We present a purposeful initiative to open new grounds for teaching Geometrical Optics. It is based on the creation of an innovative education networking involving academic staff from three Spanish universities linked together around Optics. Nowadays, students demand online resources such as innovative multimedia tools for complementing the understanding of their studies. Geometrical Optics relies on basics of light phenomena like reflection and refraction and the use of simple optical elements such as mirrors, prisms, lenses, and fibers. The mathematical treatment is simple and the equations are not too complicated. But from our long time experience in teaching to undergraduate students, we realize that important concepts are missed by these students because they do not work ray tracing as they should do. Moreover, Geometrical Optics laboratory is crucial by providing many short Optics experiments and thus stimulating students interest in the study of such a topic. Multimedia applications help teachers to cover those student demands. In that sense, our educational networking shares and develops online materials based on 1) video-tutorials of laboratory experiences and of ray tracing exercises, 2) different online platforms for student self-examinations and 3) computer assisted geometrical optics exercises. That will result in interesting educational synergies and promote student autonomy for learning Optics.

El plagio académico entre el alumnado universitario puede entenderse de varias formas; por ejemplo el uso de un material de otra fuente haciéndolo pasar como propio (bien completo o por partes) sin proporcionar las correspondientes referencias o, también, la presentación del trabajo de otro estudiante o compañero, con o sin el conocimiento de esa persona. Existe bastante acuerdo en la literatura sobre el desconcierto del propio alumnado sobre lo que constituye plagio y lo que no. Muchas universidades han puesto en marcha mecanismos para evitar el plagio, sin embargo muy pocos han sido evaluados. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la eficacia de una intervención educativa destinada a aumentar el conocimiento de los estudiantes universitarios acerca del plagio. Para ello se ha realizado un estudio cuasi-experimental mediante encuesta transversal en un diseño pre-post intervención con 75 alumnos matriculados en dos asignaturas de dos titulaciones diferentes de la Universidad de Alicante. La intervención fue realizada por los profesores responsables con un material elaborado a partir de los contenidos de la propia universidad. Los resultados muestran que los participantes carecen de formación previa sobre este tema; destacando el auto-plagio, qué se debe citar y cómo. También resaltan la importancia de la formación para poder prevenir y, de esta forma, mejorar la integridad académica.

En el escenario actual, la disponibilidad de nuevas herramientas multimedia favorece la generación de materiales docentes con características diferenciales respecto a los tradicionalmente dispuestos. Las nuevas tecnologías y las redes sociales permiten la difusión de los contenidos, siendo mayor la aceptación por parte del alumnado cuanto más atractiva sea su presentación. Este fenómeno, bien diseñado y planteado puede resultar una herramienta útil como recurso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. El diseño de material docente que utilice estos recursos multimedia puede suponer, si se utiliza bien, un aliciente añadido para el alumno, de forma que, además de fomentar su interés por la materia, se puede potenciar su aprendizaje. En este contexto resulta de especial interés el diseño de herramientas a utilizar como material en formato de audio, vídeo u otros recursos electrónicos que estimulen el trabajo autónomo del estudiante. Pese a la buena planificación y diseño, la disponibilidad y/o elaboración de material docente de buena calidad, especialmente en el mundo audiovisual e interactivo en el que nos encontramos, supone una barrera a solventar.

Recent progress is emerging on nondiffracting subwavelength fields propagating in complex plasmonic nanostructures. In this paper, we present a thorough discussion on diffraction-free localized solutions of Maxwell’s equations in a periodic structure composed of nanowires. This self-focusing mechanism differs from others previously reported, which lie on regimes with ultraflat spatial dispersion. By means of the Maxwell–Garnett model, we provide a general analytical expression of the electromagnetic fields that can propagate along the direction of the cylinder’s axis, keeping its transverse waveform unaltered. Numerical simulations based on the finite element method support our analytical approach. In particular, moderate filling fractions of the metallic composite lead to nonresonant-plasmonic spots of light propagating with a size that remains far below the limit of diffraction.

El aprendizaje basado en problemas (ABP) permite a los estudiantes adquirir los conocimientos de forma autónoma, mediante la investigación y el autoaprendizaje. La red integra a profesores de tres universidades iberoamericanas: Universidad de Alicante (España), Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (Argentina) y Universidad de Montevideo (Uruguay). El objetivo de la red era crear una colección de problemas que fuera de utilidad para el estudio de la Farmacología. Se redactaron 11 problemas y se publicaron en formato libro ordenados por orden de dificultad creciente (“Casos de uso docente en Farmacología Clínica”, ISBN: 978-99-7471-410-6), posteriormente se publicó en Internet bajo licencia Creative Commons. Los problemas fueron elaborados de forma colaborativa por profesores de las tres universidades; fueron analizados por expertos en diferentes materias (psiquiatría, derecho, sociología) y después fueron aplicados a nivel grado (Criminología, Universidad de Alicante y Odontología, Universidad de Tucumán) y postgrado (Universidad de Montevideo). Profesores y estudiantes valoraron de forma positiva el resultado de la red, y el proceso seguido para elaborar y poner en práctica los problemas. El desarrollo de la red y los resultados conseguidos hacen presagiar la continuidad y su posible expansión a más profesores y más países de habla hispana.

Diurnal changes in corneal geometry, pachymetry, and intraocular pressure (IOP) in a healthy eye were recorded. The deformation response to an air puff was simulated using 3 levels of corneal stiffness. The response was dependent on IOP and pachymetry and not only on the biomechanical properties of the cornea. Similarly, the maximum variability due to the diurnal changes in pachymetry and IOP in the corneal displacement generated by the air puff was found to reach 5%. Therefore, diurnal changes in IOP and corneal thickness were able to induce some variability in the air puff–based corneal deformation response. This potential variability should be considered when the biomechanical properties of the cornea are analyzed with air-puff devices.

Purpose: To compare the manifest refractive cylinder (MRC) predictability of myopic astigmatism laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) between eyes with low and high ocular residual astigmatism (ORA). Setting: London Vision Clinic, London, United Kingdom. Design: Retrospective case study. Methods: The ORA was considered the vector difference between the MRC and the corneal astigmatism. The index of success (IoS), difference vector ÷ MRC, was analyzed for different groups as follows: stage 1, low ORA (ORA ÷ MRC <1), high ORA (ORA ÷ MRC ≥1); stage 2, low ORA group reduced to match the high ORA group for MRC; stage 3, grouped by ORA magnitude with low ORA (<0.50 diopters [D]), mid ORA (0.50 to 1.24 D), and high ORA (≥1.25 D); stage 4, high ORA group subdivided into low (<0.75 D) and high (≥0.75 D) corneal astigmatism. Results: For stage 1, the mean preoperative MRC and mean IoS were −1.32 D ± 0.65 (SD) (range −0.55 to −3.77 D) and 0.27, respectively, for low ORA and −0.79 ± 0.20 D (range −0.56 to −2.05 D) and 0.37, respectively, for high ORA. For stage 2, the mean IoS increased to 0.32 for low ORA. For stage 3, the mean IoS was 0.28, 0.29, and 0.31 for low ORA, mid ORA, and high ORA, respectively. For stage 4, the mean IoS was 0.20 for high ORA/low corneal astigmatism and 0.35 for high ORA/high corneal astigmatism. Conclusions: The MRC predictability was slightly worse in eyes with high ORA when grouped by the ORA ÷ MRC. Matching for the MRC and grouping by ORA magnitude resulted in similar predictability; however, eyes with high ORA and high corneal astigmatism were less predictable.

Background: The aim was to evaluate the visual performance achieved with a new multifocal hybrid contact lens and to compare it with that obtained with two other currently available multifocal soft contact lenses. Methods: This pilot prospective comparative study comprised a total of 16 presbyopic eyes of eight patients ranging in age from 43 to 58 years. All patients were fitted with three different models of multifocal contact lens: Duette multifocal (SynergEyes), Air Optix AQUA multifocal (Alcon) and Biofinity multifocal (CooperVision). Fittings were performed randomly in each patient according to a random number sequence, with a wash-out period between fittings of seven days. At two weeks post-fitting, visual, photopic contrast sensitivity and ocular aberrometry were evaluated. Results: No statistically significant differences were found in distance and near visual acuity achieved with the three different types of multifocal contact lens (p ≥ 0.05). Likewise, no significant differences between lenses were found in the monocular and binocular defocus curve (p ≥ 0.10). Concerning contrast sensitivity, better monocular contrast sensitivities for 6, 12 and 18 cycles per degree were found with the Duette and Air Optix multifocal compared to Biofinity (p = 0.02). Binocularly, differences between lenses were not significant (p ≥ 0.27). Furthermore, trefoil aberration was significantly higher with Biofinity multifocal (p < 0.01) and Air Optix (p = 0.01) multifocal compared to Duette. Conclusions: The Duette multifocal hybrid contact lens seems to provide similar visual quality outcomes in presbyopic patients with low corneal astigmatism, when compared with other soft multifocal contact lenses. This preliminary result should be confirmed in studies with larger samples.

Purpose. We aimed to characterize the distribution of the vector parameters ocular residual astigmatism (ORA) and topography disparity (TD) in a sample of clinical and subclinical keratoconus eyes, and to evaluate their diagnostic value to discriminate between these conditions and healthy corneas. Methods. This study comprised a total of 43 keratoconic eyes (27 patients, 17–73 years) (keratoconus group), 11 subclinical keratoconus eyes (eight patients, 11–54 years) (subclinical keratoconus group) and 101 healthy eyes (101 patients, 15–64 years) (control group). In all cases, a complete corneal analysis was performed using a Scheimpflug photography-based topography system. Anterior corneal topographic data was imported from it to the iASSORT software (ASSORT Pty. Ltd), which allowed the calculation of ORA and TD. Results. Mean magnitude of the ORA was 3.23 ± 2.38, 1.16 ± 0.50 and 0.79 ± 0.43 D in the keratoconus, subclinical keratoconus and control groups, respectively (p < 0.001). Mean magnitude of the TD was 9.04 ± 8.08, 2.69 ± 2.42 and 0.89 ± 0.50 D in the keratoconus, subclinical keratoconus and control groups, respectively (p < 0.001). Good diagnostic performance of ORA (cutoff point: 1.21 D, sensitivity 83.7 %, specificity 87.1 %) and TD (cutoff point: 1.64 D, sensitivity 93.3 %, specificity 92.1 %) was found for the detection of keratoconus. The diagnostic ability of these parameters for the detection of subclinical keratoconus was more limited (ORA: cutoff 1.17 D, sensitivity 60.0 %, specificity 84.2 %; TD: cutoff 1.29 D, sensitivity 80.0 %, specificity 80.2 %). Conclusion. The vector parameters ORA and TD are able to discriminate with good levels of precision between keratoconus and healthy corneas. For the detection of subclinical keratoconus, only TD seems to be valid.

Measurement of concrete strain through non-invasive methods is of great importance in civil engineering and structural analysis. Traditional methods use laser speckle and high quality cameras that may result too expensive for many applications. Here we present a method for measuring concrete deformations with a standard reflex camera and image processing for tracking objects in the concretes surface. Two different approaches are presented here. In the first one, on-purpose objects are drawn on the surface, while on the second one we track small defects on the surface due to air bubbles in the hardening process. The method has been tested on a concrete sample under several loading/unloading cycles. A stop-motion sequence of the process has been captured and analyzed. Results have been successfully compared with the values given by a strain gauge. Accuracy of our methods in tracking objects is below 8 μm, in the order of more expensive commercial devices.

Objective: To assess the usefulness of microperimetry (MP) as an additional objective method for characterizing the fixation pattern in nystagmus. Design: Prospective study. Participants: Fifteen eyes of 8 subjects (age, 12–80 years) with nystagmus from the Lluís Alcanyís Foundation (University of Valencia, Spain) were included. Methods: All patients had a comprehensive ophthalmologic examination including a microperimetric examination (MAIA, CenterVue, Padova, Italy). The following microperimetric parameters were evaluated: average threshold (AT), macular integrity index (MI), fixating points within a circle of 1° (P1) and 2° of radius (P2), bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA) considering 63% and 95% of fixating points, and horizontal and vertical axes of that ellipse. Results: In monocular conditions, 6 eyes showed a fixation classified as stable, 6 eyes showed a relatively unstable fixation, and 3 eyes showed an unstable fixation. Statistically significant differences were found between the horizontal and vertical components of movement (p = 0.001), as well as in their ranges (p < 0.001). Intereye comparison showed differences between eyes in some subjects, but only statistically significant differences were found in the fixation coordinates X and Y (p < 0.001). No significant intereye differences were found between microperimetric parameters. Between monocular and binocular conditions, statistically significant differences in the X and Y coordinates were found in all eyes (p < 0.02) except one. No significant differences were found between MP parameters for monocular or binocular conditions. Strong correlations of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) with AT (r = 0.812, p = 0.014), MI (r = –0.812, p = 0.014), P1 (r = 0.729, p = 0.002), horizontal diameter of BCEA (r = –0.700, p = 0.004), and X range (r = –0.722, p = 0.005) were found. Conclusions: MP seems to be a useful technology for the characterization of the fixation pattern in nystagmus, which seems to be related to the level of visual acuity achieved by the patient.

Para los usuarios de iPad: al bajar el archivo epub desde la plataforma RUA directamente al dispositivo no se reconoce el formato, por lo que la aplicación ibooks no lo abre. Para evitarlo, recomendamos bajar el fichero en un ordenador y llevarlo al iPad, vía conexión por cable o a través de una nube de datos (la aplicación Dropbox es gratis).

El objetivo del presente estudio ha sido evaluar y analizar resultados tanto clínicos como teóricos para proporcionar un mayor entendimiento del funcionamiento de las lentes intraoculares (LIOs) trifocales. Para ello, se ha realizado una búsqueda bibliográfica, incluyendo tanto artículos de simulaciones en banco óptico como aquellos que muestran resultados clínicos. En la búsqueda se han encontrado artículos sobre tres LIOs trifocales: AT.LISA tri839MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec), FineVision (PhysIOL) y MIOL-Record (Repper-NN). En los estudios teóricos se ha demostrado que las LIOs trifocales presentan una mejora con respecto a las LIOs bifocales en cuanto a visión intermedia pero con una disminución en cuanto a calidad óptica en distancias lejanas y cercanas. Por el contrario, en cuanto a resultados clínicos, las LIOs trifocales proporcionan buenas agudezas visuales en visión lejana y agudezas visuales variables pero siempre aceptables en visión intermedia y cercana. En conclusión, LIOs trifocales ofrecen una opción a aquellos pacientes que necesitan trabajar en visión intermedia y buscan no tener que depender del uso de gafas tras cirugía de catarata.
