Text analytics of social media: Sentiment analysis, event detection and summarization

In the last decade, large numbers of social media services have emerged and been widely used in people's daily life as important information sharing and acquisition tools. With a substantial amount of user-contributed text data on social media, it becomes a necessity to develop methods and tools for text analysis for this emerging data, in order to better utilize it to deliver meaningful information to users. ^ Previous work on text analytics in last several decades is mainly focused on traditional types of text like emails, news and academic literatures, and several critical issues to text data on social media have not been well explored: 1) how to detect sentiment from text on social media; 2) how to make use of social media's real-time nature; 3) how to address information overload for flexible information needs. ^ In this dissertation, we focus on these three problems. First, to detect sentiment of text on social media, we propose a non-negative matrix tri-factorization (tri-NMF) based dual active supervision method to minimize human labeling efforts for the new type of data. Second, to make use of social media's real-time nature, we propose approaches to detect events from text streams on social media. Third, to address information overload for flexible information needs, we propose two summarization framework, dominating set based summarization framework and learning-to-rank based summarization framework. The dominating set based summarization framework can be applied for different types of summarization problems, while the learning-to-rank based summarization framework helps utilize the existing training data to guild the new summarization tasks. In addition, we integrate these techneques in an application study of event summarization for sports games as an example of how to better utilize social media data. ^

O objectivo deste relat��rio �� efectuar uma reflex��o fundamentada sobre a pr��tica pedag��gica desenvolvida ao longo do ano lectivo 2009/201O. Conclus��es: O Modelo de planeamento por etapas �� aquele que mais favorece a aprendizagem dos alunos. No ensino dos jogos desportivos colectivos, o modelo teaching games for understanding assume-se como uma alternativa ��s abordagens tradicionais centradas na t��cnica. Informa����o aumentada dirigida para um foco externo parece dar origem a uma melhor aprendizagem. As aulas de Educa����o F��sica n��o est��o a conseguir dar o contributo necess��rio para a obten����o dos n��veis recomendados de actividade f��sica. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this report is to conduct a reasoned discussion about the pedagogical practice developed during the academic year 2009/201O. The investigative dimension is present throughout the report and is linked to the reflection on the work that was undertaken in schools. Throughout this report the following topics are highlighted: planning models, teaching physical and sporting activities, teacher's skills, health promotion, evaluation, participation in school, and professional development. Conclusions: The model of "planning steps" is one most conducive to student learning. ln collective sports games, the teaching games for understanding model is assumed as an alternative to traditional approaches focused on the critical components of each motor skill. The use of an externa! focus of attention appears to lead to better learning. lt seems that Physical Education classes are failing to provide the levels of physical activity recommended for young people.

Social media and niche sports: The netball ANZ championship and commonwealth games on twitter

This article analyses and compares Twitter activity for the niche sport of netball over the 2013 trans-Tasman ANZ Championship competition and the international Commonwealth Games event in 2014. Patterns within the Twitter data that were discovered through an analysis of the 2013 ANZ Championship season are considered in terms of the Commonwealth Games, and thus compared between a quasi-domestic and an international context. In particular, we highlight the extent to which niche sports such as netball attempt to capitalise on the opportunities provided by social media, and the challenges involved in coordinating event-specific hashtags, such as the #netball2014 hashtag promoted by the Commonwealth Games Federation.
