Experimental fishing operations with shark long lines were conducted in the sea off Veraval with a view to studying their efficiency and gathering information on the available resources of sharks to be used for planning the future gear investigations. The trials were undertaken in 1967, employing departmental fishing vessel "Fishtech No. IV" (10.9 m O.L. and 48 H.P. engine). A total of 5525 hooks were employed and 242 sharks weighing 8629 kg were landed. Data on composition of catch, weight of fishes landed, effectiveness of various baits in capture of different species of sharks and effectiveness of gear including its catch efficiency in this area were compiled. Bait preference was also observed in certain species of sharks caught. Chirocentrus dorab proved to be the cheapest and most effective bait in capture of all the three varieties of sharks landed.

Comprehensive computer modelling has been used to investigate the dependence of dispersion penalty on transmission length in an optical communications system employing a directly modulated 2.5Gbit/s DFB laser source and an optimised fibre grating dispersion compensator. Two grating apodization schemes, tanh and Gaussian, have been compared. The 2dB dispersion penalty transmission distance is shown to be approximately 520km along standard monomode fibre after compensation with a 5cm tanh grating. This represents a great improvement over the 150km range expected for a similar uncompensated system.

The performance of 40 Gbit/s optical time-division multiplexed (OTDM) communication systems can be severely limited when the extinction ratio of the optical pulses is low. This is a consequence of the coherent interference noise between individual OTDM channels. When taken alone, the multiple quantum well-distributed feedback laser+dispersion compensating fiber source exhibits a relatively poor extinction ratio which impairs its potential for use in a 40 Gbit/s OTDM system. However, with the addition of an electroabsorption modulator to suppress the pulse pedestals to better than 30 dB extinction, coherent interference noise is reduced, the bit-error-rate performance is greatly improved, and the source shows good potential for 40 Gbit/s OTDM communication.

This paper demonstrates how a finite element model which exploits domain decomposition is applied to the analysis of three-phase induction motors. It is shown that a significant gain in cpu time results when compared with standard finite element analysis. Aspects of the application of the method which are particular to induction motors are considered: the means of improving the convergence of the nonlinear finite element equations; the choice of symmetrical sub-domains; the modelling of relative movement; and the inclusion of periodic boundary conditions. © 1999 IEEE.

In this paper a recently published finite element method, which combines domain decomposition with a novel technique for solving nonlinear magnetostatic finite element problems is described. It is then shown how the method can be extended to, and optimised for, the solution of time-domain problems. © 1999 IEEE.

A combination of multilevel coding schemes and simple two-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) at 1300 and 1550 nm was used to transmit an aggregate of 10 Gbit/s over 300 m of multimode fiber that is typical of that employed in current Local Area Networks (LANs). It was shown that this technique could be a simple solution for achieving 10 Gigabit ethernet links over installed multimode fiber building backbones.

The use of two different subcarriers at frequencies up to 5.5 GHz each transmitting 1 Gbit/s over 500 m of multimode fiber (MMF) is demonstrated. By transmitting the two subcarrier channels simultaneously alongside the baseband signal, an aggregate bit rate of 2.8 Gbit/s is possible.

This analysis is concerned with the calculation of the elastic wave transmission coefficients and coupling loss factors between an arbitrary number of structural components that are coupled at a point. A general approach to the problem is presented and it is demonstrated that the resulting coupling loss factors satisfy reciprocity. A key aspect of the method is the consideration of cylindrical waves in two-dimensional components, and this builds upon recent results regarding the energetics of diffuse wavefields when expressed in cylindrical coordinates. Specific details of the method are given for beam and thin plate components, and a number of examples are presented. © 2002 Acoustical Society of America.

The operation of dynamical systems in harsh environments requires continuous monitoring. Internal sensors may be used to monitor the conditions in real time. A typical example is the sensor and electronic components used in space structures which, especially during launch, are subject to huge g force. The paper will present an experimental and theoretical study on a simplified model used to analyze the possible cause of high acceleration on the enclosed sensors and equipments due to impulsive loading. The model system consists of two beams coupled using compliant connections. An impulse hammer excites one beam, and vibrations are transmitted to the indirectly driven beam. A theoretical model is developed using a Rayleigh-Ritz approach and validated using experimental results in both the frequency and time domains. Monto Carlo simulation was done with random masses positioned on the indirectly driven beam to determine the worst-case conditions for maximum peak acceleration. Highest acceleration levels were found when mode matching in the two beams led to veering behavior in the coupled modes. The results suggest guidelines for the detailed design of internal components of a structure exposed to shock loading from its environment. Histo-blood group antigens CD173 (H2) and CD174 (Lewis Y) are known to be developmentally regulated carbohydrate antigens which are expressed to a varying degree on many human carcinomas. We hypothesized that they might represent markers of cancer-initiating cells (or cancer stem cells, CSC). In order to test this hypothesis, we examined the co-expression of CD173 and CD174 with stem cell markers CD44 and CD133 by flow cytometry analysis, immunocytochemistry, and immunohistochemistry on cell lines and tissue sections from breast cancer. In three breast cancer cell lines, the percentage of CD173(+)/CD44(+) cells ranged from 17% to > 60% and of CD174(+)/CD44(+) from 21% to 57%. In breast cancer tissue sections from 15 patients, up to 50% of tumor cells simultaneously expressed CD173, CD174, and CD44 antigens. Co-expression of CD173 and CD174 with CD133 was also observed, but to a lesser percentage. Co-immunoprecipitation and sandwich ELISA experiments on breast cancer cell lines suggested that CD173 and CD174 are carried on the CD44 molecule. The results show that in these tissues CD173 (H2) and CD174 (LeY) are associated with CD44 expression, suggesting that these carbohydrate antigens are markers of cancer-initiating cells or of early progenitors of breast carcinomas.

Hither to comprehensive data on the various types of baits used for capture of predatory fish and selective action of different hooks for bottom-drift-long lines is conspicuous by its absence. In the present studies attempts were made to evaluate the effectiveness of three types of baits and four sizes of hooks. Significant results obtained during the course of these investigations are presented in this communication.
