The synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) 15, 26, and 34 nm in diameter, followed by the investigation of their size-dependent optical and catalytic properties, is described herein as an undergraduate level experiment. The proposed experiment covers concepts on the synthesis, stabilization, and characterization of Au NPs, their size-dependent optical and catalytic properties at the nanoscale, chemical kinetics, and the role of a catalyst. The experiment should be performed by groups of two or three students in three lab sessions of 3 h each and organized as follows: i) synthesis of Au NPs of different sizes and investigation of their optical properties; ii) evaluation of their catalytic activity; and iii) data analysis and discussion. We believe that this activity enables students to integrate these multidisciplinary concepts in a single experiment as well as to become introduced/familiarized with an active research field and current literature in the areas of nanoparticle synthesis and catalysis.

Microemulsions (MEs) are thermodynamically stable systems consisting of nanosized droplets dispersed in a solvent continuous medium (known as pseudo-phase), which is immiscible with the dispersed phase. These systems consist of water, a hydrophobic solvent called "oil," an amphiphile and often, a co-surfactant that is normally a medium chain alcohol. A large number of publications describe the importance of MEs in many branches of chemistry, and there is an intensive search for new applications. In addition, MEs have been applied in many areas, including oil extraction, removal of environmental pollutants from soils and effluents, dissolution of additives in lubricants and cutting oils, cleaning processes, dyeing and textile finishing, as nanoreactors to obtain nanoparticles of metals, semiconductors, superconductors, magnetic and photographic materials, and latex. However, only some studies indicate the potential applications of MEs in food and even fewer evaluate their chemical behavior. Potential applications of MEs in food comprise dissolution of lipophilic additives, stabilization of nutrients and biologically active compounds, using as an antimicrobial agent and to maximize the efficiency of food preservatives. This work consists of a literature review focusing on composition and physical and chemical characteristics of microemulsions. Despite the small number of studies on the subject reported in the literature, we demonstrate some potential applications of MEs in food chemistry.

Asphaltenes are blamed for various problems in the petroleum industry, especially formation of solid deposits and stabilization of water-in-oil emulsions. Many studies have been conducted to characterize chemical structures of asphaltenes and assess their phase behavior in crude oil or in model-systems of asphaltenes extracted from oil or asphaltic residues from refineries. However, due to the diversity and complexity of these structures, there is still much to be investigated. In this study, asphaltene (sub)fractions were extracted from an asphaltic residue (AR02), characterized by NMR, elemental analysis, X-ray fluorescence and MS-TOF, and compared to asphaltene subfractions obtained from another asphaltic residue (AR01) described in a previous article. The (sub)fractions obtained from the two residues were used to prepare model-systems containing 1 wt% of asphaltenes in toluene and their phase behavior was evaluated by measuring asphaltene precipitation onset using optical microscopy. The results obtained indicated minor differences between the asphaltene fractions obtained from the asphaltic residues of distinct origins, with respect to aromaticity, elemental composition (CHN), presence and content of heteroelements and average molar mass. Regarding stability, minor differences in molecule polarity appear to promote major differences in the phase behavior of each of the asphaltene fractions isolated.

In this work, a theoretical study on the basis of structural, vibrational, electronic and topological parameters of the C2H2‧‧‧(HF), C2H2‧‧‧2(HF) and C2H2‧‧‧3(HF) complexes concerning the formation of π‧‧‧H, F‧‧‧H and C‧‧‧H hydrogen bonds is presented. The main difference among these complexes is not properly the interaction strength, but the hydrogen bond type whose benchmark is ruled justly by the structure. Meanwhile, the occurrence of π‧‧‧H hydrogen bonds was unveiled in both C2H2‧‧‧(HF) dimer and C2H2‧‧‧3(HF) tetramer, although in latter, this interaction is stronger than C‧‧‧H of the C2H2‧‧‧2(HF) trimer. However, the F‧‧‧H hydrogen bonds within the subunits of hydrofluoric acid are the strongest ones, reaching a partial covalent limit, and thereby contribute decisively to the stabilization of the tetramer structure. In line with this, the largest red-shifts were observed on the hydrofluoric acid trimer of the C2H2‧‧‧3(HF) complex.

Kuljetettaessa täyteainetta pidempiä matkoja voidaan aikaan saada säästöjä, mikäli täyteaineliete valmistetaan korkeaan kuiva-ainepitoisuuteen. Dispergointiaineen avulla täyteainelietteen kuiva-ainepitoisuutta voidaan nostaa ilman, että menetetään täyteainelietteen virtausominaisuuksia. Dispergointiaineen tehtävänä on stabiloida täyteaineliete niin, että täyteainepartikkelit pysyvät lietteessä erillään, jolloin lietteen kuiva-ainepitoisuuden kasvattaminen on mahdollista. Täyteainepartikkelien agglomeroituminen estyy, kun dispergointiaine kiinnittyy täyteainepartikkelin pinnalle lisäten partikkelin sähkövarausta ja vahvistaen näin partikkeleiden välisiä repulsiovoimia. Dispergointi on mahdollista tehdä myös steerisellä stabiloinnilla. Yleisimmät käytössä olevat dispergointiaineet ovat polyakryylaatteja. Työssä tutkittiin MBF- laitteella valmistettujen arkkien avulla dispergoinnin vaikutusta täyteaineiden käyttäytymiseen ja paperin ominaisuuksiin. Dispergointiaineen todettiin heikentävän täyteaineen retentiota paperiin, sillä dispergointiaineen aiheuttama täyteaineen anionisuuden kasvu lisää kuidun ja täyteaineen välistä repulsiota. Dispergoitujen täyteaineiden käyttö vaatii retentioaineannoksen kasvattamista, mikä voi johtaa puolestaan formaation heikkenemiseen. Dispergointiaineen todettiin alentavan hienopaperin bulkkia, sillä paksuutta lisääviä agglomeraatteja esiintyi todennäköisesti vähemmän. Lisäksi dispergointiaineen havaittiin heikentävän hienopaperin ja TMP:stä valmistetun paperin optisia ominaisuuksia. Hienopaperilla dispergointiaineen käyttö puolestaan paransi paperin lujuusominaisuuksia.

RNA is essential for all living organisms. It has important roles in protein synthesis, controlling gene expression as well as catalyzing biological reactions. Chemically RNA is a very stable molecule, although in biological systems many agents catalyze the cleavage of RNA, such as naturally occurring enzymes and ribozymes. Much effort has been put in the last decades in developing highly active artificial ribonucleases since such molecules could have potential in the therapeutic field and provide tools for molecular biology. Several potential catalysts have emerged, but usually detailed cleavage mechanism remains unresolved. This thesis is aimed at clarifying mechanistic details of the cleavage and isomerization of RNA by using simpler nucleoside models of RNA. The topics in the experimental part cover three different studies, one concerning the mechanism of catalysis by large ribozymes, one dealing with the reactivity of modified and unmodified RNA oligonucleotides and one showing an efficient catalysis of the cleavage and isomerization of an RNA phosphodiester bond by a dinuclear metal ion complex. A review of the literature concerning stabilization of the phosphorane intermediate of the hydrolysis and isomerization of RNA phosphodiester bond is first presented. The results obtained in the experimental work followed by mechanistic interpretations are introduced in the second part of the thesis. Especially the significance of hydrogen bonding interactions is discussed.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes applied in situ in a slaughter house treatment system, located in the west of the Paraná state, Brazil, regarding the nutrients removal and organic matter. Moreover, it aimed to obtain data from the production, management and composting practices of the biomass generated in the system. During 11 months of macrophytes development, physic and chemical parameters were monitored and plant density was controlled by periodical removal of excess biomass, which was weekly monitored and it is expressed in kg of aquatic plant per m² covered area. The degradation of the macrophytes removed from the treatment system was evaluated at the pilot scale in eight composting piles of 0.60 m³ that underwent four different treatments and two repetitions: T1 - water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes); T2 - water hyacinth and swine excrement (7:1), T3 - water hyacinth, swine excrement and earth (7:1:0,67), and T4 - water hyacinth, swine excrement and cellulosic gut (7:1:0,67), for a period of 90 days. The results indicated maximum removal efficiencies of 77.2% for COD; 77.8% for BOD, 87.9% for total nitrogen, 47.5% for ammonia nitrogen and 38.9% for total phosphorus for a five-day retention time. For biomass stabilization by composting, considering the C:N ratio as an indicator of compost maturity, it was observed that treatment T4 resulted in the shortest stabilization period (60 days). No difference was verified in the biostabilization rates at 5% level by the F test.

ABSTRACT Water and sewage treatment plants (STP and WTP) generate as byproduct a significant amount of sludge with environment harmful elements. Sending to landfills or depositing on the ground or rivers are respectively expensive and dangerous alternatives. In this scenario, the use of this waste in paving processes is a promising alternative for disposal thereof. In this study, we focused on characterizing sludge and evaluating its use in paving, which showed satisfactory results for use in base and sub-base floors.

The splenic artery aneurysm is a rare entity and its rupture is the most feared complication. The tomographic computed scan is a potential tool in the diagnosis, and can be used to patients with a suspicion of intra-abdominal bleeding, after adequate resuscitation. A case of a 68-year old male, hypertense patient, with a ruptured splenic artery aneurysm is reported. The diagnosis and treatment were given successfully by the abdominal computed tomographic scan and conventional surgery. The tomographic computed scan can be useful to the diagnosis of ruptured splenic artery aneurism, after the hemodynamic stabilization.

Inhibition of the tumor suppressor protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) activity has been identified as one of the five key alterations required for human cell transformation. Regardless of this crucial role in human cancer development, the detailed mechanisms by which PP2A inhibition occurs in human cancers remain largely uncharacterized. PP2A regulates a plethora of cellular signaling cascades. One of the targets of PP2A is Myc oncoprotein, which is destabilized and degraded in response to PP2A-mediated dephosphorylation of Myc serine 62. In this study we identify Cancerous Inhibitor of PP2A (CIP2A) as a previously uncharacterized endogenous inhibitor of PP2A in human cancer cells. CIP2A inhibits PP2A activity leading to subsequent stabilization of the Myc protein. CIP2A promotes malignant growth of cancer cells in vitro and xenograft tumor formation in vivo and is overexpressed in cancer. Moreover, we explored the effect of CIP2A on global transcriptional profiles and validated a CIP2A-dependent transcriptional signature. Analysis of the CIP2A signature revealed both Myc-dependent and -independent functions for CIP2A. Importantly, we demonstrate that the CIP2A signature has clinical relevance in human breast cancer subtypes. Finally, we identify the genes potentially mediating the long-term growth suppression in CIP2A depleted cancer cells. Taken together, this work identifies CIP2A as a novel human oncoprotein and describes its function in cancer cells. These results may open novel possibilities for patient stratification and therapeutic intervention of cancer.

In this thesis, the gas sensing properties of porous silicon-based thin-film optical filters are explored. The effects of surface chemistry on the adsorption and desorption of various gases are studied in detail. Special emphasis is placed on investigating thermal carbonization as a stabilization method for optical sensing applications. Moreover, the possibility of utilizing the increased electrical conductivity of thermally carbonized porous silicon for implementing a multiparametric gas sensor, which would enable simultaneous monitoring of electrical and optical parameters, is investigated. In addition, different porous silicon-based optical filter-structures are prepared, and their properties in sensing applications are evaluated and compared. First and foremost, thermal carbonization is established as a viable method to stabilize porous silicon optical filters for chemical sensing applications. Furthermore, a multiparametric sensor, which can be used for increasing selectivity in gas sensing, is also demonstrated. Methods to improve spectral quality in multistopband mesoporous silicon rugate filters are studied, and structural effects to gas sorption kinetics are evaluated. Finally, the stability of thermally carbonized optical filters in basic environments is found to be superior in comparison to other surface chemistries currently available for porous silicon. The results presented in this thesis are of particular interest for developing novel reliable sensing systems based on porous silicon, e.g., label-free optical biosensors.

Electrochemical double-layer supercapacitors have an intermediate position between rechargeable batteries, which can store high amounts of energy, and dielectric capacitors, which have high output power. Supercapacitors are widely suggested to be used in automobiles (recuperation during braking, facilitate engine starting, electric stabilization of the system), industry (forklifts, elevators), hybrid off-road machinery and also in consumer electronics. Supercapacitor electrodes require highly porous material. Typically, activated carbon is used. Specific surface area of activated carbon is approximately 1000 m2 per gram. Carbon nanotubes represent one of prospective materials. According to numerous studies this material allows to improve the properties of supercapacitors. The task of this Master‘s Thesis was to test multiwalled carbon nanotubes and become confident with the testing methods.
