Studies on the dilute solution properties of methylmethacrylate-acrylonitrile random copolymers of three different compositions, 0.236, 0.5 and 0.74 mole fraction (m.f.) of acrylonitrile (AN) designated as MAa, MAb and MAc, respectively, have been made in good solvents and theta solvents. MAa has been studied in benzene (Bz) and ethylacetate (EAc). MAb in acetonitrile (MeCN), dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and a binary solvent mixture of Bz and dimentyl formamide (DMF) in the volume ratio 6.5:1 designated as BM1 and MAc in MeCN, DMSO and Bz + DMF in the volume ratio 1.667:1 designated as BM2. The Mark-Houwink exponent ‘a’ reveals that Bz is a theta solvent for MAa at 20°C. For MAb and MAc, BM1 and BM2, respectively have ‘a’ values of 0.5 at all three temperatures studied (30°, 40° and 50°C). It is not clear whether they represent theta states or preferential adsorption plays a role complicating the behaviour in solution. The values of A2 are very low in MeCN considering that it is a very good solvent for the copolymer, ‘a’ values for MAb and MAc being 0.75 and 0.7, respectively.

In this paper we report the analysis of dc breakdown tests on mixtures of CC12F2, SF6, C-C4F8, 2-C4F8, N2, C02, CF4, CHF3, and 1,1,1-CH3CF3 gases on the basis of the NKH formula Vmix=k(pd)aNbUC developed by us earlier for the binary mixtures of SF6 with air, N2, N20, and CO2. It is shown that while a and c have the values 0.915 and 0.850 respectively as earlier, k and b depend on the component gases. There is a good agreement between the calculated values on the basis of the formula and measured values reported in the literature.

An EXAFS study at the AsK edge of the ternary glasses As2(S, Se)3 and As2(Se, Te)3 and the binary As2S3, As2Se3 and As2Te3 glasses has been carried out. Radial structure functions show that the environment of As in glasses of intermediate compositions is quite different from that in the binary glasses. In the As2(S, Se)3 system, this might arise from chemical disorder in the network while in the As2(Se, Te)3 system increased ionicity could be the cause of this behaviour. Glasses where the constituent atoms are of similar size seem to exhibit fewer peaks in the radial structure function.

Objective Death certificates provide an invaluable source for cancer mortality statistics; however, this value can only be realised if accurate, quantitative data can be extracted from certificates – an aim hampered by both the volume and variable nature of certificates written in natural language. This paper proposes an automatic classification system for identifying cancer related causes of death from death certificates. Methods Detailed features, including terms, n-grams and SNOMED CT concepts were extracted from a collection of 447,336 death certificates. These features were used to train Support Vector Machine classifiers (one classifier for each cancer type). The classifiers were deployed in a cascaded architecture: the first level identified the presence of cancer (i.e., binary cancer/nocancer) and the second level identified the type of cancer (according to the ICD-10 classification system). A held-out test set was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the classifiers according to precision, recall and F-measure. In addition, detailed feature analysis was performed to reveal the characteristics of a successful cancer classification model. Results The system was highly effective at identifying cancer as the underlying cause of death (F-measure 0.94). The system was also effective at determining the type of cancer for common cancers (F-measure 0.7). Rare cancers, for which there was little training data, were difficult to classify accurately (F-measure 0.12). Factors influencing performance were the amount of training data and certain ambiguous cancers (e.g., those in the stomach region). The feature analysis revealed a combination of features were important for cancer type classification, with SNOMED CT concept and oncology specific morphology features proving the most valuable. Conclusion The system proposed in this study provides automatic identification and characterisation of cancers from large collections of free-text death certificates. This allows organisations such as Cancer Registries to monitor and report on cancer mortality in a timely and accurate manner. In addition, the methods and findings are generally applicable beyond cancer classification and to other sources of medical text besides death certificates.

The highly variable flagellin-encoding flaA gene has long been used for genotyping Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. High-resolution melting (HRM) analysis is emerging as an efficient and robust method for discriminating DNA sequence variants. The objective of this study was to apply HRM analysis to flaA-based genotyping. The initial aim was to identify a suitable flaA fragment. It was found that the PCR primers commonly used to amplify the flaA short variable repeat (SVR) yielded a mixed PCR product unsuitable for HRM analysis. However, a PCR primer set composed of the upstream primer used to amplify the fragment used for flaA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and the downstream primer used for flaA SVR amplification generated a very pure PCR product, and this primer set was used for the remainder of the study. Eighty-seven C. jejuni and 15 C. coli isolates were analyzed by flaA HRM and also partial flaA sequencing. There were 47 flaA sequence variants, and all were resolved by HRM analysis. The isolates used had previously also been genotyped using single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), binary markers, CRISPR HRM, and flaA RFLP.flaA HRM analysis provided resolving power multiplicative to the SNPs, binary markers, and CRISPR HRM and largely concordant with the flaA RFLP. It was concluded that HRM analysis is a promising approach to genotyping based on highly variable genes.

Convex potential minimisation is the de facto approach to binary classification. However, Long and Servedio [2008] proved that under symmetric label noise (SLN), minimisation of any convex potential over a linear function class can result in classification performance equivalent to random guessing. This ostensibly shows that convex losses are not SLN-robust. In this paper, we propose a convex, classification-calibrated loss and prove that it is SLN-robust. The loss avoids the Long and Servedio [2008] result by virtue of being negatively unbounded. The loss is a modification of the hinge loss, where one does not clamp at zero; hence, we call it the unhinged loss. We show that the optimal unhinged solution is equivalent to that of a strongly regularised SVM, and is the limiting solution for any convex potential; this implies that strong l2 regularisation makes most standard learners SLN-robust. Experiments confirm the unhinged loss’ SLN-robustness.

The compounds Pb2PtO4 and PbPt2O4 were synthesized from an intimate mixture of yellow PbO and Pt metal powders by heating under pure oxygen gas at 973 K for periods up to 600 ks with intermediate grinding and recompacting. Both compounds were found to decompose on heating in pure oxygen to PbO and Pt, apparently in conflict with the requirements for equilibrium phase relations in the ternary system Pb–Pt–O. The oxygen chemical potential corresponding to the three-phase mixtures, Pb2PtO4 + PbO + Pt and PbPt2O4 + PbO + Pt were measured as a function of temperature using solid-state electrochemical cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at 0.1 MPa pressure as the reference electrode. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of the ternary oxides were derived from the measurements. Analysis of the results indicated that the equilibrium involving three condensed phases Pb2PtO4 + PbO + Pt is metastable. Under equilibrium conditions, Pb2PtO4 should have decomposed to a mixture of PbO and PbPt2O4. Measurement of the oxygen potential corresponding to this equilibrium decomposition as a function of temperature indicated that decomposition temperature in pure oxygen is 1014(±2) K. This was further confirmed by direct determination of phase relations in the ternary Pb–Pt–O by equilibrating several compositions at 1023 K for periods up to 850 ks and phase identification of quenched samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Only one ternary oxide PbPt2O4 was stable at 1023 K under equilibrium conditions. Alloys and intermetallic compounds along the Pb–Pt binary were in equilibrium with PbO.

A binary mixture of ammonium perchlorate-sodium nitrate in molar proportion undergoes partial fusion at 223°C and the transformation of the mixture to sodium perchlorate-ammonium nitrate occurs in the broad endothermic region. The mixture was heated and quenched at various temperatures in a differential thermal analysis assembly. Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopic techniques were used to determine the composition of the quenched sample in order to explain the overall thermal phenomenon. Visual observations of the morphological changes that occur during the course of heating were made using a hot-stage microscope, 30–350°C.

There is growing interest in the role that apex predators play in shaping terrestrial ecosystems and maintaining trophic cascades. In line with the mesopredator release hypothesis, Australian dingoes (Canis lupus dingo and hybrids) are assumed by many to regulate the abundance of invasive mesopredators, such as red foxes Vulpes vulpes and feral cats Felis catus, thereby providing indirect benefits to various threatened vertebrates. Several recent papers have claimed to provide evidence for the biodiversity benefits of dingoes in this way. Nevertheless, in this paper we highlight several critical weaknesses in the methodological approaches used in many of these reports, including lack of consideration for seasonal and habitat differences in activity, the complication of simple track-based indices by incorporating difficult-to-meet assumptions, and a reduction in sensitivity for assessing populations by using binary measures rather than potentially continuous measures. Of the 20 studies reviewed, 15 of them (75%) contained serious methodological flaws, which may partly explain the inconclusive nature of the literature nvestigating interactions between invasive Australian predators. We therefore assert that most of the “growing body of evidence” for mesopredator release is merely an inconclusive growing body of literature only. We encourage those interested in studying the ecological roles of dingoes relative to invasive mesopredators and native prey species to account for the factors we identify, and caution the value of studies that have not done so.

Nephrin is a transmembrane protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily and is expressed primarily in the podocytes, which are highly differentiated epithelial cells needed for primary urine formation in the kidney. Mutations leading to nephrin loss abrogate podocyte morphology, and result in massive protein loss into urine and consequent early death in humans carrying specific mutations in this gene. The disease phenotype is closely replicated in respective mouse models. The purpose of this thesis was to generate novel inducible mouse-lines, which allow targeted gene deletion in a time and tissue-specific manner. A proof of principle model for succesful gene therapy for this disease was generated, which allowed podocyte specific transgene replacement to rescue gene deficient mice from perinatal lethality. Furthermore, the phenotypic consequences of nephrin restoration in the kidney and nephrin deficiency in the testis, brain and pancreas in rescued mice were investigated. A novel podocyte-specific construct was achieved by using standard cloning techniques to provide an inducible tool for in vitro and in vivo gene targeting. Using modified constructs and microinjection procedures two novel transgenic mouse-lines were generated. First, a mouse-line with doxycycline inducible expression of Cre recombinase that allows podocyte-specific gene deletion was generated. Second, a mouse-line with doxycycline inducible expression of rat nephrin, which allows podocyte-specific nephrin over-expression was made. Furthermore, it was possible to rescue nephrin deficient mice from perinatal lethality by cross-breeding them with a mouse-line with inducible rat nephrin expression that restored the missing endogenous nephrin only in the kidney after doxycycline treatment. The rescued mice were smaller, infertile, showed genital malformations and developed distinct histological abnormalities in the kidney with an altered molecular composition of the podocytes. Histological changes were also found in the testis, cerebellum and pancreas. The expression of another molecule with limited tissue expression, densin, was localized to the plasma membranes of Sertoli cells in the testis by immunofluorescence staining. Densin may be an essential adherens junction protein between Sertoli cells and developing germ cells and these junctions share similar protein assembly with kidney podocytes. This single, binary conditional construct serves as a cost- and time-efficient tool to increase the understanding of podocyte-specific key proteins in health and disease. The results verified a tightly controlled inducible podocyte-specific transgene expression in vitro and in vivo as expected. These novel mouse-lines with doxycycline inducible Cre recombinase and with rat nephrin expression will be useful for conditional gene targeting of essential podocyte proteins and to study in detail their functions in the adult mice. This is important for future diagnostic and pharmacologic development platforms.

New dimensionally consistent modified solvate complex models are derived to correlate solubilities of solids in supercritical fluids both in the presence and absence of entrainers (cosolvents). These models are compared against the standard solvate complex models [J.Chrastil, J. Phys. Chem. 86 (1982) 3016-3021; J.C. Gonzalez, M.R.Vieytes, A.M. Botana, J.M. Vieites, L.M. Botana, J. Chromatogr. A 910 (2001) 119-125; Y. Adachi, B.C.Y. Lu, Fluid Phase Equilb. 14 (1983) 47-156; J.M. del Valle, J.M. Aguilera, Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 27 (1988) 1551-1553] by correlating the solubilities of 13 binary and 12 ternary systems. A period timing device suitable for processing laser Doppler anemometer signals has been described here. The important features of this instrument are: it is inexpensive, simple to operate, and easy to fabricate. When the concentration of scattering particles is low the Doppler signal is in the form of a burst and the Doppler frequency is measured by timing the zero crossings of the signal. But the presence of noise calls for the use of validation criterion, and a 5–8 cycles comparison has been used in this instrument. Validation criterion requires the differential count between the 5 and 8 cycles to be multiplied by predetermined numbers that prescribe the accuracy of measurement. By choosing these numbers to be binary numbers, much simplification in circuit design has been accomplished since this permits the use of shift registers for multiplication. Validation accuracies of 1.6%, 3.2%, 6.3%, and 12.5% are possible with this device. The design presented here is for a 16-bit processor and uses TTL components. By substituting Schottky barrier TTLs the clock frequency can be increased from about 10 to 30 MHz resulting in an extension in the range of the instrument. The paper reports a detailed determination of the coexistence curve for the binary liquid system acetonitrile+cyclohexane, which have very closely matched densities and the data points get affected by gravity only for t=(Tc−T)/ Tc[approximately-equal-to]10−6. About 100 samples were measured over the range 10−6binary liquids. The extrapolation properties of the Wegner expansion procedure is somewhat inferior to the extrapolation obtained using a renormalization group (RG) crossover expansion. The use of the new variables proposed by Johnston et al. and Vnuk in making the coexistence curve appear symmetric in the new variables is pointed out. One of the applications of nanomaterials is as reinforcements in composites, wherein small additions of nanomaterials lead to large enhancements in mechanical properties. There have been extensive studies in the literature on composites where a polymer matrix is reinforced by a single nanomaterial such as carbon nanotubes. In this article, we examine the significant synergistic effects observed when 2 different types of nanocarbons are incorporated in a polymer matrix. Thus, binary combinations of nanodiamond, few-layer graphene, and single-walled nanotubes have been used to reinforce polyvinyl alcohol. The mechanical properties of the resulting composites, evaluated by the nanoindentation technique, show extraordinary synergy, improving the stiffness and hardness by as much as 400% compared to those obtained with single nanocarbon reinforcements. These results suggest a way of designing advanced materials with extraordinary mechanical properties by incorporating small amounts of 2 nanomaterials such as graphene plus nanodiamond or nanodiamond plus carbon nanotube.

The present study investigated the potato starches and polyols which were used to prepare edible films. The amylose content and the gelatinization properties of various potato starches extracted from different potato cultivars were determined. The amylose content of potato starches varied between 11.9 and 20.1%. Onset temperatures of gelatinization of potato starches in excess water varied independently of the amylose content from 58 to 61°C determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The crystallinity of selected native starches with low, medium and high amylose content was determined by X-ray diffraction. The relative crystallinity was found to be around 10 13% in selected native potato starches containing 13 17% water. The glass transition temperature, crystallization melting behavior and relaxations of polyols, erythritol, sorbitol and xylitol, were determined using (DSC), dielectric analysis (DEA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The glass transition temperatures of xylitol and sorbitol decreased as a result of water plasticization. Anhydrous amorphous erythritol crystallized rapidly. Edible films were obtained from solutions containing gelatinized starch, plasticizer (polyol or binary polyol mixture) and water by casting and evaporating water at 35°C. The present study investigated effects of plasticizer type and content on physical and mechanical properties of edible films stored at various relative water vapor pressures (RVP). The crystallinity of edible films with low, medium and high amylose content was determined by X-ray diffraction and they were found to be practically amorphous. Water sorption and water vapor permeability (WVP) of films was affected by the type and content of plasticizer. Water vapor permeability of films increased with increasing plasticizer content and storage RVP. Generally, Young's modulus and tensile strength decreased with increasing plasticizer and water content with a concurrent increase in elongation at break of films. High contents of xylitol and sorbitol resulted in changes in physical and mechanical properties of films probably due to phase separation and crystallization of xylitol and sorbitol which was not observed when binary polyol mixtures were used as plasticizers. The mechanical properties and the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films were found to be independent of the amylose content.
