The electromechanical transfer characteristics of adhesively bonded piezoelectric sensors are investigated. By the use of dynamic piezoelectricity theory, Mindlin plate theory for flexural wave propagation, and a multiple integral transform method, the frequency-response functions of piezoelectric sensors with and without backing materials are developed and the pressure-voltage transduction functions of the sensors calculated. The corresponding simulation results show that the sensitivity of the sensors is not only dependent on the sensors' inherent features, such as piezoelectric properties and geometry, but also on local characteristics of the tested structures and the admittance and impedance of the attached electrical circuit. It is also demonstrated that the simplified rigid mass sensor model can be used to analyze successfully the sensitivity of the sensor at low frequencies, but that the dynamic piezoelectric continuum model has to be used for higher frequencies, especially around the resonance frequency of the coupled sensor-structure vibration system.

Rectangular piezoceramic transducers are widely used in ultrasonic evaluation and health monitoring techniques and structural vibration control applications. In this paper the flexural waves excited by rectangular transducers adhesively attached to isotropic plates are investigated. In view of the difficulties in developing accurate analytical models describing the transfer characteristics of the transducer due to the complex electromechanical transduction processes and transducer-structure interactions involved, a combined theoretical-experimental approach is developed. A multiple integral transform method is used to describe the propagation behaviour of the waves in the plates, while a heterodyne Doppler laser vibrometer is employed as a non-contact receiver device. This combined theoretical-experimental approach enables the efficient characterization of the electromechanical transfer properties of the piezoelectric transducer which is essential for the development of optimized non-destructive evaluation systems. The results show that the assumption of a uniform contact pressure distribution between the transducer and the plate can accurately predict the frequency spectrum and time domain response signals of the propagating waves along the main axes of the rectangular transmitter element.

The free radical polymerization of styrene in bulk was monitored by ESR and FT near-infrared spectroscopy at 70°C for a series of concentrations of the initiator, dimethyl 2,2′-azobis(isobutyrate). In order to obtain detailed kinetic information over the intire conversion range, and the gel effect range in particular, conversion and free radical concentration data points were accumulated with exceptionally short time intervals. The polystyrene radical concentration ([St•]) went through a sharp maximum at the gel effect, a feature that has hitherto escaped observation due to the rapid concentration changes in the gel effect range relative to the data point time intervals of previous studies. Temperature measurements throughout the polymerization were employed to calculate that a temperature increase was not the cause of the [St•] maximum, which thus appeares to be a genuine feature of the gel effect of this system under isothermal conditions. The propagation rate constant (kp) as a function of monomer conversion exhibited a marked dependence on initiator concentration at high monomer conversion; the sharp decrease in kp with increasing conversion was shifted to higher conversions with increasing initiator concentration.

The acousto-ultrasonic (AU) input-output characteristics for contact-type transmitting and receiving transducers coupled to composite laminated plates are considered in this paper. Combining a multiple integral transform method, an ordinary discrete layer theory for the laminates and some simplifying assumptions for the electro-mechanical transduction behaviour of the transducers, an analytical solution is developed which can deal with all the wave processes involved in the AU measurement system, i.e, wave generation, wave propagation and wave reception. The spectral response of the normal contact pressure sensed by the receiving transducer due to an arbitrary input pulse excited by the transmitting transducer is obtained. To validate the new analytical-numerical spectral technique in the low-frequency regime, the results are compared with Mindlin plate theory solutions. Based on the analytical results, numerical calculations are carried out to investigate the influence of various external parameters such as frequency content of the input pulse, transmitter/receiver spacing and transducer aperture on the output of the measurement system. The results show that the presented analytical-numerical procedure is an effective tool for understanding the input-output characteristics of the AU technique for laminated plates. The basal dendritic arbors of over 500-layer III pyramidal neurones of the macaque cortex were compared by fractal analyses, which provides a measure of the space filling (or branching pattern) of dendritic arbors. Fractal values (D) of individual cells were compared between the cytochrome oxidase (CO)-rich blobs and CO-poor interblobs, of middle and upper layer III, and between sublaminae, in the primary visual area (Vi). These data were compared with those in the CO compartments in the second visual area (V2), and seven other extrastriate cortical areas. (V4, MT, LIP, 7a, TEO, TE and STP). There were significant differences in the fractal dimensions, and therefore the dendritic branching patterns, of cells in striate and extrastriate areas. Of the 55 possible pairwise comparisons of fractal dimension of neurones in different cortical areas (or CO compartments), 39 proved to be significantly different. The markedly different morphologies of pyramidal cells in the different cortical areas may be one of the features that determine the functional signatures of these cells by influencing the number of inputs received by, and propagation of potentials through, their dendritic arbors.

Recently there has been experimental and theoretical interest in cross-dispersion effects in rubidium vapor, which allows one beam of light to be guided by another. We present theoretical results which account for the complications created by the D line hyperfine structure of rubidium as well as the presence of the two major isotopes of rubidium. This allows the complex frequency dependence of the effects observed in our experiments to be understood and lays the foundation for future studies of nonlinear propagation.

Computational simulations of the title reaction are presented, covering a temperature range from 300 to 2000 K. At lower temperatures we find that initial formation of the cyclopropene complex by addition of methylene to acetylene is irreversible, as is the stabilisation process via collisional energy transfer. Product branching between propargyl and the stable isomers is predicted at 300 K as a function of pressure for the first time. At intermediate temperatures (1200 K), complex temporal evolution involving multiple steady states begins to emerge. At high temperatures (2000 K) the timescale for subsequent unimolecular decay of thermalized intermediates begins to impinge on the timescale for reaction of methylene, such that the rate of formation of propargyl product does not admit a simple analysis in terms of a single time-independent rate constant until the methylene supply becomes depleted. Likewise, at the elevated temperatures the thermalized intermediates cannot be regarded as irreversible product channels. Our solution algorithm involves spectral propagation of a symmetrised version of the discretized master equation matrix, and is implemented in a high precision environment which makes hitherto unachievable low-temperature modelling a reality.

Time-dependent wavepacket evolution techniques demand the action of the propagator, exp(-iHt/(h)over-bar), on a suitable initial wavepacket. When a complex absorbing potential is added to the Hamiltonian for combating unwanted reflection effects, polynomial expansions of the propagator are selected on their ability to cope with non-Hermiticity. An efficient subspace implementation of the Newton polynomial expansion scheme that requires fewer dense matrix-vector multiplications than its grid-based counterpart has been devised. Performance improvements are illustrated with some benchmark one and two-dimensional examples. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Previous studies have shown that a negative relationship exists between transpiration efficiency (TE) and carbon isotope discrimination (Delta) and between TE and specific leaf area (SLA) in Stylosanthes scabra, A glasshouse experiment was conducted to confirm these relationships in an F-2 population and to study the causal nature of these relationships through quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, One hundred and twenty F-2 genotypes from a cross between two genotypes within S. scabra were used. Three replications for each genotype were maintained through vegetative propagation, Water stress was imposed by maintaining plants at 40% of field capacity for about 45 d. To facilitate QTL analysis, a genetic linkage map consisting of 151 RAPD markers was developed, Results from this study show that Delta was significantly and negatively correlated with TE and biomass production. Similarly, SLA showed significant negative correlation with TE and biomass production, Most of the QTL for TE and Delta were present on linkage groups 5 and 11. Similarly, QTL for SLA, transpiration and biomass productivity traits were clustered on linkage groups 13 and 24, One unlinked marker was also associated with these traits, There were several markers coincident between different traits, At all the coincident QTL, the direction of QTL effects was consistent with phenotypic data, At the coincident markers between TE and Delta, high alleles of TE were associated with low alleles of Delta. Similarly, low alleles of SLA were associated with high alleles of biomass productivity traits and transpiration. At the coincident markers between trans-4-hydroxy-N-methyl proline (MHP) and relative water content (RWC), low alleles of MHP were associated with high alleles of RWC, This study suggests the causal nature of the relationship between TE and Delta. Phenotypic data and QTL, data show that SLA was more closely associated with biomass production than with TE, This study also shows that a cause-effect relationship may exist between SLA and biomass production.

This paper details an investigation of a power combiner that uses a reflect array of dual-feed aperture-coupled microstrip patch antennas and a corporate-fed dual-polarized array as a signal distributing/combining device. In this configuration, elements of the reflect array receive a linearly polarized wave and retransmit it with an orthogonal polarization using variable-length sections of microstrip lines connecting receive and transmit ports. By applying appropriate lengths of these delay lines, the array focuses the transmitted wave onto the feed array. The operation of the combiner is investigated for a small-size circular reflect array for the cases of -3 dB, -6 dB and -10 dB edge illumination by the 2 x 2-element dual-polarized array.

Avicennia marina is an important mangrove species with a wide geographical and climatic distribution which suggests that large amounts of genetic diversity are available for conservation and breeding programs. In this study we compare the informativeness of AFLPs and SSRs for assessing genetic diversity within and among individuals, populations and subspecies of A. marina in Australia. Our comparison utilized three SSR loci and three AFLP primer sets that were known to be polymorphic, and could be run in a single analysis on a capillary electrophoresis system, using different-colored fluorescent dyes. A total of 120 individuals representing six populations and three subspecies were samplcd. At the locus level, SSRs were considerably more variable than AFLPs, with a total of 52 alleles and an average heterozygosity of 0.78. Average heterozygosity for AFLPs was 0.193, but all of the 918 bands scored were polymorphic. Thus, AFLPs were considerably more efficient at revealing polymorphic loci than SSRs despite lower average heterozygosities. SSRs detected more genetic differentiation between populations (19 vs 9%) and subspecies (35 vs 11%) than AFLPs. Principal co-ordinate analysis revealed congruent patterns of genetic relationships at the individual, population and subspecific levels for both data sets. Mantel testing confirmed congruence between AFLP and SSR genetic distances among, but not within, population comparisons, indicating that the markers were segregating inde- pendently but that evolutionary groups (populations and subspecies) were similar. Three genetic criteria of importance for defining priorities for ex situ collections or in situ conservation programs (number of alleles, number of locally common alleles and number of private alleles) were correlated between the AFLP and SSR data sets. The congruence between AFLP and SSR data sets suggest that either method, or a combination, is applicable to expanded genetic studies of mangroves. The codominant nature of SSRs makes them ideal for further population-based investigations, such as mating-system analyses, for which the dominant AFLP markers are less well suited. AFLPs may be particularly useful for monitoring propagation programs and identifying duplicates within collections, since a single PCR assay can reveal many loci at once.

We present an efficient and robust method for calculating state-to-state reaction probabilities utilising the Lanczos algorithm for a real symmetric Hamiltonian. The method recasts the time-independent Artificial Boundary Inhomogeneity technique recently introduced by Jang and Light (J. Chem. Phys. 102 (1995) 3262) into a tridiagonal (Lanczos) representation. The calculation proceeds at the cost of a single Lanczos propagation for each boundary inhomogeneity function and yields all state-to-state probabilities (elastic, inelastic and reactive) over an arbitrary energy range. The method is applied to the collinear H + H-2 reaction and the results demonstrate it is accurate and efficient in comparison with previous calculations. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. A protocol based on seed culture was developed for efficient in vitro propagation of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik). Benzyladenine (BA), thidiazuron (TDZ), and kinetin all induced multiple shoot formation. In terms of the number of long shoots (>2.0 cm) produced per seed, BA and TDZ at optimum concentrations (0.2-0.4 and 0.1 mg/litre, respectively) had similar efficiency, whereas kinetin produced less shoots. Murashige and Skoog (MS) salt composition was better than that of Gamborge (B5) for shoot induction. Increasing calcium (Ca) concentration was necessary to overcome shoot-tip necrosis. For shoot elongation, fresh medium of the same composition of shoot induction medium could be used for stumps from medium with low BA (
