We present extensive spectroscopic time series observations of the multiperiodic, rapidly rotating, delta Scuti star tau Pegasi. Information about the oscillations is contained within the patterns of line-profile variation of the star's blended absorption-line spectrum. We introduce the new technique of Doppler deconvolution with which to extract these patterns by modeling the intrinsic stellar spectrum and the broadening functions for each spectrum in the time series. Frequencies and modes of oscillation are identified from the variations using the technique of Fourier-Doppler imaging and a two-dimensional least-squares cleaning algorithm. We find a rich mode spectrum with degrees up to l = 20 and with frequencies below about 35 cycles day-1. Those modes with the largest amplitudes have frequencies that lie within a narrow band. We conclude that the observed spectrum can be explained if the modes of tau Peg propagate in the prograde direction with l ~= |m| and with frequencies that are about equal in the corotating frame of the star. We discuss the implications of these results for the prospect of delta Scuti seismology.

Obtaining as much particulate material as possible from questioned items is desirable in forensic science as this allows a range of analyses to be undertaken and the retention of material for others to check. A method of maximising particulate recovery is described using a kidnap case, where minimal staining on clothing (socks) remained as possible indications of where the victim had been held captive. Police intelligence led to a hostage scene that was sampled. Brushing of the socks recovered about 50 sand grains with some silt: ultrasonic agitation and centrifuging recovered over 300 grains of sand, silt and clay. These were visually compared to scene and control samples, allowing exclusion of 52 samples and the retention of one comparison sample as well as other possibles, saving time and money, but maximising sample quantity and quality. © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

The cure of polydicyclopentadiene conducted by ring-opening metathesis polymerisation in the presence of a Grubbs catalyst was studied using non-invasive Raman spectroscopy. The spectra of the monomer precursor and polymerised product were fully characterised and all stages of polymerisation monitored. Because of the monomer's high reactivity, the cure process is adaptable to reaction injection moulding and reactive rotational moulding. The viscosity of the dicyclopentadiene undergoes a rapid change at the beginning of the polymerisation process and it is critical that the induction time of the viscosity increase is determined and controlled for successful manufacturing. The results from this work show non-invasive Raman spectroscopic monitoring to be an effective method for monitoring the degree of cure, paving the way for possible implementation of the technique as a method of real-time analysis for control and optimisation during reactive processing. Agreement is shown between Raman measurements and ultrasonic time of flight data acquired during the initial induction period of the curing process. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Decreasing the constriction size and residence time in hydrodynamic cavitation is predicted to give increased hot spot temperatures at bubble collapse and increased radical formation rate. Cavitation in a 100 x 100 mu m(2) rectangular micro channel and in a circular 750 mu m diameter milli channel has been investigated with computational fluid dynamics software and with imaging and radical production experiments. No radical production has been measured in the micro channel. This is probably because there is no spherically symmetrical collapse of the gas pockets in the channel which yield high hot spot temperatures. The potassium iodide oxidation yield in the presence of chlorohydrocarbons in the milli channel of up to 60 nM min(-1) is comparable to values reported on hydrodynamic cavitation in literature, but lower than values for ultrasonic cavitation. These small constrictions can create high apparent cavitation collapse frequencies.

Indicator inks, previously shown to be capable of rapidly assessing photocatalytic activity via a novel photo-reductive mechanism, were simply applied via an aerosol spray onto commercially available pieces of Activ (TM) self-cleaning glass. Ink layers could be applied with high evenness of spread, with as little deviation as 5% upon UV-visible spectroscopic assessment of 25 equally distributed positions over a 10 cm x 10 cm glass cut. The inks were comprised of either a resazurin (Rz) or dichloroindophenol (DCIP) redox dye with a glycerol sacrificial electron donor in an aqueous hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) polymer media. The photo-reduction reaction under UVA light of a single spot was monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy and digital images attained from a flat-bed scanner in tandem for both inks. The photo-reduction of Rz ink underwent a two-step kinetic process, whereby the blue redox dye was initially reduced to a pink intermediate resorufin (Rf) and subsequently reduced to a bleached form of the dye. In contrast, a simple one-step kinetic process was observed for the reduction of the light blue redox dye DCIP to its bleached intermediates. Changes in red-green-blue colour extracted from digital images of the inks were inversely proportional to the changes seen at corresponding wavelengths via UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and wholly indicative of the reaction kinetics. The photocatalytic activity areas of cuts of Activ (TM) glass, 10 cm x 10 cm in size, were assessed using both Rz and DCIP indicator inks evenly sprayed over the films: firstly using UVA lamp light to activate the underlying Activ (TM) film (1.75 mW cm(-2)) and secondly under solar conditions (2.06 +/- 0.14 mW cm(-2)). The photo-reduction reactions were monitored solely by flat-bed digital scanning. Red-green-blue values of a generated 14 x 14 grid (196 positions) that covered the entire area of each film image were extracted using a Custom-built program entitled RGB Extractor(C). A homogenous degradation over the 196 positions analysed for both Rz (Red colour deviation = 19% UVA, 8% Solar: Green colour deviation = 17% UVA, 12% Solar) and DCIP (Red colour deviation = 22% UVA, 16% Solar) inks was seen in both UVA and solar experiments, demonstrating the consistency of the self-cleaning titania layer on Activ (TM). The method presented provides a good solution for the high-throughput photocatalytic screening of a number of homogenous photocatalytically active materials simultaneously or numerous positions on a single film; both useful in assessing the homogeneity of a film or determining the best combination of reaction components to produce the optimum performance photocatalytic film. The kinetics of dye reduction, in photocatalyst indicator ink films on self cleaning glass, is studied with respect to dye concentration. The water-based, photocatalyst indicator inks comprised a redox dye, D-ox, a sacrificial electron donor (glycerol) and a polymer, hydroxyethyl cellulose. The dyes used were: Resazurin (Rz), dichloroindo-phenol (DCIP) and methylene blue (MB), although the latter required acidification of the ink (0.01M HCl) to make it work effectively under ambient conditions. Under anaerobic conditions, the photoreduction of each of the dyes, in an otherwise identical ink formulation, on Activ (TM) self-cleaning glass is zero-order with respect to [D-ox]. Seven commercial samples of Rz, each in a typical ink formulation, were tested on the same piece of self-cleaning glass under aerobic conditions and produced a striking range (over 280%) of different apparent activities for the glass, when there should have been none. The underlying cause of this variation in assessed activity is shown to be due to the combination of a variation in the purity of the commercial samples and the zero-order nature of the kinetics of indicator dye reduction. The relevance of this work and the latter observation, in particular to future use of these films for the rapid assessment of the activities of new and established photocatalytic films, is briefly discussed.

This article reports the behaviour of three photocatalyst indicator inks, based on the redox dyes: methylene blue (NIB), resorufin (Rf) and 2,6-dichloroindophenol (DCIP), and assess their performance in comparison to the pioneering resazurin (Rz)-based ink for the rapid assessment of the activity of very thin, photocatalyst films, such as Activ (TM) self-cleaning glass. From a commercial 'demonstrator of photocatalysis' perspective, all three redox dyes appear more attractive compared to Rz since all generate colourless products in the ink formulation when photoreduced on Activ (TM) under anaerobic conditions, whereas, the reduced product from Rz, the redox dye resorufin, Rf. is pink in colour. However, the ink based on Rf is far too slow to effect the rapid measurement of photocatalytic activity even in the absence of oxygen, and in the presence of oxygen the latter inhibits the overall kinetics of photoreduction by re-oxidising the reduced product, dihydroresorufin, HRf, back to Rf. Similarly, despite the attractive rapid rate of photobleaching for NIB under anaerobic conditions, compared to the other redox dyes, the reduced product of the MB-based ink. leuco-MB, is so oxygen-sensitive that the ink cannot be photoreduced under aerobic conditions, thus rendering the ink unsuitable for use in the field. The DCIP-based ink is slightly less easy to photoreduce under both anaerobic and ambient atmospheric conditions compared to the Rz-based ink. However. in addition to its more attractive colour change, the DCIP-based ink is unaffected by the ambient level of oxygen present (%O-2) and the relative humidity (%RH), whereas, for the Rz-based ink, both parameters effect the photoreduction kinetics. By incorporating the DCIP ink into a felt-tipped pen, the ink is suitable for use in the laboratory and field to perform not only a qualitative test, but also to allow a semi-quantitative analysis of photocatalytic activity by eye. The continuing interest in semiconductor photochemistry, SPC, and the emergence of commercial products that utilise films of photocatalyst materials, has created an urgent need to agree a set of methods for assessing photocatalytic activity and international committees are now meeting to address this issue. This article provides a brief overview of two of the most popular current methods employed by researchers for assessing SPC activity. and one which has been published just recently and might gain popularity in the future, given its ease of use. These tests are: the stearic acid (SA) test, the methylene blue (MB) test and the resazurin (Rz) ink test, respectively. The basic photochemical and chemical processes that underpin each of these tests are described, along with typical results for laboratory made sol-gel titania films and a commercial form of self-cleaning glass, Activ (TM). The pros and cons of their future use as possible standard assessment techniques are considered. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Robust, active, anatase titania films, 250 nm thick, are deposited onto glass at low temperatures, i.e., 2.0 for the photocatalytic mineralization of stearic acid. These films are typically 6.9 times more active than a sample of commercial self-cleaning glass, comprising a 15 nm layer of fitania deposited by CVD, mainly because they are much thicker and, therefore, absorb more of the incident UV light. The most active of the films tested comprised particles of P25, but lacked any significant physical robustness. Similar results, but much more quickly obtained, were generated using a photocatalyst- sensitive ink, based on the redox dye, resazurin, Rz. All fitania films tested, including those produced by magnetrom sputtering exhibited photo-induced superhydrophilicity. The possible future application of PAR-DG-MS for producing very active photocatalytic films on substrates not renowned for their high temperature stabilities, such as plastics, is noted. A controlled-atmosphere chamber, combined with a CCTV system, is used to monitor continuously the change in shape of water droplets on the self-cleaning commercial glass, Activ, and a sol-gel TiO2 substrate during their irradiation with either UVA or UVC light. This system allows the photoinduced superhydrophilic effect (PSH) exhibited by these materials to be studied in real time under a variety of different conditions. UVA was less effective than UVC in terms of PSH for both titania-coated glasses, and plain glass was unaffected by either form of UV irradiation and so showed no PSH activity. With UVA, ozone increased significantly the rate of PSH for both substrates, but had no effect on the wettability of plain glass. For both titania substrates and plain glass, no PSH activity was observed under an O-2-free atmosphere. A more detailed study of the PSH effect exhibited by Activ revealed that doping the water droplet with either an electron acceptor (Na2S2O8), electron donor (Na2S2O4), or simple electrolyte (KCl) in the absence of oxygen did not promote PSH. However, when Activ was UV irradiated, while immersed in a deoxygenated KCl solution, prior to testing for PSH activity, only a small change in contact angle was observed, whereas under the same conditions, but using a deoxygenated persulfate-containing immersion solution, it was rendered superhydrophilic. The correlation between organic contaminant removal and surface wetting was also investigated by using thick sol-gel films coated with stearic acid; the destruction of SA was monitored by FTIR and sudden wetting of the surface was seen to coincide with the substantial removal of the organic layer. The results of this work are discussed in the context of the current debate on the underlying cause of PSH.

Thick paste TiO2 films are prepared and tested for photocatalytic and photoinduced superhydrophilic (PSH) activity. The films are effective photocatalysts for the destruction of stearic acid using near or far UV and all the sol-gel films tested exhibited a quantum yield for this process of typically 0.15 %. These quantum yields are significantly greater (4-8-fold) than those for titania films produced by an APCVD technique, including the commercial self-cleaning glass product Activ(TM). The films are mechanically robust and optically clear and, as photocatalysts for stearic acid removal, are photochemically stable and reproducible. The kinetics of stearic acid photomineralisation are zero order with an activation energy of ca. 2.5 Kj mol(-1). All titania films tested, including those produced by APCVD, exhibit PSH. The light-induced fall, and dark recovery, in the water droplet contact angle made with titania paste films are similar in profile shape to those described by others for thin titania films produced by a traditional sol-gel route. Pilkington Glass Activ(TM) represents a possible suitable successor to P25 TiO2, especially as a benchmark photocatalyst film for comparing other photocatalyst or PSH self-cleaning films. Activ(TM) is a glass product with a clear, colourless, effectively invisible, photocatalytic coating of titania that also exhibits PSH. Although not as active as a film of P25 TiO2, Activ(TM) vastly superior mechanical stability, very reproducible activity and widespread commercial availability makes it highly attractive as a reference photocatalytic film. The photocatalytic and photo-induced superhydrophilitic (PSH) properties of Activ(TM) are studied in some detail and the results reported. Thus, the kinetics of stearic acid destruction (a 104 electron process) are zero order over the stearic acid range 4-129 monolayers and exhibit formal quantum efficiencies (FQE) of 0.7 X 10(-5) and 10.2 x 10(-5) molecules per photon when irradiated with light of 365 +/- 20 and 254 nm, respectively; the latter appears also to be the quantum yield for Activ(TM) at 254 nm. The kinetics of stearic acid destruction exhibit Langmuir-Hinshelwood-like saturation type kinetics as a function of oxygen partial pressure, with no destruction occurring in the absence of oxygen and the rate of destruction appearing the same in air and oxygen atmospheres. Further kinetic work revealed a Langmuir adsorption type constant for oxygen of 0.45 +/- 0.16 kPa(-1) and an activation energy of 19 +/- 1 Kj mol(-1). A study of the PSH properties of Activ(TM) reveals a high water contact angle (67) before ultra-bandgap irradiation reduced to 0degrees after prolonged irradiation. The kinetics of PSH are similar to those reported by others for sol-gel films using a low level of UV light. The kinetics of contact angle recovery in the dark appear monophasic and different to the biphasic kinetics reported recently by others for sol-gel films [J. Phys. Chem. B 107 (2003) 1028]. Overall, Activ(TM) appears a very suitable reference material for semiconductor film photocatalysis. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V All rights reserved.

The initial rate of oxidation of octan-2-ol and other secondary alcohols to their ketones with NaBrO3, mediated by RuO4 in an aqueous-CCl4 biphasic system, is greater with ultrasonic irradiation than by stirring alone. Under ultrasonic irradiation the initial rate of oxidation of octan-2-ol increases with increasing % duty cycle, [RuO4] and [NaBrO3]. The kinetics of alcohol oxidation appear to be closely linked with the oxidative dissolution of RuO2 to RuO4 by NaBrO3. The observed enhancement in rate with ultrasonic irradiation appear to be association, at least in part, with the increase in interfacial surface area via the formation of an emulsion of aqueous microdroplets containing NaBrO3 in the CCl4 layer containing the non-water-soluble secondary alcohol.

Ultrasound promotes the reduction of hexacyanoferrate(III) by thiosulfate ions mediated by RuO2 . xH(2)O under diffusion-controlled conditions. There is a strong correlation between the measured first-order rate constant and the absorbance of the dispersion, which, in turn, is closely related to the specific surface area of the catalyst. The enhancement in rate with ultrasonic irradiation appears to be largely associated with the dispersive action of the ultrasound on the aggregated particles of RuO2 . xH(2)O. The rate of reaction increases with increasing %duty cycle and ultrasonic intensity. The measured overall activation energies for the reaction with and without ultrasound, i.e. 18 +/- 1 and 20 +/- 1 kJ mol(-1), respectively, are very similar to those expected for a diffusion-controlled reaction. The homogeneous reaction is not promoted by ultrasound.

The cidal activities of aqueous taurolidine (2.0% w/v containing 5.0% wlv polyvinylpyrrolidone as a solubilising agent) and alcoholic taurolidine (2.0% w/v dissolved in Isopropyl alcohol 50% v/v) against spores of Bacillus subtilis NCTC 10073 were evaluated at 20 degrees C, 37 degrees C, 45 degrees C and 55 degrees C. Increased temperature increased both the rate and extent of sporicidal activity of both solutions. Total spore kill was not observed in either solution type over the range of temperatures and contact times examined. There were no observed differences between the sporicidal activities of aqueous and alcoholic taurolidine solutions at all temperatures examined. Ultrasonic energy (50 Hz operating frequency in a 150 W ultrasonic bath in conjunction with increasing temperature allowed to rise naturally from ambient temperature to 41 degrees C over 4 h) enhanced the sporicidal activities of both solution types. However, the difference in activity between the two solution types was not significant. Compared to normal spores, alteration of spore coat layers (hydrogen-form spores) did not alter spore susceptibility to aqueous taurolidine at elevated temperatures of 37 degrees C and 55 degrees C.
