The characteristics, performance, and application of an electrode, namely Pt| Hg|Hg-2(DCF)(2)|graphite, where DCF stands for diclofenac ion, are described. This electrode responds to diclofenac with sensitivity of (58.1 +/- 0.8) mV/decade over the range 5.0 x 10(-5) to 1.0 x 10(-2) Mol l(-1) at pH 6.5-9.0 and a detection limit of 3.2 x 10(-5) mol l(-1). The electrode is easily constructed at a relatively low cost with fast response time (within 10-30 s) and can be used for a period of 5 months without any considerable divergence in potentials. The proposed sensor displayed good selectivity for diclofenac in the presence of several substances, especially concerning carboxylate and inorganic anions. It was used to determine diclofenac in pharmaceutical preparations by means of the standard additions method. The analytical results obtained by using this electrode are in good agreement with those given by the United States Pharmacopeia procedures. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this article, we review intraspecific studies of basal metabolic rate (BMR) that address the correlation between diet quality and BMR. The food-habit hypothesis stands as one of the most striking and often-mentioned interspecific patterns to emerge from studies of endothermic energetics. Our main emphasis is the explicit empirical comparison of predictions derived from interspecific studies with data gathered from within-species studies in order to explore the mechanisms and functional significance of the putative adaptive responses encapsulated by the food-habit hypothesis. We suggest that, in addition to concentrating on the relationship among diet quality, internal morphology, and BMR, new studies should also attempt to unravel alternative mechanisms that shape the interaction between diet and BMR, such as enzymatic plasticity, and the use of energy-saving mechanisms, such as torpor. Another avenue for future study is the measurement of the effects of diet quality on other components of the energy budget, such as maximum thermogenic and sustainable metabolic rates. It is possible that the effects of diet quality operate on such components rather than directly on BMR, which might then push or pull along changes in these traits. Results from intraspecific studies suggest that the factors responsible for the association between diet and BMR at an ecological timescale might not be the same as those that promoted the evolution of this correlation. Further analyses should consider how much of a role the proximate and ultimate processes have played in the evolution of BMR.

The biooxidation of ferrous ion into ferric ion by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans can be potentially used for the removal of H2S from industrial gases. In this work, Fe3+ ions were obtained through the oxidation of Fe2+ using the LR strain of At. ferrooxidans immobilized in PVC stands in a pilot-scale bioreactor, while H2S was removed in an absorption tower equipped with Rasching rings. At. ferrooxidans LR strain cells were immobilized by inoculating the bacterium in a Fe2+-mineral medium and percolating it through the support. After complete Fe2+ oxidation, which took around 90 h, the reactor was washed several times with sulfuric acid (pH 1.7) before a new cycle was started. Four additional cycles using fresh Fe2+ mineral medium were then run. During these colonization cycles, the time required for complete iron oxidation decreased, dropping to about 60 h in the last cycle. The batch experiments in the H2S gas removal trials resulted in a gas removal rate of about 98-99% under the operational conditions employed. In the continuous experiments with the bioreactor coupled to the gas absorption column, a gas removal efficiency of almost 100% was reached after 500 min. Precipitate containing mainly sulfur formed during the experimental trial was identified by EDX. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Solid-state Ln-4-MeO-Bz compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y and 4-MeO-Bz is 4-methoxybenzoate, have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results led to information about the composition, dehydration, phase transition, coordination mode, structure, thermal behaviour and thermal decomposition of the isolated compounds. Organic-inorganic hybrids, named di-ureasils and described by polyether-based chains grafted to both ends to a siliceous backbone through urea cross linkages, were used as hosts for incorporation of the well-known coordination complex of trivalent europium (Eu3+) ions described by the formula [Eu(TTA)(3)(H2O)(2)] (where TTA stands for thenoyltrifluoroacetone). By comparing with Eu3+-doped di-ureasil without complex form the new materials prepared here enhanced the quantum efficiency for photoemission of Eu3+ ions. The enhancement can be explained by the coordination ability of the organic counterpart of the host structure which is strong enough to displace water molecules in [Eu(TTA)(3)(H2O)(2)] from the rare earth neighbourhood after the incorporation process. High intensity of Eu3+ emission was observed with a low non-radiative decay rate under ultraviolet excitation. The quantum efficiency calculated from the decay of D-5(0) emission was 74%, which in the same range of values previously obtained for the most efficient Eu3+ coordination compounds reported in literature. Luminescence, X-ray absorption and infrared absorption results considered together leads to a picture where the first coordination shell of Eu3+ is composed of the 6 oxygen atoms of the 3 beta-diketonate ligands and 2 ether-like oxygen atoms of the host. Positronium formation and target excitation in positron-helium scattering have been investigated using the close-coupling approximation with realistic wave functions for the positronium and helium atoms. The following eight states have been used in the close-coupling scheme: He(1s1s), He(1s2(1)s), He(1s2(1)p), He(1s3(1)s), He(1s3(1)p), Ps(1s), Ps(2s), and Ps(2p), where Ps stands for the positronium atom. Calculations are reported of differential cross sections for elastic scatering,, inelastic target excitation to He(1s2(1)s) and He(1s2(1)p) slates, and rearrangement transition to Ps(1s), Ps(2s), and Ps(2p) states for incident positron energies between 40 and 200 eV. The coincidence parameters for the transition to the He(1s2(1)p) state of helium are also reported and briefly discussed. [S1050-2947(98)05101-4].

Proton computerized tomography deals with relatively thick targets like the human head or trunk. In this case precise analytical calculation of the proton final energy is a rather complicated task, thus the Monte Carlo simulation stands out as a solution. We used the GEANT4.8.2 code to calculate the proton final energy spectra after passing a thick Al absorber and compared it with the same conditions of the experimental data. The ICRU49, Ziegler85 and Ziegler2000 models from the low energy extension pack were used. The results were also compared with the SRIM2008 and MCNPX2.4 simulations, and with solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation in the Fokker-Planck approximation. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, complexometry and elemental analysis were used to characterize the compounds. In order to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used. The results provided information on the composition, dehydration, polymorphic transformation, thermal stability and thermal decomposition of the synthesized compounds.

Solid-state Ln(2-MeO-BP) compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent Eu to Lu and Y(III) and 2-MeO-BP (which is 2-methoxybenzylidenepyruvate) have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and other methods of analysis were used to characterize and to study these compounds. on the base of the obtained results an Ln(2MeO-BP)(3)center dot H2O general formula can be established.
