This paper presents a human daily activity classification approach based on the sensory data collected from a single tri-axial accelerometer worn on waist belt. The classification algorithm was realized to distinguish 6 different activities including standing, jumping, sitting-down, walking, running and falling through three major steps: wavelet transformation, Principle Component Analysis (PCA)-based dimensionality reduction and followed by implementing a radial basis function (RBF) kernel Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. Two trials were conducted to evaluate different aspects of the classification scheme. In the first trial, the classifier was trained and evaluated by using a dataset of 420 samples collected from seven subjects by using a k-fold cross-validation method. The parameters σ and c of the RBF kernel were optimized through automatic searching in terms of yielding the highest recognition accuracy and robustness. In the second trial, the generation capability of the classifier was also validated by using the dataset collected from six new subjects. The average classification rates of 95% and 93% are obtained in trials 1 and 2, respectively. The results in trial 2 show the system is also good at classifying activity signals of new subjects. It can be concluded that the collective effects of the usage of single accelerometer sensing, the setting of the accelerometer placement and efficient classifier would make this wearable sensing system more realistic and more comfortable to be implemented for long-term human activity monitoring and classification in ambulatory environment, therefore, more acceptable by users.

We classify all the different kinds of errors that can occur in edge detection and then develop measures for quantifying these errors. It is shown that these sets of measures are complete and independent and form necessary components of an edge-evaluation scheme. The principle that an edge-evaluation measure should have certain qualitative properties is used to develop a method for combining these error components into a single combined measure.

Seismic data gathered from the Hydrocarbon Exploration and Discovery Operation is essential to identify possible hydrocarbon existence in a geologically surveyed area. However, the discovery operation takes a long time to be completed and computational processing of the acquired data is often delayed. Hydrocarbon exploration may end up needlessly covering an area without any hydrocarbon traces due to lack of immediate feedback from geophysical experts. This feedback can only be given when the acquired seismic data is computationally processed, analysed and interpreted. In response, we propose a comprehensive model to facilitate Hydrocarbon Exploration and Discovery Operation using encryption, decryption, satellite transmission and clouds. The model details the logical design of Seismic Data Processing (SDP) that exploits clouds and the ability for geophysical experts to provide on-line decisions on how to progress the hydrocarbon exploration operation at a remote location. Initial feasibility assessment was carried out to support our model. The SDP, data encryption and encryption for the assessment were carried out on a private cloud. The assessment shows that the overall process of hydrocarbon exploration from data acquisition, satellite data transmission through to SDP could be executed in a short time and at low costs.

Biosensors are projected to find many applications due to their high selectivity and sensitivity, rapid reaction, economy and ease of handling in field measurements. Even though biosensors for a wide range of environmental pollutants have been extensively reported in the literature, the decision to develop a suitable biosensing system that can be approved by a regulatory perspective for environmental applications is fraught with technical issues. These issues mainly concern the biological recognition element, the physico-chemical transducer and the interfaces between the biological and the physical components, but also aspects of fluidics, electronics, and software for data processing. This article focused on the development of microbial-based biosensors for environmental applications especially metal contaminants such as arsenic.

The aim of this paper is to automatically identify a Roman Imperial denarius from a single query photograph of its obverse and reverse. Such functionality has the potential to contribute greatly to various national schemes which encourage laymen to report their finds to local museums. Our work introduces a series of novelties: (i) this is the first paper which describes a method for extracting the legend of an ancient coin from a photograph; (ii) we are also the first to suggest the idea and propose a method for identifying a coin using a series of carefully engineered retrievals, each harnessed for further information using visual or meta-data processing; (iii) we show how in addition to a unique standard reference number for a query coin, the proposed system can be used to extract salient coin information (issuing authority, obverse and reverse descriptions, mint date) and retrieve images of other coins of the same type.

Adsorption of target molecules on the immobilized microcantilever surface produced beam displacement due to the differential surface stress generated between the immobilized and non-immobilized surface. Surface stress is caused by the intermolecular forces between the molecules. Van der Waals, electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic effect and steric hindrance are some of the intermolecular forces involved. A theoretical framework describing the adsorption-induced microcantilever displacement is derived in this paper. Experimental displacement of thrombin aptamer-thrombin interactions was carried out. The relation between the electrostatic interactions involved between adsorbates (thrombin) as well as adsorbates and substrates (thrombin aptamer) and the microcantilever beam displacement utilizing the proposed mathematical model was quantified and compared to the experimental value. This exercise is important to aid the designers in microcantilever sensing performance optimization.
