Brazilian scientists have been contributing to the protozoology field for more than 100 years with important discoveries of new species such as Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania spp. In this work, we used a Brazilian thesis database (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) covering the period from 1987-2011 to identify researchers who contributed substantially to protozoology. We selected 248 advisors by filtering to obtain researchers who supervised at least 10 theses. Based on a computational analysis of the thesis databases, we found students who were supervised by these scientists. A computational procedure was developed to determine the advisors’ scientific ancestors using the Lattes Platform. These analyses provided a list of 1,997 researchers who were inspected through Lattes CV examination and allowed the identification of the pioneers of Brazilian protozoology. Moreover, we investigated the areas in which researchers who earned PhDs in protozoology are now working. We found that 68.4% of them are still in protozoology, while 16.7% have migrated to other fields. We observed that support for protozoology by national or international agencies is clearly correlated with the increase of scientists in the field. Finally, we described the academic genealogy of Brazilian protozoology by formalising the “forest” of Brazilian scientists involved in the study of protozoa and their vectors over the past century.

With an increased number of international students undertaking higher education courses (degrees), Australian universities are challenged to prepare international students with the necessary understandings, knowledge and skills to effectively participate in the workplace. For many students, understanding Early Childhood Education in Australia is a new way of viewing teaching and learning from their own cultural perspective. In order to facilitate successful engagement during pre-service teacher practicums (placements) and in response to concerns raised by mentorteachers in the workplace, a pilot program was run at Deakin University in 2015 for students to undertake before placement. The program focused on ‘play’ as an innovative model of teaching. This paper situates itself as part of a wider study Improving work placement for international students, their mentors and other stakeholders. It draws on narrative reflection, classroom observation, questionnaire and interview data from the early childhood strand within the Master of Teaching course at Deakin University. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis the data was analysed and coded into two emerging themes: building confidence and competency skills and connecting to the early childhood context. Generalisationscannot be made to other educational institutions or context however; the findings reveal that ‘play’ can be used as a powerful tool to empower students to make connection with early childhood settings. It is hoped that the findings may provide a platform for further dialogue with other universities regarding how best we can prepare international education students at Australian universities for their practicum experience.

Online international introduction sites that offer romance tours to American men in search of a foreign bride are an important and rapidly growing component of the internet dating industry; the number of these agencies in the U.S. tripled from two hundred to six hundred in the past 10 years. Previous scholars have examined the so-called ‘mail order bride’ industry in order to demonstrate that the women involved are agents and not victims. Many scholars have also highlighted the importance of race in shaping American men’s desires in one particular region or country. My dissertation provides an important addition to the literature surrounding romance tourism by including participants from all three major regions associated with romance tourism: Eastern Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia. I collected the data for the dissertation by becoming a participant observer of a romance tour in Ukraine, Colombia, and the Philippines. I argue that romance tourism is an important example of the global intimate, and the ways in which globalized processes are created and sustained through everyday intimate emotions and interactions. By examining the ways in which the emotions of desire, disgust, and anxiety influence individual romance tour participant’s constructions of racialized hierarchies, the links between individual emotions and global systems are revealed. The concept of the global intimate challenges the hierarchy of scale that places the body, the home, and the intimate on a much lower level than the scale of the global or the national, and at the same time challenges the binary that divides the individual from the global. Through highlighting the different emotional negotiations that are constantly occurring in the romance tour industry, I highlight the important ways in which individual emotions and affects influence global processes on a large scale and vice versa.

The Nobel Women’s Initiative (NWI) was formed in August 2006. It was a response to a suggestion by Iranian laureate Shirin Ebadi that women recipients of the Peace Prize should collectively endeavor to use the power and influence concomitant with being Nobel laureates to advance the cause of women internationally, by bringing their voices and experiences to the direct attention of the international community and media sources. NWI represents an attempt to help fill a gap that mars the present system of international relations. Over the past half-century, global standards have developed in earnest. One of these standards is women’s equality with men. Despite the codification of this precept in international law, gender discrimination against women remains a globally unresolved problem. Women are seriously underrepresented at local, national, regional, and international levels of governance, and their voices and experiences remain marginalized from negotiations toward conflict resolution and the formation of viable democratic institutions.

Purpose – This study examines Vietnamese international students’ experiences with thecampus learning environment by analysing differences in staff and student perceptions.Design/methodology/approach – Two focus groups (N = 12) and ten (10) in-depthinterviews were conducted with Vietnamese students and four (4) in-depth interviews withthe university staff (totalling 26).Findings – The findings show a greater divergence of views between students and staff onteaching and learning than English language proficiency and student support services. These key differences were influenced by students’ prior expectations of their learningenvironment.Research limitations/implications – This study is limited to one group of internationalstudents and to one Australian university.Practical implications – The academics and administrators must have a goodunderstanding of international students’ learning backgrounds and expectations to enhancetheir positive experience; Appropriate teaching skills and practices are essential foracademics to meet the current needs of students. More effective training for internationalstudents to understand the multicultural nature of Australia is also essential.Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by identifying the experienceof Vietnamese international students in a western university, which is, a relatively underresearchednationality compared to other Asian nationalities such as Chinese and Indian.

In recent years the interest in pyrogenic carbon for agricultural use (biochar, i.e. carbonized biomass for agricultural use) has sharply increased. However biochar contain dangerous compounds such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), many of them potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic. They are organic compounds formed from incomplete combustion of organic materials and are persistent pollutants. Therefore, PAHs concentrations and their dynamic must be evaluated in soils amended with biochar. For this, soil samples were collected in three experimental areas in different years (1, 3, 5 or 6) after the application of 0 (control) or 16 Mg ha-1 of biochar. This is the first report of PAHs persistence up to six years in soil treated with biochar. The biochar application increased total PAHs concentrations up to five years after the application, however the levels have always been an order of magnitude lower the limits of prevention established by International Environmental Agencies for soils. Thus, under the evaluated conditions ,the use of biochar was safe concerning PAHs contamination, besides, after six years of the application, the levels found were similar to the control treatment, making it possible to define a safe frequency of application based on the persistence of PAHs in soil.
