Ce-doped and undoped LiCaAlF6 (LiCAF) single crystals 50 mm in diameter were grown by the Czochralski technique. The formation of inclusions and cracks accompanying the crystal growth was investigated. The dependence of lattice parameters on the temperature was measured for LiCAF and LiSrAlF6 single crystals. Linear thermal expansion coefficients for both these crystals were evaluated. Higher transmission properties for LiCAF single crystals were achieved in the UV and VUV wavelength regions. A Co-doped silica film was deposited on the surface of a Si(100) wafer and isothermally annealed at 750 degrees C to form spherical Co nanoparticles embedded in the silica film and a few atomic layer thick CoSi2 nanoplatelets within the wafer. The structure, morphology, and spatial orientation of the nanoplatelets were characterized. The experimental results indicate that the nanoplatelets exhibit hexagonal shape and a uniform thickness. The CoSi2 nanostructures lattice is coherent with the Si lattice, and each of them is parallel to one of the four planes belonging to the {111} crystallographic form of the host lattice. The introduction of single crystal casting techniques has led to the development of existing nickel-base superalloys to produce materials with optimum mechanical properties in the single crystal condition. As single crystals are known to be anisotropic, a study is needed to determine the general mechanical properties of these materials, and determine the effects of crystal orientation upon them. A study has been carried out to identify the effect of orientation and temperature on the creep and fatigue properties of a development single crystal superalloy, SRR 99. Creep testing and crystal rotation experiments have been made on SRR 99 and an earlier development alloy, SRR 9. Fatigue experiments at elevated temperatures have been carried out on both notched and un-notched specimens of alloy SRR 99. To aid in this analysis, several analytical techniques have been employed including Laue x-ray orientation analysis, measurement of strain by photographic methods and microstructural examination. Crystal rotation experiments have indicated that shear of 1 precipitates by lbrace111rbrace< 112> slip systems is operative during primary creep deformation at temperatures of 750oC and 850oC. The effect of orientation variation obtained by standard casting practices was not found to be significant. Creep rupture was found to be associated with multiple crack initiation from micropores. Fatigue crack initiation in un-notched specimens was found to be related to microporosity and microstructural defects. Failure was predominantly by crystallographic crack growth on lbrace111rbrace planes. The use of linear elastic fracture mechanics to describe fatigue crack propagation in alloy SRR 99 was found to be acceptable at temperatures up to 850oC. Variation of temperature, frequency and crystal orientation was found to have only moderate effect upon crack propagation rates.

The isothermal fatigue behavior of a high-activity aluminide-coated single-crystal superalloy was studied in air at test temperatures of 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1000 °C. Tests were performed using cylindrical specimens under strain control at ∼0.25 Hz; total strain ranges from 0.5 to 1.6 pet were investigated. At 600 °C, crack initiation occurred at brittle coating cracks, which led to a significant reduction in fatigue life compared to the uncoated alloy. Fatigue cracks grew from the brittle coating cracks initially in a stage II manner with a subsequent transition to crystallographic stage I fatigue. At 800 °C and 1000 °C, the coating failed quickly by a fatigue process due to the drastic reduction in strength above 750 °C, the ductile-brittle transition temperature. These cracks were arrested or slowed by oxidation at the coating-substrate interface and only led to a detriment in life relative to the uncoated material for total strain ranges of 1.2 pet and above 800 °C. The presence of the coating was beneficial at 800 °C for total strain rangesless than 1.2 pet. No effect of the coating was observed at 1000 °C. Crack growth in the substrate at 800 °C was similar to 600 °C; at 1000 °C, greater plasticity and oxidationrwere observed and cracks grew exclusively in a stage II manner.

The effect of brittle coating precracking on the fatigue behavior of a high-activity aluminide-coated single-crystal nickel-base superalloy has been studied using hollow cylindrical specimens at test temperatures of 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1000 °C. Three types of precrack were studied: narrow precracks formed at room temperature, wide precracks formed at room temperature, and narrow precracks formed at elevated temperature. The effect of precracking on fatigue life at 600 °C was found to depend strongly on the type of precrack. No failure was observed for specimens with narrow room-temperature precracks because of crack arrest via an oxidation-induced crack closure mechanism, while the behavior of wide precracks and precracks formed at elevated temperature mirrored the non-precracked behavior. Crack retardation also occurred for narrow room-temperature precracks tested at 800 °C - in this case, fatigue cracks leading to failure initiated in a layer of recrystallized grains on the inside surface of the specimen. A significant reduction in fatigue life at 800 °C relative to non-precracked specimens was observed for wide precracks and elevated temperature precracks. The presence of precracks bypassed the initiation and growth of coating fatigue cracks necessary for failure in non-precracked material. No effect of precracking was observed at 1000 °C.

Hierarchical nanowires (HNWs) exhibit unique properties and have wide applications, while often suffering from imperfect structure. Herein, we report a facile strategy toward ultrathin CdS HNWs with monocrystal structure, where a continuous-wave (CW) Nd:YAG laser is employed to irradiate an oleic acid (OA) solution containing precursors and a light absorber. The high heating rate and large temperature gradient generated by the CW laser lead to the rapid formation of tiny zinc-blende CdS nanocrystals which then line up into nanowires with the help of OA molecules. Next, the nanowires experience a phase transformation from zinc-blende to wurtzite structure, and the transformation-induced stress creates terraces on their surface, which promotes the growth of side branches and eventually results in monocrystal HNWs with an ultrathin diameter of 24 nm. The one-step synthesis of HNWs is conducted in air and completes in just 40 s, thus being very simple and rapid. The prepared CdS HNWs display photocatalytic performance superior to their nanoparticle counterparts, thus showing promise for catalytic applications in the future.

The Raman spectra at 77 K of the hydroxyl stretching of kaolinite were obtained along the three axes perpendicular to the crystal faces. Raman bands were observed at 3616, 3658 and 3677 cm−1 together with a distinct band observed at 3691 cm−1 and a broad profile between 3695 and 3715 cm−1. The band at 3616 cm−1 is assigned to the inner hydroxyl. The bands at 3658 and 3677 cm−1 are attributed to the out-of-phase vibrations of the inner surface hydroxyls. The Raman spectra of the in-phase vibrations of the inner-surface hydroxyl-stretching region are described in terms of transverse and longitudinal optic splitting. The band at 3691 cm−1 is assigned to the transverse optic and the broad profile to the longitudinal optic mode. This splitting remained even at liquid nitrogen temperature. The transverse optic vibration may be curve resolved into two or three bands, which are attributed to different types of hydroxyl groups in the kaolinite.
Effect of poly(acrylic acid) end-group functionality on inhibition of calcium oxalate crystal growth
Resumo:
A number of series of poly(acrylic acids) (PAA) of differing end-groups and molecular weights prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization were used as inhibitors for the crystallization of calcium oxalate at 23 and 80°C. As measured by turbidimetry and conductivity and as expected from previous reports, all PAA series were most effective for inhibition of crystallization at molecular weights of 1500–4000. However, the extent of inhibition was in general strongly dependent on the hydrophobicity and molecular weight of the end-group. These results may be explicable in terms of adsorption/desorption of PAA to growth sites on crystallites. The overall effectiveness of the series didn't follow a simple trend with end-group hydrophobicity, suggesting self-assembly behavior or a balance between adsorption and desorption rates to crystallite surfaces may be critical in the mechanism of inhibition of calcium oxalate crystallization.

Based on the embedded atom method (EAM), a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is performed to study the single-crystal copper nanowire with surface defects through tension. The tension simulations for nanowire without defect are first carried out under different temperatures, strain rates and time steps and then surface defect effects for nanowire are investigated. The stress-strain curves obtained by the MD simulations of various strain rates show a rate below 1 x 10(9) s-1 will exert less effect on the yield strength and yield point, and the Young's modulus is independent of strain rate. a time step below 5 fs is recommend for the atomic model during the MD simulation. It is observed that high temperature leads to low Young's modulus, as well as the yield strength. The surface defects on nanowires are systematically studied in considering different defect orientations. It is found that the surface defect serves as a dislocation source, and the yield strength shows 34.20% decresse with 45 degree surface defect. Both yield strength and yield point are significantly influenced by the surface defects, except the Young's modulus.

The oriented single crystal Raman spectrum of leiteite has been obtained and the spectra related to the structure of the mineral. The intensities of the observed bands vary according to orientation allowing them to be assigned to either Ag or Bg modes. Ag bands are generally the most intense in the CAAC spectrum, followed by ACCA, CBBC, and ABBA whereas Bg bands are generally the most intense in the CBAC followed by ABCA. The CAAC and ACCA spectra are identical, as are those obtained in the CBBC and ABBA orientations. Both cross-polarised spectra are identical. Band assignments were made with respect to bridging and non-bridging As-O bonds.

The single crystal Raman spectra of minerals brandholzite and bottinoite, formula M[Sb(OH)6]2•6H2O, where M is Mg+2 and Ni+2 respectively, and the non-aligned Raman spectrum of mopungite, formula Na[Sb(OH)6], are presented for the first time. The mixed metal minerals comprise of alternating layers of [Sb(OH)6]-1 octahedra and mixed [M(H2O)6]+2 / [Sb(OH)6]-1 octahedra. Mopungite comprises hydrogen bonded layers of [Sb(OH)6]-1 octahedra linked within the layer by Na+ ions. The spectra of the three minerals were dominated by the Sb-O symmetric stretch of the [Sb(OH)6]-1 octahedron, which occurs at approximately 620 cm-1. The Raman spectrum of mopungite showed many similarities to spectra of the di-octahedral minerals informing the view that the Sb octahedra gave rise to most of the Raman bands observed, particularly below 1200 cm-1. Assignments have been proposed based on the spectral comparison between the minerals, prior literature and density field theory calculations of the vibrational spectra of the free [Sb(OH)6]-1 and [M(H2O)6]+2 octahedra by a model chemistry of B3LYP/6-31G(d) and lanl2dz for the Sb atom. The single crystal data spectra showed good mode separation, allowing the majority of the bands to be assigned a symmetry species of A or E.

The single crystal Raman spectra of natural mineral schafarzikite FeSb2O4 from the Pernek locality of the Slovak Republic are presented for the first time. Raman spectra of natural mineral apuanite Fe2+Fe43+Sb4O12S, originating from the Apuan Alps in Italy, as well as spectra of synthetic ZnSb2O4 and arsenite mineral trippkeite CuAs2O4 are also presented for the first time. The spectra of the antimonite minerals are characterized by a strong band in the region 660 – 680 cm-1 with shoulders on either side, and a band of medium intensity near 300 cm-1. The spectrum of the arsenite mineral is characterized by a medium band near 780 cm-1 with a shoulder on the high wavenumber side and a strong band at 370 cm-1. Assignments are proposed based on the spectral comparison between the compounds, symmetry modes of the bands and prior literature. The single crystal spectra of schafarzikite showed good mode separation, allowing bands to be assigned a symmetry species of A1g, B1g, B2g or Eg.
