Despite its extreme aridity the Badain Jaran Desert is rich in groundwater. In the southeastern part of this desert it is characterized by coexistence of high megadunes and a great number of lakes. Deuterium and oxygen 18 isotope compositions as well as hydrochemistry of groundwater, lake water, soil water and river water were investigated in detail to gain an insight into their relationships and the origin of the groundwater. The results show that the groundwater and the lake water are genetically related, but unrelated to local precipitation and the leakage of Heine River at the northern slope of the Qilian mountain. dD and d18O values of deep soil water (deeper than 40 cm) and groundwater plot on the same evaporation line E11, which shows that they have the same recharge source. The point of intersection between E11 and LMWL suggests that the groundwater originates from a water resource, which has a weighted mean value that is lighter by some 6 per mil d18O than local precipitation in Badain Jaran Desert. 3H data of water samples show that the groundwater in the Badain Jaran Desert originates from water recharged after the nuclear test. The deep fault zone underground maybe a water circulation channel based on helium analysis of groundwater. The result has guiding significance to rational exploitation and utilization of the local groundwater.

Results of studies in two biogeochemically active zones of the Atlantic Ocean (the Benguela upwelling waters and the region influenced by the Congo River run-off) are reported in the book. A multidisciplinary approach included studies of the major elements of the ocean ecosystem: sea water, plankton, suspended matter, bottom sediments, interstitial waters, aerosols, as well as a wide complex of oceanographic studies carried out under a common program. Such an approach, as well as a use of new methodical solutions led to obtaining principally new information on different aspects of oceanology.

The argillite sequence located at the base of the sedimentary cover on the continental slope of the Sea of Japan was studied by petrographic, palynological, and X-ray diffraction methods. Two spores-pollen complexes were distinguished in it: the Late Oligocene reflecting cooling and the Early Miocene corresponding to initiated warming. Data obtained indicate that the sequence is composed of terrigenous silty-clayey sediments that accumulated in shallow coastal-marine settings. The global sea-level rise at the Early-Middle Miocene transition, combined with regional tectonic processes, determined basin's deepening, owing to which the argillite sequence was overlain by a thick layer of Middle Miocene diatomaceous-clayey sediments. Due to tectonic movement along existing faults in the terminal Late Miocene, the argillite sequence occurring initially at depths of at least 400-500 m was locally exhumed to the basin bottom.

Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 66 drilled eight sites along a transect across the Middle America Trench off Mexico, including continental (Sites 493 and 489), oceanic (Site 487), and trench (Site 486) reference sites and four sites (490, 492, 491, 488) in the trench inner wall. Because of their location - close to volcanic sources and subject to prevailing winds and marine currents (N to S, NW to SE) - analysis of airborne ashes intercalated within the sediments at these sites provides a reliable record of explosive volcanism in the area. Intense onshore volcanic activity in Mexico during the Oligo-Miocene has been well documented by the andesites and ignimbrites of the Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre del Sur and in the Plio-Quaternary by the andesites and basalts from the Trans-Mexican Neovolcanic Belt and the eastern border of Baja California.

Paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic analyses from discrete samples of carbonate sites on the Queensland Plateau were used to determine magnetic polarity reversal stratigraphy and the nature of magnetization in these sediments. Magnetic polarity zones were correlated with the geomagnetic polarity time scale in the upper portions of cores at Sites 812 through 814, usually back to a late Pliocene age. Loss of reliable directional data was coincidental with a major decrease in magnetic intensity, below which, no stable polarity zones could be identified. The intensity reduction is either an in-situ alteration of magnetic grains, or an input signal representing progressive increase in the magnetic component of Queensland Plateau sediments. Although not conclusive at this point, the geochemical conditions and differing age of intensity reduction support the former hypothesis. Rock-magnetic analysis of carbonate sediments suggests that ultrafine-grained magnetite or maghemite crystals is an important carrier of remanence and may be biogenic in origin. Application of a recently calibrated anhysteretic remanent magnetization test to assess configuration of single-domain crystal within a natural matrix indicates that cementation (ooze-chalk-limestone) may be important in post-depositional changes affecting magnetostatic grain interaction.

We investigated the magnetic and paleomagnetic properties of 77 basalt samples from Holes 482, 482C, 482D, 483, 483B, 485, and 485A in order to study the structure and development of the ocean's crust. During the course of this study, we measured the natural remanent magnetization, Jn, and its stability in an alternating magnetic field; the magnetic susceptibility, x; the saturation magnetization, Js; the saturation remanent magnetization, Jrs; the coercivity of maximum remanence, HCR; and the median destructive fields MDFn (for Jn) and MDFs for Jrs. A thermomagnetic analysis for Js and Jrs was also performed; these latter measurements were made on the same samples.

The monograph summarizes materials on geology and deep structure of the Central Atlantic fracture zones. These materials have been obtained during eight expeditions of R/V ''Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov''. The studies have been based on the integrated geological approach. As a result, many new tectonic, magmatic, metallogenic and historical-geological features of these phenomenal structures of the deep ocean have been revealed.

Basalts recovered on DSDP Leg 92 include all the major basalt types so far recovered from the ocean crust of the eastern Pacific. Basalts from Holes 597, 597A, 597B, 597C, and 599B are tholeiites exhibiting all the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of N-type mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). Fragments of ferrobasalts and alkali basalts were also obtained, however, from Holes 60IB and 602B, respectively. Hole 597C, which penetrated 91 m into basement and is the deepest hole so far drilled in fast-spreading crust, yielded basalts that can be divided into three major lithologic units. The lowest unit, Unit III, contains modal olivine and comprises basalts which, at about 8 to 10% MgO, are as basic as any sampled from fast-spreading crust. The middle unit, Unit II, is the most evolved; its basalts are olivine free and contain between 6 and 7.5% MgO. The upper unit, Unit I, is intermediate in composition between Units II and III; it is characterized by both modal olivine and glomerocrysts made up of plagioclase and rare olivine. Unit I is probably a massive flow, whereas Units II and III may be massive flows or sills. The basalts appear to have undergone three stages of alteration ("deuteric," "relatively reducing," and "oxidizing"), the intensity of alteration decreasing markedly downcore. Hole 597B, at 26.4 m of basement penetration the only other "deep" hole, contains just one lithologic unit, which closely resembles Unit I of Hole 597C. Petrogenetic modeling reveals that the three lithologic units in Hole 597C are cogenetic and that they were derived from a depleted mantle source similar to the source of the tholeiites and ferrobasalts sampled in other holes; the alkali basalts are the only rocks derived from enriched mantle. Lavas of Unit III probably lay on the olivine-plagioclase cotectic, whereas the other lavas lay on an olivine-plagioclase-clinopyroxene peritectic. Some 60% of closed-system crystallization is needed to generate the most-evolved from the last-fractionated tholeiite, and a further 50% crystallization (80% overall) is needed to generate the ferrobasalts. Xenocrysts of calcic plagioclase and pseudomorphosed olivine in tholeiites from Hole 597B and Unit I of Hole 597C, and in the ferrobasalts from Hole 601B, provide evidence, however, that some magma mixing may have taken place.
