This paper analyzes through Multiple Scales Method a response of a simplified nonideal and nonlinear vibrating system. Here, one verifies the interactions between the dynamics of the DC motor (excitation) and the dynamics of the foundation (spring, damper, and mass). We remarked that we consider cubic nonlinearity (spring) and quadratic nonlinearity (DC motor) of the same order of magnitude according to experimental results. Both analytical and numerical results that we have obtained had good agreement.

This paper deals with the effects of hair coat characteristics on the sweating rate of Brazilian Braford cows and estimation of heritabilities and genetic correlations of these traits. Data (n=1607) on hair length, coat thickness, hair diameter, number of hairs per unit area, coat reflectance and sweating rate were recorded from heifers and cows of a commercial herd managed on range under extensive system. The data were analyzed considering the following effects on the model for hair coat traits: classes of sires and contemporary groups; linear effects of month and genotype; linear and quadratic effects of age. The effect of sire was important (P<0.05) for all hair coat traits, except for number of hairs; contemporary groups affected (P<0.05) all hair coat traits; the effect of sampling month was important (P<0.05) for hair length and reflectance; genotype affected (P<0.05) hair length, diameter and coat reflectance; the quadratic effect of age was important (P<0.05) only for coat reflectance. Two models were used to analyze the sweating rate. The first model considered the following fixed effects: classes of contemporary groups and sires; linear effect of genotype, coat thickness, hair length, hair diameter, number of hairs, coat reflectance; linear and quadratic effects of time of day, age, air temperature, partial vapour pressure and radiant heat load. The second model used for the sweating rate considered the same fixed effects for the first model, except that the hair coat characteristics were adjusted for important effects used in the models to analyze hair coat traits. All meteorological factors and contemporary groups were important (P<0.05) on variation of sweating rate in both models. The Restricted Maximum. Likelihood (REML) method was used to estimate variance and covariance components under the sire model. Results included heritability estimates in narrow (h(2)) and broad (H) sense for single-trait analyzes: hair thickness (h(2)=0.16; H-2=0.26); hair length (h(2)=0.18; H-2=0.39); number of hairs (h(2)=0.08 +/- 0.07; H-2=0.08 +/- 0.07); hair diameter (h(2)=0.12 +/- 0.07; H-2=0.12 +/- 0.07); coat reflectance (h(2)=0.30; H-2=0.42); and sweating rate (h(2)=0.10 +/- 0.07; H-2=0.10 +/- 0.07). In general, the genetic correlations between the adaptive traits were favorable as for the direction to select for adaptation in tropical environment; however, they presented high standard errors. The results of this study imply that hair coat characteristics and sweating ability are important for the adaptability to heat stress and they must be better studied and further considered for selection for genetic progress of adaptation in tropical environment. We derive the current algebra of supersymmetric principal chiral models with a Wess-Zumino term. At the critical point one obtains two commuting super-affine Lie algebras as expected, but, in general, them are intertwining fields connecting both right and left sectors, analogously to the bosonic case. Moreover, in the present supersymmetric extension we have a quadratic algebra, rather than an affine Lie algebra, due to the mixing between bosonic and fermionic fields; the purely fermionic sector displays an affine Lie algebra as well.

The construction of a q-deformed N = 2 superconformal algebra is proposed in terms of level-1 currents of the U-q(<(su)over cap>(2)) quantum affine Lie algebra and a single real Fermi field. In particular, it suggests the expression for the q-deformed energy-momentum tensor in the Sugawara form. Its constituents generate two isomorphic quadratic algebraic structures. The generalization to U-q(<(su)over cap>(N + 1)) is also proposed.

A greenhouse study was conducted to determine the number of microbial populations and activities in sewage sludge and phosphate fertilizer-amended dark red latosoil for cultivation of tomato plants. Sewage sludge was applied at doses of 0, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 t ha(-1), and phosphate (P2O5) at doses of 0, 100, 200, 400 and 800 kg ha(-1). The bacterial populations increased as a function of sewage sludge and phosphate application. Fungal populations were not affected by the application of phosphate alone but were increased by the application of sewage sludge. Phosphate doses higher than 100-200 kg ha(-1) in combination with sewage sludge inhibited both bacterial and fungal growth. The responses determined by microbial counts were reflected in the microbial biomass values, with a more significant effect of sewage sludge than of phosphate or of a combination of both. These results confirm the need for a carbon and energy source (represented here by sewage sludge) for microbial growth in a soil poor in organic matter. Dehydrogenase and urease activities reflected the results of the microbial populations due to the effect of sewage sludge and phosphate, but no satisfactory result was obtained for phosphatase. Urease activity was expressed by a linear regression equation as the result of the effect of sewage sludge, and by a quadratic regression equation as the result of the effect of phosphate. All parameters investigated showed a significant correlation with bacterial counts but not with fungal counts, indicating a greater effect of sewage sludge and phosphate on bacteria than on fungi.

We consider arbitrary U (1) charged matter non-minimally coupled to the self-dual field in d = 2 + 1. The coupling includes a linear and a rather general quadratic term in the self-dual field. By using both Lagragian gauge embedding and master action approaches we derive the dual Maxwell Chern-Simons-type model and show the classical equivalence between the two theories. At the quantum level the master action approach in general requires the addition of an awkward extra term to the Maxwell Chern-Simons-type theory. Only in the case of a linear coupling in the self-dual field can the extra term be dropped and we are able to establish the quantum equivalence of gauge invariant correlation functions in both theories.

Genetic parameters for the relation between the traits of milk yield (MY), age at first calving (AFC) and interval between first and second calving (IBFSC) were estimated in milk buffaloes of the Murrah breed. In the study, data of 1578 buffaloes at first lactation, with calvings from 1974 to 2006 were analyzed. The MTDFREML system was used in the analyses with models for the MY, IBFSC traits which included the fixed effects of herd-year-season of calving, linear and quadratic terms of calving age as covariate and the random animal effects and error. The model for AFC consisted of the herd-year-season fixed effects of calving and the random effects of animal and error. Heritability estimates MY, AFC and IBFSC traits were 0.20, 0.07 and 0.14, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between the traits were: MY and AFC = -0.12 and -0.15, MY and IBFSC = 0.07 and 0.30, AFC and IBFSC = 0.35 and 0.37, respectively. Genetic correlation between MY and AFC traits showed desirable negative association, suggesting that the daughters of the bulls with high breeding value for MY could be physiological maturity to a precocious age. Genetic correlation between MY and IBFSC showed that the selection of the animals that increased milk yield is also those that tend to intervals of bigger calving.

Economic Dispatch (ED) problems have recently been solved by artificial neural networks approaches. In most of these dispatch models, the cost function must be linear or quadratic. Therefore, functions that have several minimum points represent a problem to the simulation since these approaches have not accepted nonlinear cost function. Another drawback pointed out in the literature is that some of these neural approaches fail to converge efficiently towards feasible equilibrium points. This paper discusses the application of a modified Hopfield architecture for solving ED problems defined by nonlinear cost function. The internal parameters of the neural network adopted here are computed using the valid-subspace technique, which guarantees convergence to equilibrium points that represent a solution for the ED problem. Simulation results and a comparative analysis involving a 3-bus test system are presented to illustrate efficiency of the proposed approach.

The kidding intervals (IDP) of dairy goats raised in Southeastern Brazil were studied to quantify the influence of environmental factors and to estimate genetic parameters by means of least squares (MMQ) and restricted maximum likelihood (REML). The data analyzed were obtained from five farms and three breeds (Alpine, Saanen, and Toggenburg). The overall mean and standard error of IDP, as estimated by MMQ, were 339 +/- 12.70 days. The interaction of year x season of parturition influenced IDP. In two of the years studied, goats kidding at the end of the kidding season showed a shorter IDP when compared to those that were kidding after the end of the season. A quadratic trend of IDP over years was observed across the three kidding periods. For the three seasons. IDP increased from 1986 until mid-1989 and decreased thereafter. The heritability and repeatability of IDP, as estimated by MMQ and REML, were: 0.046 +/- 0.071 and 0.103 +/- 0.043, and 0.00026 and 0.08411, respectively. These estimates indicate that little genetic gain can be expected from selection for this trait.

In greenhouse trials, copper hydroxide, pyraclostrobin, and famoxadone were applied to actively crowing young citrus seedlings to determine the duration of protection of young leaves provided by these fungicides against melanose, caused by Diaporthe citri, citrus scab, caused by Elsinoe fawcettii, and Alternaria brown spot, caused by Alternaria alternata. Fungicides were applied to different sets of potted plants of grapefruit for control of melanose, of rough lemon for control of scab, and of Dancy tangerine for control of Afternaria brown spot 1 to 6 days prior to inoculation. as well as on the day of inoculation. Leaf area of treated shoots was estimated on the day of fungicide application and the day of inoculation and disease severity evaluated subsequently. In most cases. copper hydroxide and famoxadone provided at least 50% control of all three diseases for only about 2 days after application. Generally, there was little or no disease control when the products were applied 4 or more days before inoculation. In contrast, pyraclostrobin usually provided a high level of control of all three diseases when applied up to 5 days prior to inoculation. The level of disease control decreased as the interval between a fungicide application and inoculation increased and the relationship between disease control and leaf expansion best fit a quadratic equation. Effective disease control was observed with copper hydroxide and famoxadone until leaf area had increased by 100 to 200%, whereas control with pyraclostrobin was observed up to 400 to 500% increase in leaf area. In postinoculation tests with scab and melanose, pyraclostrobin provided high levels of disease control (>75%) when applied up to 2 days after inoculation. whereas copper hydroxide and famoxadone had minimal postinoculation activity. Applications of pyraclostrobin to the spring flush growth of citrus trees are much more likely to provide control of melanose, scab, and Alternaria brown spot than those of famoxadone or copper hydroxide.
