Molecular topology of three ring nematogens from C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings

Molecules in their liquid crystalline phase undergo rotational motion about the long axis of the molecule and the shape adopted by the rotating molecule plays an important role in influencing the mesophase morphology. In this context, obtaining the topology and the relative orientation of the different sub-units are important steps. For studying the liquid crystalline phase, C-13 NMR spectroscopy is a convenient method and for certain specifically designed nematogens, 2-dimensional separated local field (2D-SLF) NMR spectroscopy provides a particularly simple and straightforward means of arriving at the molecular topology. We demonstrate this approach on two three ring based nematogens designed with a phenyl or a thiophene ring at one of the termini. From the C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings of the terminal carbon obtained using the 2D-SLF NMR technique, the order parameter of the local symmetry axis of the terminal phenyl ring as well as of the long molecular axis could be easily estimated. For the thiophene nematogen, the lack of symmetry of the thiophene moiety necessitates some additional computational steps. The results indicate that the thiophene unit has its local ordering axis oriented away from the long molecular axis by a small angle, consistent with a bent structure expected in view of the thiophene geometry. The experiment also demonstrates the ability of 2D-SLF NMR to provide high resolution spectra by separation of several overlapped resonances in terms of their C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings. The results are consistent with a rod-like topology of the core of the investigated mesogens. The investigation demonstrates the potential of 2D-SLF NMR C-13 spectroscopy for obtaining atomistic level information and its utility for topological studies of different mesogens.

White luminescence in Dy3+ doped BiOCl phosphors and their Judd-Ofelt analysis

White-light emitting Dy3+ doped layered BiOCl phosphors were synthesized by the solid state route and their structure was confirmed by the Rietveld refinement method. On substitution of Dy3+ ion to Bi3+-site in BiOCl, the photoluminescence spectra exhibit blue (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(15/2)), yellow (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2)) and red (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(11/2)) emissions which function together to generate white light. It was found that the emission intensity increases up to 9 mol% of Dy3+ and then quenched due to dipole-dipole interaction. Judd-Ofelt theory and radiative properties suggest that the present phosphors have a long lifetime, high quantum efficiency, excellent color purity and better stimulated emission cross-section compared to reported Dy3+ doped compounds. The obtained color chromaticity results are close to the National Television System Committee standard and clearly establish the bright prospects of these phosphors in white luminescence. Ensayo con fertilizantes en cebolla, variedad cristal white wax

En este trabajo se observo las respuestas de tres caracteres, rendimientos, diámetro del bulbo y altura de tallo, de la cebolla Cristal WhiteWax, a las aplicaciones de 13 formulas de fertilizantes. Para este trabajo se uso el diseño de parcelas al azar con seis repeticiones. De acuerdo a los resultados obtenidos las formulas 150-100-0 y 100-200-0, son iguales estadisticamente y superiores al testigo 0-0-. Se encontraron tendencias ascendentes de rendimiento correspondientes a sucesivos incrementos de nitrógeno solo (50, 100 y 150 lbs/mza) pero estas diferencias no fueron significativas. Así mismo se encontró este mismo tipo de tendencia para el fósforo solo (100 y 200 lbs/mza.) Los resultados obtenidos para esta características están de acuerdo con algunos de los mencionados en la revisión de literatura. Para la característica diámetro del bulbo no se encontró diferencias estadísticas entre las formulas usadas, aunque como el caso anterior se observo una tendencia ascendente a los incrementos sucesivos de nitrógeno solo aplicado en los niveles de 50, 100 y 150 lbs/mza. El análisis estadístico de los resultados para altura de tallo demostró diferencias altamente significativas entre los tratamientos usados, observándose ademas que para las aplicaciones de nitrógeno solo, nitrógeno y fósforo juntos, fósforo solo y formula completas algunas de las respuestas obtenidas podrían considerarse como ilógica. En ninguno de los casos se observo una tendencia ascendente al aumento de las cantidades de fertilizantes usados. Se hace constar que los resultados obtenidos no se consideran suficientes para emitir conclusiones ni para soportar una recomendación de fertilización en cebolla.

MPI parallel programming of mixed integer optimization problems using CPLEX with COIN-OR

The aim of this technical report is to present some detailed explanations in order to help to understand and use the Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallel programming for solving several mixed integer optimization problems. We have developed a C++ experimental code that uses the IBM ILOG CPLEX optimizer within the COmputational INfrastructure for Operations Research (COIN-OR) and MPI parallel computing for solving the optimization models under UNIX-like systems. The computational experience illustrates how can we solve 44 optimization problems which are asymmetric with respect to the number of integer and continuous variables and the number of constraints. We also report a comparative with the speedup and efficiency of several strategies implemented for some available number of threads.
