The magneto-optical rotation at room temperature was measured for three Ga:S:La:O chalcogenide glasses at several laser lines in the visible. The first sample was a binary system constituted by 70 mol % Ga2S3 and 30 mol % La2O3, whereas in the second and third ones the lanthanum oxide was partially substituted by lanthanum sulfide, keeping the amount of gallium sulfide fixed. A pulsed magnetic field between 50 and 80 kG was used for the Faraday rotation measurements. The Verdet constant for one of the ternary samples was found to be as high as 0.205 min G(-1) cm(-1) at 543 nm, indicating that these chalcogenide glasses are very promising for magneto-optical applications. The data for each sample were fitted using the expected analytical expression for the magneto-optical dispersion. Measurements of the refractive index of the glasses at 632.8 nm are also reported. Data on the magneto-optical properties of two high Verdet constant, heavy-metal oxide diamagnetic glasses are also included for comparison. Tungstate fluorophosphate glasses of good optical quality were synthesized by fusion of the components and casting under air atmosphere. The absorption spectra from near-infrared to visible were obtained and the Judd-Ofelt parameters determined from the absorption bands. Transition probabilities, excited state lifetimes and transition branching ratios, were, determined from the measurements. Pumping with a 354.7 nm beam from a pulsed laser. resulted in emission at 450 nm. due to transition D-1(2)-->F-3(4) in Tm3+ ions and a broadband emission centered at approximate to 550 nm attributed to the glass matrix. When pumping at 650 nm, two emission bands at 450 nm (D-1(2)-->F-3(4)) and at 790 nm (H-3(4)-->H-3(6)) were observed. Excitation spectra were also obtained in order to understand the origin of both emissions. Theoretical and experimental lifetimes were determined and,the results were explained in terms of multiphonon relaxation. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

We have been developing a computational code to project optical lenses, with low aberration effects. Our main interest is model the human eye, particularly, project special corrective lenses. As the lens shape is the focus of the optimization, we have coupled a ray tracing method with Monte Carlo techniques. The initial results indicated that the algorithm must be improved in terms of resolution and reliability.

In order to study the divergence of teleost sex chromosomes, subtractive cloning was carried out between genomic DNA of males and females of the rainbow trout (XX/XY) and of Leporinus elongatus (ZW/ZZ). Inserts cloned in a plasmid vector were individually tested on Southern blots of DNA of males and females for sex specificity. No sex-specific insert was obtained from trout, but two out of ten inserts cloned from L. elongatus showed sex-specific patterns in this species: one corresponds to a sequence present on both Z and W chromosomes, while the other is W specific. Sequences of these two inserts show neither clear homology with other known sequences, nor an open reading frame. They cross-hybridize with the genomic DNA of Leporinus friderici, but without sex-specific patterns. Twenty-four L. elongatus adults were sexed by gonadal observation, chromosomed examination and Southern hybridization with one or the other insert. Ten males and 11 females had chromosomes and hybridization patterns typical of their sex. One ZW female was recognized as a male with the W-specific probe. This was also the case for two unusual ZW males, one having a male hybridization pattern with the other probe. These three atypical individuals may result from single genetic exchanges between four regions of the Z and the W, giving rise to three atypical W chromosomes. Finding males with such atypical heterochromosomes in a female heterogametic species may indicate that a gradual transition occurs between the heterogametic systems.

Cubic phase group III-nitrides were grown using RF plasma assisted Molecular Beam Epitaxy on GaAs (001) substrates. High-resolution X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence and photoreflectance measurements were employed to characterize the structural and optical properties of GaN/AlxGa1-xN Multi Quantum Well (MQW) structures, in which both Aluminum content and well widths were varied. The observed quantized states are in agreement with first-principles based theoretical calculations.

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was immobilized in cubes of polyurethane foam and the ability of this immobilized material to separate Sb(III) and Sb(V) was investigated. A method based on sequential determination of total Sb (after on-line reduction of Sb(V) to Sb(III) with thiourea) and Sb(Ill) (after on-line solid-liquid phase extraction) by hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry is proposed. A flow system assembled with solenoid valves was used to manage all stages of the process. The effects of pH, sample loading and elution flow rates on solid-liquid phase extraction of Sb(III) were evaluated. Also, the parameters related to online pre-reduction (reaction coil and flow rates) were optimized. Detection limits of 0.8 and 0.15 mu g L-1 were obtained for total Sb and Sb (III), respectively. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of river water and effluent samples. The results obtained for the determination of total Sb were in agreement with expected values, including the river water Standard Reference Material 1640 certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Recoveries of Sb(III) and Sb(V) in spiked samples were between 81 19 and I I I 15% when 120 s of sample loading were used. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Photoconductivity of SnO2 sol-gel films is excited, at low temperature, by using a 266 nm line-fourth harmonic-of a Nd:YAG laser. This line has above bandgap energy and promotes generation of electron-hole pairs, which recombines with oxygen adsorbed at grain boundary. The conductivity increases up to 40 times. After removing the illumination on an undoped SnO2 film, the conductivity remains unchanged, as long as the temperature is kept constant. Adsorbed oxygen ions recombine with photogenerated holes and are continuously evacuated from the system, leaving a net concentration of free electrons into the material, responsible for the increase in the conductivity. For Er doped SnO2, the excitation of conductivity by the laser line has similar behavior, however after removing illumination, the conductivity decreases with exponential-like decay. Barium strontium titanate (Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3) thin films have been prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a soft solution processing. X-ray diffraction and also micro-Raman spectroscopy showed that the Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films exhibited a tetragonal structure at room temperature. The presence of Raman active modes was clearly shown at the 299 and 725 cm(-1) peaks. The tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition in the Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films is broadened, and suppressed at about 35 degreesC, with a maximum dielectric constant of 948 (100 kHz). Electrical measurements for the prepared Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films showed a remnant polarization (P-r) of 6.5 muC/cm(2), a coercive field (E-c) of 41 kV/cm, and good insulating properties. The dispersion of the refractive index is interpreted in terms of a single electronic oscillator at 6.97 eV. The direct band gap energy (E-g) and the refractive index (n) are estimated to be 3.3 eV and n = 2.27-2.10, respectively. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Optical spectroscopic properties of Tm3+-doped 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) glass are reported. The absorption spectra were obtained and radiative parameters were determined using the Judd-Ofelt theory. Characteristics of excited states were studied in two sets of experiments. Excitation at 360 nm originates a relatively narrow band emission at 450 nm attributed to transition D-1(2)-->F-3(4) of the Tm3+ ion with photon energy larger than the band-gap energy of the glass matrix. Excitation at 655 nm originates a frequency upconverted emission at 450 nm (D-1(2)-->F-3(4)) and emission at 790 nm (H-3(4)-->H-3(6)). The radiative lifetimes of levels D-1(2) and H-3(4) were measured and the differences between their experimental values and the theoretical predictions are understood as due to the contribution of energy transfer among Tm3+ ions. We study the relationship between the optical gap and the optical-absorption tail breadth for the case of amorphous gallium arsenide (a-GaAs). In particular, we analyze the optical-absorption spectra corresponding to some recently prepared a-GaAs samples. The optical gap and the optical-absorption tail breadth corresponding to each sample is determined. Plotting the optical gap as a function of the corresponding optical-absorption tail breadth, we note that a trend, similar to that found for the cases of the hydrogenated amorphous silicon and hydrogenated amorphous germanium, is also found for the case of a-GaAs. The impact of alloying on the optical-absorption spectrum associated with a-GaAs is also briefly examined. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Thin films of potassium niobate were deposited on MgO (100) substrates by the polymeric precursor method and annealing in static air at 600 degreesC for 20 h. The obtained films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the prism coupling method. The phi-scan diffraction evidenced the growth of the films with fourfold symmetry. AFM study shows that the films are homogeneous, dense and present a smooth surface. The refractive index and optical losses were strongly influenced by the degree of crystallinity. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The nonlinear (NL) response of lead-germanium oxide amorphous films was investigated using a Ti:saphire laser delivering pulses of approximate to 150 fs at 800 nm. The Kerr shutter technique was employed to reveal the time response of the nonlinearity that is smaller than 150 fs. The sign and magnitude of the nonlinearity were obtained using a novel technique called thermally managed eclipse Z scan which allows the simultaneous characterization of cumulative and noncumulative NL effects. The NL refractive index of electronic origin, n(2)approximate to 2x10(-17) m(2)/W, and the NL absorption coefficient, alpha(2)approximate to 3x10(3) cm/GW, were determined. We investigate the linear optical properties and energy transfer processes in tungstate fluorophosphate glass doped with thulium (Tm3+) and neodymium (Nd3+) ions. The linear absorption spectra from 370 to 3000 nm were obtained. Transitions probabilities, radiative lifetimes, and transition branching ratios were determined using the Judd-Ofelt [Phys. Rev. 127, 750 (1962); J. Chem. Phys. 37, 511 (1962)] theory. Frequency up-conversion to the blue region and fluorescence in the infrared were observed upon pulsed excitation in the range of 630-700 nm. The excitation spectra of the luminescence were obtained to understand the origin of the signals. The temporal decay of the fluorescence was measured for different concentrations of the doping ions. Energy transfer rates among the Tm3+ and Nd3+ ions were also determined.

In this work, we present a new photochromic tungstate based glass which have both absorption coefficient and refractive index modified under laser exposure. The photosensitive effect is superficial under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation but occurs in the entire volume of the glass under visible irradiation. The effect can be obtained in any specific point inside the volume using an infrared femtosecond laser. In addition, the photosensitive phenomenon can be erased by specific heat treatment. This glass can be useful to substitute actual data storage supports and is a promising material for 3-dimensional (3D) and holographic optical storage.

The use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a substrate to selectively retain Sn(II) and Sn(IV) has been investigated. Several factors affecting the retention of the analytes by yeast, such as pH, amount of biomass, temperature and time of contact were evaluated. Based on this study, a method for determination of Sn(II) and Sn(IV) combining inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) and solid phase extraction using Saccharomyces cerevisiae is proposed. The procedure consists of the selective retention of Sn(IV) by yeast at pH = 2.0 while Sn(II) remains in solution. Determination of tin in the solid phase was easily carried out by submitting a slurry of the yeast (0.5 g/40 mL) directly to ICP OES. The precision of the extraction procedure was characterized by an RSD lower than 4%. The detection limits of tin (3 sigma) in the solid phase and the liquid phase were 1.1 and 0.7 mu g L-1, respectively. The proposed approach was evaluated for determination of Sn(II) and Sn(IV) in spiked river water and real samples of industrial waste water (untreated and treated). For all samples, recoveries of spiked Sn(II) and Sn(IV) were between 85 and 112%.
