Articulated wooden blades for a horizontal-axis wind turbine. Design, construction and testing.

A pair of blades were constructed following a Tapered Chord, Zero Twist pattern after Anderson. The construction uses the Wood Epoxy Saturation Technique, with a solid Beech main spar and leading edge joined together with laminated veneers of beech forming a D-section; the trailing edge is formed from millimetre ply skins, foam filled to resist compressive loads. This construction leads to an extremely light, flexible blade, with the centres of gravity and torsion well forward, giving good stability. Each blade has three built-in strain gauges, alowing flapwise bending to be measured. Stiffness, and natural frequencies, were measured, to input to a numerical computer model to calculate blade deformation during operation, and to determine stability boundaries of the blade. Preliminary aerodynamic performance measurements are presented and close agreement is found with theory.

Fabrication and testing of a high resolution extensometer based on resonant MEMS strain sensors

A novel type of linear extensometer with exceptionally high resolution of 4 nm based on MEMS resonant strain sensors bonded on steel and operating in a vacuum package is presented. The tool is implemented by means of a steel thin bar that can be pre-stressed in tension within two fixing anchors. The extension of the bar is detected by using two vacuum-packaged resonant MEMS double- ended tuning fork (DETF) sensors bonded on the bar with epoxy glue, one of which is utilized for temperature compensation. Both sensors are driven by a closed loop self-oscillating transresistance amplifier feedback scheme implemented on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board). On the same board, a microcontroller-based frequency measurement circuit is also implemented, which is able to count the square wave fronts of the MEMS oscillator output with a resolution of 20 nsec. The system provides a frequency noise of 0.2 Hz corresponding to an extension resolution of 4 nm for the extensometer. Nearly perfect temperature compensation of the frequency output is achieved in the temperature range 20-35 C using the reference sensor. © 2011 IEEE.

Structure and anti-HIV activity of micrandilactones B and C, new nortriterpenoids possessing a unique skeleton from Schisandra micrantha

Two new highly oxygenated nortriterpenoids with a unique norcycloartane skeleton, micrandilactones B and C (1-2), were isolated from Schisandra micrantha; micrandilactone C ( 2) exhibited an EC50 value of 7.71 mu g/mL (SI > 25.94) against HIV-1 replication with minimal cytotoxicity, and the potent anti-HIV-1 activity and unique structural features of 2 make it a promising lead for therapeutic development of a new generation of anti-HIV drug.

Anti HIV-1 agents 5: Synthesis and anti-HIV-1 activity of some N-arylsulfonyl-3-acetylindoles in vitro

In continuation of our program aimed at the discovery and development of compounds with superior anti-human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) activity, 21N-arylsulfonyl-3-acetylindole analogs (2a-u) were synthesized and preliminarily evaluated as HIV-1 inhibitors in vitro. Among of all the analogs, several compounds exhibited significant anti-HIV-1 activity, especially N-phenylsulfonyl-3-acetyl-6-methylindole (2j) and N-(p-ethyl)phenylsulfonyl-3-acetyl-6-methylindole (2n) showed the most potent anti-HIV-1 activity with EC50 values of 0.36 and 0.13 mu g/mL, and TI values of >555.55 and 791.85, respectively. Design and testing of a 250 kW medium-speed Brushless DFIG

This paper presents the design and testing of a 250 kW medium-speed Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (Brushless DFIG), and its associated power electronics and control systems. The experimental tests confirm the design, and show the system's steady-state and dynamic performance. The medium-speed Brushless DFIG in combination with a simplified two-stage gearbox promises a low-cost low-maintenance and reliable drive train for wind turbine applications.

Half-bridge SIC inverter for hybrid electric vehicles: Design, development and testing at higher operating temperature

In recent years, Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductor devices have shown promise for high density power electronic applications, due to their electrical and thermal properties. In this paper, the performance of SiC JFETs for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications is investigated at heatsink temperatures of 100 °C. The thermal runaway characteristics, maximum current density and packaging temperature limitations of the devices are considered and the efficiency implications discussed. To quantify the power density capabilities of power transistors, a novel 'expression of rating' (EoR) is proposed. A prototype single phase, half-bridge voltage source inverter using SiC JFETs is also tested and its performance at 25 °C and 100 °C investigated.

Design and testing of an ortho-planar micro-valve

This paper presents the production and testing of an ortho-planar one-way micro-valve. The main advantages of such valves are that they are very compact and can be made from a single flat piece of material. A previous paper presents and discusses a micro-valve assembly based on a spider spring. The present paper focuses on the valve assembly process and the valve performance..
