Troger's base was the first amine to be resolved where the chirality was solely due to very high inversion barrier around nitrogen atom(s). Though the molecule was known over a century, work done during the past one decade has shown that Troger's base and its analogues could be used as chiral solvating agents, DNA-binding ligands and for the construction of biomimetic molecular receptors and clathrate hosts, Asymmetric synthesis of Troger's base analogues has also been achieved recently, Because of the rigid, 'V'-shaped chiral nature of this molecule, there is a growing interest for use of this unit in the design of potential host systems, This review article focuses on the chemistry of Troger's base along with the possible future utilities.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(L)(B)](ClO4) (1-3) of N-2-pyridylmethylidine-2-hydroxyphenylamine (HL) Schiff base and phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d: 2',3'-f] quinoxaline (dpq in 2) or dipyrido3,2-a: 2',3'-c] phenazine (dppz in 3), were prepared, characterized and their DNA binding property, photo-induced DNA cleavage activity and photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells studied. The crystal structure of 1 shows the presence of a VO2+ moiety in VO2N4 coordination geometry. The complexes show a d-d band at similar to 830 nm in DMF. The complexes display an oxidative V(V)-V(IV) response near 0.5 V versus SCE and a reductive V(IV)/V(III) response near -0.65 V in DMF -0.1 M TBAP. The complexes that are avid binders to CT DNA giving K-b values within 7.1 x 10(4) to 3.2 x 10(5) M-1, do not show any significant chemical nuclease activity in presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid or glutathione. The dpq and dppz complexes are photocleavers of pUC19 DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm forming both O-1(2) and (OH)-O-center dot radicals and in near-IR light of 785 nm forming (OH)-O-center dot radicals. The dppz complex exhibits photocytotoxicity in visible light in HeLa cells (IC50 = 6.8 mu M). Flow-cytometric study on this complex shows a high sub-G1 phase in light compared to dark indicating PDT effect. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Genetic algorithms (GAs) are search methods that are being employed in a multitude of applications with extremely large search spaces. Recently, there has been considerable interest among GA researchers in understanding and formalizing the working of GAs. In an earlier paper, we have introduced the notion of binomially distributed populations as the central idea behind an exact ''populationary'' model of the large-population dynamics of the GA operators for objective functions called ''functions of unitation.'' In this paper, we extend this populationary model of GA dynamics to a more general class of objective functions called functions of unitation variables. We generalize the notion of a binomially distributed population to a generalized binomially distributed population (GBDP). We show that the effects of selection, crossover, and mutation can be exactly modelled after decomposing the population into GBDPs. Based on this generalized model, we have implemented a GA simulator for functions of two unitation variables-GASIM 2, and the distributions predicted by GASIM 2 match with those obtained from actual GA runs. The generalized populationary model of GA dynamics not only presents a novel and natural way of interpreting the workings of GAs with large populations, but it also provides for an efficient implementation of the model as a GA simulator. Plate-shaped products resulting from martensitic, diffusional, and mixed mode transformations in zirconium-base alloys are compared. in the present study. These alloys are particularly suitable for the comparison in view of the fact that the lattice correspondence between the parent beta (bcc) and the product alpha (hcp) or gamma-hydride (fct) phases are remarkably similar for different types of transformations. Crystallographic features such as orientation relations, habit planes, and interface structures associated with these transformations have been compared:, with a view toward examining whether the transformation mechanisms have characteristic imprints on these experimental observables. Martensites exhibiting dislocated lath, internally twinned plate, and self-accommodating three-plate cluster morphologies have been encountered in Zr-2.5Nb alloy. Habit planes corresponding to all these morphologies have been found to be consistent with the predictions based on the invariant plane strain (IFS) criterion. Different morphologies have been found to reflect the manner in which the neighboring martensite variants are assembled. Lattice-invariant shears (LISs) for all these cases have been identified to be either {10 (1) over bar 1}(alpha) ((1) over bar 123)(alpha) slip or twinning on (10 (1) over bar 1)(alpha) planes. Widmanstatten alpha precipitates, forming in a step-quenching treatment, have been shown to have a lath morphology, the alpha/beta interface being decorated with a periodic array of (c + a) dislocations at a spacing of 8 to 10 nm. The line vectors of these dislocations are nearly parallel to the invariant lines. The alpha precipitates, forming in the retained beta phase on aging, exhibit an internally twinned structure with a zigzag habit plane. Average habit planes for the morphologies have been found to lie near the {103}(beta) - {113}(beta) poles, which are close to the specific variant of the {112}(beta) plane, which transforms into a prismatic plane of the type {1 (1) over bar 00}(alpha). The crystallography of the formation of the gamma-hydride phase (fct) from both the alpha and beta phases is seen to match the IFS predictions. While the beta-gamma transformation can be treated approximately as a simple shear on the basal plane involving a change in the stacking sequence, the alpha-gamma transformation call be conceptually broken into a alpha --> beta transformation following the Burgers correspondence and the simple beta-gamma shear process. The active eutectoid decomposition in the Zr-Cu system, beta --> alpha + beta', has been described in terms of cooperative growth of the alpha phase from the beta phase through the Burgers correspondence and of the partially ordered beta' (structurally similar to the equilibrium Zr2Cu phase) through an ordering process. Similarities and differences in crystallographic features of these transformations have been discussed. and the importance of the invariant line vector in deciding the geometry of the corresponding habit planes has been pointed out.

Schiff base vanadium(IV) complexes of phenyl esters of the two acidic amino acids, i.e., aspartic and glutamic acid, were synthesized. The phenyl esters of these amino acids were synthesized by conventional method whereas the Schiff base vanadium(IV) complexes were synthesized using microwave irradiation. The complexes were characterized by spectroscopic tools such as IR, 1H NMR, mass (ES), ESR, and UV visible spectroscopy. All the complexes were studied for antibacterial and antifungal activity and found to be moderately active.

A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.

Complexes of the formulation [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(O-2-C6H4-CH=NC6H4-4-CH3)(L)](ClO4), where L is gamma-picoline, 4-vinylpyridine, 1-methylimidazole and 1-vinylimidazole have been prepared and characterised. The molecular structure of the vinylpyridine adduct has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group P2(1) with the following cell dimensions for the C31H33CIN2O5Ru(M = 650.11): a = 10.890(2)Angstrom, b = 22.295(9)Angstrom, c = 12.930(2)Angstrom, beta = 109.30(2)degrees(3), V = 2964(l)Angstrom 3, Z = 4; D-c = 1.457g cm(-3), lambda(Mo-K alpha) = 0.7107 Angstrom; mu(Mo-K alpha)= 6.61 cm(-1); T = 293 K; R = 0.0359 (wR(2) = 0.0981) for 4819 reflections with I > 2 sigma(I). The structure shows the non-bonding nature of the double bond of the 4-vinylpyridine ligand in the complex in which the metal is bonded to the eta(6)-p-cymene, the N, O-bidentate chelating schiff-base and the unidentate N-donor pyridine ligands.

The polynuclear copper(II) complex [{Cu2L(O2CC5H4N)}. C2H5OH](x) (1), where H3L is a 1∶2 Schiff base derived from 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol and salicylaldehyde, has been prepared and structurally characterized. The structure consists of a one-dimensional zigzag chain in which the binuclear [Cu2L](+) units are covalently linked by isonicotinate ligands to give a syndiotactic arrangement of the copper ions protruding outside the chain. In the basic unit, the copper(II) centres are bridged by an alkoxo and a carboxylato ligand, giving a Cu ... Cu distance of 3.492(3) Angstrom and a Cu-O-Cu angle of 130.9(2)degrees. While one copper centre has a square-planar geometry, the other copper is square-pyramidal with the pyridine nitrogen being the axial ligand. The visible electronic spectrum of 1 shows a broad d-d band at 615 nm. The complex shows a rhombic X-band EPR spectral pattern in the polycrystalline phase at 77 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 22 to 295 K demonstrate the antiferromagnetic behaviour of 1. A theoretical fit to the magnetic data is based on a model assuming 1 as an equimolar mixture of copper atoms belonging to an antiferromagnetically coupled one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with the other copper atoms outside the chain behaving like paramagnetic centres.

Tensile tests in the temperature range 298 to 873 K have been performed on 2.25Cr-1Mo base metal and simulated heat affected zone (HAZ) structures of its weld joint, namely coarse grain bainite, fine grain bainite and intercritical structure. Tensile flow behaviour of all the microstructural conditions could be adequately described by the Hollomon equation (sigma = K-1 epsilon(n1)) at higher (> 623 K) temperatures. Deviation from the Hollomon equation was observed at low strains and lower (< 623 K) temperatures. The Ludwigson modification of Hollomon's equation, sigma = K-1 epsilon(n1) + exp (K-2 + n(2) epsilon), was found to describe the flow curve. In general, the flow parameters n(1), K-1, n(2) and K-2 were found to decrease with increase in temperature except in the intermediate temperature range (423 to 623 K). Peaks/plateaus were observed in their variation with temperature in the intermediate temperature range coinciding with the occurrence of serrated flow in the load-elongation curve. The n(1) Value increased and the K-1 value decreased with the type of microstructure in the order: coarse grain bainite, fine grain bainite, base metal and intercritical structure. The variation of nl with microstructure has been rationalized on the basis of mean free path (MFP) of dislocations which is directly related to the inter-particle spacing. Larger MFP of dislocations lead to higher strain hardening exponents n(1).

Parallel execution of computational mechanics codes requires efficient mesh-partitioning techniques. These mesh-partitioning techniques divide the mesh into specified number of submeshes of approximately the same size and at the same time, minimise the interface nodes of the submeshes. This paper describes a new mesh partitioning technique, employing Genetic Algorithms. The proposed algorithm operates on the deduced graph (dual or nodal graph) of the given finite element mesh rather than directly on the mesh itself. The algorithm works by first constructing a coarse graph approximation using an automatic graph coarsening method. The coarse graph is partitioned and the results are interpolated onto the original graph to initialise an optimisation of the graph partition problem. In practice, hierarchy of (usually more than two) graphs are used to obtain the final graph partition. The proposed partitioning algorithm is applied to graphs derived from unstructured finite element meshes describing practical engineering problems and also several example graphs related to finite element meshes given in the literature. The test results indicate that the proposed GA based graph partitioning algorithm generates high quality partitions and are superior to spectral and multilevel graph partitioning algorithms.

Aspirin anion appears to exist only fleetingly, rearranging via acetyl transfer to the ortho carboxylate group, as indicated by IR, UV and NMR. The resulting mixed anhydride cyclises to the more stable bicyclic orthoacetate isomer, a process facilitated by time and increasing pH. Mechanistic possibilities are discussed to explain these intriguing observations. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we address the fundamental question concerning the limits on the network lifetime in sensor networks when multiple base stations (BSs) are deployed as data sinks. Specifically, we derive upper bounds on the network lifetime when multiple BSs arc employed, and obtain optimum locations of the base stations that maximise these lifetime bounds. For the case of two BSs, we jointly optimise the BS locations by maximising the lifetime bound using genetic algorithm. Joint optimisation for more number of BSs becomes prohibitively complex. Further, we propose a suboptimal approach for higher number of BSs, Individually Optimum method, where we optimise the next BS location using optimum location of previous BSs. Individually Optimum method has advantage of being attractive for solving the problem with more number of BSs at the cost of little compromised accuracy. We show that accuracy degradation is quite small for the case of three BSs.

2D NMR spectroscopy has been used to determine the metal configuration in solution of three complexes, viz. [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(L*)Cl] (1) and [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(L*)(L')] (ClO4) (L' = H2O, 2; PPh3, 3), where L* is the anion of (S)-(1-phenylethyl)salicylaldimine. The complexes exist in two diastereomeric forms in solution. Both the (R-Ru,S-C)- and (S-Ru,S-C)-diastereomers display the presence of attractive, CH/pi interaction involving the phenyl group attached to the chiral carbon and the cymene ring hydrogens. This interaction restricts the rotation of the C*-N single bond and, as a result, two structural types with either the hydrogen atom attached to the chiral carbon (C*) or the methyl group attached to C* in close proximity of the cymene ring protons get stabilized. Using 2D NMR spectroscopy as a tool, the spatial interaction involving these protons are studied in order to obtain the metal configuration(s) of the diastereomeric complexes in solution. This technique has enabled us to determine the metal configuration as (R-Ru,S-C) for the major isomers of 1-3 in solution.

An efficient strategy for identification of delamination in composite beams and connected structures is presented. A spectral finite-element model consisting of a damaged spectral element is used for model-based prediction of the damaged structural response in the frequency domain. A genetic algorithm (GA) specially tailored for damage identification is derived and is integrated with finite-element code for automation. For best application of the GA, sensitivities of various objective functions with respect to delamination parameters are studied and important conclusions are presented. Model-based simulations of increasing complexity illustrate some of the attractive features of the strategy in terms of accuracy as well as computational cost. This shows the possibility of using such strategies for the development of smart structural health monitoring softwares and systems.
