In order to predict compressive strength of geopolymers prepared from alumina-silica natural products, based on the effect of Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2, Na 2 O/Al 2 O 3, Na 2 O/H 2 O, and Na/[Na+K], more than 50 pieces of data were gathered from the literature. The data was utilized to train and test a multilayer artificial neural network (ANN). Therefore a multilayer feedforward network was designed with chemical compositions of alumina silicate and alkali activators as inputs and compressive strength as output. In this study, a feedforward network with various numbers of hidden layers and neurons were tested to select the optimum network architecture. The developed three-layer neural network simulator model used the feedforward back propagation architecture, demonstrated its ability in training the given input/output patterns. The cross-validation data was used to show the validity and high prediction accuracy of the network. This leads to the optimum chemical composition and the best paste can be made from activated alumina-silica natural products using alkaline hydroxide, and alkaline silicate. The research results are in agreement with mechanism of geopolymerization.

To get a better insight into the radiological features of industrial by-products that can be reused in building materials a review of the reported scientific data can be very useful. The current study is based on the continuously growing database of the By-BM (H2020-MSCA-IF-2015) project (By-products for Building Materials). Currently, the By-BM database contains individual data of about 431 by-products and 1095 building and raw materials. It was found that in case of the building materials the natural radionuclide content varied widely (Ra-226: <DL-27851 Bq/kg; Th-232: <DL-906 Bq/kg, K-40: <DL-17922 Bq/kg), more so than for the by-products (Ra-226: 7-3152 Bq/kg; Th-232: <DL-1350 Bq/kg, K-40: <DL-3001 Bq/kg). The average Ra-226, Th-232 and K-40 contents of the reported by-products were respectively 2.52, 2.35 and 0.39 times higher than the building materials. The gamma exposure of bulk building products was calculated according to IAEA Specific Safety Guide No. SSG-32 and the European Commission Radiation Protection 112 based I-index (EU BSS). It was found that in most cases the I-index without density consideration provides a significant overestimation in excess effective dose.

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) was asked by the Department of Health and the Food Standards Agency to examine the latest evidence on the links between consumption of carbohydrates, sugars, starch and fibre and a range of health outcomes (such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, bowel health and tooth decay) to ensure the government’s position on consumption was up-to-date. In addition to the main report, you can read the SACN press release In its review of the evidence, SACN found that: High levels of sugar consumption are associated with a greater risk of tooth decay. The higher the proportion of sugar in the diet, the greater the risk of high energy intake. Drinking high-sugar beverages results in weight gain and increases in BMI in teenagers and children. Consuming too many high-sugar beverages increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In light of these findings, SACN recommends that: Free sugars should account for no more than 5% daily dietary energy intake. The term free sugars is adopted, replacing the terms Non Milk Extrinsic Sugars (NMES) and added sugars. Free sugars are those added to food or those naturally present in honey, syrups and unsweetened fruit juices, but exclude lactose in milk and milk products. The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (e.g. fizzy drinks, soft drinks and squash) should be minimised by both children and adults.

SACN reviewed the evidence on vitamin D and health to see if UK dietary recommendations, set in 1991, were still appropriate. In addition to the main report, you can read the SACN press release. In a change to previous advice, SACN is now recommending: a reference nutrient intake (RNI) of 10 micrograms of vitamin D per day, throughout the year, for everyone in the general population aged 4 years and older an RNI of 10 micrograms of vitamin D per day for pregnant and lactating women and population groups at increased risk of vitamin D deficiency a ‘safe intake’ of 8.5 to 10 micrograms per day for all infants from birth to 1 year of age a ‘safe intake’ of 10 micrograms per day for children aged 1 to 4 years The RNI and safe intakes were developed to ensure that the majority of the UK population has enough vitamin D to protect musculoskeletal health, all year round. SACN did not take account of sunlight exposure in making recommendations because of the number and complexity of factors that affect skin synthesis of vitamin D. The RNI and safe intakes refer to intake from all dietary sources: natural food sources fortified foods (including infant formula milk) supplements They also refer to average intakes over a period of time, such as a week, and take account of day-to-day variations in intake.

Learning to live with diabetes in such a way that the new conditions will be a normal and natural part of life imposes requirements on the person living with diabetes. Previous studies have shown that there is no clear picture of what and how the learning that would allow persons to incorporate the illness into their everyday life will be supported. The aim of this study is to describe the phenomenon of support for learning to live with diabetes to promote health and well-being, from the patient's perspective. Data were collected by interviews with patients living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The interviews were analysed using a reflective lifeworld approach. The results show that reflection plays a central role for patients with diabetes in achieving a new understanding of the health process, and awareness of their own responsibility was found to be the key factor for such a reflection. The constituents are responsibility creating curiosity and willpower, openness enabling support, technology verifying bodily feelings, a permissive climate providing for participation and exchanging experiences with others. The study concludes that the challenge for caregivers is to create interactions in an open learning climate that initiates and supports reflection to promote health and well-being.

As the global population becomes increasingly urban, research is needed to explore how local culture, land use, and policy will influence urban natural resource management. We used a broad-scale comparative approach and survey of residents within the Portland (Oregon)-Vancouver (Washington) metropolitan areas, USA, two states with similar geographical and ecological characteristics, but different approaches to land-use planning, to explore resident perceptions about natural resources at three scales of analysis: property level (“at or near my house”), neighborhood (“within a 20-minute walk from my house”), and metro level (“across the metro area”). At the metro-level scale, nonmetric multidimensional scaling revealed that the two cities were quite similar. However, affinity for particular landscape characteristics existed within each city with the greatest difference generally at the property-level scale. Portland respondents expressed affinity for large mature trees, tree-lined streets, public transportation, and proximity to stores and services. Vancouver respondents expressed affinity for plentiful accessible parking. We suggest three explanations that likely are not mutually exclusive. First, respondents are segmented based on preferences for particular amenities, such as convenience versus commuter needs. Second, historical land-use and tax policy legacies may influence individual decisions. Third, more environmentally attuned worldviews may influence an individual’s desire to produce environmentally friendly outcomes. Our findings highlight the importance of acknowledging variations in residents’ affinities for landscape characteristics across different scales and locations because these differences may influence future land-use policies about urban natural resources.

On 2 July 2009, the EFSA Panel on Dietetic products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) endorsed a draft Opinion on Dietary Reference Values for fats to be released for public consultation. This Scientific Report summarises the comments received through the public consultation and outlines how these were taken into account in the final opinion. EFSA had received contributions from 40 interested parties (individuals, non-governmental organisations, industry organisations, academia and national assessment bodies). The main comments which were received during the public consultation related to: the availability of more recent data, the nomenclature used, the use of a non-European food composition data base, the impact of genetic factors in modulating the absorption, metabolism and health effects of different fatty acids, the definition of “nutritionally adequate diet”, the use of Dietary Reference Values in the labelling of foods, the translation of advice into food-based dietary guidelines, nutrient goals and recommendations, certain risk management issues, and to Dietary Reference Values of fats, individual fatty acids, and cholesterol. All the public comments received that related to the remit of EFSA were assessed and the Opinion on Dietary Reference Values for fats has been revised taking relevant comments into consideration.

Objective: The study was designed to validate use of elec-tronic health records (EHRs) for diagnosing bipolar disorder and classifying control subjects. Method: EHR data were obtained from a health care system of more than 4.6 million patients spanning more than 20 years. Experienced clinicians reviewed charts to identify text features and coded data consistent or inconsistent with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Natural language processing was used to train a diagnostic algorithm with 95% specificity for classifying bipolar disorder. Filtered coded data were used to derive three additional classification rules for case subjects and one for control subjects. The positive predictive value (PPV) of EHR-based bipolar disorder and subphenotype di- agnoses was calculated against diagnoses from direct semi- structured interviews of 190 patients by trained clinicians blind to EHR diagnosis. Results: The PPV of bipolar disorder defined by natural language processing was 0.85. Coded classification based on strict filtering achieved a value of 0.79, but classifications based on less stringent criteria performed less well. No EHR- classified control subject received a diagnosis of bipolar dis- order on the basis of direct interview (PPV=1.0). For most subphenotypes, values exceeded 0.80. The EHR-based clas- sifications were used to accrue 4,500 bipolar disorder cases and 5,000 controls for genetic analyses. Conclusions: Semiautomated mining of EHRs can be used to ascertain bipolar disorder patients and control subjects with high specificity and predictive value compared with diagnostic interviews. EHRs provide a powerful resource for high-throughput phenotyping for genetic and clinical research.

Formulated food systems are becoming more sophisticated as demand grows for the design of structural and nutritional profiles targeted at increasingly specific demographics. Milk protein is an important bio- and techno-functional component of such formulations, which include infant formula, sports supplements, clinical beverages and elderly nutrition products. This thesis outlines research into ingredients that are key to the development of these products, namely milk protein concentrate (MPC), milk protein isolate (MPI), micellar casein concentrate (MCC), β-casein concentrate (BCC) and serum protein concentrate (SPC). MPC powders ranging from 37 to 90% protein (solids basis) were studied for properties of relevance to handling and storage of powders, powder solubilisation and thermal processing of reconstituted MPCs. MPC powders with ≥80% protein were found to have very poor flowability and high compressibility; in addition, these high-protein MPCs exhibited poor wetting and dispersion characteristics during rehydration in water. Heat stability studies on unconcentrated (3.5%, 140°C) and concentrated (8.5%, 120°C) MPC suspensions, showed that suspensions prepared from high-protein MPCs coagulated much more rapidly than lower protein MPCs. β-casein ingredients were developed using membrane processing. Enrichment of β-casein from skim milk was performed at laboratory-scale using ‘cold’ microfiltration (MF) at <4°C with either 1000 kDa molecular weight cut-off or 0.1 µm pore-size membranes. At pilot-scale, a second ‘warm’ MF step at 26°C was incorporated for selective purification of micellised β-casein from whey proteins; using this approach, BCCs with β-casein purity of up to 80% (protein basis) were prepared, with the whey protein purity of the SPC co-product reaching ~90%. The BCC ingredient could prevent supersaturated solutions of calcium phosphate (CaP) from precipitating, although the amorphous CaP formed created large micelles that were less thermo-reversible than those in CaP-free systems. Another co-product of BCC manufacture, MCC powder, was shown to have superior rehydration characteristics compared to traditional MCCs. The findings presented in this thesis constitute a significant advance in the research of milk protein ingredients, in terms of optimising their preparation by membrane filtration, preventing their destabilisation during processing and facilitating their effective incorporation into nutritional formulations designed for consumers of a specific age, lifestyle or health status

Introduction - Fungi are natural coffee contaminants and under certain environmental conditions have the potential to produce toxins. Many studies revealed that the important toxigenic fungal genera (Aspergillus and Penicillium) are natural coffee contaminants, and are present from the field to storage. Aspergilli from the Circumdati and Nigri sections are known to produce high levels of ochratoxin A, a mycotoxin known as nephrotoxic for animals and humans. This work aimed to evaluate fungal distribution and also the prevalence of Aspergillus sections Fumigati, Flavi, Nigri and Circumdati from Coffea arabica (Arabica coffee) and Coffea canephora (Robusta coffee) green samples.

Aditivos químicos têm como principal objetivo melhorar os produtos industrializados, como fármacos, conferindo-lhes cor, aroma, textura, conservação, entre outros. Os aditivos utilizados na indústria farmacêutica são denominados excipientes, completando a massa ou o volume especificado no medicamento. São considerados substâncias inativas, uma vez que não apresentam propriedades curativas ou preventivas de doenças ou dos seus sintomas. No âmbito deste trabalho, foi realizado uma revisão bibliográfica sobre os excipientes naturais e sintéticos mais usados na indústria farmacêutica, agrupando-os mediante a sua função específica. Assim, foi feita uma breve descrição sobre alguns dos excipientes mais utilizados nas formulações farmacêuticas, nomeadamente os antioxidantes, os corantes, os edulcorantes e os conservantes, que visam garantir a conservação do produto em condições viáveis. Uma vez que os excipientes são considerados substâncias inativas, são vistos como inofensivos para a saúde. No entanto, é cada vez mais evidente que os excipientes não são sempre inertes e podem apresentar riscos para o desenvolvimento de reações alérgicas, podendo promover alterações mais prejudiciais. As reações alérgicas associadas aos excipientes são consideradas raras, visto que são incorporadas baixas concentrações destes em formulações farmacêuticas, tendo surgido, no entanto, diversos casos associados aos diferentes excipientes anteriormente referidos. Dependendo do excipiente e da sensibilidade do indivíduo, as alergias podem originar dermatites de contacto, prurido, urticária, edema, reações anafiláticas, entre outros. É importante salientar que o excesso de aditivos pode originar problemas de saúde, normalmente em indivíduos suscetíveis e na população pediátrica, sendo necessário aplicar cuidados adicionais que promovam uma maior vigilância e orientação no uso de medicamentos.

Desde da antiguidade que o ser humano se preocupa com a sua aparência externa, em especial com a pele. Para além do desenvolvimento de cosméticos, surgiram também produtos mais complexos, os cosmecêuticos, que diferem dos cosméticos devido a poderem influenciar a função biológica da pele, causando modificações positivas e duráveis. O conceito de sustentabilidade é usado para definir ações e atividades humanas que visam suprir as necessidades atuais dos seres humanos, sem comprometer o futuro das próximas gerações. Ou seja, a sustentabilidade está diretamente relacionada ao desenvolvimento económico e material sem agredir o meio ambiente, utilizando os recursos naturais de forma inteligente para que eles se mantenham no futuro. Seguindo estes parâmetros, a humanidade pode garantir o desenvolvimento sustentável. As borras de café são consideradas como um subproduto alimentar, sem grande reutilização, o que promove danos no impacto ambiental. Por outro lado, as borras de café podem exercer grandes benefícios para a pele, pois são consideradas excelentes exfoliantes naturais com propriedades refirmantes. Os produtos à base de cafeína são aliados no combate à celulite, na estimulação da regeneração celular e da circulação sanguínea, bem como, no rejuvenescimento e revitalização da pele. Este trabalho consistiu no desenvolvimento de um sabonete, contendo borras de café, como forma de reaproveitamento de um subproduto alimentar rico em cafeína, com o intuito de obter produtos com boas propriedades cosméticas e elevada estabilidade física e química. As borras de café foram analisadas em termos da sua estabilidade física e química através de ensaios de estabilidade acelerada por centrifugação, textura, reologia e doseamento do teor de cafeína por HPLC. Os resultados obtidos através do controlo físico-químico dos sabonetes, da determinação do potencial irritante cutâneo e da análise sensorial efectuada em voluntários humanos, demonstraram que é possível preparar sabonetes de borra de café com boa estabilidade físico-química, boa tolerância cutânea e com características sensoriais adequadas, utilizando uma base de sabão constituída pelos ingredientes (INCI): Sodium Palmate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Aqua (water), Glycerine, Fragância de café, Sodium Chloride, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (Shea Butter), CI 778911 (Titanium Dioxide), Tetrasodium EDTA, CI 77499, Linalool e à qual foi adicionada 5% de borras de café.

Objetivos - O foco deste artigo centra‐se na realidade emergente do consumo de medicamentos e/ou produtos terapêuticos naturais para finalidades de gestão do desempenho pessoal (aqui designados consumos de performance), e tem como objetivo analisar a relação entre as práticas de consumo e as perceções do risco e da eficácia atribuídas aos produtos farmacológicos e naturais para finalidades de melhoria e bem‐estar, por parte da população jovem portuguesa (18‐29 anos). Metodologia - A análise dos resultados empíricos de carácter extensivo resulta da aplicação de um inquérito por questionário a uma amostra de âmbito nacional (n=1.483). Do vasto conjunto de indicadores do questionário aplicado, aqueles que são aqui especificamente mobilizados são os que dizem respeito às perceções de risco associadas a estes consumos; aos escalonamentos de risco atribuídos aos diferentes recursos terapêuticos para finalidades de performance; bem como às experiências (e formas de gestão) do risco e da eficácia resultantes das práticas efetivas de consumo. Resultados - Constata‐se que, apesar de os posicionamentos relativamente ao risco dos consumos de performance fazerem salientar uma visão de valorização da segurança, há variações e diferenciações concretas que são indiciadoras não só de permeabilidades e predisposições ao consumo, mas também de conceções que se redefinem no quadro das experiências de uso, das circunstâncias do consumo e das finalidades da utilização dos diferentes produtos terapêuticos. Conclusões - As conceções sobre o risco associado a estes consumos traduzem uma certa plasticidade social, no sentido em que a ancoragem na experiência e a familiaridade com o próprio consumo constituem‐se como aspetos decisivos para a perceção de um maior controlo na gestão do risco. Torna‐se, por isso, importante aprofundar o conhecimento sobre as especificidades contextuais dos segmentos juvenis onde se constroem as modalidades de gestão prática do risco e da eficácia associadas a estes consumos.

Background: In 2013, the Revised Dietary Goals for Scotland (SDGs) were published to “indicate the direction of travel, and assist policy development to reduce the burden of obesity and diet-related disease in Scotland”. They include recommendations for foods (fruit and vegetables, oily fish and red meat) and nutrients (energy, energy density, total fat, saturated fat, trans fatty acids, sugar, salt and fibre). Progress towards the SDGs is monitored using a combination of surveys, principally the secondary analysis of the Living Costs and Food Survey (LCFS). Objective: To obtain estimates of food consumption and nutrient intake for Scotland using LCFS data from 2001 to 2013. Results: For SDGs measured using LCFS data there was little progress towards meeting the goals between 2001 and 2013. This was apparent even amongst least deprived households. Despite evidence of progress for fruit and vegetables up to 2010, consumption subsequently dropped; and there was no change in oil rich fish consumption. Mean total red meat consumption meets the SDG and a significant reduction was found between 2001 and 2013, which was partly accounted for by a fall in red meat products such as sausages and burgers. Energy density increased significantly over time despite a dip in 2012. Saturated fat, total fat and sugar intakes remained considerably higher than the SDGs. Overall there were small but significant decreases in the percentage of food energy from saturated fat and sugars, although intakes appear to have risen since 2011. There was no change in fibre intake. Conclusion: The results presented support work by Food Standards Scotland and the Scottish Government to facilitate improvements to the diet to help prevent obesity. Whilst some very small improvements were observed however, new approaches are required to encourage the population towards a healthier diet to secure Scotland’s health in the future. O presente relatório resulta de um estágio realizado no âmbito da eficiência energética assente no programa Galp 20-20-20 que tem por génese uma parceria entre a Universidade de Aveiro e a empresa de coberturas cerâmicas, CS – Coelho da Silva S.A. A Fábrica alvo de estudo é uma consumidora intensiva de energia, despendeu no ano de 2013 cerca de 3.768 tep. Devido aos seus processos de cozedura e secagem, apresenta uma elevada dependência de Gás Natural, representando pouco mais de 78% do consumo global da fábrica. Deste consumo de energia térmica, 83% respeita ao forno e os restantes 17% encontram-se alocados ao secador, pelo que as medidas de eficiência energética presentes neste relatório centram-se da redução deste vetor energético. São então propostas três medidas para a redução da dependência deste vetor. A primeira, incide na recuperação de calor residual presente nos gases de exaustão através da instalação de um permutador de calor. Esta medida permite uma redução do consumo na ordem dos 10% e conta com um payback de 2,3 anos resultante de uma economia anual de 150.000 €. Para este estudo foi desenvolvido um modelo dinâmico em excel que permite a simulação de diversos cenários. São também propostas mais duas intervenções que incidem na alteração do circuito térmico. Estas medidas têm um impacte mais reduzido no que respeita ao percentual de redução energético, ambas com menos de 1% de redução do consumo global da fábrica. Contudo são medidas bastante interessantes dada a sua simplicidade e contam com poupanças anuais na ordem dos 6.000 € que resultam num payback inferior a 2 meses. Paralelamente executaram-se dois estudos para a iluminação, o primeiro sugere a instalação de um modelador de tensão que reduz a potência de iluminação em 36%, implicando uma redução da iluminância de cerca de 5%. A redução da potência resulta numa economia energética na ordem dos 0,4% da energia global da instalação. Este equipamento poderá ser adquirido por completo ou em renting. Ao optar pela compra integral, o investimento será apenas ressarcido em 2,8 anos resultante de uma poupança anula de perto de 6.500 €. Caso seja por renting este não tem qualquer custo adicional e as economias monetárias são partilhadas entre a empresa que fornece o equipamento e a CS-Coelho da Silva, S.A. Por fim é sugerida a substituição de parte da iluminação atual da fábrica por tecnologia LED, com esta medida reduz-se o consumo global em 0,76%. Esta medida gera uma economia monetária na ordem dos 11.500 € sendo ressarcida em 2,1 anos.
