The purpose of this work is to increase ecological understanding of Avicennia germinans L. and Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. F. growing in hypersaline habitats with a seasonal climate. The area has a dry season (DS) with low temperature and vapour pressure deficit (vpd), and a wet season (WS) with high temperature and slightly higher vpd. Seasonal patterns in interstitial soil water salinity suggested a lack of tidal flushing in this area to remove salt along the soil profile. The soil solution sodium/potassium (Na+/K+) ratio differed slightly along the soil profile during the DS, but during the WS it was significantly higher at the soil surface. Diurnal changes in xylem osmolality between predawn (higher) and midday (lower) were observed in both species. However, A. germinans had higher xylem osmolality compared to L. racemosa. Xylem Na+/K+ suggested higher selectivity of K+ over Na+ in both species and seasons. The water relations parameters derived from pressure–volume P–V curves were relatively stable between seasons for each species. The range of water potentials (Ψ), measured in the field, was within estimated values for turgor maintenance from P–V curves. Thus the leaves of both species were osmotically adapted to maintain continued water uptake in this hypersaline mangrove environment.

Central America is one of the most vulnerable regions to the adverse effects of climate change, due to the rise of frequency and intensity that hydrometeorological phenomena have occurred in recent years. In El Salvador 484 people died and 800,000 more were affected because these extreme events and economic losses reached up to 6.711 million dollars. According to the climate projections over the next 50 years in the territory, is expected that extreme events such as droughts and rainfall will intensify. Within the last 30 years, July of 2014 is considered the one with less rainfall. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression 12E in 2011 provoked an outstanding rainfall average of 1,137 mm, affecting more than 500,000 people; most of them live in the coastal zone. The death of 34 people and living economic losses of 840.4 million was recorded, equivalent to 4% of GDP. El Salvador has policies, national plans and strategies aimed to reducing vulnerability, promoting adaptation to these changes and more effective risk management. This paper compiles the impacts of climate variability in El Salvador and the efforts of the State on adaptation to improve environmental and social resilience.

Beach sands from the Rosa Marina locality (Adriatic coast, southern Italy) were analysed mainly microscopically in order to trace the source areas of their lithoclastic and bioclastic components. The main cropping out sedimentary units were also studied with the objective to identify the potential source areas of lithoclasts. This allowed to establish how the various rock units contribute to the formation of beach sands. The analysis of the bioclastic components allows to estimate the actual role of organisms regarding the supply of this material to the beach. Identification of taxa that are present in the beach sands as shell fragments or other remains was carried out at the genus or family level. Ecologi- cal investigation of the same beach and the recognition of sub-environments (mainly distinguished on the basis of the nature of the substrate and of the water depth) was the key topic that allowed to establish the actual source areas of bioclasts in the Rosa Marina beach sands. The sedimentological analysis (including a physical study of the beach and the calculation of some statistical parameters concerning the grain-size curves) shows that the Rosa Marina beach is nowadays subject to erosion.
