The oxygen potentials corresponding to fayalite-quartz-iron (FQI) and fayalite-quartz-magnetite (FQM) equilibria have been determined using solid-state galvanic cells: Pt,Fe + Fe2SiO4 + SiO2/(Y2O3)ZrO2/Fe + \r"FeO,\l"Pt and Pt, Fe3O4 + Fe2SiO4 + SiO2/(Y2O3)ZrO2/Ni + NiO, Pt in the temperature ranges 900 to 1400 K and 1080 to 1340 K, respectively. The cells are written such that the right-hand electrodes are positive. Silica used in this study had the quartz structure. The emf of both cells was found to be reversible and to vary linearly with temperature. From the emf, Gibbs energy changes were deduced for the reactions: 0.106Fe (s) + 2Fe0.947O (r.s.) + SiO2 (qz) → Fe2SiO4 (ol) δG‡= -39,140+ 15.59T(± 150) J mol-1 and 3Fe2SiO4 (ol) + O2 (g) → 2Fe3O4 (sp) + 3SiO2 (qz) δG‡ = -471,750 + 160.06 T±} 1100) J mol-1 The “third-law≓ analysis of fayalite-quartz-wustite and fayalite-quartz-magnetite equilibria gives value for δH‡298 as -35.22 (±0.1) and -528.10 (±0.1) kJ mol-1, respectively, independent of temperature. The Gibbs energy of formation of the spinel form of Fe2SiO4 is derived by com-bining the present results on FQI equilibrium with the high-pressure data on olivine to spinel transformation of Fe2SiO4.

The human resource (HR) function is under pressure both to change roles and to play a large variety of roles. Questions of change and development in the HR function become particularly interesting in the context of mergers and acquisitions when two corporations are integrated. The purpose of the thesis is to examine the roles played by the HR function in the context of large-scale mergers and thus to understand what happens to the HR function in such change environments, and to shed light on the underlying factors that influence changes in the HR function. To achieve this goal, the study seeks first to identify the roles played by the HR function before and after the merger, and second, to identify the factors that affect the roles played by the HR function. It adopts a qualitative case study approach including ten focal case organisations (mergers) and four matching cases (non-mergers). The sample consists of large corporations originating from either Finland or Sweden. HR directors and members of the top management teams within the case organisations were interviewed. The study suggests that changes occur within the HR function, and that the trend is for the HR function to become increasingly strategic. However, the HR function was found to play strategic roles only when the HR administration ran smoothly. The study also suggests that the HR function has become more versatile. An HR function that was perceived to be mainly administrative before the merger is likely after the merger to perform some strategically important activities in addition to the administrative ones. Significant changes in the roles played by the HR function were observed in some of the case corporations. This finding suggests that the merger integration process is a window of opportunity for the HR function. HR functions that take a proactive and leading role during the integration process might expand the number of roles played and move from being an administrator before the merger to also being a business partner after integration. The majority of the HR functions studied remained mainly reactive during the organisational change process and although the evidence showed that they moved towards strategic tasks, the intra-functional changes remained comparatively small in these organisations. The study presents a new model that illustrates the impact of the relationship between the top management team and the HR function on the role of the HR function. The expectations held by the top management team for the HR function and the performance of the HR function were found to interact. On a dimension reaching from tactical to strategic, HR performance is likely to correspond to the expectations held by top management.

For p x n complex orthogonal designs in k variables, where p is the number of channels uses and n is the number of transmit antennas, the maximal rate L of the design is asymptotically half as n increases. But, for such maximal rate codes, the decoding delay p increases exponentially. To control the delay, if we put the restriction that p = n, i.e., consider only the square designs, then, the rate decreases exponentially as n increases. This necessitates the study of the maximal rate of the designs with restrictions of the form p = n+1, p = n+2, p = n+3 etc. In this paper, we study the maximal rate of complex orthogonal designs with the restrictions p = n+1 and p = n+2. We derive upper and lower bounds for the maximal rate for p = n+1 and p = n+2. Also for the case of p = n+1, we show that if the orthogonal design admit only the variables, their negatives and multiples of these by root-1 and zeros as the entries of the matrix (other complex linear combinations are not allowed), then the maximal rate always equals the lower bound.

We propose two texture-based approaches, one involving Gabor filters and the other employing log-polar wavelets, for separating text from non-text elements in a document image. Both the proposed algorithms compute local energy at some information-rich points, which are marked by Harris' corner detector. The advantage of this approach is that the algorithm calculates the local energy at selected points and not throughout the image, thus saving a lot of computational time. The algorithm has been tested on a large set of scanned text pages and the results have been seen to be better than the results from the existing algorithms. Among the proposed schemes, the Gabor filter based scheme marginally outperforms the wavelet based scheme.

The thermal decomposition of lanthanum biscitrato chromium(III) dihydrate has been studied in static air and dynamic argon atmospheres. The complex decomposes in four steps: dehydration, decomposition of the citrate to an intermediate oxycarbonate, formation of LaCrO4(V) from oxycarbonate, and finally decomposition of LaCrO4(V) to LaCrO3. Formation of LaCrCrO4(V) requires the presence of oxygen The decomposition behaviour of a mechanical mixture of lanthanum citrate hydrate and chromium citrate hydrate was compared with that of the citrato complex. Both the starting material and the intermediates were characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR electronic and ESR spectroscopy, surface area and magnetic susceptibility measurements, as well as by chemical analysis. A scheme is proposed for the decomposition of lanthanum biscitrato chromium(III) dihydrate in air. LaCrO3 can be obtained at temperatures as low as 875 K by isothermal decomposition of the complex.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. The unprecedented absence of direct metal–nucleotide interaction has been observed in the X-ray structure of the ternary metal nucleotide system [Cu(bzim)(H2O)5]2+[IMP]2–·3H2O [IMP = inosine 5-monophosphate(2–), bzim = benzimidazole). The complex crystallizes in the space group P21 with a= 7.013(2), b= 13.179(9), c= 14.565(9)Å, = 94.82(4)°, and Z= 2. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by full-matrix least squares on the basis of 1 761 observed (I? 3i) reflections to final R and R values of 0.034 and 0.036 respectively. The CuII has a distorted octahedral co-ordination with a nitrogen of the bzim ligand [Cu–N 1.947(5)Å] and three oxygens of water molecules in the basal plane [mean Cu–O 2.017(3)Å] and two more water oxygens at axial positions [Cu–O 2.194(6) and 2.732(5)Å]. The nucleotide base stacks with the bzim ligand at an average distance of 3.5 Å and an angle of 22°. In the lattice, N(7) of the base is linked to a lattice water through a hydrogen bond, while all the phosphate oxygens are involved in hydrogen bonds with co-ordinated as well as lattice water molecules. The co-ordination behaviour of IMP to CuII is compared in structures containing different -aromatic amines in order to assess the influence of the ternary ligand in complex formation. The present results indicate that, apart from the commonly observed phosphate binding, other modes of co-ordination are possible, these being influenced mainly by the -accepting properties of the ternary ligand.

The dielectric response of pulsed laser ablated barium strontium titanate thin films were studied as a function of frequency and ambient temperature (from room temperature to 320 degrees C) by employing impedance spectroscopy. Combined modulus and impedance spectroscopic plots were used to study the response of the film, which in general may contain the grain, grain boundary, and the electrode/film interface as capacitive elements. The spectroscopic plots revealed that the major response was due to the grains, while contributions from the grain boundary or the electrode/film interface was negligible. Further observation from the complex impedance plot showed data points lying on a single semicircle, implying the response originated from a single capacitive element corresponding to the bulk grains. Conductivity plots against frequency at different temperatures suggested a response obeying the 'universal power law'. The value of the activation energies computed from the Arrhenius plots of both ac and dc conductivities with 1000/T were 0.97 and 1.04 eV, respectively. This was found to be in excellent agreement with published literature, and was attributed to the motion of oxygen vacancies within the bulk. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. The modes of binding of alpha- and beta-anomers of D-galactose, D-fucose and D-glucose to L-arabinose-binding protein (ABP) have been studied by energy minimization using the low resolution (2.4 A) X-ray data of the protein. These studies suggest that these sugars preferentially bind in the alpha-form to ABP, unlike L-arabinose where both alpha- and beta-anomers bind almost equally. The best modes of binding of alpha- and beta-anomers of D-galactose and D-fucose differ slightly in the nature of the possible hydrogen bonds with the protein. The residues Arg 151 and Asn 232 of ABP from bidentate hydrogen bonds with both L-arabinose and D-galactose, but not with D-fucose or D-glucose. However in the case of L-arabinose, Arg 151 forms hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl group at the C-4 atom and the ring oxygen, whereas in case of D-galactose it forms bonds with the hydroxyl groups at the C-4 and C-6 atoms of the pyranose ring. The calculated conformational energies also predict that D-galactose is a better inhibitor than D-fucose and D-glucose, in agreement with kinetic studies. The weak inhibitor D-glucose binds preferentially to one domain of ABP leading to the formation of a weaker complex. Thus these studies provide information about the most probable binding modes of these sugars and also provide a theoretical explanation for the observed differences in their binding affinities.
