Our understanding of how the visual system processes motion transparency, the phenomenon by which multiple directions of motion are perceived to co-exist in the same spatial region, has grown considerably in the past decade. There is compelling evidence that the process is driven by global-motion mechanisms. Consequently, although transparently moving surfaces are readily segmented over an extended space, the visual system cannot separate two motion signals that co-exist in the same local region. A related issue is whether the visual system can detect transparently moving surfaces simultaneously, or whether the component signals encounter a serial â??bottleneckâ?? during their processing? Our initial results show that, at sufficiently short stimulus durations, observers cannot accurately detect two superimposed directions; yet they have no difficulty in detecting one pattern direction in noise, supporting the serial-bottleneck scenario. However, in a second experiment, the difference in performance between the two tasks disappears when the component patterns are segregated. This discrepancy between the processing of transparent and non-overlapping patterns may be a consequence of suppressed activity of global-motion mechanisms when the transparent surfaces are presented in the same depth plane. To test this explanation, we repeated our initial experiment while separating the motion components in depth. The marked improvement in performance leads us to conclude that transparent motion signals are represented simultaneously.

Germanium MOS capacitors have been fabricated with a high-? HfO dielectric using ALD. An in-situ low temperature (250°C) nitrogen plasma treatment on the germanium surface prior to the deposition of HfO was found to be beneficial to the electrical properties of the devices. Germanium MOS capacitors have also been fabricated with a SiO dielectric deposited by an atmospheric pressure CVD 'silox' process. The same low temperature plasma nitridation was found to degrade the electrical properties of the silox devices. The effect of a post-metal anneal in H and N on both types of capacitor structure was also found to degrade device electrical properties. copyright The Electrochemical Society.

An effective ellipsometric technique to determine parameters that characterize second-harmonic optical and magneto-optical effects in centrosymmetric media within the electric-dipole approximation is proposed and outlined in detail. The parameters, which are ratios of components of the nonlinear-surface-susceptibility tensors, are obtained from experimental data related to the state of polarization of the second-harmonic-generated radiation as a function of the angle between the plane of incidence and the polarization plane of the incident, linearly polarized, fundamental radiation. Experimental details of the technique are described. A corresponding theoretical model is given as an example for a single isotropic surface assuming polycrystalline samples. The surfaces of air-Au and air-Ni (in magnetized and demagnetized states) have been investigated ex situ in ambient air, and the results are presented. A nonlinear, least-squares-minimization fitting procedure between experimental data and theoretical formulas has been shown to yield realistic, unambiguous results for the ratios corresponding to each of the above materials. Independent methods for verifying the validity of the fitting parameters are also presented. The influence of temporal variations at the surfaces on the state of polarization (due to adsorption, contamination, or oxidation) is also illustrated for the demagnetized air-Ni surface. The structure and properties of the interfaces between the room temperature ionic liquid dimethylimidazolium chloride ([dmim]Cl) and different Lennard-Jones fluids and between ionic liquid and water have been studied by molecular dynamics simulations, and compared to the ionic liquid-vapour interface. Two contrasting types of interface were investigated, thermodynamically stable interfaces between ionic liquid and vapour and between ionic liquid and Lennard-Jones fluids, and diffusing interfaces between miscible phases of different compositions involving water. The density profiles of different species through the interface are presented. The cations and water molecules near the former type of interface are aligned relative to the surface, but no orientational preference was found near or in the broad diffusing interface. The ionic liquid has a negative electrostatic potential relative to vapour or Lennard-Jones fluid, but is more positive than pure water. This contrast is explained in terms of the relative importance of orientation and concentration differences in the two types of interface.

The sense of vision is people’s main source of information acquisition, hence the importance of a right diagnosis and correction, if necessary, of any faults for proper learning, especially in the early years of schooling. This article discusses the results of a survey of teachers in Andalusian schools that aimed at highlighting their knowledge of their students’ possible visual deficiencies, and its possible impact on school performance. The results indicate that such knowledge is generally limited to the type of refractive anomalies, and that they think that such anomalies are well treated in their students. Despite the importance they attach to these deficiencies on school learning, they think that other factors may have a greater role. They also consider that better training on this topic is necessary.

Now you see it, now you don't: A specially designed reactor that heats only a small area of Pd foil during a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling permits observation of the surface changes during the reaction. Dissolution of Pd occurs only in the heated zone, and only in the presence of aryl iodide, whereas deposition of Pd occurs preferentially on the unheated zones adjacent to the reactive zone. SEM and XPS are employed to probe the surface before and after reaction.
