Current technology trends in medical device industry calls for fabrication of massive arrays of microfeatures such as microchannels on to nonsilicon material substrates with high accuracy, superior precision, and high throughput. Microchannels are typical features used in medical devices for medication dosing into the human body, analyzing DNA arrays or cell cultures. In this study, the capabilities of machining systems for micro-end milling have been evaluated by conducting experiments, regression modeling, and response surface methodology. In machining experiments by using micromilling, arrays of microchannels are fabricated on aluminium and titanium plates, and the feature size and accuracy (width and depth) and surface roughness are measured. Multicriteria decision making for material and process parameters selection for desired accuracy is investigated by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) method, which is an evolutionary computation method inspired by genetic algorithms (GA). Appropriate regression models are utilized within the PSO and optimum selection of micromilling parameters; microchannel feature accuracy and surface roughness are performed. An analysis for optimal micromachining parameters in decision variable space is also conducted. This study demonstrates the advantages of evolutionary computing algorithms in micromilling decision making and process optimization investigations and can be expanded to other applications

In this paper, we report a preliminary analysis of the impact of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflections (GNSS-R) data on ionospheric monitoring over the oceans. The focus will be on a single polar Low Earth Orbiter (LEO) mission exploiting GNSS-R as well as Navigation (GNSS-N) and Occultation (GNSS-O) total electron content (TEC) measurements. In order to assess impact of the data, we have simulated GNSS-R/O/N TEC data as would be measured from the LEO and from International Geodesic Service (IGS) ground stations, with an electron density (ED) field generated using a climatic ionospheric model. We have also developed a new tomographic approach inspired by the physics of the hydrogen atom and used it to effectively retrieve the ED field from the simulated TEC data near the orbital plane. The tomographic inversion results demonstrate the significant impact of GNSS-R: three-dimensional ionospheric ED fields are retrieved over the oceans quite accurately, even as, in the spirit of this initial study, the simulation and inversion approaches avoided intensive computation and sophisticated algorithmic elements (such as spatio-temporal smoothing). We conclude that GNSS-R data over the oceans can contribute significantly to a Global/GNSS Ionospheric Observation System (GIOS). This paper proposes the use of an autonomous assistant mobile robot in order to monitor the environmental conditions of a large indoor area and develop an ambient intelligence application. The mobile robot uses single high performance embedded sensors in order to collect and geo-reference environmental information such as ambient temperature, air velocity and orientation and gas concentration. The data collected with the assistant mobile robot is analyzed in order to detect unusual measurements or discrepancies and develop focused corrective ambient actions. This paper shows an example of the measurements performed in a research facility which have enabled the detection and location of an uncomfortable temperature profile inside an office of the research facility. The ambient intelligent application has been developed by performing some localized ambient measurements that have been analyzed in order to propose some ambient actuations to correct the uncomfortable temperature profile.

La robòtica està experimentant un gran auge, amb el disseny de màquines cada cop més sofisticades i complexes pel que fa a les funcions que poden dur a terme i a la capacitat d'interacció amb les persones. Molta inspiració ve de la natura. Un dels reptes actuals és optimitzar els sistemes que controlen el moviment de les extremitats perquè permetin ajustar la velocitat i la coordinació de manera precisa i ràpida. Anna N. Ahn i els seus col·laboradors, dels departaments de biologia i d'enginyeria del Pitzer College i del Harvey Mudd College de Claremont, als EUA, han proposat un sistema de control basat en el moviment de les extremitats de les aranyes. Concretament, han estudiat la locomoció hidràulica de les taràntules, que es veu afectada per la temperatura, segons han publicat a The Journal of Experimental Biology.

Energiatehokkuus sekä ilmastonmuutos ovat aiheuttaneet pyrkimyksen vähentää kokonaisenergiankulutuksia erilaisissa rakennuksissa. Lämmitysjärjestelmissä tämä on näkynyt voimakkaana lämpöpumppumäärien kasvuna. Lämpöpumput vaikuttavat erilaisissa rakennus- ja lämmitystyypeissä myös sähköenergiankulutukseen. Lämpöpumppujen käytöstä saadaan eniten hyötyä lämmityskustannuksiin sähkölämmitteisissä rakennuksissa. Seurauksena on, että tällaisen rakennuksen sähkönkulutus ja siten myös sähkölasku pienenevät. Toisaalta muihin kuin sähkölämmitteisiin rakennuksiin asennettu lämpöpumppu kasvattaa sähköenergiankulutusta. Lämpöpumppuihin integroitu jäähdytysominaisuus myös tavallisesti lisää sähkönkulutusta. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, kuinka lämpöpumput vaikuttavat sähköenergiankulutukseen. Vaikutuksia tutkitaan sähköverkkoyhtiöiden kannalta sähköenergian ja liikevaihdon osalta. Tarkastelussa käytetään neljää yleisintä lämpöpumpputyyppiä, ja niiden toimintaa verrataan eri rakennustyyppien lämmitysjärjestelmiin. Työssä käsitellään lämpöpumppujen toimintaa ja käytettävyyttä muiden lämmitysmenetelmien korvaajina tai lisänä. Tämän kirjallisen työn lisäksi on tehty laskentaohjelma, joka on perusteena työssä esitetyille tuloksille. Sen tarkoituksena on selvittää lämpöpumppujen vaikutukset sähköverkkoliiketoimintaan energiayhtiöissä. Vaikutukset yksittäiseen energiayhtiöön ovat eniten riippuvaisia lämpöpumppujen asennuskohteista, lämpöpumppujen toiminnasta ja lämpöpumpputyypistä. Kuluttajat tulevat määräämään vaikutusten suuruuden, koska lämpöpumppujen lukumäärällä ja käytöllä on sähköenergiankulutukseen huomattava merkitys. Vaikutus sähköenergiaan energiayhtiöiden kannalta voi yleisesti ottaen olla 2020-luvulle mentäessä merkittävä. Tutkittavassa verkkoyhtiössä vaikutuksen sähköenergiaan arvioidaan olevan 10 % luokkaa yhdeltä vuodelta verrattuna tämän päivän kokonaissähköenergiankulutukseen. Vaikutus verkkoliikevaihtoon on arviolta puolet pienempi. Tällaiset tulokset edellyttävät lämpöpumppumäärän moninkertaistumista nykyisestä, mikä on myös odotettavissa.

The analysis of efficiency and productivity in banking has received a great deal of attention for almost three decades now. However, most of the literature to date has not explicitly accounted for risk when measuring efficiency. We propose an analysis of profit efficiency taking into account how the inclusion of a variety of bank risk measures might bias efficiency scores. Our measures of risk are partly inspired by the literature on earnings management and earnings quality, keeping in mind that loan loss provisions, as a generally accepted proxy for risk, can be adjusted to manage earnings and regulatory capital. We also consider some variants of traditional models of profit efficiency where different regimes are stipulated so that financial institutions can be evaluated in different dimensions—i.e., prices, quantities, or prices and quantities simultaneously. We perform this analysis on the Spanish banking industry, whose institutions have been deeply affected by the current international financial crisis, and where re-regulation is taking place. Our results can be explored in multiple dimensions but, in general, they indicate that the impact of earnings management on profit efficiency is of less magnitude than what might a priori be expected, and that on the whole, savings banks have performed less well than commercial banks. However, savings banks are adapting to the new regulatory scenario and rapidly catching up with commercial banks, especially in some dimensions of performance.

Inspired by the structure and biological activities of resorcinolic lipids and, particularly cytosporone A- a potent inhibitor of plantule germination and growth, we have performed the synthesis of the analogs 3-heptyl-3-hydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one (1) and 3-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxy-2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one (2). The intermediates and products were submitted to allelopathic test using Lactuca sativa L. seeds. Target compound 1 showed an inhibitory effect on germination and growth of hypocotyl and radicle in milimolar range.

As podridões pós-colheita podem ocasionar perdas substanciais em maçãs (Malus domestica). O mofo azul (Penicillium expansum), a podridão amarga (Glomerella cingulata) e a podridão olho-de-boi (Pezicula malicorticis) estão entre as mais comuns. Grande atenção tem sido dada ao uso de alternativas de controle às doenças pós-colheita. A aplicação pós-colheita de leveduras, como o Cryptococcus laurentii, é uma das opções. Neste estudo testou-se a eficiência de C. laurentii (isolado 36) para o controle de podridões em maçãs 'Fuji' e 'Gala'. Após aplicação dos produtos, através de imersão, os frutos foram armazenados em laboratório (15-20 ºC / 60-70% UR) ou em câmara fria (1 ºC / 90-95% UR). Os patógenos foram inoculados na concentração de 10² conídios ml-1, a levedura a 10(7) células ml-1 e os fungicidas a 150 mg l-1. Em testes de laboratório, a aplicação de C. laurentii reduziu as podridões (G. cingulata, P. expansum e P. malicorticis) da maçã tanto quanto os fungicidas testados (thiabendazol e iprodione). Nos testes efetuados em câmara fria, constatou-se que, após o armazenamento, o tratamento de maçãs com C. laurentii foi tão eficiente quanto os tratamentos com fungicidas (thiabendazol, iprodione, digluconato de clorohexidina, dicloro-s-triazinatriona sódica, dicloroisocianurato de sódio e hipoclorito de sódio) na redução da podridão causada por P. expansum. Aplicação de C. laurentii não alterou a firmeza de polpa nem o teor de sólidos solúveis totais (°Brix) dos frutos.

In the modern warfare there is an active development of a new trend connected with a robotic warfare. One of the critical elements of robotics warfare systems is an automatic target recognition system, allowing to recognize objects, based on the data received from sensors. This work considers aspects of optical realization of such a system by means of NIR target scanning at fixed wavelengths. An algorithm was designed, an experimental setup was built and samples of various modern gear and apparel materials were tested. For pattern testing the samples of actively arm engaged armies camouflages were chosen. Tests were performed both in clear atmosphere and in the artificial extremely humid and hot atmosphere to simulate field conditions.

Tässä diplomityössä esitellään robotisoinnin teoria ja robottisolun oheislaitteet, vaihtoehdot, toiminta ja turvallisuus. Joustavalla tuotantosolulla tarkoitetaan automaattista valmistusjärjestelmää, jossa on useita toisiinsa liitettyjä koneita yhteisellä ohjausjärjestelmällä. Solun komponentteja ovat tuotantolaitteet ja -koneet, ohjausjärjestelmät, valvontalaitteet ja anturit, toimi- ja säätölaitteet sekä ohjelmointijärjestelmä. Joustavaa tuotantosolua voidaan kehittää tehostamalla työntekijöiden koulutusta, ohjelmointia, asetusten tekemistä ja layouttia. Diplomityöhön liittyvä kehitystehtävä koskee heinäveteläisen alihankintakonepajan, Metalliset Oy:n, tuotannon tehostamista robotisoinnin avulla. Metalliset Oy:n joustavan särmäyssolun kehittämiskeinoiksi valittiin nykyisen järjestelmän tehostaminen, uuden tuotantosolun luominen olemassa olevia laitteita hyödyntäen ja tulevaisuuden tuotantosolun kehittäminen. Vertailussa parhaimmaksi osoittautui uuden tuotantosolun luominen olemassa olevia laitteita hyödyntäen.

Robotin ohjelmointi on aikaa vievää ja tarvitsee robotin ohjelmoinnin tuntevan operaattorin toimimaan robotin opettajana. Saadakseen robottisolun kustannustehokkaaksi operaattorilla olisi hyvä olla useampi solu hoidettavanaan samaan aikaan. Tämä ei ole suuri ongelma suurille yrityksille, joissa voi olla kymmeniä robottisoluja. Jos kyseessä on pieni tai keskisuuri yritys, automatisointi-investointi voi jäädä tekemättä ohjelmoinnin vaikeuden aiheuttaman ongelman vuoksi. Diplomityössä keskityttiin tutkimaan robotisointia pienten ja keskisuurten yritysten kannalta. Teoriaosassa on keskitytty robottisolun suunnittelun kannalta tarvittaviin perustietoihin robotin rakenteesta, ohjausjärjestelmästä, ohjelmoinnista sekä turvallisuudesta. Näiden perustietojen lisäksi on huomioitu hitsauksen automatisointia sekä taluttamalla ohjelmoitavan robottisolun tekninen konsepti. Taluttamalla ohjelmoitavan robottisolun konseptin käsittelyosassa on myös perehdytty taluttamalla ohjelmoinnin vaatimiin komponentteihin kuten voima/vääntö-anturi. Robottisolun suunnittelu on tehtävä koneasetuksen vaatimusten mukaan. Turvallisuus osiossa on käsitelty koneasetuksen vaatimuksia koneensuunnittelulle ja käytännön osassa on käsitelty Winnovan taluttamalla ohjelmoitavan robottisolun suunnittelua koneasetuksen ohjeiden mukaan. Käytännön osassa on tutkittu taluttamalla ohjelmoinnin tuomia etuja muihin ohjelmointimenetelmiin nähden sekä suoritettu investointilaskelmat taluttamalla ohjelmoitavasta ja opettamalla ohjelmoitavasta robottisolusta. Koetuloksista nähdään taluttamalla ohjelmoinnin olevan nopeampi ja yksinkertaisempi tapa ohjelmoida robottia kuin opettamalla ohjelmointi. Investointilaskelmien vertailusta nähdään taluttamalla ohjelmoinnin tulevan opettamalla ohjelmointia edullisemmaksi vaihtoehdoksi käyttökustannusten edullisuuden ansiosta.

This thesis describes the design and implementation of a graphical application on a mobile device to teleoperate a mobile robot. The department of information technology in Lappeenranta University conducts research in robotics, and the main motivation was to extend the available teleoperation applications for mobile devices. The challenge was to port existing robot software library onto an embedded device platform, then develop a suitable user interface application that provides sufficient functionality to perform teleoperation tasks over a wireless communication network. This thesis involved investigating previous teleoperation applications and conducted similar experiments to test and evaluate the designed application for functional activity and measure performance on a mobile device which have been identified and achieved. The implemented solution offered good results for navigation purposes particularly for teleoperating a visible robot and suggests solutions for exploration when no environment map for the operator is present.

The article discusses how Nietzsche understands the institution of law and morals in distinction to Kant and the Christian tradition. It argues that Nietzsche to a large extent is inspired by the paradigm-shift toward a evolutionary biological thinking introduced by several of his peers in the late 19th century, among else F. A. Lange, who sees this shift as a sobering scientific-materialistic alternative to Kant. In Nietzsche, the Kantian moral imperative is replaced with a notion of a morality emerging thanks to historical, or pre-historical, civilizational processes, imposed on a feebleminded human without any inherent rational dispositions to obey Law. It is also a process, which rather than universalizing the human, splits it in a duality where one part obeys old immediate self-interests and another part obeys new 'commands,' having been shouted 'into the ear' by a so-called 'commander.' The compliance with law takes two radically different forms in Nietzsche: servile and mediocre individuals need to be exposed to discipline and punishment in order to adopt Law; while so-called 'sovereign' individuals are able to impose law upon themselves. The figure of the 'sovereign' has consequently been an issue for vigorous debate in especially the Anglo-Saxon tradition of Nietzsche research, since his apparent 'respect for law' and 'sense of duty' reiterate typical Kantian qualities. Relating to these discussions, I suggest that Nietzsche's 'sovereign' (in one context) is identical his 'commander' (in other contexts). When the 'sovereign' as such imposes law upon himself and others, his act is conventional and arbitrary (like language in Saussure), and is rather irrational than rational as in Kant. His will is not a good will, nor a rational will with a vision of human autonomy. His command of himself and others is a performative, thus without truth-value (like illocutionary speech-acts in Austin and Searle).

This thesis is about the educational purpose of foreign language teaching (FLT) in an increasingly internationalised world.The past 20-30 years have witnessed a fundamental rethinking of the aims of FLT, entailing a shift in emphasis from linguistic competence over communicative competence to intercultural competence. The growing emphasis on cultural issues, called for by research and international curricular documents, places new demandson language teachers. The overall aim of this study is to deepen the knowledge about the attitudes of teachers at the upper level of the Finland-Swedish comprehensive school towards the treatment of culture in English foreign language (EFL) teaching. The questions in focus are: 1) How do teachers interpret the concept"culture" in EFL-teaching?, 2) How do they specify the cultural objectives of their teaching? and 3) What do they do to attain these objectives? The thesis strives to reveal whether or not language teaching today can be describedas intercultural, in the sense that culture is taught with the aim of promotingintercultural understanding, tolerance and empathy. This abductive and largely exploratory study is placed within a constructivist and sociocultural framework,and is inspired by both phenomenography and hermeneutics. It takes its starting-point in language didactics, and can also be regarded as a contribution to teacher cognition research. The empirical data consists of verbatim transcribed interviews with 13 Finland-Swedish teachers of English at grades 7-9. The findings are presented according to three orientations and reviewed with reference to the 2004 Finnish National Framework Curriculum. Within the cognitive orientation, "culture" is perceived as factual knowledge, and the teaching of cultureis defined in terms of the transmission of knowledge, especially about Britain and the USA (Pedagogy of Information). Within the action-related orientation, "culture" is seen as skills of a social and socio-linguistic nature, andthe teaching aims at preparing the students for contacts with people from the target language areas (Pedagogy of Preparation). Within the affective orientation, which takes a more holistic approach, "culture" is seen as a bi-directional perspective. Students are encouraged to look at their own familiar culture from another perspective, and learn to empathise with and show respect for otherness in general, not just concerning representatives of English-speaking countries (Pedagogy of Encounter). Very few of the interviewed teachers represent the third approach, which is the one that can be characterised as truly intercultural. The study indicates that many teachers feel unsure about how to teach culture in an appropriate and up-to-date manner. This is attributed to, among other things, lack of teacher insights as well as lack of time and adequate material. The thesis ends with a set of recommendations as to how EFL could be developed ina more intercultural direction.
