A number of Intelligent Mobile Robots have been developed at the University of Reading. They are completely autonomous in that no umbilical cord attaches to them to extra power supplies or computer station: further, they are not radio controlled. In this paper, the robots are discussed, in their various forms, and the individual behaviours and characteristics which appear are considered.

A programmable data acquisition system to allow novel use of meteorological radiosondes for atmospheric science measurements is described. In its basic form it supports four analogue inputs at 16 bit resolution, and up to two further inputs at lower resolution configurable instead for digital instruments. It also provides multiple instrument power supplies (+8V, +16V, +5V and -8V) from the 9V radiosonde battery. During a balloon flight encountering air temperatures from +17°C to -66°C, the worst case voltage drift in the 5V unipolar digitisation circuitry was 20mV. The system liberates a new range of low cost atmospheric research measurements, by utilising radiosondes routinely launched internationally for weather forecasting purposes. No additional receiving equipment is required. Comparisons between the specially instrumented and standard meteorological radiosondes show negligible effect of the additional instrumentation on the standard meteorological data.

This paper describes a nonlinear phenomenon in the dynamical behavior of a nonlinear system under two non-ideal excitations: the self-synchronization of unbalanced direct current motors. The considered model is taken as a Duffing system that is excited by two unbalanced direct current motors with limited power supplies. The results obtained by using numerical simulations are discussed in details.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) can be used to monitor hazardous and inaccessible areas. In these situations, the power supply (e.g. battery) of each node cannot be easily replaced. One solution to deal with the limited capacity of current power supplies is to deploy a large number of sensor nodes, since the lifetime and dependability of the network will increase through cooperation among nodes. Applications on WSN may also have other concerns, such as meeting temporal deadlines on message transmissions and maximizing the quality of information. Data fusion is a well-known technique that can be useful for the enhancement of data quality and for the maximization of WSN lifetime. In this paper, we propose an approach that allows the implementation of parallel data fusion techniques in IEEE 802.15.4 networks. One of the main advantages of the proposed approach is that it enables a trade-off between different user-defined metrics through the use of a genetic machine learning algorithm. Simulations and field experiments performed in different communication scenarios highlight significant improvements when compared with, for instance, the Gur Game approach or the implementation of conventional periodic communication techniques over IEEE 802.15.4 networks. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The objective of this work is to analyze the viability of incorporation in a microcomputer box of a nobreak with an ultracapacitor as energy storage device, substituting the conventional chemical battery. An advantage of this inclusion is cost reduction because a specific metallic or plastic frame won’t be necessary to protect the components of the nobreak; the microcomputer metallic frame offers the necessary protection for both equipments. Moreover, a large quantity of internal space of microcomputers box isn’t used, and is possible to use it to wrap up the nobreak. This work uses data about average power consumption of microcomputers; operation of switching mode power supplies for microcomputers; electrical and mechanical characteristics of ultracapacitors and operation of power circuits of nobreaks, with the purpose of present a study of energy storage capacity that an ultracapacitor should have to allow a safe switching off of a microcomputer in case of electrical network fail. It was noticed that the use of ultracapacitors is feasible to feed an 180 W load for 75 s, using a capacitive bank with sixteen ultracapacitors, with a total capacitance of 350 F and voltage of 10,8 V. The use of the proposed nobreak increases the reliability of the microcomputer by reducing the probability of user data losses in case of an electrical network fail, offering a high cost/benefit product. The substitution of the battery by an ultracapacitor allows a quick nobreak recharge, with low maintenance costs, since ultracapacitors have a lifetime bigger than batteries; beyond reducing the environmental impact, because they don’t use potentially toxic chemical compounds

In the collective imaginaries a robot is a human like machine as any androids in science fiction. However the type of robots that you will encounter most frequently are machinery that do work that is too dangerous, boring or onerous. Most of the robots in the world are of this type. They can be found in auto, medical, manufacturing and space industries. Therefore a robot is a system that contains sensors, control systems, manipulators, power supplies and software all working together to perform a task. The development and use of such a system is an active area of research and one of the main problems is the development of interaction skills with the surrounding environment, which include the ability to grasp objects. To perform this task the robot needs to sense the environment and acquire the object informations, physical attributes that may influence a grasp. Humans can solve this grasping problem easily due to their past experiences, that is why many researchers are approaching it from a machine learning perspective finding grasp of an object using information of already known objects. But humans can select the best grasp amongst a vast repertoire not only considering the physical attributes of the object to grasp but even to obtain a certain effect. This is why in our case the study in the area of robot manipulation is focused on grasping and integrating symbolic tasks with data gained through sensors. The learning model is based on Bayesian Network to encode the statistical dependencies between the data collected by the sensors and the symbolic task. This data representation has several advantages. It allows to take into account the uncertainty of the real world, allowing to deal with sensor noise, encodes notion of causality and provides an unified network for learning. Since the network is actually implemented and based on the human expert knowledge, it is very interesting to implement an automated method to learn the structure as in the future more tasks and object features can be introduced and a complex network design based only on human expert knowledge can become unreliable. Since structure learning algorithms presents some weaknesses, the goal of this thesis is to analyze real data used in the network modeled by the human expert, implement a feasible structure learning approach and compare the results with the network designed by the expert in order to possibly enhance it.

This dissertation presents the theory and the conducted activity that lead to the construction of a high voltage high frequency arbitrary waveform voltage generator. The generator has been specifically designed to supply power to a wide range of plasma actuators. The system has been completely designed, manufactured and tested at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering of the University of Bologna. The generator structure is based on the single phase cascaded H-bridge multilevel topology and is comprised of 24 elementary units that are series connected in order to form the typical staircase output voltage waveform of a multilevel converter. The total number of voltage levels that can be produced by the generator is 49. Each level is 600 V making the output peak-to-peak voltage equal to 28.8 kV. The large number of levels provides high resolution with respect to the output voltage having thus the possibility to generate arbitrary waveforms. Maximum frequency of operation is 20 kHz. A study of the relevant literature shows that this is the first time that a cascaded multilevel converter of such dimensions has been constructed. Isolation and control challenges had to be solved for the realization of the system. The biggest problem of the current technology in power supplies for plasma actuators is load matching. Resonant converters are the most used power supplies and are seriously affected by this problem. The manufactured generator completely solves this issue providing consistent voltage output independently of the connected load. This fact is very important when executing tests and during the comparison of the results because all measures should be comparable and not dependent from matching issues. The use of the multilevel converter for power supplying a plasma actuator is a real technological breakthrough that has provided and will continue to provide very significant experimental results.

Energy-harvesting devices attract wide interest as power supplies of today's medical implants. Their long lifetime will spare patients from repeated surgical interventions. They also offer the opportunity to further miniaturize existing implants such as pacemakers, defibrillators or recorders of bio signals. A mass imbalance oscillation generator, which consists of a clockwork from a commercially available automatic wrist watch, was used as energy harvesting device to convert the kinetic energy from the cardiac wall motion to electrical energy. An MRI-based motion analysis of the left ventricle revealed basal regions to be energetically most favorable for the rotating unbalance of our harvester. A mathematical model was developed as a tool for optimizing the device's configuration. The model was validated by an in vitro experiment where an arm robot accelerated the harvesting device by reproducing the cardiac motion. Furthermore, in an in vivo experiment, the device was affixed onto a sheep heart for 1 h. The generated power in both experiments-in vitro (30 μW) and in vivo (16.7 μW)-is sufficient to power modern pacemakers.

More than 15 years have passed since Myanmar embarked on its transition from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented one. The purpose of this paper is to provide a bird-eye's view of industrial changes from the 1990s up to 2005. The industrial sector showed a preliminary development in the first half of the 1990s due to an "open door" policy and liberalization measures. However, a brief period of growth failed to effect any changes in the economic fundamentals. The industrial sector still suffers from poor power supplies, limited access to imported raw materials and machinery, exchange rate instability, limited credit, and frequent changes of government regulation. Public ownership is still high in key infrastructure sectors, and has failed to provide sufficient services to private industries. What the government must do first is to get the fundamentals right.

Abstract Recently, switch mode power supplies (SMPS) have been used in a great variety of applications. The most challenging issue for designers of SMPS is to achieve simultaneously high efficiency operation at high power density. The size and weight of a power converter is dominated by the passive components since these elements are normally larger and heavier than other elements in the circuit. If the output power is constant, the stored amount of energy in the converter which is to be delivered to the load in each switching cycle is inversely proportional to the converter’s switching frequency. Therefore, increasing the switching frequency is considered a mean to achieve more compact solutions at higher power density levels. The importance of investigation in high switching frequency range comes from all the benefits that can be achieved. Besides the reduction in size of passive components, increasing switching frequency can significantly improve dynamic performances of power converters. Small energy storage and short switching period lead to faster transient response of the converter against the input voltage and load variations. The most important limitations for pushing up the switching frequency are related to increased conventional magnetic core loss as well as the winding loss due to the skin and proximity effect. A potential problem is also increased magnetic parasitics – leakage inductance and capacitance between the windings – that cause additional loss due to unwanted currents. Higher switching loss and the increased influence of printed circuit boards, interconnections and packaging on circuit behavior is another limiting factor. Resonant power conversion can address these problems by using soft switching techniques to reduce switching loss incorporating the parasitics into the circuit elements. However the performance gains are significantly reduced due to the circulating currents when the converter operates out of the nominal operating conditions. As the input voltage or the load change the circulating currents become higher comparing to those ones at nominal operating conditions. Multiple Input-Output Many potential gains from operating resonant converters at higher switching frequency can be obtained if they are employed in applications with favorable input voltage conditions such as those found in distributed power architectures. Load and particularly input voltage regulation reduce a converter’s power density and efficiency. Due to a relatively constant bus voltage in distributed power architectures the resonant converters are suitable for bus voltage conversion (dc/dc or solid state transformation). Unregulated two port dc/dc transformer products achieving very high power density and efficiency figures are based on series resonant converter operating just at the resonant frequency and operating in the megahertz range are already available in the market. However, further efficiency improvements of power architectures are expected to come from using two or more separate low voltage distribution buses instead of a single one. The principal objective of this dissertation is to implement the concept of the series resonant converter operating at its optimum point into a novel bidirectional multiple port dc/dc transformer to address the future needs of power architectures. The new multiple port dc/dc transformer is based on a series resonant converter topology and reduces to only one the number of magnetic components. Soft switching commutations make possible high switching frequencies to be adopted and high power densities to be achieved. Possible problems regarding stray inductances are eliminated since they are absorbed into the circuit elements. The converter features very good inherent load and cross regulation due to the small output impedances. The proposed multiple port dc/dc transformer operates at fixed switching frequency without line regulation. Extensive theoretical analysis of the topology and modeling in details are provided in order to compare with the experimental results. The relationships that show how the output voltage regulation and conduction losses are affected by the circuit parasitics are derived. The methods to select the resonant capacitor values to achieve different design goals such as minimum conduction losses, elimination of cross regulation or ZCS operation at full load of all the secondary side bridges are discussed. ZVS turn-on of all the switches is achieved by relying on the finite magnetizing inductance of the Abstract transformer. A change of the driving pattern is proposed to achieve ZCS operation of all the secondary side bridges independent on load variations or resonant capacitor tolerances. The feasibility of the proposed topology is verified through extensive simulation and experimental work. The optimization of the high frequency transformer design is also addressed in this work since it is the most bulky component in the converter. The impact of dead time interval and the gap size on the overall converter efficiency is analyzed on the design example of the three port dc/dc transformer of several hundreds of watts of the output power for high voltage applications. The final part of this research considers the implementation and performance analysis of the four port dc/dc transformer in a low voltage application of tens of watts of the output power and without isolation requirements.

In recent years, interest in light-emitting diode (LED) lighting has been growing because of its high efficacy, lifetime and ruggedness. This paper proposes a better adaptation of LED lamps to the technical requirements of photovoltaic lighting domestic systems, whose main quality criteria are reliability and that behave as voltage power supplies. As the key element of reliability in LED lamps is temperature, a solution is proposed for driving LED lamps using voltage sources, such as photovoltaic system batteries, with a control architecture based on pulse width modulation signal that regulates the current applied according to the LED lamp temperature. A prototype of the LED lamp has been implemented and tested to show its good performance at different temperatures and at different battery voltages.

We report the magnetic anisotropy and domain configuration of cosputtered TbFeGa alloys. The layers were deposited from two targets with compositions TbFe2 and Fe3Ga, respectively. The structural and magnetic properties do not only depend on the composition but also on the growth conditions. Alloys with the same composition but deposited using a DC or a pulsed power source in the TbFe2 target exhibit a different magnetic anisotropy. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, the size and topology of domain patterns can be tailored by changing the evaporation parameters of TbFe2. The width of the stripe domain increases from 235 to 835 nm when using the DC source in the TbFe2. We correlate this effect with Tb enrichment of the TbxFe1−x phases present in the samples.

ABSTRACT Modern digital electronics present a challenge to designers of power systems. The increasingly high-performance of microprocessors, FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) and ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) require power supplies to comply with very demanding static and dynamic requirements. Specifically, these power supplies are low-voltage/high-current DC-DC converters that need to be designed to exhibit low voltage ripple and low voltage deviation under high slew-rate load transients. Additionally, depending on the application, other requirements need to be met such as to provide to the load ”Dynamic Voltage Scaling” (DVS), where the converter needs to change the output voltage as fast as possible without underdamping, or ”Adaptive Voltage Positioning” (AVP) where the output voltage is slightly reduced the greater the output power. Of course, from the point of view of the industry, the figures of merit of these converters are the cost, efficiency and size/weight. Ideally, the industry needs a converter that is cheaper, more efficient, smaller and that can still meet the dynamic requirements of the application. In this context, several approaches to improve the figures of merit of these power supplies are followed in the industry and academia such as improving the topology of the converter, improving the semiconductor technology and improving the control. Indeed, the control is a fundamental part in these applications as a very fast control makes it easier for the topology to comply with the strict dynamic requirements and, consequently, gives the designer a larger margin of freedom to improve the cost, efficiency and/or size of the power supply. In this thesis, how to design and implement very fast controls for the Buck converter is investigated. This thesis proves that sensing the output voltage is all that is needed to achieve an almost time-optimal response and a unified design guideline for controls that only sense the output voltage is proposed. Then, in order to assure robustness in very fast controls, a very accurate modeling and stability analysis of DC-DC converters is proposed that takes into account sensing networks and critical parasitic elements. Also, using this modeling approach, an optimization algorithm that takes into account tolerances of components and distorted measurements is proposed. With the use of the algorithm, very fast analog controls of the state-of-the-art are compared and their capabilities to achieve a fast dynamic response are positioned de pending on the output capacitor. Additionally, a technique to improve the dynamic response of controllers is also proposed. All the proposals are corroborated by extensive simulations and experimental prototypes. Overall, this thesis serves as a methodology for engineers to design and implement fast and robust controls for Buck-type converters.

Everyone know train in cities, or connecting cities inside a surrounding area or even more often, taking into account the high-speed, there are railways infrastructure between cities separated with a long distance. This Ph.D work aims to help in the process to design one of the most essential steps in Installation Projects belonging to a railway system: Power Supply System. Design step of the railway power supply, usually confronts to several doubts and uncertainties, which must be solved with high accuracy. Capacity to supply power to the railway traffic depends on the success of this step. On the other hand is very important to manage the direct and indirect costs derived from Installation and Operation. With the Methodology is presented in this Thesis, it will be offered to the designer the possibility to handle an expert system that finally will fill a set of possible solutions. These solutions must be ready to work properly in the railway system, and they were tested using complex equation models. This Thesis has been developed through a research way, integrated inside Citef (Railway Research Centre of Technical University of Madrid). Among other projects and research ways, in Citef has been working in several validation studies and dimensioning of railway power supplies. It is been working by a large range of clients and railways systems. Along the accomplished Projects, the main goal has been rounded mostly about the next list of parameters of the electrical system: - Calculating number and location of traction substations. Power of each substation. - Type of Overhead contact line or catenary through the railway line. The wires which set up the catenary. Main Characteristics. - Calculating number and position of autotransformers for systems working in alternating current bi-voltage of called 2x25 kV. - Location of Neutral Zones. - Validating upon regulation of: o Drop voltages along the line o Maximum return voltages in the line o Overheating/overcurrent of the wires of the catenary o Avoiding overheating in the transformers of the traction substations. Main objective is that the solutions given by the Methodology, could be suggest scenarios where all of these parameters from above, would be between the limits established in the regulation. Having the choice to achieve a repository of possible good scenarios, where the parameters and electrical elements will be assigned like ready to work, that gives a great advance in terms of times and avoiding several tests. All of this would improve evidently the regular railway electrical systems process design. Direct costs referred to elements like traction substations, autotransformers, neutral zones, usually take up a great volume inside the general budget in railway systems. In this Thesis has been thought to bear in mind another kind of costs related to railway systems, also called indirect costs. These could be enveloped by those enmarked during installation and operation of electrical systems. Those derived from environmental impact; costs generated during the maintenance of the electrical elements and catenary; costs involved in the connection between traction substations and general electric grid; finally costs linked with the own installation of the whole electrical elements needed for the correct performance of the railway system. These are integrated inside the set has been collected taking into account own experience and research works. They are relevant to be controlled for our Methodology, just in case for the designers of this type of systems. The Methodology will cover the possibility that the final proposed power supply systems will be hold non-acceptable variations of costs, comparing with initial expected budgets, or directly assuming a threshold of budget for electrical elements in actual scenario, and achieving the cheapest in terms of commented costs from above. Analyzing direct and indirect costs, has been thought to divide their impact between two main categories. First one will be inside the Installation and the other category will comply with the costs often happens during Railway Operation time. These costs normally are opposed, that means when one is better the other turn into worse, in costs meaning. For this reason is necessary treating both objectives separately, in order to evaluate correctly the impact of each one into the final system. The objectives detailed before build the Methodology under three basic pillars: - Railway simulator Hamlet: This software has modules to configure many railway type of lines; mechanical and traction module to simulate the movement of rolling stock; signaling module; power supply module. This software has been developed using C++ and Matlab R13a - Previously has been mandatory to study how would be possible to work properly with a great number of feasible electrical systems. The target comprised the quick examination of these set of scenarios in terms of time. This point is talking about Maximum power demand peaks by railway operation plans. - Optimization algorithms. A railway infrastructure is a very complex system. At the beginning it was necessary to search about techniques and optimization algorithms, which could be adaptable to this complex system. Finally three genetic multiobjective algorithms were the chosen. Final decision was taken attending to reasons such as time complexity, able to multiobjective, easy to integrate in our problem and with a large application in engineering tasks. They are: NSGA-II, AMGA-II and ɛ-MOEA. - Designing objectives functions and equation model ready to work with the direct and indirect costs. The basic restrictions are not able to avoid, like budgetary or electrical, connected hardly with the recommended performance of elements, catenary and safety in a electrical railway systems. The battery of tests launched to the Methodology has been designed to be as real as possible. In fact, due to our work in Citef and with real Projects, has been integrated and configured three real railway lines, in order to evaluate correctly the final results collected by the Methodology. Another topic of our tests has been the comparison between the performances of the three algorithms chosen. Final step has been the comparison again with different possible good solutions, it means power supply system designs, provided by the Methodology, testing the validity of them. Once this work has been finished, the conclusions have been very satisfactory. Therefore this Thesis suggest a very interesting way of research and work, in terms of the results obtained and for the future opportunities can be created with the evolution of this. This Thesis has been developed with this idea in mind, so is expected this work could adhere another factor to work in the difficult task of validation and design of railway power supply systems.
