Composite fibers composed of poly(L-lactide)-grafted hydroxyapatite (PLA-g-HAP) nanoparticles and polylactide (PLA) matrix were prepared by electro-spinning. Environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to investigate the morphology of the composite fibers and the distribution of PLA-g-HAP nanoparticles in the fibers, respectively. At a low content (similar to 4 wt%) of PLA-g-HAP, the nanoparticles dispersed uniformly in the fibers and the composite fibrous mats exhibited higher strength properties, compared with the pristine PLA fiber mats and the simple hydroxyapatite/PLA blend fiber mats. But when the content of PLA-g-HAP further increased, the nanoparticles began to aggregate, which resulted in the deterioration of the mechanical properties of the composite fiber mats. The degradation behaviors of the composite fiber mats were closely related to the content of PLA-g-HAP. At a low PLA-g-HAP content, degradation may be delayed due to the reduction of autocatalytic degradation of PLA. When PLA-g-HAP content was high, degradation rate increased because of the enhanced wettability of the composite fibers and the escape of the nanoparticles from fiber surfaces during incubation.

A novel biodegradable aliphatic poly(L-lactide-co-carbonate) bearing pendant acetylene groups was successfully prepared by ring-opening copolymerization of L-lactide (LA) with 5-methyl-5-propargyloxycarbonyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one (PC) in the presence of benzyl alcohol as initiator with ZnEt2 as catalyst in bulk at 100 degrees C and subsequently used for grafting 2-azidoethyl beta-D-glucopyranoside and 2-azidoethyl beta-lactoside by the typical "click reaction," that is Cu(I)-catalyzed cycloaddition of azide and alkyne. The density of acetylene groups in the copolymer can be tailored by the molar ratio of PC to LA during the copolymerization. The aliphatic copolymers grafted with sugars showed low cytotoxicity to L929 cells, improved hydrophilic properties and specific recognition and binding ability with lectins, that is Concanavalin A (Con A) and Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA). Therefore, this kind of sugar-grafted copolymer could be a good candidate in variety of biomedical applications.

A novel amphiphilic biodegradable triblock copolymer (PGL-PLA-PGL) with polylactide (PLA) as hydrophobic middle block and poly(glutamic acid) (PGL) as hydrophilic lateral blocks was successfully synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) Of L-lactide (LA) and N-carboxy anhydride (NCA) consecutively and by subsequent catalytic hydrogenation. The results of cell experiment of PGL-PLA-PGL suggested that PGL could improve biocompatibility of polyester obviously. The copolymer could form micelles of spindly shape easily in aqueous solution. The pendant carboxyl groups of the triblock copolymer were further activated with N-hydroxysuccinimide and combined with a cell-adhesive peptide GRGI)SY Incorporation of the oligopeptide further enhanced the hydrophilicity and led to formation of spherical micelles. PGL-PLAPGL showed better cell adhesion and spreading ability than pure PLA and the GRGDSY-containing copolymer exhibited even further improvement in cell adhesion and spreading ability, indicating that the copolymer could find a promising application in drug delivery or tissue engineering.

Nano-hydroxyapatite (HA)/poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) composite microspheres with relatively uniform size distribution were prepared by a solid-in-oil-in-water (s/o/w) emusion solvent evaporation method. The encapsulation of the HA nanopaticles in microshperes was significantly improved by grafting PLLA on the surface of the HA nanoparticles (p-HA) during emulsion process. This procedure gave a possibility to obtain p-HA/PLLA composite microspheres with uniform morphology and the encapsulated p-HA nanoparticle loading reached up to 40 wt% (33 wt% of pure HA) in the p-HA/PLLA composite microspheres. The microstructure of composite microspheres from core-shell to single phase changed with the variation of p-HA to PLLA ratios. p-HA/PLLA composite microspheres with the diameter range of 2-3 mu m were obtained. The entrapment efficiency of p-HA in microspheres could high up to 90 wt% and that of HA was only 13 wt%. Surface and bulk characterizations of the composite microspheres were performed by measurements such as wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

A series of biodegradable polylactide-based polyurethanes (PLAUs) were synthesized using PLA diol (M-n = 3200) as soft segment, 4,4 '-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as hard segment, and 1,4-butanediol as chain extender. The structures and properties of these PLAUs were studied using infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, tensile testing, and thermomechanical analysis. Among them, the MDI-based PLAU has the highest T-g, maximum tensile strength, and restoration force, the TDI-based PLAU has the lowest T-g, and the IPDI-based PLAU has the highest tensile modulus and elongation at break. They are all amorphous. The shape recovery of the three PLAUs is almost complete in a tensile elongation of 150% or a twofold compression. They can keep their temporary shape easily at room temperature (20 degrees C). More importantly, they can deform and recover at a temperature below their T-g values. Therefore, by selecting the appropriate hard segment and adjusting the ratio of hard to soft segments, they can meet different practical demands for shape memory medical devices.

A series of segmented poly (L-lactide)-polyurethanes (PLA-PU) were synthesized by a two-step method, with oligo-poly(L-lactide) (PLA) as the soft segments and the reaction product of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate(TDI) and ethylene glycol(EG) as the hard segments. The shape memory properties of PLA-PUs were examined. The processed PLA-PUs could recover almost 100% to their original shape within 10 degrees C from the lowest recovery temperature. In the recovery process, the PLA-PUs showed a maximum contracting stress of shape change in the range of 1.5-4 MPa depending on the PLA segmental length and the hard-segmental content and higher than that of poly (e-caprolactone polyurethane) (PCL-PU). Besides, the influence of deforming and fixing temperatures on shape memory properties of PLA-PU was studied in detail. They could affect not only the recovery temperature but also the maximum contracting stress. The experiments of cell incubation were used to evaluate the biocompatibility of PLA-PU. The results show that the biocompatibility of PLA-PU is comparable to that of the pure PLA. This kind of polyurethane can be used as implanted medical devices with a shape memory property.

We have studied the lamellar orientation in thin films of a model diblock copolymer, symmetric poly(styrene)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PLLA), in the melt state on supported silicon wafer surface. In this system, while the PLLA block prefers to wet the polymer/substrate interface, the polymer/air as well as polymer/polymer interface is neutral for both blocks due to the similar surface energies of PS and PLLA in melt state. Our results demonstrate that the interplay of the interfaces during phase separation results in a series of structures before approaching the equilibrium state. Lamellar orientation of thin films with different initial film thicknesses at different annealing stages has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is found that in the early stage (annealing time t < 10 min), the polymer/substrate interface dominates the structure evolution, leading to a parallel lamellar structure with holes or islands formed depending on the initial film thickness. Later on, the neutral air interface becomes important and leads to a transition of lamellar orientation from parallel to perpendicular. It is interesting to see that for films with thickness h > 2L, where L is the bulk lamellar period, the lamellar orientation transition can occur independently in different parallel lamellar domains due to the neutrality of polymer/polymer interface.

New nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending poly(L-lactide) (PLLA), poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), and organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT). The obtained nanocomposites showed enhanced tensile strength, modulus and elongation at break than that of PLLA/PCL blends. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed the increasing mechanical properties with temperature dependence of nanocomposites. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy indicated that the material formed the nanostructure. Adding OMMT improved the thermal stability and crystalline abilities of nanocomposites. The morphology was investigated by environmental scanning electron microscopy, which showed that increasing content of OMMT reduces the domain size of phase-separated particles. The specific interaction between each polymer and OMMT was characterized by the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, B, which was determined by the equilibrium melting point depression of nanocomposites. The final values of B showed that PLLA was more compatible with OMMT than PCL.

Plasticized poly(L-lactide)-silica nanocomposite materials have been successfully synthesized by sol-gel process. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized by infrared spectra (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), Tensile testing and scanning electron microscope (SEM). IR measurements show that vibration of C-O-C group is confined by silica network. Also the crystallization of poly (L-lactide) is partly confined by silica network. The presence of even small amount of silica largely improves the tensile strength of the samples, TGA results reveal that the thermal stability of samples is improved with silica loading.

A new surface modification method by grafting L-lactic acid oligomer onto the surface silanol groups of silica nanoparticles has been developed. The surface-grafting reaction is confirmed by IR and Si-29 MAS NMR analyses. TEM and SEM results show that grafted SiO2 (g-SiO2) nanoparticles can be comparatively uniformly dispersed in chloroform or PLLA matrix, while the unmodified SiO2 nanoparticles tend to aggregate. The loading of g-SiO2 nanoparticles in poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) matrix greatly improves the toughness and tensile strength of this material. In contrast, the incorporation of un-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles into PLLA leads to the deterioration of its mechanical properties. DSC analysis shows that g-SiO2 nanoparticles can serve as a nucleating agent for the crystallization of PLLA in the composites. SEM characterization shows the tough characteristics and great interfacial combination strength for g-SiO2 (5wt%)/PLLA nanocomposites.

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) were prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of chitosan (CS) and poly(L-glutamic acid) (PLGA) at various pH. It was found that the stoichiometry of the PECs depends on pH.An investigation of the PECs using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy proved that the formation of the complexes is due to electrostatic interaction between –NH3 + groups of CS and –COO− groups of PLGA. The solid PECs were characterized using wide-angle X-ray diffraction, which suggested that a strong interaction occurs between the two polymers at pH = 4 or 5 and relatively weak interaction at pH = 3. These results were further confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis data. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the complexes have a spherical shape. The effect of ionic strength on the size of the PECs was also studied using dynamic light scattering. It was found that the size of the PECs is dependent on pH.

The self-assembly processes of the rod-coil diblock oligomer thin film of tetra-aniline (TANI)-block-poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) with different film thicknesses induced in the coil-selective solvent of acetone vapor at room temperature were studied. The morphologies of the oligomer films were determined by the film thickness. For the thicker film (232 nm), the nonextinct concentric ring-banded textures could form. While for the thinner and appropriate film (about 6 nm), multistacked diamond-shaped appearances with the periodic thickness being about 8.5 nm(6-nm-thick extended PLLA chain and 2.5-nm-thick p-pi conjugating TANI bimolecular layer) formed. The possible formation models of those two regular morphologies were presented in detail.

A new method for synthesis of novel hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s from commercially available AA' and CBx type monomers has been developed on the basis of a series of model reactions. The hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s with multihydroxyl end groups are prepared by thermal polycondensation of carboxyl anhydrides (AA') and multihydroxyl primary amine (CBx) without any catalyst and solvent. The reaction mechanism in the initial stage of polymerization was investigated with in situ H-1 NMR. In the initial stage of the reaction, primary amino groups of 2-amino-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol (AEPO) or tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (THAM) react rapidly with anhydride, forming an intermediate which can be considered as a new AB(x) type monomer. Further self-polycondensation reactions of the AB. molecules produce hyperbranched polymers. Analysis using H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy revealed the degree of branching of the resulting polymers ranging from 0.36 to 0.55. These hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s contain configurational isomers observed by C-13 and DEPT C-13 NMR spectroscopy, possess high molecular weights with broad distributions and display glass-transition temperatures (T(g)s) between 7 and 96 degreesC.

A novel AB(3)-type monomer was prepared from gallic acid and DL-2-aminobutyric acid, and used for the synthesis of the biocompatible hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s by self-polycondensation. The polymers were characterized via FTIR and NMR spectroscopy and thermal analysis, and the average degree of branching of the polymers was estimated to be 0.75. The polymers with abundant acetyl end groups were found to be amorphous with lower intrinsic viscosity, better thermal stability and excellent solubility.

Crystallization behavior, structural development and morphology evolution in a series of diblock copolymers Of poly(L-lactide)-blockpoly(ethylene glycol) (PLLA-b-PEG) were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In these copolymers, both blocks are crystallizable and biocompatible. It was interesting that these PLLA-b-PEG diblock copolymers could form spherulites with banded textures, which was undercooling dependent. Single crystals with an abundance of screw dislocations were also observed via AFM. Such results indicated that these ringed spherulites and single crystals were formed during the crystallization of the PLLA blocks.
