An operator formulation of the multiscale finite-volume method with correction function

The multiscale finite-volume (MSFV) method has been derived to efficiently solve large problems with spatially varying coefficients. The fine-scale problem is subdivided into local problems that can be solved separately and are coupled by a global problem. This algorithm, in consequence, shares some characteristics with two-level domain decomposition (DD) methods. However, the MSFV algorithm is different in that it incorporates a flux reconstruction step, which delivers a fine-scale mass conservative flux field without the need for iterating. This is achieved by the use of two overlapping coarse grids. The recently introduced correction function allows for a consistent handling of source terms, which makes the MSFV method a flexible algorithm that is applicable to a wide spectrum of problems. It is demonstrated that the MSFV operator, used to compute an approximate pressure solution, can be equivalently constructed by writing the Schur complement with a tangential approximation of a single-cell overlapping grid and incorporation of appropriate coarse-scale mass-balance equations.

A method for decision making with the OWA operator

A new method for decision making that uses the ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator in the aggregation of the information is presented. It is used a concept that it is known in the literature as the index of maximum and minimum level (IMAM). This index is based on distance measures and other techniques that are useful for decision making. By using the OWA operator in the IMAM, we form a new aggregation operator that we call the ordered weighted averaging index of maximum and minimum level (OWAIMAM) operator. The main advantage is that it provides a parameterized family of aggregation operators between the minimum and the maximum and a wide range of special cases. Then, the decision maker may take decisions according to his degree of optimism and considering ideals in the decision process. A further extension of this approach is presented by using hybrid averages and Choquet integrals. We also develop an application of the new approach in a multi-person decision-making problem regarding the selection of strategies.

Motor Grader Operator Maintenance of Granular Surfaced Roads : Tips from Iowa Operators, 1991

This booklet is a compilation of notes taken during motor grader operators workshops held at some 20 different locations throughout Iowa during the last two years. It is also the advice of 16 experienced motor grader operators and maintenance foremen (from 14 different counties around Iowa), who serve as instructors and assistant instructors at the "MoGo" workshops. The instructors have all said that they learn as much from the operators who attend the workshops as they impart. Motor grader operators from throughout Iowa have shown us new, innovative and better ways of maintaining gravel roads. This booklet is an attempt to pass on some of these "tips" that we have gathered from Iowa operators. It will need to be revised, corrected, and added to based on the advice we get from you, the operators who do the work here in Iowa.

New telecom services over next generation SDH

Our main aim in this report is to use Next generation SDH to solve the problem associated with the new telecom services. We have tried to analyze the different services and in this way identified some drawbacks which can be seen as hindrances in supporting these services. In this thesis we will first try to have idea of the past SDH technology and how the next generation SDH came into effect overriding the drawbacks of the past SDH technology. Our main concern throughout the report will be the way we can use next generation SDH to provide quality telecommunication services. In the section dealing with the telecommunication services through next generation SDH we will consider how we can transport Ethernet services through the Next generation SDH and what are the benefits to the customer and the service provider in using next generation SDH as a carrier. We will also see to improve to the ATM services through Next generation SDH. And finally towards the end I have identified some possible future work can be done in this area.

GPS-paikkatiedonliittäminen matkapuhelinpalveluihin

2000-luvun vaihteessa paikkatietoa hyödyntävistä matkapuhelinpalveluista odotettiin muodostuvan eräs merkittävimmistä kilpailuvalteista eri matkapuhelinoperaattoreiden välillä. Kiinnostusta paikkatietoa hyödyntäviin palveluihin lisäsi kaupallisten sovellusten lisäksi Yhdysvaltojen liittovaltioiden liikenneministeriön säätämä laki, joka velvoittaa paikantamaan yleiseen hätänumeroon soitetut puhelut. Erityisesti laite- ja verkkotoimittajat odottivat tämänluovan heille uusia markkinoita. Markkinoille tuli useita kilpailevia menetelmiä, joilla matkapuhelimia voitiin paikantaa. Suurin osa näistä menetelmistä hyödynsi GSM-verkon signalointia paikannuksen tekemiseen. Samaan aikaan kohonnut matkapuhelinten suorituskyky mahdollisti GPS-vastaanottimien integroinnin matkapuhelimiin ja ensimmäiset tällaiset matkapuhelimet ilmestyivät markkinoille. Matkapuhelinten paikantamiseen liittyvä standardointi on melko hajanaista. ETSI on standardoinut joukon erilaisia menetelmiä, joilla matkapuhelin paikkatieto voidaan selvittää. Nämä standardit eivät kuitenkaan määrittele sitä, kuinka paikkatieto siirretään sitä hyödyntävien palveluiden käyttöön. Paikkatiedonsiirtämiseen ja esittämiseen liittyvässä standardoinnissa eri laite- ja ohjelmistovalmistajat ovat tehneet liittoutumia keskenään ja esitelleet keskenään kilpailevia standardeja ja suosituksia. Tälläkään osa-alueella mikään liittoutuma ei ole saavuttanut määräävää markkina-asemaa. Tässä työssä suunniteltiin ja toteutettiin järjestelmä, jonka avulla voidaan paikantaa sellaisia GSM-päätelaitteita, joihin on integroitu GPS-vastaanotin. Toteutettu järjestelmä liitettiin uudeksi paikannusmenetelmäksi solupaikannuksen rinnalle Sonera Pointer paikannusjärjestelmään. Työn aikana testattiin joukko markkinoilla olleita GSM-puhelimia, joihin oli integroitu GPS-vastaanotin. Matkapuhelinten testauksessa erityinen huomio kiinnittyi siihen, kuinka GPS-paikkatieto saadaan siirrettyä matkapuhelimesta verkossa sijaitsevien sovellusten käyttöön. Toteutetun järjestelmän suunnittelussa täkein lähtökohta oli järjestelmän joustavuus. Standardien hajanaisuus ja osittainen puuttuminen aiheuttivat sen, että järjestelmästä oli tehtävä mahdollisimman helposti laajennettava. Toinen merkittävä suunnitteluun vaikuttanut tekijä oli operaattoririippumattomuus, koska Sonera Pointer järjestelmää oli tarkoitus myydä myös muille matkapuhelinoperaattoreille.

A prospective observational study comparing a non-operator dependent automatic PWV analyser to pulse pressure, in assessing arterial stiffness in hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) accelerates vascular stiffening related to age. Arterial stiffness may be evaluated measuring the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) or more simply, as recommended by KDOQI, monitoring pulse pressure (PP). Both correlate to survival and incidence of cardiovascular disease. PWV can also be estimated on the brachial artery using a Mobil-O-Graph; a non-operator dependent automatic device. The aim was to analyse whether, in a dialysis population, PWV obtained by Mobil-O-Graph (MogPWV) is more sensitive for vascular aging than PP. METHODS: A cohort of 143 patients from 4 dialysis units has been followed measuring MogPWV and PP every 3 to 6 months and compared to a control group with the same risk factors but an eGFR > 30 ml/min. RESULTS: MogPWV contrarily to PP did discriminate the dialysis population from the control group. The mean difference translated in age between the two populations was 8.4 years. The increase in MogPWV, as a function of age, was more rapid in the dialysis group. 13.3% of the dialysis patients but only 3.0% of the control group were outliers for MogPWV. The mortality rate (16 out of 143) was similar in outliers and inliers (7.4 and 8.0%/year). Stratifying patients according to MogPWV, a significant difference in survival was seen. A high parathormone (PTH) and to be dialysed for a hypertensive nephropathy were associated to a higher baseline MogPWV. CONCLUSIONS: Assessing PWV on the brachial artery using a Mobil-O-Graph is a valid and simple alternative, which, in the dialysis population, is more sensitive for vascular aging than PP. As demonstrated in previous studies PWV correlates to mortality. Among specific CKD risk factors only PTH is associated with a higher baseline PWV. BUSINESS CONCEPTS OF MOBILE VALUE-ADDED SERVICES FROM OPERATOR’S POINT OF VIEW

Tämä diplomityö on tehty Lappeenrannassa Telecom Business Research Centerin 5T-projektiin liittyen. Työssä tutkitaan matkaviestinnän lisäarvopalveluiden liiketoimintakonsepteja operaattoreiden näkökulmasta. Lisäarvopalvelut laajentavat operaattoreiden palveluvalikoimaa. Niiden osuuden telekommunikaatioalan yritysten ja erityisesti operaattoreiden tuotoista on ennustettu kasvavan huomattavasti. Työn tärkeimpänä tavoitteena on tuoda uusia näkökulmia ja lisätä ymmärrystä lisäarvopalveluiden liiketoimintakonseptin rakentamisprosessista. Tätä tietämystä käytetään edesauttamaan työn empiirisessä osuudessa tutkitun Content Gateway -tuotteen liiketoimintaa. Tarjoamalla nopean liitynnän ja laskutuskanavan ulkopuolisten palveluntarjoajien ja operaattorin välille tämä tuote mahdollistaa operaattorille ja palveluntarjoajille lisäarvopalveluiden liiketoiminnan käynnistämisen. Lisäarvopalveluiden arvonluontiprosessi vaatii lukuisia yhteistyötä tekeviä osapuolia, joiden yhteistoiminta on dynaamista ja tiedonvälitys avointa, interaktiivista ja nopeaa. Arvonluontiin liittyy myös monia konvergoituvia kehityssuuntia. Perinteinen arvoketjuajattelu on riittämätön uuteen, verkottuneeseen toimintaympäristöön ja sen tilalle on tullut modernimpi arvoverkostomalli. Arvoverkosto luo kilpailuetunsa muita verkostoja vastaan jakamalla resurssit ja kompetenssit optimaalisesti ja liittämällä strategisen ja operationaalisen johtamisen kulttuurit toisiinsa. Tässä työssä verrataan arvoverkoston teoreettisia tavoitteita kahteen lisäarvopalveluiden liiketoimintakonseptiin. Näistä ensimmäinen, i-mode –niminen konsepti on valittu vertailuun edistyksellisyytensä ja tulevaa kehitystä ennakoivien ominaispiirteidensä vuoksi. Toinen esimerkkikonsepti on rakennettu edellä mainitun Content Gateway -tuotteen ympärille. Tutkimus sisältää mm. liikekumppaneiden hankinnan, ansaintalogiikoiden ja verkostojen johtamisen analysoinnin. Työn tuloksena on saatu ohjeita siihen, miten operaattori voi rakentaa tällaista konseptia ja mitä seikkoja tulee ottaa huomioon erityisesti sanomapalveluihin liittyvässä liiketoiminnassa.

Design of User Authentication System for Multi-operator wireless LANs

Langattomat lähiverkot ovat viime vuosikymmeninä saavuttaneet suuren suosion. Tässä työssä käsitellään käyttäjien todentamisjärjestelmän suunnittelua ja kehitystä langattomaan monioperaattoriverkkoon. Langattomassa monioperaattoriverkossa käyttäjillä on mahdollisuus käyttää eri operaattoreiden palveluita. Aluksi käsitellään olemassa olevia todentamismenetelmiä ja -järjestelmiä. minkä jälkeen kuvaillaan todentamisjärjestelmä langattomille monioperaattoriverkoille. Todentamisjärjestelmän ratkaisuvaihtoehtoja esitellään kaksi, niin sanotut moni- istunto - ja yksittäisistuntomalli. Moni-istuntomalli on normaali lähestymistapa käyttäjien todentamiseen tietokonejärjestelmissä. Siinä käyttäjän pitää tunnistautua ja todentaa itsensä jokaiselle verkon palvelulle erikseen. Yksittäisistuntomallissa pyritään parempaan luotettavuuteen ja käytettävyyteen. Siinä käyttäjä todentaa itsensä vain kerran ja voi sen jälkeen päästä useisiin palveluihin. Työn loppuosassa kuvaillaan suunnitellun järjestelmän toteutusta. Lisäksi ehdotetaan vaihtoehtoisia toteutustapoja, analysoidaan järjestelmän heikkouksia ja kerrotaan jatkokehitysmahdoillisuuksista.

Idea Screening in Telecom Business

Diplomityö on tehty Telecom Business Research Centerissä Lappeenrannassa. Toimialalle tyypillistä on tekniikan ja globaalien markkinoiden nopea kehitys, mikä edellyttää alan tuotekehitykseltä panostamista oikeisiin ideoihin, sekä niiden nopeaa ja joustavaa kehittämistä tuotteiksi. Tuotekehityksen alkuvaihe on johtamisen kannalta erityisen suuri haaste, koska ideoita on runsaasti, mutta resurssit tehdä niihin liittyviä selvityksiä ovat rajalliset. Diplomityön tavoitteena oli tuotekehityksen alkuvaiheen ymmärtäminen ja tutkia kuinka ideoita pystytään seulomaan. Tutkimus perustuu tuotekehityskirjallisuuteen ja haastatteluihin Telecom-teollisuudessa. Työn tuloksena ideoiden seulontaa kirjallisuudessa ja Telecom-teollisuudessa kuvataan ja niiden perusteella esitetään toimivia käytäntöjä tuotekehitysideoiden seulontaan toimialalla. Ehdotettujen käytäntöjen tavoitteena on saada parempia ideoita tehokkaammin tuotekehityksen alkuvaiheesta varsinaiseksi tuotekehitysprojektiksi.

The induced generalized OWA operator

We present the induced generalized ordered weighted averaging (IGOWA) operator. It is a new aggregation operator that generalizes the OWA operator by using the main characteristics of two well known aggregation operators: the generalized OWA and the induced OWA operator. Then, this operator uses generalized means and order inducing variables in the reordering process. With this formulation, we get a wide range of aggregation operators that include all the particular cases of the IOWA and the GOWA operator, and a lot of other cases such as the induced ordered weighted geometric (IOWG) operator and the induced ordered weighted quadratic averaging (IOWQA) operator. We further generalize the IGOWA operator by using quasi-arithmetic means. The result is the Quasi-IOWA operator. Finally, we also develop a numerical example of the new approach in a financial decision making problem.

FLASH-OFDM System Performance Studies for Wireless Broadband Network Operator Services

@450 wireless broadband service is Digita’s mobile wireless broadband network service. In @450 network Digita acts as the network operator offering network capacity to service operators. For Digita it is important to know what kind of services its network is capable of and what are the network’s service parameters. The knowledge of the network parameters and the behaviour can be used in advance in the development of new service products. Before a new service product can be offered to service operators a lot of work has to be done. The basic testing is necessary to get an understanding of the basic functionality. The requirement specification has to be done and a new product has to be created. The new product has to be tested. The test results have to be analysed in order to find out if the new product is suitable for real use and with which limitations. The content of this Thesis is the development of wireless technologies, @450 service and network, FLASH-OFDM technology, FLASH-OFDM performance testing and the development of a new service product.

Interfirm Information System for Supply Chain Management from the Cloud: An Exploratory Case Study from the Telecom Industry

This study examines the practice of supply chain management problems and the perceived demand information distortion’s (the bullwhip effect) reduction with the interfirm information system, which is delivered as a cloud service to a company operating in the telecommunications industry. The purpose is to shed light in practice that do the interfirm information system have impact on the performance of the supply chain and in particularly the reduction of bullwhip effect. In addition, a holistic case study of the global telecommunications company's supply chain is presented and also the challenges it’s facing, and this study also proposes some measures to improve the situation. The theoretical part consists of the supply chain and its management, as well as increasing the efficiency and introducing the theories and related previous research. In addition, study presents performance metrics for the bullwhip effect detection and tracking. The theoretical part ends in presenting cloud -based business intelligence theoretical framework used in the background of this study. The research strategy is a qualitative case study, supported by quantitative data, which is collected from a telecommunication sector company's databases. Qualitative data were gathered mainly with two open interviews and the e-mail exchange during the development project. In addition, other materials from the company were collected during the project and the company's web site information was also used as the source. The data was collected to a specific case study database in order to increase reliability. The results show that the bullwhip effect can be reduced with the interfirm information system and with the use of CPFR and S&OP models and in particularly combining them to an integrated business planning. According to this study the interfirm information system does not, however, solve all of the supply chain and their effectiveness -related problems, because also the company’s processes and human activities have a major impact.
