An estimation method for the three-dimensional underwater shape of tuna longlines is developed, using measurements of depth obtained from micro-bathythermographs (BTs) attached to the main line at equally spaced intervals. The shape of the main line is approximated by a model which consists of a chain of unit length lines (folding-rule model), where the junction points are placed at the observed depths. Among the infinite number of possible shapes, the most likely shape is considered to be the smoothest one that can be obtained with a numerical optimization algorithm. To validate the method, a series of experimental longline operations were conducted in the equatorial region of the eastern Pacific Ocean, using 13 or 14 micro-BTs per basket of main line. Concurrent observations of oceanographic conditions (currents and temperature structure) were obtained. The shape of the main line can be calculated at arbitrary times during operations. Shapes were consistent with the current structure. On the equator, the line was elevated significantly by the Equatorial Undercurrent. It is shown that the shape of main line depends primarily upon the vertical shear and direction of the current relative to the gear. Time sequences of calculated shapes reveals that observed periodic (1-2 hours) oscillations in depth of the gear was caused by swinging movements of the main line. The shortening rate of the main line is an important parameter for formulating the shape of the longline, and its precise measurement is desirable.

In the 'free-ball' version of the micro-scale abrasion or ball-cratering test the rotating ball rests against a tilted sample and a grooved drive shaft. Tests under nominally identical conditions with different apparatus commonly show small but significant differences in measured wear rate. An indirect method has been developed and demonstrated for continuous on-line measurement of the coefficient of friction in the free-ball test. Experimental investigation of the effects of sample tilt angle and drive shaft groove width shows that both these factors influence the stability of the rotation of the ball, and the shape of the abrasive slurry pool, which in turn affect the coefficient of friction in the wear scar area and the measured wear rate. It is suggested that in order to improve the reproducibility of this method the geometry of the apparatus should be specified. For the apparatus used in this work with a steel ball of 25 mm diameter, a sample tilt angle of 60-75° and a shaft groove width of about 10mm provided the most stable ball motion and a wear rate which showed least variability. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. This paper reports on a switchable multi-band filter response achieved within a single micro-electro-mechanical device. A prototype device fabricated in a SOI process demonstrates a voltage programmable and tunable, dual-band, band-pass/band-stop response. Both analytical and finite element models are introduced in this paper to elucidate the operating principle of the filter and to guide filter design. Voltage programmability of the filter characteristic is demonstrated with the ability to independently tune the centre frequency and bandwidth for each band. A representative measurement shows that the minimum 3 dB-bandwidth (BW) is 155 Hz, 140Hz, and 20 dB-BW is 216 Hz, 203Hz for the upper-band and lower-band center frequencies located at 131.5 kHz and 130.7 kHz, respectively. © 2011 IEEE.

Vibration is commonly used in civil engineering applications to efficiently compact aggregates. This study examined the effect of vibration and drainage on bone graft compaction and cement penetration in an in vitro femoral impaction bone grafting model with the use of 3-dimensional micro-computed tomographic imaging. Three regions were analyzed. In the middle and proximal femoral regions, there was a significant increase in the proportion of bone grafts with a reciprocal reduction in water and air in the vibration-assisted group (P < .01) as compared with the control group, suggesting tighter graft compaction. Cement volume was also significantly reduced in the middle region in the vibration-assisted group. No difference was observed in the distal region. This study demonstrates the value of vibration and drainage in bone graft compaction, with implications therein for clinical application and outcome.

This paper investigates the use of inertial actuators to reduce the sound radiated by a submarine hull under excitation from the propeller. The axial forces from the propeller are tonal at the blade passing frequency. The hull is modeled as a fluid-loaded cylindrical shell with ring stiffeners and equally spaced bulkheads. The cylinder is closed at each end by circular plates and conical end caps. The forces from the propeller are transmitted to the hull by a rigid foundation connected to the propeller shaft. Inertial actuators are used as the structural control inputs. The actuators are arranged in circumferential arrays and attached to the internal end plates of the hull. Two active control techniques corresponding to active vibration control and discrete structural acoustic sensing are implemented to attenuate the structural and acoustic responses of the submarine. In the latter technique, error information on the radiated sound fields is provided by a discrete structural acoustic sensor. An acoustic transfer function is defined to estimate the far field sound pressure from a single point measurement on the hull. The inertial actuators are shown to provide control forces with a magnitude large enough to reduce the sound due to hull vibration. © 2012 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Active vibration control (AVC) is a relatively new technology for the mitigation of annoying human-induced vibrations in floors. However, recent technological developments have demonstrated its great potential application in this field. Despite this, when a floor is found to have problematic floor vibrations after construction the unfamiliar technology of AVC is usually avoided in favour of more common techniques, such as Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) which have a proven track record of successful application, particularly for footbridges and staircases. This study aims to investigate the advantages and disadvantages that AVC has, when compared with TMDs, for the application of mitigation of pedestrian-induced floor vibrations in offices. Simulations are performed using the results from a finite element model of a typical office layout that has a high vibration response level. The vibration problems on this floor are then alleviated through the use of both AVC and TMDs and the results of each mitigation configuration compared. The results of this study will enable a more informed decision to be made by building owners and structural engineers regarding suitable technologies for reducing floor vibrations.

This paper examines the sources of uncertainly in models used to predict vibration from underground railways. It will become clear from this presentation that by varying parameters by a small amount, consistent with uncertainties in measured data, the predicted vibration levels vary significantly, often by more than 10dB. This error cannot be forecast. Small changes made to soil parameters (Compressive and Shear Wave velocities and density), to slab bending stiffness and mass and to the measurement position give rise to changes in vibration levels of more than lOdB. So if 10dB prediction error results from small uncertainties in soil parameters and measurement position it cannot be sensible to rely on prediction models for accuracy better than 10dB. The presentation will demonstrate in real time the use of the new - and freely-available - PiP software for calculating vibration from railway tunnels in real time.

A custom designed microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) micro-hotplate, capable of operating at high temperatures (up to 700 C), was used to thermo-optically characterize fluorescent temperature-sensitive nanosensors. The nanosensors, 550 nm in diameter, are composed of temperature-sensitive rhodamine B (RhB) fluorophore which was conjugated to an inert silica sol-gel matrix. Temperature-sensitive nanosensors were dispersed and dried across the surface of the MEMS micro-hotplate, which was mounted in the slide holder of a fluorescence confocal microscope. Through electrical control of the MEMS micro-hotplate, temperature induced changes in fluorescence intensity of the nanosensors was measured over a wide temperature range. The fluorescence response of all nanosensors dispersed across the surface of the MEMS device was found to decrease in an exponential manner by 94%, when the temperature was increased from 25 C to 145 C. The fluorescence response of all dispersed nanosensors across the whole surface of the MEMS device and individual nanosensors, using line profile analysis, were not statistically different (p < 0.05). The MEMS device used for this study could prove to be a reliable, low cost, low power and high temperature micro-hotplate for the thermo-optical characterisation of sub-micron sized particles. The temperature-sensitive nanosensors could find potential application in the measurement of temperature in biological and micro-electrical systems. The Authors. © 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V. Following the miniaturization of photonic devices and the increase in data rates, the issues of self heating and heat removal in active nanophotonic devices should be considered and studied in more details. In this paper we use the approach of Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM) to obtain an image of the temperature field of a silicon micro ring resonator with sub-micron spatial resolution. The temperature rise in the device is a result of self heating which is caused by free carrier absorption in the doped silicon. The temperature is measured locally and directly using a temperature sensitive AFM probe. We show that this local temperature measurement is feasible in the photonic device despite the perturbation that is introduced by the probe. Using the above method we observed a significant self heating of about 10 degrees within the device.

A new Enzyme ImmunoAssay (EIA) for PCDD/F TEQ measurement in extracts of environmental samples was described. The bioassay TEQ which derived from EIA and EROD were compared with each other and with results from chemical analysis. For all environmental samples, the EROD-TEQ is higher than the value from chemical analysis. However, the EIA-TEQ is much more identical with the value from chemical analysis. Our results indicate that the EIA assay is a complementary method to the EROD assay and should be useful as a rapid and sensitive screening tool for environmental samples in many situations. Epitaxial growth of AlN has been performed by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with ammonia. The structural properties of materials were studied by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XRD and TEM diffraction pattern confirm the AlN is single crystalline 2H-polytype with the epitaxial relationship of (0001)AlNparallel to(111)Si, [11 (2) over bar0](AlN)parallel to[110](Si), [10 (1) over bar0](AlN)parallel to[11 (2) over bar](Si). Micro-Raman scattering measurement shows that the E-2 (high) and A(1) (LO) phonon mode shift 9 cm(-1) toward the low frequency, which shows the existence of large tensile strain in the AlN films. Furthermore, the appearance of forbidden A, (TO) mode and its anomalous shift toward high frequency was found and explained. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Based on the semiconductor laser whose spectral line with width is compressed to be less than 1.2Mhz, a system was designed to measure and improve the amplitude and frequency of the real-time microvibration with sinusoidal modulation. real-time microvibration measurement was executed without alignment problem in the interferometry; and low-frequency disturbance of environment could be eliminated. Suggestions were also given to consummate the system. The system also has resistance against the low frequency disturbance of the environment.
