In this paper we consider C1 vector fields X in R3 having a “generalized heteroclinic loop” L which is topologically homeomorphic to the union of a 2–dimensional sphere S2 and a diameter connecting the north with the south pole. The north pole is an attractor on S2 and a repeller on . The equator of the sphere is a periodic orbit unstable in the north hemisphere and stable in the south one. The full space is topologically homeomorphic to the closed ball having as boundary the sphere S2. We also assume that the flow of X is invariant under a topological straight line symmetry on the equator plane of the ball. For each n ∈ N, by means of a convenient Poincar´e map, we prove the existence of infinitely many symmetric periodic orbits of X near L that gives n turns around L in a period. We also exhibit a class of polynomial vector fields of degree 4 in R3 satisfying this dynamics.

A HeLa cell nuclear transcription extract that is approximately 20 times more efficient than standard HeLa cell transcription extracts was developed. Transcription of the strong adenovirus II major late promoter by this extract results in the synthesis of 1.5-4 molecules of product RNA per molecule of template, indicating that the extract is capable of multiple rounds of initiation. Standard HeLa cell nuclear extracts transcribe closed circular and linear adenovirus major late promoter templates with equal efficiency. In contrast, the new extract exhibits an increase of approximately twofold on transcription of a closed circular, as opposed to a linear, major late promoter template.

This paper highlights the role of non-functional information when reusing from a component library. We describe a method for selecting appropriate implementations of Ada packages taking non-functional constraints into account; these constraints model the context of reuse. Constraints take the form of queries using an interface description language called NoFun, which is also used to state non-functional information in Ada packages; query results are trees of implementations, following the import relationships between components. We define two different situations when reusing components, depending whether we take the library being searched as closed or extendible. The resulting tree of implementations can be manipulated by the user to solve ambiguities, to state default behaviours, and by the like. As part of the proposal, we face the problem of computing from code the non-functional information that determines the selection process.

In this work we propose a method to quantify written signatures from digitalized images based on the use of Elliptical Fourier Descriptors (EFD). As usually signatures are not represented as a closed contour, and being that a necessary condition in order to apply EFD, we have developed a method that represents the signatures by means of a set of closed contours. One of the advantages of this method is that it can reconstruct the original shape from all the coefficients, or an approximated shape from a reduced set of them finding the appropriate number of EFD coefficients required for preserving the important information in each application. EFD provides accurate frequency information, thus the use of EFD opens many possibilities. The method can be extended to represent other kind of shapes.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for approximately 4,100 bridges and structures that are a part of the state’s primary highway system, which includes the Interstate, US, and Iowa highway routes. A pilot study was conducted for six bridges in two Iowa river basins—the Cedar River Basin and the South Skunk River Basin—to develop a methodology to evaluate their vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather. The six bridges had been either closed or severely stressed by record streamflow within the past seven years. An innovative methodology was developed to generate streamflow scenarios given climate change projections. The methodology selected appropriate rainfall projection data to feed into a streamflow model that generated continuous peak annual streamflow series for 1960 through 2100, which were used as input to PeakFQ to estimate return intervals for floods. The methodology evaluated the plausibility of rainfall projections and credibility of streamflow simulation while remaining consistent with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) protocol for estimating the return interval for floods. The results were conveyed in an innovative graph that combined historical and scenario-based design metrics for use in bridge vulnerability analysis and engineering design. The pilot results determined the annual peak streamflow response to climate change likely will be basin-size dependent, four of the six pilot study bridges would be exposed to increased frequency of extreme streamflow and would have higher frequency of overtopping, the proposed design for replacing the Interstate 35 bridges over the South Skunk River south of Ames, Iowa is resilient to climate change, and some Iowa DOT bridge design policies could be reviewed to consider incorporating climate change information.

We systematically varied conditions of two-dimensional (2D) agarose gel electrophoresis to optimize separation of DNA topoisomers that differ either by the extent of knotting, the extent of catenation or the extent of supercoiling. To this aim we compared electrophoretic behavior of three different families of DNA topoisomers: (i) supercoiled DNA molecules, where supercoiling covered the range extending from covalently closed relaxed up to naturally supercoiled DNA molecules; (ii) postreplicative catenanes with catenation number increasing from 1 to ∼15, where both catenated rings were nicked; (iii) knotted but nicked DNA molecules with a naturally arising spectrum of knots. For better comparison, we studied topoisomer families where each member had the same total molecular mass. For knotted and supercoiled molecules, we analyzed dimeric plasmids whereas catenanes were composed of monomeric forms of the same plasmid. We observed that catenated, knotted and supercoiled families of topoisomers showed different reactions to changes of agarose concentration and voltage during electrophoresis. These differences permitted us to optimize conditions for their separation and shed light on physical characteristics of these different types of DNA topoisomers during electrophoresis.

La recerca aborda la situació penitenciària de regressió a segon grau d’una persona classificada en tercer grau de tractament. Aquesta recerca neix de la dada que a Catalunya el retorn esglaonat a la comunitat (a partir del tercer grau o de la llibertat condicional) no és la forma habitual en què les persones condemnades extingeixen la condemna sinó que resulta més comú la finalització en segon grau. Aquesta realitat resulta preocupant ja que existeix una evidència científica favorable al retorn esglaonat com un sistema amb més probabilitats d’aconseguir la reinserció de la persona. La recerca parteix de que un dels factors que explica aquesta taxa baixa de finalització de la condemna en tercer grau o en llibertat condicional és justament la regressió a segon grau. Acceptat aquest fet, els objectius de la recerca consisteixen en valorar si el nostre sistema penitenciari fa un ús restringit de la regressió i en explorar si es poden identificar les causes que expliquen que una vegada que s’ha produït la regressió sigui difícil reprendre el procés de reinserció a la comunitat. Per dur a terme la recerca s’ha pres com a població de referència les persones que van patir una regressió a segon grau a Catalunya durant l’any 2011 i que finalitzen la seva condemna entre l’1 de juliol i el 31 de desembre del 2012. Això dóna una població de 52 persones. S’ha procedit a estudiar els expedients penitenciaris d’aquestes persones i s’ha aconseguit entrevistar al 75% d’elles. La recerca posa de manifest que la nostra pràctica de regressió es troba encara allunyada d’un model garantista i rehabilitador, indica algunes raons que expliquen la dificultat de recuperar el tercer grau o la llibertat condicional una vegada regressat i finalment s’assenyalen un conjunt de recomanacions o bones pràctiques.

La investigación aborda la situación penitenciaria de regresión a segundo grado de una persona clasificada en tercer grado de tratamiento. Esta investigación nace del dato de que en Cataluña el retorno escalonado a la comunidad (a partir del tercer grado o de la libertad condicional) no es la forma habitual en que las personas condenadas extinguen la condena, sino que resulta más común la finalización en segundo grado. Esta realidad resulta preocupante ya que existe una evidencia científica favorable al retorno escalonado como un sistema con más probabilidades de lograr la reinserción de la persona. La investigación parte de que uno de los factores que explica esta baja tasa de finalización de la condena en tercer grado o en libertad condicional es justamente la regresión a segundo grado. Aceptado este hecho, los objetivos de la investigación consisten en valorar si nuestro sistema penitenciario hace un uso restringido de la regresión y en explorar si se pueden identificar las causas que explican que una vez que se ha producido la regresión sea difícil retomar el proceso de reinserción en la comunidad. Para llevar a cabo la investigación se ha tomado como población de referencia a las personas que sufrieron una regresión a segundo grado en Cataluña durante el año 2011 y que finalizaron su condena entre el 1 de julio y el 31 de diciembre de 2012. Esto da una población de 52 personas. Se ha procedido a estudiar los expedientes penitenciarios de estas personas y se ha conseguido entrevistar al 75% de ellas. La investigación pone de manifiesto que nuestra práctica de regresión se encuentra todavía alejada de un modelo garantista y rehabilitador, indica algunas razones que explican la dificultad de recuperar el tercer grado o la libertad condicional una vez regresado y finalmente se señalan un conjunto de recomendaciones o buenas prácticas.

The objective of this work was to study the foraging behavior of Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) in the presence of stimuli from its host, Euschistus heros (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). The stimuli selected were: egg mass; virgin males and females; volatile extracts of sexually mature males and females; components of male sex pheromone; a component of the alarm pheromone, hexane and an empty cage as control. In a closed arena, the parasitoids were given the choice between single and combined stimuli presented to them simultaneously. To find the host egg, T. podisi primarily uses the sensory cues released from the male insects. The orientation toward odors of male chemical extract indicates that a source of kairomone was detected. Gas chromatographic analyses of this substance showed peak of methyl 2,6,10-trimethyltridecanoate, the main component of male sexual pheromone. The sensory response to methyl 2,6,10-trimethyltridecanoate confirms that this compound may act as a kairomone to find host eggs. Females and egg mass stimuli were weakly attractive to the parasitoid.

The objective of this work was to determine the viability equation constants for cottonseed and to detect the occurrence and depletion of hardseededness. Three seedlots of Brazilian cultivars IAC-19 and IAC-20 were tested, using 12 moisture content levels, ranging from 2.2 to 21.7% and three storage temperatures, 40, 50 and 65ºC. Seed moisture content level was reached from the initial value (around 8.8%) either by rehydration, in a closed container, or by drying in desiccators containing silica gel, both at 20ºC. Twelve seed subsamples for each moisture content/temperature treatment were sealed in laminated aluminium-foil packets and stored in incubators at those temperatures, until complete survival curves were obtained. Seed equilibrium relative humidity was recorded. Hardseededness was detected at moisture content levels below 6% and its releasing was achieved either naturally, during storage period, or artificially through seed coat removal. The viability equation quantified the response of seed longevity to storage environment well with K E = 9.240, C W = 5.190, C H = 0.03965 and C Q = 0.000426. The lower limit estimated for application of this equation at 65ºC was 3.6% moisture content.

New plate-tectonic reconstructions of the Gondwana margin suggest that the location of Gondwana-derived terranes should not only be guided by the models, but should also consider the possible detrital input from some Asian blocks (Hunia), supposed to have been located along the Cambrian Gondwana margin, and accreted in the Silurian to the North-Chinese block. Consequently, the Gondwana margin has to be subdivided into a more western domain, where the future Avalonian blocks will be separated from Gondwana by the opening Rheic Ocean, whereas in its eastern continuation, hosting the future basement areas of Central Europe, different periods of crustal extension should be distinguished. Instead of applying a rather cylindrical model, it is supposed that crustal extension follows a much more complex pattern, where local back-arcs or intra-continental rifts are involved. Guided by the age data of magmatic rocks and the pattern of subsidence curves, the following extensional events can be distinguished: During the early to middle Cambrian, a back-arc setting guided the evolution at the Gondwana margin. Contemporaneous intra-continental rift basins developed at other places related to a general post-PanAfrican extensional phase affecting Africa Upper Cambrian formation of oceanic crust is manifested in the Chamrousse area, and may have lateral cryptic relics preserved in other places. This is regarded as the oceanisation of some marginal basins in a context of back-arc rifting. These basins were closed in a mid-Ordovician tectonic phase, related to the subduction of buoyant material (mid-ocean ridge?) Since the Early Ordovician, a new phase of extension is observed, accompanied by a large-scale volcanic activity, erosion of the rift shoulders generated detritus (Armorican Quartzite) and the rift basins collected detrital zircons from a wide hinterland. This phase heralded the opening of Palaeotethys, but it failed due to the Silurian collision (Eo-Variscan phase) of an intra-oceanic arc with the Gondwana margin. During this time period, at the eastern wing of the Gondwana margin begins the drift of the future Hunia microcontinents, through the opening of an eastern prolongation of the already existing Rheic Ocean. The passive margin of the remaining Gondwana was composed of the Galatian superterranes, constituents of the future Variscan basement areas. Remaining under the influence of crustal extension, they will start their drift to Laurussia since the earliest Devonian during the opening of the Palaeotethys Ocean. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. We investigated a new procedure for gene transfer into the stroma of pig cornea for the delivery of therapeutic factors. A delimited space was created at 110 mum depth with a LDV femtosecond laser in pig corneas, and a HIV1-derived lentiviral vector expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) (LV-CMV-GFP) was injected into the pocket. Corneas were subsequently dissected and kept in culture as explants. After 5 days, histological analysis of the explants revealed that the corneal pockets had closed and that the gene transfer procedure was efficient over the whole pocket area. Almost all the keratocytes were transduced in this area. Vector diffusion at right angles to the pocket's plane encompasses four (endothelium side) to 10 (epithelium side) layers of keratocytes. After 21 days, the level of transduction was similar to the results obtained after 5 days. The femtosecond laser technique allows a reliable injection and diffusion of lentiviral vectors to efficiently transduce stromal cells in a delimited area. Showing the efficacy of this procedure in vivo could represent an important step toward treatment or prevention of recurrent angiogenesis of the corneal stroma.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that the presence of mesoscopic heterogeneities constitutes an important seismic attenuation mechanism in porous rocks. As a consequence, centimetre-scale perturbations of the rock physical properties should be taken into account for seismic modelling whenever detailed and accurate responses of specific target structures are desired, which is, however, computationally prohibitive. A convenient way to circumvent this problem is to use an upscaling procedure to replace each of the heterogeneous porous media composing the geological model by corresponding equivalent visco-elastic solids and to solve the visco-elastic equations of motion for the inferred equivalent model. While the overall qualitative validity of this procedure is well established, there are as of yet no quantitative analyses regarding the equivalence of the seismograms resulting from the original poro-elastic and the corresponding upscaled visco-elastic models. To address this issue, we compare poro-elastic and visco-elastic solutions for a range of marine-type models of increasing complexity. We found that despite the identical dispersion and attenuation behaviour of the heterogeneous poro-elastic and the equivalent visco-elastic media, the seismograms may differ substantially due to diverging boundary conditions, where there exist additional options for the poro-elastic case. In particular, we observe that at the fluid/porous-solid interface, the poro- and visco-elastic seismograms agree for closed-pore boundary conditions, but differ significantly for open-pore boundary conditions. This is an important result which has potentially far-reaching implications for wave-equation-based algorithms in exploration geophysics involving fluid/porous-solid interfaces, such as, for example, wavefield decomposition.

OBJECTIVES: Prospective evaluation of tracheo-carinal airway reconstructions using pedicled extrathoracic muscle flaps for closing airway defects after non-circumferential resections and after carinal resections as part of the reconstruction for alleviation of anastomotic tension. METHODS: From January 1996 to June 2006, 41 patients underwent tracheo-carinal airway reconstructions using 45 extrathoracic muscle flaps (latissimus dorsi, n=25; serratus anterior, n=18; pectoralis major, n=2) for closing airway defects resulting from (a) bronchopleural fistulas (BPF) with short desmoplastic bronchial stumps after right upper lobectomy (n=1) and right-sided (pleuro) pneumonectomy (n=13); (b) right (n=9) and left (n=3) associated with partial carinal resections for pre-treated centrally localised tumours; (c) partial non-circumferential tracheal resections for pre-treated tracheal tumours, tracheo-oesophageal fistulas (TEF) and chronic tracheal injury with tracheomalacia (n=11); (d) carinal resections with the integration of a muscle patch in specific parts of the anastomotic reconstruction for alleviation of anastomotic tension (n=4). The airway defects ranged from 2 x 1 cm to 8 x 4 cm and involved up to 50% of the airway circumference. The patients were followed by clinical examination, repeated bronchoscopy, pulmonary function testing and CT scans. The minimum follow-up time was 6 months. RESULTS: Ninety-day mortality was 7.3% (3/41 patients). Four patients (9.7%) sustained muscle flap necrosis requiring re-operation and flap replacement without subsequent mortality, airway dehiscence or stenosis. Airway dehiscence was observed in 1/41 patients (2.4%) and airway stenosis in 1/38 surviving patients (2.6%) responding well to topical mitomycin application. Follow-up on clinical grounds, by CT scans and repeated bronchoscopy, revealed airtight, stable and epithelialised airways and no recurrence of BPF or TEF in all surviving patients. CONCLUSIONS: Tracheo-carinal airway defects can be closed by use of pedicled extrathoracic muscle flaps after non-circumferential resections and after carinal resections with the muscle patch as part of the reconstruction for alleviation of anastomotic tension.

Tracheobronchial aspergillosis is a rare entity mainly observed in immune-compromised patients or those who have undergone transplantation. It may cause airway ulcerations or bleeding. We report the case of a 17-year-old patient receiving chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia who presented with right-sided tension pneumothorax. Chest tube drainage revealed a massive air leak without reexpansion of the lung, and bronchoscopy showed a 15- × 15-mm defect of the distal trachea related to aspergillosis infection. The defect was closed by an intrathoracic transposition of a pedicled latissimus dorsi muscle flap, which was sutured into the debrided defect followed by temporary endotracheal stenting and antifungal medication.
