Following growth doping strategy and using dopant oxides nanocrystals as dopant sources, we report here two different transition-metal ions doped in a variety of group II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals. Using manganese oxide and copper oxide nanocrystals as corresponding dopant sources, intense photoluminescence emission over a wide range of wavelength has been observed for different host nanocrystals. Interestingly, this single doping strategy is successful in providing such highly emissive nanocrystals considered here, in contrast with the literature reports that would suggest synthesis strategies to be highly specific to the particular dopant, host, or both. We investigate and discuss the possible mechanism of the doping process, supporting the migration of dopant ions from dopant oxide nanocrystals to host nanocrystals as the most likely scenario.

Taking advantage of the degeneracy of the genetic code we have developed a novel approach to introduce, within a gene, DNA sequences capable of adopting unusual structures and to investigate the role of such sequences in regulation of gene expression in vivo. We used a computer program that generates alternative codon sequences for the same amino-acid sequence to convert a stretch of nucleotides into an inverted-repeat sequence with the potential to adopt cruciform structure. This approach was used to replace a 51-base-pair EcoRI-HindIII segment in the N-terminal region of the beta-galactosidase gene in plasmid pUC19 with a 51-bp synthetic oligonucleotide sequence with the potential to adopt a cruciform structure with 18 bp in the stem region. In selecting the 51-bp sequence, care was taken to include those codons that are preferred in E. coli. E. coli DH5-alpha cells harbouring the plasmid containing the redesigned sequence showed drastic reduction in expression of the beta-galactosidase gene compared to cells harbouring the plasmid with the native sequence. This approach demonstrates the possibility of introducing DNA secondary-structure elements to alter regulation of gene expression in vivo.

Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of Percoll purified Leydig cell proteins from 20- and 120-day-old rats revealed a significant decrease in a low molecular weight peptide in the adult rats. Administration of human chorionic gonadotropin to immature rats resulted in a decrease in the low molecular weight peptide along with increase in testosterone production. Modulation of the peptide by human chorionic gonadotropin could be confirmed by Western blotting. The presence of a similar peptide could be detected by Western blotting in testes of immature mouse, hamster, guinea pig but not in adrenal, placenta and corpus luteum. Administration of testosterone propionate which is known to inhibit the pituitary luteinizing hormone levels in adult rats resulted in an increase in the low molecular weight peptide, as checked by Western blotting. It is suggested that this peptide may have a role in regulation of acquisition of responsiveness to luteinizing hormone by immature rat Leydig cells.

The function of a protein in a cell often involves coordinated interactions with one or several regulatory partners. It is thus imperative to characterize a protein both in isolation as well as in the context of its complex with an interacting partner. High resolution structural information determined by X-ray crystallography and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance offer the best route to characterize protein complexes. These techniques, however, require highly purified and homogenous protein samples at high concentration. This requirement often presents a major hurdle for structural studies. Here we present a strategy based on co-expression and co-purification to obtain recombinant multi-protein complexes in the quantity and concentration range that can enable hitherto intractable structural projects. The feasibility of this strategy was examined using the sigma factor/anti-sigma factor protein complexes from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The approach was successful across a wide range of sigma factors and their cognate interacting partners. It thus appears likely that the analysis of these complexes based on variations in expression constructs and procedures for the purification and characterization of these recombinant protein samples would be widely applicable for other multi-protein systems. Zr doping in ceria (CeO2) results in enhanced static dielectric response compared to pure ceria. On the other hand, Ti doping in ceria keeps its dielectric constant unchanged. We use first-principles density functional theory calculations based on pseudopotentials and a plane wave basis to determine electronic properties and dielectric response of Zr/Ti-doped and oxygen-vacancy-introduced ceria. Softening of phonon modes is responsible for the enhancement in dielectric response of Zr-doped ceria compared to that of pure ceria. The ceria-zirconia mixed oxides should have potential use as high-k materials in the semiconductor industry. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An expression is developed for the variation of the critical solution temperature of a binary liquid system when a third component (dopant) is added, using an extension of the regular solution theory. The model can be used for UCST, LCST and for closed loop systems and has the correct features in the limiting cases.

The activity of glutamine synthetase isolated from the germinated seedlings of Phaseolus aureus was regulated by feedback inhibition by alanine, glycine, histidine, AMP, and ADP. When glutamate was the varied substrate, alanine, histidine, and glycine were partial noncompetitive, competitive, and mixed-type inhibitors, respectively. The type of inhibition by these amino acids was confirmed by fractional inhibition analysis. The adenine nucleotides, AMP and ADP, completely inhibited the enzyme activity and were competitive with respect to ATP. Multiple inhibition analyses revealed the presence of separate and nonexclusive binding sites for the amino acids and mutually exclusive sites for adenine nucleotides. Cumulative inhibition was observed with these end products.

X-ray absorption spectra at the oxygen K edge using the total yield technique are reported for YBa2Cu3O6.9 and YBa2Cu2.7Fe0.3O6.9. A comparison of the two spectra reveals that the mobile holes in YBa2Cu3O7-δ are removed and localized on Fe doping. Fe thus enters the lattice primarily in the formally trivalent oxidation state.
