperature dependence of the water vapour self-continuum differs significantly in the few sets of measurements that allow an analysis. The available data also indicate that the temperature dependence differs significantly between different near-infrared windows. These pioneering measurements provide an impetus for further measurements. Improvements and/or extensions in existing techniques would aid progress to a full characterisation of the continuum – as an example, we report pilot measurements of the water vapour self-continuum using a supercontinuum laser source coupled to an FTS. Such improvements, as well as additional measurements and analyses in other laboratories, would enable the inclusion of the water vapour continuum in future spectroscopic databases, and therefore allow for a more reliable forward modelling of the radiative properties of the atmosphere. It would also allow a more confident assessment of different theoretical descriptions of the underlying cause or causes of continuum absorption.

We report on the photophysical properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions In toluene solutions of poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl](PFO). Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy in the near-infrared and visible spectral regions are used to study the interaction of the dispersed SWNTs with the wrapped polymer. Molecular dynamics simulations of the PFO-SWNT hybrids in toluene were carried out to evaluate the energetics of different wrapping geometries. The simulated fluorescence spectra in the visible region were obtained by the quantum chemical ZINDO-CI method, using a sampling of structures obtained from the dynamics trajectories. The tested schemes consider polymer chains aligned along the nanotube axis, where chirality has a minimal effect, or forming helical structures, where a preference for high chiral angles is evidenced. Moreover, toluene affects the polymer structure favoring the helical conformation. Simulations show that the most stable hybrid system is the PFO-wrapped (8,6) nanotube, in agreement with the experimentally observed selectivity.

In order to validate the Geant4 toolkit for dosimetry applications, simulations were performed to calculate conversion coefficients h(10, alpha) from air kerma free-in-air to personal dose equivalent Hp(10, a). The simulations consisted of two parts: the production of X-rays with radiation qualities of narrow and wide spectra, and the interaction of radiation with ICRU tissue-equivalent and ISO water slab phantoms. The half-value layers of the X-ray spectra obtained by simulation were compared with experimental results. Mean energy, spectral resolution, half-value layers and conversion coefficients were compared with ISO reference values. The good agreement between results from simulation and reference data shows that the Geant4 is suitable for dosimetry applications which involve photons with energies in the range of ten to a few hundreds of keV. In this work, a sol-gel route was used to prepare Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) glassy thin films by spin-coating technique looking for the preparation and optimization of planar waveguides for integrated optics. The films were deposited on silica and silicon substrates using stable sols synthesized by the sol-gel process. Deposits with thicknesses ranging between 520 and 720 nm were prepared by a multi-layer process involving heat treatments at different temperatures from glass transition to the film crystallization and using heating rates of 2 degrees C/min. The structural characterization of the layers was performed by using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy as a function of the heat treatment. Microstructural evolution in terms of annealing temperatures was followed by high resolution scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Optical transmission spectra were used to determine the refractive index and the film thicknesses through the envelope method. The optical and guiding properties of the films were studied by m-line spectroscopy. The best films were monomode with 620 nm thickness and a refractive index around 1.664 at 980 nm wavelength. They showed good waveguiding properties with high light-coupling efficiency and low propagation loss at 632.8 and 1550 nm of about 0.88 dB/cm. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

PbMoO(4) micro-octahedrons were prepared by the coprecipitation method at room temperature without the presence of surfactants and processed in a conventional hydrothermal at different temperatures (from 60 to 120 degrees C) for 10 min. These micro-octahedrons were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman (MR) spectroscopy, and its morphology was investigated by field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM). The optical properties were analyzed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and MR spectra confirmed that the PbMoO(4) micro-octahedrons are characterized by a scheelite-type tetragonal structure. FEG-SEM micrographs points, out that these structures present a polydisperse particle size distribution in consequence of a predominant growth mechanism via aggregation of particles. In addition, it was observed that the hydrothermal conditions favored a spontaneous formation of micro-octahedrons interconnected along a common crystallographic orientation (oriented-attachment), resulting in self-organized structures. An intense blue PL emission at room temperature was observed in these micro-octahedrons when they were excited with a 350 nm wavelength. The origin of the PL emissions as well as its intensity variations are explained by means of a model based on both distorted [MoO(4)] and [PbO(8)] clusters into the lattice.

Photoexpansion and photobleaching effects have been observed in amorphous GeS(2) + Ga(2)O(3) (GGSO) thin films, when their surfaces were exposed to UV light. The photoinduced changes on the surface of the samples are indications that the structure has been changed as a result of photoexcitation. In this paper, micro-Raman, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and backscattering electrons (BSE) microscopy were the techniques used to identify the origin of these effects. Raman spectra revealed that these phenomena are a consequence of the Ge-S bonds` breakdown and the formation of new Ge-O bonds, with an increase of the modes associated with Ge-O-Ge bonds and mixed oxysulphide tetrahedral units (S-Ge-O). The chemical composition measured by EDX and BSE microscopy images indicated that the irradiated area is oxygen rich. So, the present paper provides fundamental insights into the influence of the oxygen within the glass matrix on the considered photoinduced effects. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reaction of dimethylthallium(III) hydroxide with picolinic acid (Hpic), 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (H(2)3hpic) and 6-hydroxypicolinic acid (H(2)6hpic) in an aqueous/methanol mixture afforded the complexes [TlMe(2)(pic)] (1), [TlMe(2)(H3hpic)] (2) and [TlMe(2)(H6hpic)] (3), respectively. Complex 3`, [NaTlMe(2)(6hpic)(2)](n), was obtained as a minor product from a methanolic solution of 3. Compounds 1-3 were characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy and, in the cases of 1, 2 and Y, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 3` is the first example of an H6hpic(-) heterobimetallic compound to be isolated. The (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra of 1 and 2 are also discussed. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cadmium chloride complex of 1-furoyl-3-cyclohexylthiourea (CyTu) was prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and Raman spectroscopy. The structure of the complex was determined by single crystal X-ray methods (space group Bbab, a = 20.918(1), b = 23.532(1), c = 23.571(1) angstrom, = = , Z = 8). Each cadmium has distorted octahedral geometry, coordinated by two chlorides and the thiocarbonyl sulfurs from four CyTu molecules. All the spectroscopic data are consistent with coordination of CyTu by sulfur to cadmium.

This work describes the covalent grafting of 3,4,9,10-perylenediimides (PDI), which are fluorescent dyes with very interesting optical properties, onto the walls of mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 and SBA-15. The mesoporous materials were first treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) in anhydrous toluene, generating amine-containing surfaces. The amine-containing materials were then reacted with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCA), generating surface-grafted PDI. Infrared spectra of the materials showed that the reaction with amino groups took place at both anhydride ends of the PTCA molecule, resulting in surface attached diimides. No sign of unreacted anhydride groups were found. The new materials, designated as MCMN2PDI and SBAN(2)PDI, presented absorption and emission spectra corresponding to weakly coupled PDI chromophores, in contrast to the strongly coupled rings usually found in solid PDI samples. The materials showed a red fluorescence, which could be observed by the naked eye under UV irradiation or with a fluorescence microscope. The PDI-modified mesoporous materials showed electrical conductivity when pressed into a pellet. The results presented here show that the new materials are potentially useful in the design of nanowires. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Transport coefficients have been measured as a function of the concentration of sulfur dioxide, SO(2), dissolved in 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-imide, [BMMI][Tf(2)N], as well as in its lithium salt solution, Li[Tf(2)N]. The SO(2) reduces viscosity and density and increases conductivity and diffusion coefficients in both the neat [BMMI] [Tf(2)N] and the [BMMI][Tf(2)N]-Li[Tf(2)N] solution. The conductivity enhancement is not assigned to a simple viscosity effect; the weakening of ionic interactions upon SO(2) addition also plays a role. Microscopic details of the SO(2) effect were unraveled using Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The Raman spectra suggest that the Li(+)-[Tf(2)N] interaction is barely affected by SO(2), and the SO(2)-[Tf(2)N] interaction is weaker than previously observed in an investigation of an ionic liquid containing the bromide anion. Transport coefficients calculated by MD simulations show the same trend as the experimental data with respect to SO(2) content. The MD simulations provide structural information on SO(2) molecules around [Tf(2)N], in particular the interaction of the sulfur atom of SO(2) with oxygen and fluorine atoms of the anion. The SO(2)-[BMMI] interaction is also important because the [BMMI] cations with above-average mobility have a larger number of nearest-neighbor SO(2) molecules.

The adsorption of pyridine (py) on Fe, Co, Ni and Ag electrodes was studied using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to gain insight into the nature of the adsorbed species. The wavenumber values and relative intensities of the SERS bands were compared to the normal Raman spectrum of the chemically prepared transition metal complexes. Raman spectra of model clusters M(4)(py) (four metal atoms bonded to one py moiety) and M(4)(alpha-pyridil) where M = Ag, Fe, Co or Ni were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and used to interpret the experimental SERS results. The similarity of the calculated M(4)(py) spectra with the experimental SERS spectra confirm the molecular adsorption of py on the surface of the metallic electrodes. All these results exclude the formation of adsorbed alpha-pyridil species, as suggested previously. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Highly stable and crystalline V(2)O(5) nanoparticles with an average diameter of 15 nm have been easily prepared by thermal treatment of a bariandite-like vanadium oxide, V(10)O(24)center dot 9H(2)O. Their characterization was carried out by powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The fibrous and nanostructured film obtained by electrophoretic deposition of the V(2)O(5) nanoparticles showed good electroactivity when submitted to cyclic voltammetry in an ionic liquid-based electrolyte. The use of this film for the preparation of a nanostructured electrode led to an improvement of about 50% in discharge capacity values when compared with similar electrodes obtained by casting of a V(2)O(5) xerogel. This work deals with the structural and vibrational characterization of PANI nanofibers prepared through interfacial polymerization using different concentrations of HCl aqueous solution. The results were compared to those obtained by PANI prepared through the conventional route. X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques showed that high concentrations of HCl solutions used in the preparation of the PANI nanofibers reduce their crystallinity. The increase of regions with granular morphology was also observed in the scanning electron microscopy images. The changes in the resonance Raman spectra from 200 to 500 cm(-1), FTIR spectra, and the EPR data of the PANI nanofibers reveal an increase in the torsion angles of C-ring-N-C-ring segments owing the formation of bipolarons in the PANI backbone higher than the PANI samples prepared by conventional route.

A spectroscopic study was performed showing that the [Fe(III)(L(2-))(2)](1-) (L(2-) = dopacatecholate) complex reacts with Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) in an aqueous solution containing S(2)O(3)(2-) resulting in the soluble [M(L(1-))(3)](1-) (L(1-) = dopasemiquinone; M = Ni(II), Co(II) or Zn(II) complex species. The Raman and IR spectra of the [CTA][M(L(1-))(3)] complexes, CTA hexadecyltrimethylammonium cation, in the solid state were obtained. The kinetic constants for the metal substitution reactions were determined at four different temperatures, providing values for Delta W(not equal) Delta S(not equal) and Delta G(not equal). The reactions were slow (k = 10(-1)1 M s(-1)) and endothermic. The system investigated can be considered as a simplified model to explain some aspects of siderophore chemistry. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. Highly dispersed nanocomposites of polyaniline(PANI) and oxidized single wall carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) have been prepared using dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid as dispersant. The materials were characterized via resonance Raman and electronic absorption spectroscopies. The behavior of the composites as a function of the applied potential was also investigated using in situ Raman electrochemical measurements. The results obtained at E(laser) = 1.17 eV suggest that a charge-transfer process occur between PANI and semiconducting nanotubes for samples where the metallic tubes are previously oxidized. The spectroelectrochemical data show that the presence of SWNTs prevents the oxidation of PANI rings. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
